While a true health care system is still many years away, after all the hot debate, the business end of health care is only half of the responsibility. After all that time debating it and wanting it, it begs the question, ‘’Will you be ready to participate in that system? Will you be ready to live a healthy lifestyle or, will you be more comfortable living in reaction mode, addressing pain and bad news as it comes along?“ For me, the obvious conclusion is, no need to sit around waiting for system reform, there’s plenty of reform to do on my end now.

Fortunately, this issue is filled with great information and many wonderful local practitioners dedicated to our wellbeing, to help us get on the right path, to help keep us on the right path, and to help us continually explore the latest new treatments and modalities in holistic health.

he spring is here and talk of Lyme disease is in the air. Most of us in CT, a hot spot of Lyme, know of someone who suffers from the devastating consequences of this disease. Since it’s discovery in 1975, according to the Center for Disease Control, Lyme disease has reached epidemic proportions in the US with the yearly rate higher than newly reported HIV infections.

The disease penetrates multiple aspects of a persons’ physical, mental and emotional well-being. The lengthy list of symptoms includes head, muscle and joint pain, debilitating fatigue, cognitive problems, panic attacks, mood swings, irritability and depresDeni Weber sion. People struggle with an inability to work or attend school, financial and marital problems, feelings of isolation and loneliness along with fears and worries about the future.

Meditation by Kayak

S

tarting Sunday, June 6 Downunder Kayaking launches a Meditation by Kayak program, led by instructor, avid kayaker, and wildlife enthusiast Steven Freedman. Freedman will take a small group of paddlers on a gentle paddle of the Five Mile River where they will enjoy the water’s view of beautiful homes, magnificent boats, abundant wildlife and a natural tidal waterfall.

The paddling experience is one of connecting to nature and becoming one with the kayak and water. Once the paddlers feel comfortable with their paddling skills and the environment, they are encouraged to be quiet, paddle at their own pace, breathe deeply and settle into a gentle rhythm that is not only meditative but deeply relaxing and rejuvenating. Freedman will lead the group to the Tokeneke Creek where nestled among the reeds and surrounded by osprey, egrets, herons, and other native wildlife, he will offer a guided meditation to help them fully embrace the experience. The result is a deep awareness of body, mind, water, paddle, and kayak. No experience is necessary and paddling instruction is provided.

Downunder Kayaking is located in Rowayton, the seaside village between Darien and Norwalk, just 5 minutes from the New Haven train line and I-95, and 15 minutes from the Merritt Parkway.

In the summer of 2009, Dr. Risa Sloves, a Norwalk Chiropractic Physician, Board Certified in Maternity and Pediatric Care, who had been leading the Fairfield County Chapter of the Holistic Moms Network for several years, realized that many of her monthly HMN speakers and participants were highly educated healthcare practitioners, specializing in pre- through post-natal and early childhood education. Dr. Sloves wondered how the group could support the community in a holistic way from an educational standpoint. By the fall of 2009, Dr. Sloves and 12 other women had formed the networking group WOW. There are currently 18 women in WOW, whose specialties include: chiropractic care, fertility, lactation support, massage, exercise, pre and post-natal yoga, labor doula services, home and hospital midwifery, acupuncture, naturopathy, pediatrics, physical therapy, CPR training and Hypnobirthing childbirth education.

The women of WOW will be volunteering their time over the next four months at the Malta House in Norwalk, a residence program for mothers, their children and expectant mothers. WOW providers recently participated in the Mother’s Day 5k walk to benefit the American Heart Association, and there are plans to present educational events to the community in the coming months.

Estrogen and Progesterone: Prevailing Wisdom on Hormone Replacement Therapy

M

ore than 20 years ago, Belgian physician Jacques Hertoghe lectured to American doctors about the benefits of estrogen and progesterone supplementation for menopausal women. At the time, millions of American women were already being treated with these hormones in order to reduce hot flashes and prevent a variety of illnesses. But a large- scale study in 2002 called the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) said that doctors had it wrong.

The WHI reported that female hormone treatment actually appeared to cause a variety of illnesses, including cancer and heart disease.

How did Hertoghe and thousands of American doctors get it so wrong?

Actually, Hertoghe had it right because he recommended that only human hormones be given, at the right dose and in the right

form. Two decades ago, most American doctors were prescribing a combination of synthetic progesterone and horse estrogen (literally, estrogen derived from horse urine), and they were giving it out in pill form. In fact, Hertoghe had specifically cautioned against using female hormones that were not “bio-identical” (natural to the human body). He also pointed out that estrogen should be given only through the skin, not as a pill.

Subsequent studies have supported Dr. Hertoghe, repeatedly showing that real human hormones are much safer than their synthetic counterparts. For example, a 2005 study of 54,000 women in Europe (E3N-EPIC) showed that bioidentical estrogen applied to the skin, combined with bio-identical progesterone, actually reduced the rate of breast cancer. Women taking this combina-

But when the natural progesterone was replaced with synthetic progesterone, the rate of breast cancer went up by 50%.

