REWIND PERSPECTIVE A few days ago, I was talking with one of the young creators involved in Futureproof. She said she couldn’t understand why there is only one year dedicated to young people, that in fact every year should be a celebration of the lives, thoughts, ideas and contributions of this group. I couldn’t have said it better myself, it needs no explanation.

Futureproof is a festival that seeks to place the authority, experience, concerns and motivations of young people in Scotland at the forefront.

By placing these young people in creative conversation with some of the world’s most innovative artists and companies we have the alchemy to create rebellion and possibly in a localised way, change the world.

When I first became the artistic director of an arts organisation, I was 28 years old – just a few years older than the young people involved in Futureproof. As a young woman, I felt that I had to work harder to claim the territory in a way that perhaps an older person wouldn’t have had to do.

When I was starting out, I wish someone had told me that it’s okay to be yourself. You don’t have to try to be a different, more obvious version of what an artist or a leader is supposed to be. I spent a lot of time going: ‘Am I entitled to be a director of an organisation when I am 28?” If I could go back, I would tell myself: “Yes, you are: you are the right person to be doing this.”

Now, as Artistic Director of the National Theatre of Scotland, my ambition is to make theatre for everyone – to demystify the artistic process so people realise that anyone can be involved, and to put young people at the helm as we shape our future.

I want to thank our Year of Young People Project Team and the incredibly talented young people from across the country who have made Futureproof happen. You are the National Theatre of Scotland, and I am immensely proud to collaborate with you. I can’t wait to see what you do next.
