From the President & CEO Please don't miss the opportunity to explore the beautiful campus of the National Sporting Library & Museum (NSLM) this summer, most importantly our newest additions!

We recently opened to great fanfare an exhibition on the monumental equestrian sculptures of Nic Fiddian Green in partnership with Sladmore Gallery of London. Fiddian Green’s horse head sculpture, Still Water (2011), is an icon of our collection, greeting visitors in the entrance of our Museum. The exhibition, entitled Nic Fiddian Green: Spiritus Equus, is the artist’s first ever retrospective, and celebrates his vision with 27 works on view across our campus, including five monumental works outside. The exhibition will be here through September and is a must-see! Thanks to a generous gift from an anonymous donor, we have begun an acquisition fund to purchase one of these stunning outdoor sculptures, Into the Wind (at the entrance of the Library), and make the NSLM the sculpture’s permanent home. Many visitors have been inspired to contribute with the QR code on campus, and we invite you to join us in making a gift towards this exciting acquisition with the enclosed envelope.

We are thrilled that progress is well underway on the renovation of what was known as “The Chronicle of the Horse building” into our new Arts Center. The reimagined building will be a center for art and community: housing our growing world-class collections, as well as providing additional—and muchneeded—galleries and gathering space. We have now launched a major campaign to help raise funds for the $3.5-million project which is scheduled to be completed by mid-2027. Thanks to a number of generous donors, we have already raised $1.75-million. We have also received a $500,000 match gift from two anonymous donors, meaning that all gifts to The Arts Center have double the impact! We hope you will please consider a gift to this important project for our community and collections.

In conjunction with national celebrations for the 250th anniversary of America, the Museum will feature a focus gallery, America 250: Sports at the Founding, highlighting popular country sports of early Americans.

Artwork from the collection contextualizes the historical narrative of racing, foxhunting, and angling, among other pursuits. A complementary exhibit in the Library’s Forrest E. Mars, Sr. Exhibit Hall will explore the activities and interests of the Revolutionary (1765–83) generation in equestrian and field pursuits and the natural world, with a focus on luminaries and founding fathers like George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.

Our blockbuster programs continue to sell out, with many having significant waiting lists, like the recent popular program: Horse Brain, Human Brain with author Janet L. Jones, PhD. In June, we hosted Linda Jane Holden, author of The Gardens of Bunny Mellon. Holden’s book celebrates the life and work of renowned garden designer Rachel "Bunny" Mellon. In September, New York Times bestselling author and renowned conservationist Douglas Tallamay will speak about his newest book: How Can I Help? Tallamy reveals how small, intentional choices made by everyday gardeners and homeowners can have a profound ripple effect on local ecosystems. In October, former NSLM John H. Daniels Fellowship recipient and #1 New York Times bestselling author, Elizabeth Letts, will share her newest novel, Fallen for France. Spanning Morocco and France in the shadow of World War I, the book follows unforgettable characters whose lives are bound by a magnificent horse.

Our popular free Open Late Concerts will return this summer with three dates: June 26 (Silver Tones Swing Band), July 31 (Krystal King), and August 7 (Martin and Kelly). Martin and Kelly have opened for super stars like Bonnie Raitt, Alabama, Lyle Lovett, and Willie Nelson, and are performing at the NSLM thanks to the generosity of Mrs. Jacqueline B. Mars. Bring your chairs or blanket and enjoy a concert on the NSLM lawn!

Pursuits of Independence and

the

Natural World June 4–December 6, 2026 Forrest E. Mars, Sr. Exhibit Hall

A

new exhibition in the Library’s Forrest E. Mars, Sr. Exhibit Hall, Pursuits of Independence and the Natural World, explores the ways Americans of the Revolutionary era understood and interacted with nature, and how those connections defined the new nation. Land and wildlife—and the products derived from them— drove European settlement of North America. These factors shaped the economic and social development of these settler societies, their interactions with Native American populations, and the geopolitical significance of America in the wider world.

From the beginning of European settlement, Americans engaged in commercial fishing, trapping, and hunting. Although not done for sport, these activities required knowledge and skills similar to game hunting.

This work also involved the use of dogs for herding and protection and horses for herding and hauling. Horses were also vital for transportation and in war. These experiences informed American sporting activities, and by the 18th century, many in the continent’s upper classes engaged in horseracing, foxhunting, wingshooting, and angling.