In 2008, another review in the British Medical Journal noted that estrogen given through the skin was much less likely to cause blood clots than supplements given in pill form. Following many similar studies, researchers recently stated that, “bioidentical hormones are associated with lower risks, including the risk of breast cancer and cardiovascular disease, and are more efficacious than their synthetic and animal-derived counterparts” (Postgraduate Medicine 2009).

While no medical treatment is 100% safe, real female hormones have been shown to improve health and restore quality of life. Action Plan

U.S. Government Gets Behind Great Lakes Restoration

The Obama administration has released a five-year blueprint for applying $2.2 billion to repair a century’s worth of damage to the Great Lakes. That resource is the backbone of several U.S. regional economies dependent on tourism, outdoor recreation, shipping and manufacturing and a source of drinking water for 30 million people. Last year, Congress approved the first installment of $475 million; Obama has requested $300 million more as of October. The giant ecosystem has been plagued by toxic contamination, shrinking wildlife habitat and invasive species, the latest threat being Asian carp.

The massive national and regional effort intends to improve water quality, clean up toxic hot spots and phosphorus runoff, eliminate invasive species and protect wetlands.

Goals include saving key species like the lake sturgeon, now endangered due to overharvesting and habitat degradation.

Canadian activists have released a complementary plan calling for their government to get busy eliminating pollution and invasive species, and protecting water flows. Four of the five lakes border on both countries. “To see the Americans move on [this issue] will, we hope, force our federal and provincial governments to move in the same direction,” says Ontario Environment Minister John Gerretsen. “Substantial amounts of money are going to be required.”

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Great Lakes contain about 84 percent of the surface freshwater in North America and 21 percent of the world’s total supply.

But be aware that people who are regularly bombarded with multiple electronic media streams are paying a big mental price, according to recent research from Stanford University. “They’re suckers for irrelevancy,” concludes Professor Clifford Nass, who participated in the study. “Everything distracts them.”

The researchers found that heavy multitaskers consistently underperform those who prefer to complete one task at a time.

Weaknesses include their inability to pay attention to detail, organize memory and switch from one job to the next.

The kinds of produce identified as having anticancer properties include tomatoes, papaya, cantaloupe, cauliflower and broccoli. Drinking green tea also helps, as it contains an active compound that prevents and curbs the progression of prostate cancer.

In addition, various studies propose vitamin E, zinc and selenium as aids in reducing the risk of this type of cancer. Plant oils, nuts and seeds are naturally rich sources of vitamin E. Zinc is abundant in pumpkin seeds and oysters. Brown rice and whole grains supply selenium.

ypical dietary tactics to relieve symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) usually have short-lived effects because the avoidance of certain foods doesn’t seem to tackle the root of the problem, which is an overly sensitized digestive system reacting to stress.

Reporting on this widespread problem, the British Medical Journal notes that an increasing number of gastroenterologists are now looking to hypnotherapy to help their patients cope with the unpleasant and often painful symptoms. Dr. Roland Valori, editor of the journal Frontline Gastroenterology, said that of 100 patients treated, 90 found that hypnotherapy significantly improved their symptoms and gave them more control over the condition.

recent study published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention found that individuals who consume two or more soft drinks a week had nearly twice the risk of developing pancreatic cancer compared with those who don’t drink sodas. Pancreatic cancer is rare, but often lethal, because it is seldom detected in early stages, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Healing the Root Cause of Addiction with Ayurveda

Ayurveda means the “Science of Life,” a holistic view of keeping our bodies in balance by combining applied principles of yoga, meditation and diet.

I

t’s no secret that individuals who adopt unconscious ways to escape from stress and conflict can often become victims of their own self-destructive habits and behavioral patterns.

“Conflict creates stress and addictions, like [to] alcohol, food, work, sex and drugs,” says Yogi Amrit Desai, founder of Kripalu Yoga. “Addictions are antidotes that provide a temporary escape from the stress-producing, conflictcreating reactions you have about what you are doing, where you are going and who you are with. Addiction, which is only an effect, occurs when you continue to use inappropriate external resources to reduce stress and restore

a sense of balance, while failing to resolve the cause of the stress hidden in the unconscious.”

Desai further explains how the body’s own homeostasis works to naturally regulate the internal polarities of tension and relaxation. However, when the amount of tension exceeds what can be balanced by relaxation, people call the unresolved tension stress.

“It is important to recognize that most people don’t know the difference between tension and stress,” cautions Desai. He observes that stressors— thoughts and reactions to our lifestyle, relationships, work environment and family life—are introduced through

the ego mind. Emotionally charged thoughts and feelings of blame, shame or guilt then get metabolized into our biological body system. Stored in the form of toxins and neuro-glandular imbalances, these feelings create energy blocks that prevent the free flow of energy, or prana, the body’s selfhealing wisdom. Energy blocks may take the form of muscular tensions and weakness in liver, kidney and digestive functions. Gradual decline results in a progressive deterioration of biological processes and consequently can manifest in external symptoms of fatigue, fear, anxiety and insecurity.

“But, when our thoughts are free from stressful emotional feelings, they naturally pass like clouds without leaving footprints in our biology,” counsels Desai, whose approach to Ayurveda is designed to solve addictions by resolving internal causes of stress.

