GiGi Ma’at: a Case of Mistaken Identity It would be a travesty to turn GiGi Ma’at into a cliché-cluttered page of fashion phrases and the ghastly like. Let’s cut out the overused “stylish”, “trend-setter” and “fabulous”. Let’s remove the “diva”.

Truth is, GiGi Ma’at is a humble and worldly twenty-five year-old with innate dramatic flair and a wicked sense of humour. She laughs at her own jokes. GiGi Ma’at eats dessert before dinner and sips coffee at 9:30 at night. She grew her dreadlocks, cut them, then sewed locks back on years later. What we’re trying to tell you is that GiGi Ma’at is not normal. “You know, sometimes you just notice there’s something different about you?” She posed a genuine question with a furrowed brow. “Yes, I don’t know what it is, I don’t know why. I’m yet to manifest whatever that is, but what I can tell you is that I’ve never really felt normal. Ever.”

She dyes her clothes with this abnormality and her style is flabbergasting. Although popular in Barbados as a style icon, hairdresser and singer, GiGi’s many travels have also taught her to be unassuming, thoughtful and utterly true to herself as a creative individual. “I think I just became more comfortable with myself and happier with my difference and with the fact that not being like other people is kind of great and it doesn’t matter what people are doing anyway. You kind of just have to be who you are.” The liberation of the five-foot-two giant extended to her wardrobe. 7

“I’m not crazy, I’m just a creative person expressing myself.

Sweater available at Pulze Necklaces available at Pulze Satchel available at Pulze

“It’s just how I feel when I get up. Sometimes, I get up and I want to be Savile Row, London, so I’m going to be super-tailored. Some mornings I feel I want to be a Cali girl or do this Arizona kind of thing and I’ll do a fringed shirt and a lace skirt and daisy dukes.” She looks like Oxford Street. She looks like Soho. She looks like the Caribbean and she looks like France. Having visited these places and more, GiGi Ma’at, born Mikhaila Farier, says experiences abroad and further enlightenment made her want to become part of the style movement. “I’d go into the parks and just sit down and observe different people and their haircuts, the bracelets around their arms, their rings, their nail polish, their henna, their tattoos, their shirts, their skirts, their dresses, their socks, everything. And I just loved it.” Her own look usually begins with a solid foundation of basic pieces, like a white button-up shirt, dark or light denims or other classic pieces. It is her personality and her accessories which she believes give her outfits breath. “I like indigenous jewellery,” she hummed, flourishing an ornamented wrist. “And I like a lot of ethnic-looking or South African jewellery. I like a lot of chunky rings. So, semi precious stones like amber and amethyst set in silver or something like that. I’ve always liked stuff like that. A lot of jewelry that has that native American influence. And then just natural stuff, like woods and shells.” And this girl says the human body is the greatest canvas ever, but she uses hers like a chalkboard; to teach. This is because her philosophies are sewn into her clothes, to be shared with anyone brave enough to ask “why?” Her outspoken wardrobe shrilly screams over the meek Barbadian crowd, but she believes that in time, locals could also raise their pitch. “Down here [in Barbados], we have our own little styles trickling down. I can’t say that many people are really, really unique unless you see that they’ve stepped outside

8

and experienced a more holistic environment, but it’s working its way in slowly. I think people are starting to evolve and I think our kids will be the people to create the revolutionary difference and I guess that starts with us; little by little makes a lot.” And as radical as she appears, she is eager to stir that radical creativity in someone else. “I hope I can inspire people,” GiGi Ma’at says, looking at her hands. “That’s important to me. It makes you feel that you have created some small change in the

world. I think everybody inspires somebody else at some point in time, sometimes in the most miniscule ways when you don’t even know it. I think that’s the best kind of inspiration.” Callous comments come, as they do with any outsidethe-box persona. However, the “tough cookie” embraces her clothes, hair, piercings and ideologies as part of who she was always meant to be. “I’m not crazy, I’m just a creative person expressing myself. I think it’s crazy that people are afraid to express themselves. I think that’s scary. I’ve probably been labelled everything under the sun but I mostly just like to label myself as Mikhaila. GiGi, that’s it. So take it, run with it, but I’m happy with me.”
