sandstone cleaning, sealing & maintenance guide PRE-SEALING *When using sandstone around saltwater pools, or in harsh salt water environments such as seaside residences we recommend using Spirit Premium Consolidator. Methods of application include spraying, brushing, microfibre applicator, and dip sealing for complete and total consolidation. Contact Spirit Sealers for more information on stone consolidation.

If Spirit Premium Consolidator is not used in the above environments, we recommend using Spirit Pre Seal as an alternative prior to laying to provide added water resistance, helping to keep salts from building within the stone.

Spirit Pre Seal is excellent for use as a grout release for hard to grout surfaces and pointing on walls.

We recommend at least the face and sides are pre-sealed. For total coverage, the stone can be dip-sealed covering all six sides of the stone with Spirit Pre Seal.

IMPORTANT! Do not stack the drying stone against each other with no air flow, stack them so they can breathe, and remove any excess sealer within 5 minutes. Contact Spirit Sealers if you are unsure about pre-sealing.

INITIAL CLEANING/GROUT HAZE REMOVAL Once the stone has been laid, grouted and washed, a grout residue/haze may be left. It is recommended to wait for 3-4 days for the grout to harden sufficiently before attempting to remove the grout haze in preparation for sealing.

It is advised to keep the area protected during this timeframe if work is still being done by other trades, as they may need to work over or near your freshly laid sandstone.

What you will need – (NT Residual Surface Cleaner, NT All Purpose Cleaner, Spirit Doodlebug, bucket, broom, mop) Spirit Safe Acid can also be used to remove the grout haze.

IMPORTANT! - Test first for acid sensitivity before cleaning any tile or stone with NT Residual Surface Cleaner or Spirit Safe Acid. If the stone shows acid sensitivity, use Spirit HDC to remove the grout haze.

1. Sweep and or vacuum the area to remove any loose debris.

2. In a bucket, dilute 10 parts clean water to 1 part NT Residual Surface Cleaner or Safe Acid and apply to the area that needs cleaning. Use a broom to evenly distribute the solution over the area.

3. Allow the solution to sit for 2-3 mins. If you notice that the solution is drying, add more cleaner to keep it wet. *Only clean in sections that you can handle.

4. Now scrub the area with a Spirit Doodlebug (scouring pad set.) The multi-directional head attaches easily to a broom handle for easy cleaning in hard-to-reach areas.

5. Remove the solution and rinse the area with NT All Purpose Cleaner.

SEALING Once the sandstone is clean and dry, final sealing can begin. It is recommended that a breathable penetrating sealer is used. Test first before use, preferably on a spare piece of stone.

• NT Penetrating Sealer can be used for the final seal. Spirit Premium Seal and Spirit NPS are also suitable for use. *If consolidation was done using Spirit Premium Consolidator, then only Spirit Premium Seal or Spirit NPS can be used for the final seal.

What you will need – (Sealer, Spirit Microfibre Applicator, clean white rags, gloves, respirator and solvent suitable tray (for solvent-based sealer only) 2 coats are required, allowing approximately 1 hour in between coats. Follow the directions on the can or bottle very closely.

Please note: Penetrating sealers will not prevent surface etching or scuffing.

MAINTENANCE The sandstone can be cleaned regularly using NT All Purpose Cleaner. If need be, the stone can be cleaned periodically (every 6-12 months) depending on traffic and wear with Spirit HDC or Spirit Bright As. RE-SEALING Please note: Weather conditions, harsh cleaning methods using high-alkaline, acid or solventbased cleaners will affect the long-term performance of any sealer. Following the appropriate Spirit Guide relating to your substrate will ensure the very best protection. The longevity of your sealer is greatly dependant on the following 4 points: 1. Using a premium quality sealer.

2. Proper application of the sealer. This includes the cleaning process prior to sealing.

Sealing a floor that hasn’t properly dried, sealing when it’s too hot or cold, not mopping up excess sealer and not applying enough sealer are a few of the mistakes made.