“Shift your focus inward to your inner source, instead of reaching for external distractions; go within to resolve any excess tension and all surface symptoms will begin to erode,” advises Desai, who points out that addictions prevent us from connecting to the innermost core of our being. With the release of unconscious, stress-producing conflicts, an individual naturally becomes more securely established in their core self; thus, their life force is freed to activate and accelerate the power of pranic healing.

Ayurveda, a holistic health system and sister science of yoga, works from the outside in; yoga works from the inside out. Yoga physically initiates an unfolding of the spirit and a consequent transformation. Ayurveda initiates the same process, beginning with in-depth purification of body and mind. Ayurvedic treatments such as diet, nutritional herbs and an herbal detoxification process known as panchakarma, as well as meditation, not only work hand-in-hand to create a shift on a physical level, they also remove unconscious blocks that create chronic stress.

Desai’s approaches to yoga and ayurvedic treatments are focused on working on subtle pranic levels of healing. Ayurvedic treatments are geared towards restoring energetic balance,

according to an individual’s physical and psychological constitution, which are considered to be interrelated and interactive. Mary Guerrera, a medical doctor and director of integrative medicine at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, stresses that integrative is not just another word for alternative.

“Alternative medicine indicates something to be used in place of. Integrative is a term that has emerged in the past decade to reflect a bringing together of the best that conventional and alternative medicine have to offer,” says Guerrera, who went on to study acupuncture and holistic medicine after completing her conventional medical training in the ‘80s.

She explains that because one person can’t be an expert in everything, integrative medicine hinges on the idea of team care. For instance, a cancer patient might see her specialists for chemotherapy and surgery, and then be referred to an acupuncturist for treatments to help with nausea or pain management, as well as a nutritionist to help her restore lost weight.

A patient going into surgery might practice mindfulness-based meditation beforehand, which has been shown to hasten healing times, decrease hospital stays and thus, save money.

“Integrative medicine is team-based, collaborative care,” Guerrera explains.

Cardiologist Mimi Guarneri is medical director and founder of the Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine, a multi-disciplinary center that offers care for people with heart disease, pain, weight management needs, cancer, diabetes, stress and women’s health issues. She notes that the center receives 3,500 patients a month, many of whom arrive seeking relief from costly drugs or surgeries.

He was 330 pounds, suffered from sleep apnea and was diabetic. He had all the risk factors for heart disease,” says Guarneri. Weil believes that money, or lack thereof, made it happen.

During congressional testimony before the Senate committee on health, education, labor and pensions last February, Weil joined heart physician and health guru Dr. Dean Ornish and others in rattling off a stunning list of statistics: The United States currently spends 16 percent of its gross domestic product on health care, more than any other country in the world, yet its health outcomes are ranked 37th in the world by the World Health Organization. In 2006, insur-

ance companies covered 1.3 million coronary angioplasty procedures, at roughly $48,000 each, and 448,000 coronary bypass operations at a cost of $99,000. Yet, things like nutrition counseling, exercise programs and stress-reduction classes, which studies show could prevent as much as 90 percent of all heart disease, are typically not covered by insurance.

That, remarks Weil, needs to change, and he’s optimistic that it will.

“We need to transform medicine so we are not so dependent on these high-tech expensive solutions for everything,” concludes Weil, who outlines his plan in his book, Why our Health Matters: A Vision of Medicine That Can Transform the Future. “We need doctors who know when and when not to use them and who are trained to use other kinds of interventions. That’s the great promise of integrative medicine: It can bring effective, lower-cost treatments into the mainstream.”

he term ‘integrative medicine’ (IM) refers to a new practice of healthcare, where the focus is on treating the entire person—mind, body and spirit— rather than specific parts and/or a single disease. IM, by definition, is a partnership between the patient and chosen healthcare practitioners. This approach employs the use of therapies that are supported by highquality evidence in conjunction with conventional medicine and medical procedures, when necessary. This evolving method of patient care is rapidly becoming the mainstream choice, as the nation’s hospitals, medical schools and universities increasingly adopt it.

The conventional heath-care practice of a “pill for an ill” is not only antiquated, it has failed in the arena of disease resolution. Because all health problems and diseases are multidimensional, with many underlying roots, attempting to tackle human ills with a magic bullet doesn’t work. An integrative approach is proving to be a more effective way to manage the person and his or her health issues.

While the relationship between reactive and functional medicine continues to evolve, patients are experiencing an increase in the availability of educational information and as a result a huge shift in consciousness. The public is becoming more educated about the necessity for health-care reform, not only governmentally, but also within themselves. This understanding encompasses lifestyle modifications, including a shift away from high-calorie, lownutrient processed foods, and toward adequate amounts of exercise and sleep, as well as supplements to fill in the potholes of an unhealthful diet.

