Three fifth graders from the Class of Castiglione experience the bonds of brotherhood during Nativity’s four-week summer program.
FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends,
This is my tenth year as President of Nativity Prep, and I am more convinced than ever that I have the best job in the world! Of course, serving as President is much more than a job – it’s a vocation. Presiding over the Nativity community as it gathers each day to learn, teach, coach, compete, collaborate, counsel, pray, and serve - is a labor of love. Our Jesuit tradition asks us to give without counting the cost, to toil without seeking for rest, and to labor without asking for reward. St. Paul would recognize this labor of love as one that “bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things.” At Nativity we seek to break the cycle of poverty, close the achievement gap for boys of color, and increase the college completion rate for first-generation college students. Happily, our ambitious goals are shared today by a growing number of non-profits. But Nativity Prep offers something more. Family is the secret ingredient we add to the mix. We might even go so far as to say that family is our mission. We want our students to understand themselves as members of the human family – people of all cultures and creeds gathered together as brothers and sisters, called to serve each other generously, for the greater glory of God. This experience of human family empowers our Nativity boys to become men for others.
Anyone who walks through our front door encounters the family spirit of Nativity. We are a large clan made up of students, parents, teachers, trustees, benefactors, alumni, volunteers, high school & college partners, and mentors in the professional world. Our students mature through middle school and high school with help from the Nativity family, supporting them each step of the way. And that familial support follows Nativity grads into college, when first-generation college students too often abandon their dreams for success. Thanks to your generous support, our Nativity students can dream big and succeed. We are deeply grateful to you for joining the Nativity family and sharing in our labor of love.
Gratefully,
Rev. John C. Wronski, SJ

NURTURING NATIVITY BOYS A love that bears all things PARTNERING WITH PARENTS When a boy enrolls at Nativity, no time is wasted in welcoming him and his parents into the community that quickly becomes their extended family and second home. Since students spend over 12 hours a day and 11 months a year engaged in opportunities for learning, they come to know their classmates as brothers, while their parents see Nativity teachers as true partners in the rearing of their sons.

2016 An n uAl R ep oRt of G i vi n G
A typical day at Nativity is long and rigorous. Students arrive as early as 7:30am and stay as late as 8:00pm. The daily routine of roll-call, announcements, and prayer at morning assembly sets the tone for a day filled with learning that engages the whole person – mind, body and spirit. Character and competence are built through individualized instruction that meets the boys where they are and challenges them to become the men God created them to be. Academic classes are followed by two hours of
sports and activities that teach teamwork, creativity and social skills. Extracurriculars run the gamut from soccer, basketball, baseball, running and lacrosse to music, drama, debate, chess, cooking and newspaper. Three nights a week, a nutritious dinner is followed by two hours of evening study supervised by Nativity teachers and volunteer tutors. On Saturdays, Nativity students participate in community service activities in the larger Boston community. The virtues of gratitude and generosity remain at the center of our daily spiritual practice at Nativity. We call each other to be giving and thankful throughout our busy days and to find God in all things, in all people, in all places – from the classroom, to the gym, to the lunch room and the library. We celebrate a host of liturgical seasons and holy days marked by the world’s great religions, while remaining rooted in the Catholic tradition. Growing up in the Nativity family helps all our students, no matter their religion, to learn that union with God is inseparable from communion with each other.

LAUNCHING YOUNG MEN
A love that believes all things EXTENDING THE FAMILY Nativity Prep’s graduation ceremony ritualizes the family spirit that is at the heart of our mission. The graduation procession is led by current students (often younger brothers of the graduates) graduates who carry class banners representing all the alumni who blazed the trail before them. Nativity’s faculty, staff and trustees are the next to process in, while the graduates gather with their parents at the back of the church. Carrying bouquets of yellow roses, mothers and fathers beam with pride as they walk up the aisle arm-in-arm with their sons.
Preparation for the transition from Nativity Prep to Boston’s most selective high schools begins in earnest during the 7th grade, when members of the Graduate Support Office work individually with students and their parents to prepare for the high school application process. Test-prep, essay writing, interview coaching, campus visits and financial aid advice are just a few services that we offer to help find the best high school fit for each student. A deep understanding of students and close partnerships with high school admissions officers produce strong results and rewarding matches. No family has to do this work alone.
Nativity’s graduation ceremony is a big deal for our students and their families. But it is only the first of many graduations they will experience. Nativity teaches the habit of graduating - from middle school, from high school, from college, and beyond.

WE HAVE NO LIMIT “Success is what we’re all striving for. Today, we’ve gotten a little closer to it, but we aren’t finished yet. We must never forget where we came from. We must always be men for others. We must never let good enough be enough. And we must always strive toward greatness. Remember, the people who say the sky is our limit are always wrong. We have no limit.”