The art and objects in Pursuits of Independence and the Natural World explore these connections by focusing on two luminaries of America’s Revolutionary generation, George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, and their interactions with animals and nature. Washington was known to friends and family as an avid sportsman, and to most contemporaries as an accomplished equestrian.

Thomas Jefferson was not a sportsman, but his knowledge about, and interest in, nature and animals are well known. Both men owned large plantations where livestock, including horses, cattle, sheep, and pigs, were raised.

The centerpiece of the exhibition is a plaster maquette created c. 1954 by animal artist Herbert Haseltine for his monumental bronze George Washington on Horseback, which is located on the grounds of the National Cathedral in Washington, DC. The maquette is on loan to the NSLM from the private collection of Kirk Hoefling.

On the walls behind and beside the maquette in the Forrest E. Mars, Sr. Exhibit Hall are two immersivescale reproductions. Edward Savage’s East Front of Mount Vernon (c. 1792) emphasizes the mansion’s natural surroundings, and Charles Tholey’s 1868 Washington and Friends After a Day’s Hunt offers a jaunty interpretation of spending time afield with the

father of the country. Items on loan from Rachel "Bunny" Mellon's Oak Spring Garden Foundation, including a lithograph of Junius Brutus Stearns’ Life of Washington, The Farmer (1853), add rich details about a life engaged in outdoor pursuits.

which can be seen on loan from the Oak Spring Garden Foundation. Buffon was unmoved even by the words of Thomas Jefferson, who eventually secured and presented the carcass of a moose to Buffon to prove his point.

The Thomas Jefferson section in the exhibit features his efforts to convince GeorgeLouis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon, a leading 18th-century natural historian, to recant his theory of North American "degeneracy," which asserted that the continent's cooler temperatures and higher humidity made its animals smaller and weaker than those found in other parts of the world. Buffon promulgated this theory in his hugely popular and richly illustrated Histoire Naturalle, Generale et Particuliere (Natural History: General and Particular). Twenty hand-colored volumes from the Library’s own recently acquired 53-volume, 1785–91 edition of the publication, demonstrate Jefferson’s challenge. The Declaration of Independence author laid out his counterargument in his Notes on the State of Virginia—a 1787 edition of

GEORGE WASHINGTON and a NAT I O N of FA R M E RS JUNE 27, 2026–JANUARY 10, 2027

T

his panel exhibit explores the visionary work of Washington as the nation’s first farmer, and the centrality of his farming innovations to the creation of a new American nation. The exhibit was developed by the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association in partnership with the Oak Spring Garden Foundation for the American Semiquincentennial. In it, curator Dr. Bruce Ragsdale, author of George Washington at the Plow, tells the compelling tale of Washington's creative leadership in agrarian management.

The panels include text and stunning color illustrations, both historic and modern, which shed light on this lesser-known but important aspect of Washington’s contributions to the creation of a new nation.

America 250:

Sports at the Founding

The new Museum focus gallery, America 250: Sports at the Founding, celebrates the nation’s 250th anniversary with a selection of original English artworks and early prints from the NSLM’s collections. Created within the first decades of our nation’s founding, they exemplify what early Americans would have collected and displayed on their walls.

Highlights include Cockfighting Scenes, a set of four watercolors by Henry Thomas Alken; a set of four hand-colored foxhunting aquatints, also

by Alken; a whimsical pair of 1786 aquatints by William Mason depicting a cast of characters at a country horse race; a c. 1790 jockey scale; as well as a pair of angling etchings and a Wild Duck Shooting scene by Samuel Howitt.

In a time when American art and printmaking were in their infancy, imported engravings and aquatints by refined English printmakers reproduced from works by English sporting artists and illustrators were particularly accessible to a burgeoning 18th-century American middle class.

The prints created a rich visual lexicon that spoke to their sporting interests. Both in England and the new nation, gentlemanly activities included foxhunting, wingshooting, angling, and cock fighting—much of which in the US had its roots in English practice brought over by the colonists.

Additionally, by 1776, imported English racehorses and broodmares had laid the foundation for horse racing as an American pastime with racetracks from New York to South Carolina.

The gallery sets the tone with a vibrant backdrop of red, white, and blue walls inviting visitors to contemplate the works on view juxtaposed against a large reproduction of a mid-19th-century illustration by F.O.C. Darley romanticizing George Washington as a vigorous outdoorsman with his iconic American foxhounds. On view through January 10, 2027, America 250: Sports at the Founding complements the Library’s Pursuits of Independence and the Natural World exhibition which features Washington and Thomas Jefferson.

e are excited to announce that we have begun the revitalization and renovation of what was formerly known as “The Chronicle of the Horse building” into "The Arts Center." The project marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter in the National Sporting Library & Museum’s story.