As a result of unhealthy diets and other bad choices, heart disease is the biggest cause of mortality in this country, accounting for over 900,000 deaths per year. Heart disease is a multi-system problem involving the digestive system, diet, blood fat (triglycerides, choles-

terol), oxidation of the cholesterol (free radicals), stress hormones, lack of exercise, and the genetic uniqueness of the individual. While mainstream treatment is geared only to reduce cholesterol and reduce blood pressure, in the hope this will prevent heart disease, the fact is that mortality due to this problem is on the rise!

Taking an integrative approach to heart health and cardiovascular disease may ideally include utilizing a team of professionals to coach you through the implementation of nutritional changes, stress reduction techniques, adjusting hormone imbalances, and so on. The same support would be appropriate for the treatment of type-II diabetes, osteoporosis, fatigue, auto-immune disease, hormone imbalances, and spinal pain.

Patients are beginning to see that the focus should be on the mechanisms of disease, illness, hormone imbalance, pain, and so on, and not so much on a perceived competition between conventional and non-conventional medicine. The real effort, as Jeffrey Bland, Ph.D., has stated, should be on a “systems biological approach” to understanding and resolving the illness within. By listening to the patient, taking an appropriate health history, along with a proper evaluation—physical exam, blood work, hormone profiling— a broader/multi-plan (integrative approach) can be implemented for disease management and resolution.

ive hundred years after explorer Ponce de Leon roamed the West Indies and Florida in search of a vigorrestoring “fountain of youth,” we have yet to come up with a way to turn back time. But according to physicians and researchers at the cutting edge of anti-aging research, we’re learning a lot about how to keep the signs of aging at bay.

“We’re seeing a ton of compelling research lately on how to slow down the clock and live better and longer,” says Dr. Andrew Weil, an integrative physician and author of Healthy Aging: A Lifelong Guide to Your Well-Being.

“Happily, most of us will not have to age the way our parents and grandparents did.”

In the past decade, breakthrough research has radically changed our

understanding of why our brain, organs and skin age and what we can do, eat or apply to slow the process. Here’s a look at some of the latest science and the technologies to grow out of it.

Workouts for the Aging Brain Perhaps the greatest fear of an aging Baby Boomer is not flabby abs or wrinkling skin, but rather, the specter of a withering brain. connections that inevitably atrophy over time, stealing our cognitive sharpness. It turns out they were wrong.

“What we have learned in the past few years is that you can literally exercise your brain and add in new circuitry. You can rewire it,” says Professor Andrew Carle, director of the Program in Assisted Living/Senior Housing Administration at George Mason University, in Fairfax, Virginia.

The concept, called neuroplasticity, has spawned a $265 million braingame industry, according to consulting firm SharpBrains. More than 700 senior housing facilities now feature computer brain games, and “brain gyms” are popping up in cities nationwide. Such games are typically either downloadable programs for a home computer or a standalone game console. They challenge hand-eye coordination, auditory processing, memory and the ability to multitask. Typically, the program adapts as the user plays, throwing in new challenges.

Why not just read a book or do a crossword puzzle?

“These are already well-trodden neuronal pathways,” says California neuroscientist Henry Mahncke, Ph.D., vice president of research for brain game pioneer Posit Science. “We know from brain imaging studies that if you have

something that you are already good at and you do it, not much new lights up in the brain.”

By contrast, one 2006 study of 2,800 seniors, published in The Journal of the American Medical Association, found that those who engaged in a 10-session cognitive training program, with a four-session booster training at 11 and 35 months, had less difficulty with daily living than the control group.

More, they still showed heightened cognitive abilities five years later.

A 2009 study, published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, showed that 487 seniors who spent an hour a day, for eight weeks, using Posit’s brain fitness program performed better on mental acuity tests than the control group.

Just which game is best remains a matter of debate. Current options are on the table at Dakim.com, GamesForTheBrain.com, PositScience.com and VigorousMind.com.

“We still haven’t had a study comparing this $500 brain game to this $100 brain game to having someone who never did crossword puzzles start doing crossword puzzles,” relates Carle.

His advice: Find a new intellectual challenge that we enjoy enough to do regularly.

“Probably the best single factor in all of this is the extent to which the games get used,” he adds.

Anti-aging Supplements

When it comes to the aging of organs, much research in recent years has focused around the free radical theory.

In essence, as our body is exposed to food, air and sun, it throws off toxic byproducts, called free radicals, that eat away at cell walls, causing disease. In our youth, we have a built-in system of antioxidants that mop up free radicals.

in single-antioxidant supplements. But it turns out that their effect is minimal, “like a firefighter with one bucket, trying to put out a house fire,” McCord says.

Instead, he and others contend, we need to prompt the body to produce more of its own antioxidants. Several nutrients, including sulforaphane from broccoli, curcumin from turmeric, anthocyanins from berries, licorice and shallots, and the herbs milk thistle and ashwaghanda, have been shown to do that. Now, supplement companies are rolling out an array of new products, including Protandim by Life Vantage, a product that came out of McCord’s work, and GliSodin, by Isocell, aimed at boosting internal antioxidant production.

One 2006 trial conducted at the University of Colorado showed that when 29 people took Protandim, biochemical markers of oxidative stress declined by 40 percent after one month. Another study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science in 2007, found that a combination of sulforophane and curcumin reduced skin cancer in mice.