3. Where the sealed area is? Is it a high traffic area?

Commercial areas that see more traffic and are cleaned daily will need re-sealing before most domestic areas; however, in domestic situations like, outdoor areas, high-traffic internal areas and shower cubicles, these areas will need to be re-sealed more often. If in doubt, contact Spirit Sealers.

4. How the floor is maintained?

Cleaning regularly with the wrong types of cleaners will break down the sealer prematurely and may even do damage to your sandstone. The cleaners in this guide have been formulated especially for the stone and tile industry.

4. Remove the dirty water with a dense mop. (Using a wet/dry vac is the ideal way) For Glass and Window Cleaning: Add 1 or 2 capfuls of NT All Purpose Cleaner to a spray bottle and top up with water for streak free cleaning!

NT Residual Surface Cleaner is very effective at removing rust, light efflorescence & hard water deposits.

4. Now scrub the surface vigorously with the appropriate grade nylon scouring pad or bristle brush. Use a firm bristle brush for the grout joints 5. Rinse well with NT All Purpose Cleaner at a dilution rate of 10 parts clean water to 1 part NT All Purpose Cleaner to neutralise any residual acid solution.

6. A final rinse with NT All Purpose Cleaner is recommended as a final rinse.

SPIRIT EFFLORESCENCE OFF technical data sheet Product Description: A commercial grade mineral acid cleaner designed to remove stubborn efflorescence. Spirit Efflorescence Off is also very effective at removing rust, grout haze & hard water deposits.

Features + Benefits: • Extra heavy duty acidic cleaner • Highly concentrated, dilutable up to 20:1 • Contains a combination of acids (does NOT contain hydrochloric acid) • Breaks down built up efflorescence & other mineral based materials Where to Use: • Some natural stone surfaces such as granite & sandstone • Terracotta, tessellated tiles, ceramic and porcelain tiles • Concrete & concrete pavers Where NOT to Use: • Acid sensitive stones like travertine, marble or limestone • Depending on where it was quarried, bluestone could be damaged by acids *Test first before use, preferably on a spare piece of stone or tile.

Method of Application: 1. Mix Spirit Efflorescence Off with clean water to the desired strength (see back of bottle for dilution rates) 2. Sweep or vacuum the area to remove any loose debris 3. Dampen the surface with clean water and then apply the solution 4. Allow to sit/dwell for 3-5 minutes keeping the surface wet with the cleaner. Spirit Efflorescence Off can damage the substrate if left to dwell on the surface for too long.

5. Scrub with a nylon scouring pad and use a firm bristle brush for the grout joints.

SPIRIT H.D.C technical data sheet Product Description: A heavy duty, super-alkaline detergent designed to remove build-up of soiling, grease & grime.

Spirit H.D.C is an industrial strength dilutable cleaner with outstanding cleaning properties.

Ideal for tired looking floors, walls and grout joints that have become unsightly over time.

Method of Application: 1. Mix Spirit H.D.C with clean water to the desired strength (see back of bottle for recommended dilution rates) 2. Allow the solution to sit/dwell for 3-5 minutes keeping the surface wet with the cleaner.

3. After 3-5 minutes have passed and allowed the Spirit H.D.C to loosen the grease and grime, begin scrubbing with the appropriate grade nylon scouring pad. Use a firm bristle brush for the grout joints.

4. Remove the dirty water with a dense mop. (Using a wet/dry vacuum is the ideal way).

5. Follow with a rinse of NT All Purpose Cleaner to neutralise any residual alkaline solution.

Please note: Regular cleaning of sealed surfaces with Spirit H.D.C is not recommended as the high-alkaline formula will break down the sealer and affect the performance.

For regular cleaning we recommend NT All Purpose Cleaner.

Method of Application: 1. Mix Spirit Neutral Cleaner with clean water to the desired strength 2. Spread over the area to be cleaned & allow to sit/dwell for 3-5 minutes 3. Agitate/scrub the surface with the appropriate grade nylon scouring pad, use a firm bristle brush for the grout joints.

