K+ P Foundation News Chairman’s comment What a great personal honour it is that I was asked and elected to chair this Board on behalf of the Kariyarra and Palyku people.

I am aware that it will be a very demanding position. I can assure the people of both communities that I will endeavour to work with them to achieve the common goals of all those involved.

As far as I know this is the first time that two communities have chosen to combine their resources to collaborate on the delivery of sustainable, environmentally friendly and socially responsible projects and enterprise opportunities for their people.

I look forward to being in the Pilbara country again and meeting people in the Kariyarra and Palyku communities. Together we can work to make our dreams a reality.

It will be an exciting, challenging and worthwhile journey for all of us and perhaps a useful example for other communities in the future.

K+P Foundation news

Building capacity of the K+P Foundation – from the ground up!

The K+P Foundation Board unveiled its governance calendar on 28 March 2014.

The purpose of the calendar is to ensure the K+P Foundation Board builds its capacity in board governance. Your Committee Members are dedicated and are working towards the final goal of K+P being self sufficient.

This month the K+P Foundation Board were asked to complete a conflict of interest form in accordance with the Board’s approved Conflict of Interest Policy. This meant that each Committee Member declared their business interests and provided it to the Company Secretary.

The K+P Foundation Board agrees that its primary purpose is about bringing as many opportunities to the Palyku and Kariyarra communities. The K+P Foundation Board is dedicated to working in an open and transparent manner, such that there is no perceived favouritism.

Administration of RHI cross cultural awareness training The Kariyarra and Palyku Working Groups tasked the K+P Foundation with the administration of the RHI cross cultural awareness training (‘CCAT’) to RHI employees, contractors and subcontractors.

This is an enormous administrative task with an estimated 2000 people to complete the CCAT training over the next 18 months. The K+P Board enthusiastically accepted this task as it recognises that this learning will give everyone a better appreciation of heritage, lore, culture and customs.

The K+P Foundation will not be delivering the content of the CCAT. Rather K+P will be responsible for: (a) (b)

liaising with RHI and CCAT attendees to confirm necessary travel arrangements; booking and remitting all flights, accommodation, meals, vehicles invoices; Page 2

remitting presenter fees; preparing room and handouts as required by presenters; account reconciliation.

The Board is pleased to advise that the capacity building which is at the heart of the work being undertaken at K+P has already commenced with Committee Member Louise Hansen being nominated to train in logistics and administration. Susan Clayton of MacLean Legal has developed a training program for Louise, which has been implemented. We are proud to advise that Louise with the assistance of Susan successfully organised our May Board Meeting. Congratulations Louise!

We hope to give you more updates in the future about the capacity building undertaken by the K+P Foundation.

Prequalification K+P Foundation Board recognises that it needs to begin the prequalification processes with Roy Hill. This is a substantial but necessary task which requires time, money or skill to produce and finalise. The Board is working with its Advisory Committee to draw on the necessary skills to ensure that K+P Foundation successfully completes the prequalification processes as soon as possible.

K+P Logo The K+P Foundation logo was developed by the Board to embody the two groups’ collaborative effort. The two trees are intertwined into one tree resembling the unity of the two communities.

The Board based the logo on a gum tree; a tree that grows on both Palyku and Kariyarra country.

If you had a time machine that would work only once, what point in the future or past would you visit?

I would like to be transported back to 1 May1946, so I can be part of the Pilbara Strike; Australia’s longest strike which saw 800 Aboriginal pastoral workers fight for fair pay and work conditions. We owe a lot to those brave men.

What are you hoping the K+P Foundation can do for the community?

My dream would be for K+P Foundation to deliver decent, well equipped pre-school facilities.

The pre-school facilities at the Tjulkaboorda Community are terrible with no airconditioning, yet the children still come. It would be wonderful for the children to be in a comfortable environment in which they can love learning.