Awards presented at the graduation ceremony include the Barry Hynes Nativity Spirit Award, the William Campbell, SJ Sportsmanship Award, and the Highest Grade Point Average Award.

SUPPORTING GRADUATES A love that hopes all things THE POWER OF MENTORING Nativity Prep’s comprehensive Graduate Support Program assures that every alumnus receives the guidance, assistance, and advice he needs to succeed in high school, college, and beyond. For each one of our graduates, Nativity remains a second home where the advice and support needed to succeed as a first generation college student can be found. It’s crucial that our graduates transition well into the high schools and colleges where they enroll. They need to find friends, manage their time, keep up their grades, nurture their spiritual lives, and contribute to the extracurricular life of their new schools. They need to make good choices about what courses to take, what help to seek, and what pitfalls to avoid. They need coaching in self-advocacy, and
10

sometimes they need help closing financial aid gaps that all too often prevent first generation college students from completing their degrees. They also need opportunities to network with potential employers who can provide opportunities for summer internships and job interviews that will launch their careers. Nativity’s graduate support team and growing cohort of mentors work tirelessly with the dedication and devotion of an extended family to ensure that our alumni have success stories to share. In the second half of high school, when the college selection and admission process begins, our grads count on us to help them navigate yet another important transition in their lives. College tours, financial aid advice, and application assistance lead to successful college enrollments while ongoing guidance, campus visits, and scholarship aid result in completion of degrees and commencement of careers.

NATIVITY BIG BROTHERS MENTORING PROGRAM “Nativity created a brotherhood that I will never forget. My Big Brother at Nativity happened to be my Sponsor, Joe Turo. While I was only formally in the Big Brothers program with Joe for two years, we have maintained our strong relationship. We often go to games, or a movie, or just talk about life. It is really helpful to have someone to look up to in the occupation that I hope to be in one day.” LUC BENJAMIN Nativity Prep 2013, BC High 2017

PAYING IT FORWARD
A love that endures all things COMING FULL CIRCLE Perhaps the greatest measure of Nativity’s success is the large number of alumni who have returned to the school in some capacity to give back to the community that gave so much to them. Countless graduates - now doctors, businessmen, teachers, artists, bankers, pastors, and servicemen - have offered their time, talent and treasure to ensure that a new generation of Nativity students receives the same kind of familial support that helped them become successful professionals and men for others. These generous alumni have served as volunteer teachers, graduate support directors, trustees, tutors, cooks, coaches, counselors, commencement speakers, committee members, and summer camp counselors. The impact they make on the lives of our current students is deep and enduring. The gratitude they express and
the generosity they demonstrate proves that our mission to build the human family is making an impact beyond our wildest dreams.
PRAYER FOR GENEROSITY Lord, teach me to be generous. Teach me to serve you as you deserve; To give and not to count the cost, To fight and not to heed the wounds, To toil and not to seek for rest, To labor and not to ask for reward, Save that of knowing that I do your will. Amen.

STUDENT SPONSORSHIP PROGRAM
Ms. Phyllis Campbell
Mr. Walter J. Carroll Mr. & Mrs. Norman Gaut celebrate the graduation of their sponsored student, Andy Duong.
Sponsoring students at Nativity Prep is a personal and powerful experience. You can participate in the following ways:
✓ STUDENT SPONSOR: All students attend Nativity on a
full scholarship. Sponsorship at this level defrays a portion of the cost of educating one boy for one school year.
✓ GRADUATE SPONSOR: Your annual gift sponsors both a current student and helps support a young alumnus in high school or college.
✓ CLASS PATRON: Your generosity at this leadership
level underwrites the cost of educating an entire class of 15 boys. It impacts the life of that class over a five-year period and well beyond.

FOR THE NEXT GENERATION . . . A Promise secured 2016 SECURING THE PROMISE CAMPAIGN
We are thrilled to announce that our $10 million Securing the Promise capital campaign is now complete! thanks to the persistence of our campaign committee and the generosity of all those who have supported this multi-year capital effort, nativity continues to serve more students through the addition of a fourth grade; the school’s upgraded technology and lab resources now support state-of-the art instruction; a growing master teacher faculty ensures a consistently high quality of teaching and learning; and our expanded Graduate support office is providing everything from college tours to last-dollar aid for alumni making their way to and through college. the firm foundation of a solid endowment will help to provide a stable family environment at nativity prep for generations to come. thank you for helping us to reach this goal so our students can reach for the stars!

the Mission Nativity Preparatory School is an accredited, tuition-free, Jesuit middle school serving boys of all faiths from low-income families residing in Boston. Staffed by experienced teachers and dedicated volunteers who work closely with families, the school prepares students for success in high school and college. Nativity’s academically challenging and highly structured environment helps students grow in a love for learning and an abiding sense of responsibility to their community. In the Jesuit tradition, the school promotes the intellectual, spiritual, social and physical growth that inspires boys from Boston to become men for others.