4. Remove the dirty water with a dense mop. (Using a wet/dry vac is the ideal way) For Glass and Window Cleaning: Add 1 or 2 capfuls of Spirit Neutral Cleaner to a spray bottle and top up with water for streak free cleaning!

SPIRIT PHOSPHORIC ACID CLEANER (Residual Surface Cleaner)

technical data sheet Product Description: A food grade mineral acid cleaner designed to remove grout residue on newly tiled surfaces.

Spirit Phosphoric Acid is very effective at removing rust, light efflorescence & hard water deposits.

Features + Benefits: • Highly concentrated with added detergents • Breaks down grout haze and mortar residue • Made from safe food grade acids • Safer than hydrochloric acid, no harmful fumes Where to Use: • Some natural stone surfaces such as granite, basalt & sandstone • Terracotta, tessellated tiles • Ceramic tiles, porcelain & grout joints • Clay bricks & pavers Method of Application: 1. Mix Spirit Phosphoric Acid cleaner with clean water to the desired strength (follow instructions on the back of the bottle carefully.

2. Wet the area to be cleaned first.

3. Allow to stand for 1-2 minutes keeping the surface wet with the cleaner.

4. Now scrub the surface vigorously with the appropriate grade nylon scouring pad or bristle brush. Use a firm bristle brush for the grout joints 5. Rinse well with NT All Purpose Cleaner at a dilution rate of 10 parts clean water to 1 part NT All Purpose Cleaner to neutralise any residual acid solution.

SPIRIT PORCELAIN CRÈME technical data sheet Product Description: An environmentally friendly crème cleaner that has a non-scratch abrasive additive. Originally designed to remove factory wax from porcelain tiles. Spirit Porcelain Crème is also very effective at removing ground in dirt on hard surfaces.

SAFE ACID technical data sheet Product Description: Spirit Safe Acid is an alternative to mineral acid cleaners, formulated with new organic salt technology. Designed to remove concrete and mortar spills, heavy efflorescence, light and heavy grout haze, & rust stains. It is extremely effective for restoring colour in faded, aged concrete pavers.

Where to Use: • Ceramic Tiles, Porcelain Tiles & grout joints • Concrete & Concrete Pavers • Terracotta, Tessellated Tiles • Non calcium based natural stone (always test before use on natural stone) Where NOT to Use: • Acid sensitive calcium-based stones like travertine, marble or limestone Method of Application: 1. Test first before use to unsure you will not damage the surface you are cleaning.

2. Mix Spirit Safe Acid with clean water to the desired strength (see back of bottle for a guide to dilution rates) 3. Sweep or vacuum the area to remove any loose debris 4. Dampen the surface with clean water and then apply the solution 5. Scrub the affected area with a Spirit Doodlebug or firm bristle brush (Spirit Safe Acid can noticeably etch smooth coloured pavers if left to dwell on the surface for too long) 6. Remove slurry and rinse with NT All Purpose Cleaner to neutralise any residual acidity.

This step is important in preparing the surface for sealing.

SPIRIT SAFE STRIPPER technical data sheet Product Description: A very effective safe-to-use acrylic floor stripper for the removal of acrylic surface/topical sealers like Spirit Uni Seal. It is water soluble with no offensive odours.

Sweep the area to remove any loose debris 2. Apply Spirit Safe Stripper neat from the container to the floor and allow it to sit/dwell for 15-30mins (do not start to scrub yet) 3. After the time has elapsed, check to see if the existing seal has softened (it will now feel tacky) 4. Mix Spirit H.D.C at a dilution rate of 1 part Spirit H.D.C to 8 parts warm water 5. Scrub the floor with a nylon scouring pad to remove the old sealer 6. Remove the slurry and rinse the floor with clean water, then wait for it to dry to see if you have successfully removed all of the sealer.

7. If there is still sealer present, repeat the process until all the old sealer has been removed 8. A final rinse with NT All Purpose Cleaner is recommended.