Meanwhile, researchers are exploring another compound, resveretrol, contained in the skins of red grapes, berries and dark beans, for its ability to slow aging by activating genes called sirtuins.

One 2008 study by the National Institute on Aging found that mice fed resveretrol had better balance and motor coordination, plus bone, heart and eye health. Human trials have been scarce, but several are ongoing. In the meantime, hundreds of resveratrol supplements have hit the market, and some doctors say they are confident in its safety and already taking it themselves.

“Based on the science, I don’t think there is a down side,” says Pittsburgh neuroscientist and physician Joseph Maroon, author of The Longevity Factor, published this year.

Healthy Skin

the antioxidant theory has spurred a host of new topical products, made with everything from marine pine bark and green tea to acai or gogi berry, all potent antioxidants. “One of the advantages to using it topically is that you can get a higher quantity of the active molecule in the skin, assuming it is in a form that penetrates through the epidermis,” she explains.

Weil says he sees the wealth of new anti-aging innovations as intriguing, but notes that one other critical factor for healthy aging often eludes people: To accept growing older and all the wisdom and experience it brings, with optimism, rather than dread.

“The denial of aging is counterproductive,” he says. “To age gracefully means to let nature take its course while doing everything in our power to delay and prevent disease.”

1: Roll on the Floor Laughing Laughing not only eases stress, promotes social bonding and lowers blood pressure; it may also boost your immune system. So bring some humor into your life, whether it’s through friends, a television show or something else that tickles your funny bone.

2: Don’t Skip Breakfast Eating fiber in the morning means less hunger late in the afternoon, when you’re most likely to feel tired and gorge yourself on sugar. My morning dose comes from steel-cut oatmeal, usually mixed with raisins, walnuts and flaxseed oil.

An early start on eating also keeps your metabolism more active throughout the day; breakfast eaters are thinner than people who just rush out the door.

3: Hit the Sack Jay and Dave are funny, but they’re not worth the strain on your system. Seven hours of sleep a night not only helps you live longer, it a l s o lowers your stress, sharpens your memory and reduces cravings for pantssplitting foods. Set a bedtime and stick to it. My target is 10:30 p.m. I record the late shows and then watch them the next day as I pedal a stationary bike.

4: Admire Your Work

Don’t be so trigger-happy with the flusher.

Turn around and take a look at your poop, which speaks volumes about your gut and overall health. Poop should be smooth and S-shaped, like your colon. If it comes out too lumpy, or drops into the bowl like marbles, you’re constipated; increase your fiber and water intake.

5: Don’t Pamper Your Bad Back

Even if you’re hunched over in agony, spending more time in bed will only make a bad back worse. The latest research shows that bed rest weakens back muscles and prolongs the suffering. Married men with this problem may suffer more than single men because they’re tempted to lie back and enjoy all the pampering they receive. The best solution is to get up, take a pain reliever and be a soldier.

6: Taste the Colors

Foods with bright, rich colors are packed with flavonoids and carotenoids, powerful compounds that bind with the damaging free radicals in your body, lowering inflammation. Eat nine fistfuls of colorful fruits and vegetables each day and you’ll reap the benefits without having to give up other foods. Whenever I shop the produce aisle, I’m reminded that these foods are often more powerful than the drugs sold in pharmacies. My favorites are arugula and blueberries.

7: Brushing is Not Enough If you plan to spend your later years eating more than yogurt and apple sauce, invest in some floss. No matter how thoroughly or long you brush your teeth, you’re missing a good portion of their total surface. That’s like washing one armpit after a workout. But the dangers of skipping floss go beyond hygiene: The bacteria that linger can increase your risk of heart disease.

8: Take a Deep Belly Breath

Do this anywhere, anytime. Push out your bellows and suck air through your nose until your lungs are full. They’ll fill with nitric oxide, a chemical found in the back of your nose that opens up blood vessels. The dose of oxygen will make you feel happier and more alert.

9: Join a Yoga Class

Yoga is the most important exercise of my daily routine.

Being surrounded by beautiful women in spandex should be reason enough to join a class, but if you need more motivation, consider this: Yoga eases stress, lowers blood pressure, slows heart rate and increases flexibility.

There’s nothing mystical about it. Loosening your muscles will make them more adaptable, so you may be less likely to injure yourself playing sports. Sure, some of the poses may look ridiculous, but that’s for a reason. Yoga can reach and work muscles that are ignored during routine sports and daily life. My favorite maneuver is the sun salutation.

10: Don’t Be an Island

Ever wonder why women live longer than men?

One major reason is that they form tight networks and actually talk about their problems. If you face life’s stresses alone, you will make yourself older. With another person’s love and support, the inner aging associated with stress can be reduced.

11: Avoid Fad Diets

The secret to weight loss is not to avoid carbs, fats, yellow foods, solid foods or foods that start with the letter G. The real trick is to lower your daily intake by about 100 calories.

You’ll hardly notice, but it’ll add up to a loss of about 10 pounds in a year. Calorie restriction has been shown to lengthen life (in rats and monkeys). I cut back once a year to reset my appetite and taste buds. Healthy foods taste great afterwards.

