Care & Maintenance Guide
Taking care of your new floors is a must, so that their magnificent finish is preserved. By following a few simple care and maintenance guidelines, your floor will continue to be a thing of beauty for years to come.
Cleaning and Care
Wood is a natural product and will adjust to its environment over time. Differential shading or colour variation may occur, especially in areas exposed to direct sunlight or where the flooring is covered (e.g. under rugs).
• Immediately clean up any liquid or water-based spills, or other potentially staining marks, using a dry, clean cloth. While National Tiles Nemora Australis Engineered Timber Flooring is resistant to most spots and stains, some materials or colourants (such as tar, grease, oil, dyes, waxes, ballpoint or marker pens, pet mishaps, or food and beverages containing strong dyes like mustard, curry, cordial, coffee, or tea) may, under certain conditions, migrate into the wear layer and cause indelible stains.
• Daily or as needed – remove loose dirt or grit that could damage the floor by sweeping with a soft, dry broom or vacuuming (preferably using a vacuum with an effective dust filter and a hard-floor suction nozzle, with the power head turned off, if installed).
• Weekly – clean using a premixed cleaner such as Bona Stone, Tile & Laminate Cleaner and a microfibre mop. Alternatively, mop the floor with a well-wrung damp mop (the floor should dry within 15 seconds) and a non-abrasive, soap-free cleaner suitable for timber floors to remove footprints, dirt, stains, or marks.
• As required – stubborn scuffs and stains can be easily removed using a damp cloth or sponge with a diluted solution of methylated spirits (testing first on a left over piece or non visible area (such as a cupboard)). Ensure all residue is thoroughly rinsed from the floor.
When Cleaning the Floor
• Never use abrasive cleaners, nylon scouring pads, steel wool, scouring powder, or bleach as they may damage the floor.
• Never use oil, soap, wax, or polishes, as these finishes can make the floor slippery and leave a dull finish.
• Never use a steam mop or steam cleaner.
Protect Your Floor
Follow these simple steps to achieve many years of enjoyment from your National Tiles Nemora Australis Engineered Timber:
• Place entrance mats (it is recommended to avoid mats with rubber backing) at all exterior doorways and entrances to trap dirt, sand, grit, moisture, and other substances from shoes. Double mats—a coarse exterior mat and a medium interior mat—are recommended for residential installations, while triple commercial mats with a minimum walk-off zone of 3.5 metres are recommended for commercial installations. Clean mats regularly.
• Use non-staining felt protectors under heavy pieces of furniture. Fit office chairs, filing trolleys, mobile containers, and furniture with soft treads or castors. Chair pads should be used under desk chairs with castors.
• Heavy objects and furniture (200kg or greater), such as large bookcases, full-sized billiard tables, or kitchen units, should not be placed on any floating installation. This can prevent the floor from properly responding to contraction and expansion, which may cause squeaking, gapping, and possible failure.
• Never drag, slide, or roll furniture or appliances across your floor. Protect the surface when using a trolley to move heavy objects.
• Spiked heels or shoes in need of repair can severely damage your floor. In areas of excessive traffic and wear, use runners or area rugs. Rugs should be cleaned regularly.
• Pet claws can scratch your floor. Keep nails trimmed.
• Floor-to-ceiling windows, combined with the harsh Australian sun, can create floor temperatures exceeding 70ºC. Protect your floor from extreme temperatures and strong, direct sunlight by using interior temperature and humidity control (recommended temperatures: 10–30ºC and relative humidity between 30% and 65%), window tinting, awnings, and/or curtains or blinds. Dramatic temperature changes and/or extreme humidity can cause joints to lip or gap and may result in surface checking. Prolonged direct sunlight will cause fading. These conditions are beyond our ability to control such that if these conditions are not maintained, National Tiles warranties may be voided.
Common Characteristics of Timber Floors
• As a natural product, timber floors will oxidise during the first few months due to UV light exposure, typically resulting in a darker, richer appearance. Consequently, timber floors may show some colour variation between exposed areas and areas covered by rugs or furniture. Protect your floor from prolonged direct sunlight with curtains, blinds, shades, or awnings, and move rugs and furniture periodically to expose all areas evenly.
• Timber flooring products can display discolouration caused by contact with rubber items such as rug or mat backings, furniture feet, rubber-soled shoes or slippers, and wheels from trolleys and wheelchairs, which are likely to leave permanent marks. Only non-staining vinyl-backed mats or woven rugs identified as colourfast should be used on timber floors. If the floor will be subjected to any of these conditions, darker colours are recommended to help hide any discolouration, should it occur.
• The appearance of minor nicks and scratches can be reduced using repair accessories such as colour-matched filler sticks. Products like Tibetan Almond Stick or Gilly’s Scratch Cover oil will effectively cover or disguise most minor scratches and blemishes.
• While the factory finish of National Tiles Nemora Australis Engineered Timber Flooring may be refinished, doing so will void the Finish/Abrasive Wear Warranty. If your lacquer-finished timber floor starts to show dull spots or signs of wear, periodic maintenance can be considered. This typically involves a thorough clean and the application of a topical water-based polyurethane maintenance coating, such as Bona Timber Refresher (always following the manufacturer’s instructions). This usually addresses most light scratches and dullness issues and reduces the need for a full refurbishment. When refurbishment (sanding and recoating) is required, it is essential to engage a professional flooring contractor before commencing any work.
• Timber flooring is a living product that constantly moves and changes—this is the inherent beauty of timber. It will expand and contract in response to your internal environment. As such, it cannot be completely sealed. Maintaining a stable environment, as outlined in the installation and care and maintenance guides, is key to longer-lasting, high-performing floors.
