The National Trust Heritage Awards is an annual celebration of outstanding practice in the field of heritage. This commemorative publication showcases the 2024 finalist results, and provides a reflection of all the outstanding winners recognised across the last 30 years.

Aileen Sage with Djinjama, Jean Rice, Dr Noni Boyd and the City of Sydney Council

Creating a sense of being surrounded by the land, the judges were impressed by the use of materials reclaimed from Country. 119 Redfern Street was described by judges as a fantastic project with a “sensitive touch” that has brought the space to life for the community to enjoy.

A brilliant initiative that successfully advocated for community space to swim in Sydney Harbour at Barangaroo Reserve, and later, enhanced safety and accessibility. Judges were impressed by the three-year community campaign that has already had a fantastic impact on visitors who can now enjoy a swim in this iconic spot.

Sydney Tramway Museum

A well-researched and executed project that showed a fantastic amount of technical skill and community stamina. The result is an impressive restoration of great authenticity, integrity and sensitivity, 62 years in the making.

A superbly subtle and sensitive project that involved strong engagement with the original designer, Bruce Mackenzie. The result is timeless. West Head Lookout is a beautiful response to place, heritage and character.

The University of Sydney, University of NSW, EPFL (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne)

A remarkable body of work that brilliantly showcases the significance of a much-loved Australian icon. Judges described the scale of research which involved analysis of involved thousands of original construction drawings and documents as “simply phenomenal”.

An outstanding and complex project driven by the local community that engages all of the senses and exudes authenticity. This is a stunning interpretation of Dharawal culture and history, and a nurturing space embedded in storytelling for all to enjoy.

Heritage Skills Award

Recognising dedication, mastery and consistent application of heritage skills and practices: this individual award shines a light on not only the accomplishments and craft of the winner, but the need to sustain heritage skills so that excellence in conservation and care for our heritage can continue.

HERITAGE SKILLS AWARD

Lee Adamou

Lee is a Heritage Roofer who has dedicated 50 years to his craft. Through his exceptional trade skills, Lee has made an incredible contribution to the conservation of built heritage in NSW. Lee’s work on heritage significant buildings requires specialised knowledge and abilities. From the intricate copper and lead detailing on the Chief Secretary’s Building to the decorative slate-work on the circular roof of the former chapel at the old Darlinghurst Gaol, Lee has worked some of the State’s most complex conservation projects.

Lifetime Achievement Award

Celebrating individuals who have dedicated their career and passion to the conservation, care, promotion and protection of New South Wales’ built, natural and cultural heritage.

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Vale Chris Betteridge

Chris developed his knowledge of cultural landscapes at the NSW Department of Planning from 1978. Later he worked with the Tourism Commission NSW and Royal Botanic Gardens. He also celebrated more than 30 years of consulting.

He was a member of the Heritage Advisory Committee for the City of Parramatta and Historic Houses Trust of Australia, Cemeteries Adviser to the National Trust, Heritage Adviser to Wollondilly & Port Stephens and founding member of the Australian Garden History Society.

Chris strongly promoted the conservation of cultural landscapes, advocated for the legislative protection of historic gardens and for the academic study of garden design, often in a volunteer capacity. He contributed to many forums, workshops and submissions.

Chris’ numerous scholarly publications will continue to provide inspiration to many and his life’s work leaves NSW with a valuable legacy.

Sophie Canaris

Sophie is a passionate advocate for heritage protection, sustainability and thoughtful design for historic places. She has worked with State Heritage listed projects across Australia and Grade II listed places in the UK.

In Sophie’s role as Associate –Heritage and Culture at DunnHillam, she successfully led the Gunnery Transformation project, displaying excellent leadership and maturity.

Sophie has applied her knowledge through mentoring at DunnHillam, teaching at the University of Sydney, and advocacy as a committee member for the Emerging Architects and Graduates Network of the Australian Institute of Architects.

Dr Jillian Comber

Dr Jillian Comber’s outstanding career has spanned well over three decades, two states and multiple roles in both the public and private sector, including a period as Director of Parramatta Park and most recently as a respected heritage consultant.

Often working with Aboriginal, regional and rural communities in NSW and QLD, Jillian has consistently been a staunch supporter of communities and professionals working together in heritage management. She has been a tireless mentor for emerging archaeologists including the development and training of First Nations cultural