12: Be a Smart Patient

Professionals can help keep you in good health, but the responsibility ultimately falls on you. Seek a second opinion before undergoing any medical procedure, because 30 percent of the time, that opinion will change the diagnosis or plan.

Keep a written medical history and educate yourself about any family problems. You might even consider signing onto Microsoft HealthVault or Google Health, so your files would be accessible in case you find yourself in trouble away from home.

13: Lose the Beer Belly

Most men fasten their belts below their waists. It’s just another way of avoiding the truth about their gut. Grab a tape measure and put it around your body at the level of your belly button. That number should be less than half your height. For my six-foot, one-inch frame, for example, I need to keep my waist under 36.5 inches. If avoiding heart attacks and diabetes isn’t enough motivation to eliminate that gut, consider this: For every point your body mass index is over 25, your testosterone drops 3 percent, which isn’t very manly.

14: Go Green

I drink green tea three times a day.

It’s packed with heart-boosting and cancer-stopping polyphenols that black tea doesn’t offer. These beneficial chemicals are lost when it’s fermented. Green tea also delivers a boost of alertness, but from a smaller dose of caffeine than black tea.

17: Have as Much Sex as Possible

If a 50-something man could have sex 700 times a year, the exercise and stress reduction would make him look and feel years younger. I wouldn’t recommend quitting your day job in order to hit that number—but what’s the harm in trying? The next time your loved one says she has a headache, tell her she’s literally killing you. It works for me.

18: Know Your Numbers, then Aim Lower

Take the part of your brain dedicated to your local steak house’s phone number and reassign it to your heart’s vital signs. These include blood pressure (which ideally should be below 115 over 75), LDL cholesterol (under 100), resting heart rate (under 70), and fasting blood sugar (under 100).

If your numbers aren’t ideal, change your diet until they improve.

19: Add Some Weights

Just 30 minutes twice a week spent lifting weights can build significant muscle mass. What’s more, working all that muscle burns tons of calories, making it a great way to lose your gut, too. Don’t have weights?

Try lifting yourself: Pull-ups are the most valuable musclebuilding exercises I do. Trainer Bob Greene pointed out to me that pull-ups work the back, pecs, arms and belly all at once.

Because you’re lifting yourself, you’ll think twice before eating that doughnut, because you’ll just have to lift it later. A simple setup in a door frame is convenient and inexpensive.

20: Grab Your Nuts

Nuts are among the best sources of healthful fats and protein around. I keep a bag of walnuts in my fridge and use their massive dose of omega-3 fatty acids to boost my brainpower while I see patients. Half of a handful eaten about 30 minutes before a meal will temper your appetite and help you avoid the drive-thru.

21: No, Seriously, Grab Your Nuts

Testicular cancer is the most common cancer in men ages 15 to 35, but it’s usually curable if caught early enough. I strongly urge you to grab your testicles and check them for bumps at least once a month.

Each testicle should feel smooth and slightly soft, and one should hang slightly lower than the other, like two avocados (which, in Aztec, actually means “testicles”) growing on a tree.

22: Hit the Dance Floor

Crosswords and card games aren’t the only way to keep a brain razor sharp. It turns out that any kind of dancing with complex moves is stimulating enough to give neurons a workout. Even the simplest moves provide some physical exercise.

Kayaking with Kids

e began kayaking with our son, Justin, when he was only a few months old, understanding that the earlier children become accustomed to being in a boat, the sooner everyone can enjoy the benefits of exploring the outdoors together.

By the age of five, Justin was paddling his own recreational kayak, and a year later he was confidently in charge of his own sea kayak.

Unlike a canoe, where small children have limited visibility and support, a kayak provides a more interactive experience. Some cockpits are even large enough for a small child to be safely supported on an adult’s lap, so they can take in the new world around them while maintaining the warmth and security of direct contact with Mom or Dad. What a wonderful way to solidify the bond between a child and parent, by sealing it with nature itself.

The first few trips together must be a positive experience to set the tone for future adventures, so make a special effort to create fun and interesting paddling experiences. Pick short destinations not more than 30 minutes away, so the family can stop and picnic.

Bring snacks and drinks for the cruise along the shoreline, noting and explaining nature’s intriguing sights and sounds.

Unlike in canoes, young children sit low enough in kayaks so that regardless of size, they are able to touch the water and splash it around. A wooden kitchen spoon makes a great first paddle; just remember to drill a small hole for a wrist leash, unless everyone wants to spend the day retrieving it 50 times.

How has yoga helped you?

Yoga is an anchor in my life. It’s hard to imagine what life would be like without yoga. Physically, it’s always been there for me from childhood. In my teens and early 20s, I surfed and participated in martial arts competitions. Yoga not only gave me a background for all the sports I participated in, it provided a platform for my athletic training and helped heal and rebuild my body after injuries.

In my 30s, and now my 40s, yoga has been my pillar as I enter new phases of life. In challenging times, yoga has been like a friend that helped me work through stress and emotions. It’s a tool that continues to help me find peace and freedom, as well as personal power.

