Make, Do and Mend

There are still a lot of people who believe that women aren’t as good as men and there are still a lot of people who believe that women are the homemakers and men are the providers.

The women who paved the way deserve recognition. We can be more than just child-bearers. We can go out and work.

Working patterns of women have changed enormously.

Young women have a voice.

When I was married it was expected that I would give up my job.

I was a nurse. I got a senior rank and it caused friction in my marriage.

I wanted to do my own thing.

I’m an intelligent woman, why wouldn’t I use my skills?

Men are now more comfortable with women earning more.

It can be a burden. Women take work home. There is always the threat of being replaced.

Getting on the job ladder is difficult. I find it sad for young ones. Where are they meant to get experience?

There should be more women in positions of power.

It would be good if there were more men doing childcare and I think I’d like for that to happen. I would like to see a man working with my own child and it would probably be reassuring that there is a man in my little girl’s life.

If the responsibility for childcare was shared it would be good for men.

They would get to spend more time with their children.

Currently, I have sole responsibility for making arrangements if my ex-partner’s plans change at the last minute.

You’re going to have to work for it, to be independent and be able to support yourself with no need to rely on others.

I’d rather trust myself with what I earn than somebody else.

A lot of men want equality on earth as much as women.

I have met some men I would consider to be champions of women’s rights.

Compared to my mother’s generation I appear to have more opportunities or choices, but these are restricted by childcare responsibilities etc.

I don’t know if things are fair but I don’t know if there’s a need to change it, because if it was bothering anyone it would be on the news all the time?

When I look at what my daughters do – looking after children, trying to keep a job. In many ways I think I had it easier being at home with them.

The government now decide what you should do. Told by the Prime Minister how to bring up our children. They don’t know your individual circumstances.

It is important to be open. Our generation conquered that.

It makes me feel reassured that we can talk openly. My daughter got pregnant at sixteen and didn’t know how to tell me. I said, “I’m disappointed, but I won’t stop loving you”.
