THE LADY TRADIE Aimee Stanton Talks Design
From building, creating DIY projects, living more sustainably & everything in between – Aimee Stanton leverages the power of her own story of failure & perseverance. A living example of the value of following a non-traditional pathway in life, Aimee believes that growth occurs personally and professionally when you are willing to step beyond your comfort zone.
In what proved to be pivotal year in Aimee’s career trajectory, 2017 highlighted her resourcefulness, resilience & ability to connect with her community. She ventured into the jungle for Australian Survivor, and challenged herself by walking 600km solo from Melbourne to Canberra. Not one to shy away from hard work, in the same year she co-founded ‘Tiny Stays’ with her brother Ben – a company that builds off-grid Tiny Houses’ & rents them out as short-term accommodation in Victoria.
Aimee’s can-do attitude has been a breath of fresh air on our TV screens, coming 2nd on Channel 7’s popular renovation show House Rules in 2020. Aimee & her partner Kayne were
fan favourites for their positive vibes, and laid-back attitude. Aimee continues to share her expertise alongside popular lifestyle brands to create DIY content, and in October 2023
Aimee launched her line of women's workwear, Zadie. As ‘The Lady Tradie’, Aimee has brought her bubbly, energetic energy to a male-dominated industry, and has succeeded in life on your own terms.
And now Aimee has turned her DIY skills to a project of the heart – her own home renovation. National Tiles worked with Aimee to bring her design vision to life.
Mural Spring Matt tiles flow seamlessly from the floor up the wall. Matching the front porch tiles with the balcony was a no-brainer, walking through the house, the elements flow together beautifully.
NT: You selected four different tile ranges –what appealed to you about each of these looks?
AS: Masia Ivory Gloss and Masia Olive Gloss looked beautiful together on my mood board. Laid in a simple dado rail format, they made the wall tiles shine and paired well with the Mystone Travertino Navona Matt floor tiles, which provided a perfect base. I always say you can sometimes pack the most punch in the smallest room of the house, and we definitely did that in the powder room using Mural Spring Matt tiles up the wall and across the floor. Don’t be afraid to go bold in small spaces, the result is worth it. When I saw the Bali Tuban Antracita InOut, I knew it was the perfect base for our porch and balcony. It’s non-slip, timeless, and adds so much interest and pattern to the area, a go-to for an outdoor space that will age beautifully.
NT: What was the process like, working directly with National Tiles on your tile and timber selection?
AS: Renovating can be a stressful time, so having National Tiles on board made the process so easy and seamless. From their knowledgeable in-store staff who helped me bring the vision to life, to the quickest and easiest delivery, it was a dream.
NT: You passionately advocate for females in the construction industry. What advice do you give young women who feel like they don’t ‘fit the mould’ but are itching to follow their own path?
AS: Don’t be scared. If you show up on time, are willing to learn, and build authentic connections with your colleagues—it’s not as scary as it looks. And don’t stress if you mess up—it’s all part of the journey. Most women do well in the construction industry because of their eye for detail and their passion. They’ve fought long and hard to earn respect on the tools.
NT: Your daily routine starts incredibly early – what inspired you to wake early to journal and organise your day, before working a full day, renovating a home and looking after your little one?
AS: I’ve had a solid morning routine for 10 years now (gym, sauna, meditation, cold shower, work). It started at 6am, then as I took on more, it got earlier and earlier—now somehow it’s ended up at 2:30am! Working for myself, I didn’t want to always be on my phone or laptop in front of my little one, so I get my work done while she sleeps. That way I can be 100% present during the day with my family. I’m not perfect, and I definitely listen to my body, but I’m usually in bed by 8–8:30pm. I’m actually pregnant now with another little girl on the way… but I don’t think I’ll be able to do earlier than 2:30am!
NT: With such a diverse career, from plumbing to TV presenting and DIY projects, what exciting projects or goals are you looking forward to next?
AS: There are a few exciting things in the works that I can’t mention just yet, but another baby is on the way too! I’m also focusing on my women’s workwear brand, Zadie Workwear, and continuing to build our tiny house BnB business, Tiny Stays. Hopefully we’ll get a few more tiny houses out across Melbourne soon.
NT: As someone who’s overcome many obstacles and broken barriers, what advice would you give to young women or anyone else stepping into a field where they’re expected to conform?
AS: There is NEVER a good time. Take the plunge now. Enjoy the rollercoaster of messing up and learning, and just keep putting one foot in front of the other. If not, you’ll regret never chasing your true passions and dreams.