Which yoga skill is the most useful in everyday life?

In Baptiste yoga, we emphasize being present in the moment by connecting

with the body, which we consider to be an anchor for the mind.

For example, when an individual who lives largely in their head is asked to connect with their breath, foot or leg while holding a yoga pose, they immediately come into the present moment. This is a strong tool to take off the mat and into everyday life.

When we take the time to connect again and again throughout the day to our breath or to our body, we are drawn away from the mental concepts and imaginings of the mind and back to our center. This simple act empowers us in all situations and in our relationships.

The true effectiveness of yoga shows when we take our practice into life situations. I have three sons, ages 17, 14 and 10. Teenagers communicate on a different level because they are trying to make their own way in the world and find their sense of self; I now find myself interacting with my two older sons on a new level. When they were younger, I called the shots, but now they want to do that, which results in a back-and-forth dance of communication. When I am practicing yoga, I find that instead of reacting to their challenges from a position of control, I am centered, calm and less reactive. Rather than giving them something to rebel against, I am able to respond more consciously.

Overall, when I am centered and grounded in my body and breathing, I’m not in my head, intellectualizing about what is happening. Rather, I’m connected with my heart center. Immediately, my perception shifts from thoughts of the past or future into the present, which is the best place to be, because I’m with “what is, as is,” and I can respond from a place of compassion. I like that I feel more complete when I’m engaged with my children.

What advice do you give someone who wants to begin a yoga practice?

An all-day immersion experience is a great way to start. Then, practicing yoga daily for at least 20 to 30 minutes is better than practicing for one hour three times a week A regular yoga practice has cumulative results: The body changes and becomes stronger, deals better with stress and benefits from enhanced energy flows; practitioners enjoy an overall feeling of well-being and a sense of ease within their own body.

READY, SET, GRILL ANYTHING! Serve Up a Sustainable-Style Feast

ood backyard chefs know the distinction between barbecue and grilling and revel in trying new tricks with their favorite tools while they cook up a fun feast for family and friends.

Few, however, may know that the original barbecue, or barbacoa, was the term that Spanish explorers used to describe the meat smoking and drying methods introduced to them by native peoples in the Americas.

Smoke originally was used to drive away bugs while lending a tasty flavor to their meat-preparing process. This slow, low temperature method of outdoor cooking still employs an indirect heat source, like hot coals, and cooking times of between two and 12 hours. In some recipes, burning Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-certified mesquite or wood chips adds a smoky flavor to the food; in others, it tenderizes it. Grilling, by contrast, uses higher temperatures and direct heat from flames. Cooking times range between three and 30 minutes and grilled meats rarely have a smoky taste.

Charcoal Choices Lump Charcoal ~ A favorite choice of “green” grillers, lump charcoal is made of

either natural wood (from trees or sawmills) or processed wood (from building material scraps, furniture remnants, pallets, flooring scraps, etc.). FSC-certified charcoal and coconut shell charcoal are good bets. Lump charcoal will burn hot and fast if unlimited oxygen is available, so it is best suited for grills that allow the user to control the airflow.

Charcoal Briquettes ~ Briquettes are useful when cooking on an open grill or whenever airflow can’t be controlled. But avoid self-starting instant-light briquettes and lighter fluid, which contain several harmful additives. Note that most commercial briquettes consist of crushed charcoal mixed with some additives that improve combustibility and bind the charcoal together. The mixture is compressed into uniform, pillow-shaped chunks that generally burn slowly at a constant temperature, regardless of airflow.

Be aware that additives in briquettes can leave a bad taste in food and even be harmful if not fully burned off; always burn charcoal for the time recommended by the manufacturer before putting food on the grill.

A good lighting method begins with an electric charcoal starter or a metal charcoal chimney starter. Other igniting

What to Grill Grassfed Meats ~ The number one rule for cooking pastured meat is not to overcook it. It needs about 30 percent less cooking time than fattier conventional beef and tastes best if cooked medium-rare to medium. If cooking hamburgers made with pasture-raised beef, add caramelized onions or other moisturizing ingredients to compensate for the leaner meat.

Chicken or Pork ~ Consider brining the meat beforehand to ensure that it is extra tender and won’t dry out on the grill. Submerge the meat in a mixture of one cup of table salt and one gallon of very cold or ice water for up to 24 hours before grilling. For a crispy skin, remove meat from the brine, pat dry and refrigerate for a couple of hours before cooking.

Ultimate Burgers ~ Shannon Hayes, author of The Grassfed Gourmet Cookbook, cites Loren Olsen’s “Tips for Cooking the Ultimate Hamburger.” Before placing over medium-high heat on a clean, hot grill (which may be swiped with olive oil), Olsen recommends preparing patties by gently pressing the center to create a small depression in one side to assure even cooking. But

Even brief dips before cooking are beneficial, but for best results, marinate food for at least one hour or overnight before grilling.

The homemade marinades featured here contain far less fat and sodium than most commercial brands (they can even double as salad dressings or stirfry condiments). So feast with a glad heart on a warm summer’s day or eve— the heat is on and the eating’s good.

Ginger-Garlic Sauce Makes about 1½ cups

This basic marinade is your jumping-off point for a host of variations. Any leftover sauce can be refrigerated in a tightly sealed container.

2 tbsp fresh ginger, minced 4 cloves garlic, minced 1 green onion, white part only, minced 6 tbsp low-sodium organic soy sauce ¼ cup rice wine or sake 2 tbsp lemon juice ¼ cup rice vinegar 1½ tbsp sesame oil Mix all ingredients in a small container. Use immediately or store in the refrigerator for up to one week.

Spicy Sesame Sauce

To the ginger-garlic sauce, add 3 tablespoons black sesame seeds and 2 teaspoons minced fresh red chili pepper. Mix well.

Honey-Basil Sauce

Using the ginger-garlic sauce recipe, replace ginger and green onion with ¼ cup fresh basil leaves, minced, and replace the sesame oil with 1 tablespoon of flavored olive oil. Add ½ tablespoon honey and mix well.

Apricot-Ginger Glaze

Use the ginger-garlic sauce recipe, but replace the rice wine, lemon juice and rice vinegar with ¾ cup apricot jam. Combine all ingredients in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 2 minutes, whisking steadily.

For a sustainable table, use cloth napkins and reusable plates, cups and utensils. For larger crowds, choose recycled or compostable goods made from non-food biomaterials. don’t press or poke the burgers while cooking, in order to preserve the juicy interior. Season with natural salt and freshly ground pepper. Leave the grill uncovered and cook to a minimum internal temperature of 160° F. For sixounce patties, grill 2-1/2 minutes on the first side and 3 minutes after flipping for a medium burger. Toast split buns on the grill rack for the last 45 to 60 seconds of the cooking time.

Special Veggie Burgers ~ Simply clean a few portobello mushroom caps and brush them with garlic-infused olive oil (put a couple of crushed cloves in the oil 30 minutes before using) and set aside. Next, slice an apple lengthwise to get the biggest possible slices and soak in water and lemon juice, which will keep them from drying out on the grill. Then, put the mushrooms on a hot grill, gill side down and carefully lay the apples down on the coolest part of the grill. When the mushrooms have softened (5-8 minutes), flip them, place the apples on top and cover with slices of brie cheese. Serve on a grilltoasted bun.

Hot Dogs ~ Choose hot dogs that are produced by sustainable meat companies and do not contain any fillers, byproducts or additives, like MSG or nitrates. Or, skip the meat altogether and try a vegetarian soy dog.

Veggies ~ The key is to use locally grown, sustainably raised/organic fruits and vegetables. Natural flavors come through from produce picked within a

day or so of eating, preempting the need for many seasonings or sauces. Just brush on some extra-virgin olive oil and sprinkle on natural salt and fresh-ground pepper to taste to enjoy both favorites and exotic veggies straight from the grill.

Vegetables don’t need the same high heat that meat does, so it’s best to cook them over medium heat toward the sides of the grill.

Corn on the Cob ~ Just pull out the silks at the top of each ear and brush a little oil on the husks. Cook for about 10 minutes, flipping once to cook both sides.

Grilled Asparagus ~ Brush with olive oil, season to taste and grill for 4 to 5 minutes.

Potatoes ~ It’s easy to slice or dice potatoes and onions; wrap in foil, throw in some organic butter and place on the upper rack of the grill. Put them on first, because potatoes take 35 to 45 minutes; flip the package over half-way through cooking.

Vegetable Kebabs ~ Experiment with a variety of veggies. Metal skewers are best, but wood or bamboo also work fine if first soaked in water for at least 30 minutes, so they don’t catch fire. To help prevent food from falling through the slats, use larger pieces, and then cut before serving.

Fruits ~ Fruits cook most evenly over low heat. The best option for grilling fruit is to wait until the coals begin to die down. Fruit is done when it gets soft and shows dark grill marks. The natural sugars will caramelize where the grill touches the fruit, creating tasty crunchy bits.

Some grilling aficionados say that almost any fruit can be grilled and taste delicious, even with the skin on. Some people like to brush on olive oil or melted organic butter; others feel the taste can overpower the flavor of the fruit.

Softer fruits and vegetables like peaches and squash might need to be placed on foil poked with holes or a cooking tool equivalent. Note that fruits tend to have a high water content that can make them extremely hot to touch, so cool a little before eating and taste test before digging in.

Cheese ~ Halloumi, a white, semi-hard cheese from Cyprus, is a wonderful grilling cheese. Brush it with oil and grill in large chunks, or pair it with fruit, like apples or pineapple, in a kebab. It is done when it softens and shows grill marks.

Pizza ~ This is an easy show-stopper. Roll out a favorite pizza dough and oil one side liberally. Place oil side down on a hot grill and cook until a crispy crust forms. Flip and add pre-grilled toppings, then close the grill. Cook until the bottom of the pizza has turned golden brown and toppings have melted together. Remove using tongs. For a dessert pizza, follow the same process, but top the pizza with a sweet cheese like mascarpone and grilled peaches, then sprinkle fresh mint on this special treat.