The reimagined building will be a center for art and community, housing our growing world-class collections, as well as providing additional—and much-needed—galleries and gathering space. We will preserve the iconic exterior of the building, keeping the integrity of the structure, all while reimagining the interior for the future. The Arts Center will be a space for the community to enjoy—complete with meeting rooms, open art storage, and outdoor sculpture gardens. William Fox-Pitt: The Course of His Career March 9 The NSLM had the distinct pleasure of welcoming three-day eventing legend William Fox-Pitt for an unforgettable evening of stories, advice, laughter, and love for equestrian sport. From six Burghley titles to five Olympic Games and 14 five-star victories, Fox-Pitt captivated the audience with tales of triumph, grit, and the journey behind the dreams. Thank you, William, we will forever cherish your incredible warmth and sage words! This program was generously underwritten by NSLM Member Jim Newman.

Blue Ridge Wildlife: Wildlife Research and Its Role in Equine Health March 19 We enjoyed an eye-opening evening exploring the vital connections between wildlife and equine health with veterinarians Jen Riley, DVM, and Christine Adams, DVM. Our special guest and live animal ambassador, Mocha the skunk, was the most popular. Thank you to our partners at Blue Ridge Wildlife Center, especially Trish Carter, for helping bring this important and engaging program to life!

The Changing Arctic with Halla Hrund Logadóttir March 24 We were honored to host Halla Hrund Logadóttir, who currently serves as a member of the Icelandic parliament. She imparted thought-provoking insight into the Arctic’s rapidly changing environment, the future of energy, and innovation shaping the region. With experience spanning the United Nations, World Economic Forum, and Harvard, Logadóttir's talk offered a powerful look at how interconnected our world truly is and what lies ahead.

American Rivers with Tom Kiernan April 15 The leadership and conservation experts from American Rivers spoke to an enthusiastic, standing room only audience. They have been the nation's leading voice for rivers for more than 50 years, working to make all rivers clean and healthy for the people and wildlife who depend on them.

This presentation was led by Tom Kiernan, President & CEO; Adam Schellhammer, Mid-Atlantic Regional Director; and Pat Calvert, Virginia Director of Conservation.

Rewilding Argentina with Sebastián Di Martino April 23 Thanks to The Sacharuna Foundation, the NSLM had the opportunity to hear from top biologist and the conservation director of Rewilding Argentina Foundation, Sebastián Di Martino. Di Martino discussed the positive story of expansive landscape conservation and reintroduction of vanished species—the jaguar, the giant river otter, the giant anteater, and many more—along the river corridor from Brazil to Bolivia.

History. Challenges. Hope. Protecting Public Lands: The Wilderness Society (Members-Only) April 28 We were thrilled to host a special, Members-only gathering in partnership with The Wilderness Society. Guests enjoyed a cocktail reception followed by an engaging discussion with Tracy Stone-Manning, President of The Wilderness Society, and acclaimed environmental historian Bill Cronon. It was a unique opportunity to hear from two influential voices who are shaping how we understand and protect the natural world!

Horse Brain, Human Brain: The Neuroscience of Horsemanship by Janet L. Jones, PhD May 28 Janet L. Jones, PhD, author of the groundbreaking book Horse Brain, Human Brain: The Neuroscience of Horsemanship, captivated a standing-room-only audience. Drawing on decades of research in neuroscience and a lifetime of experience with horses, Dr. Jones achieved what few have dared: she looked inside the minds of both species to reveal what is really going on when horse and human move as one. Her discussion focused on brain-to-brain communication. This is a remarkable and rare experience in life that horsemen and scientists alike have ignored until now.

The Gardens of Bunny Mellon by Linda Jane Holden June 11 Everyone enjoyed an evening with the compelling Linda Jane Holden, author of The Gardens of Bunny Mellon. Holden’s book celebrates the life and work of renowned garden designer Rachel "Bunny" Mellon, featuring her iconic home gardens for friends like President Kennedy (the White House Rose Garden) and Hubert de Givenchy. Her book combines biography, social history, and garden design. To showcase Bunny's innate and highly influential talent, Holden incorporated photographs by Roger Foley, archival images, and Mellon's own sketches and plans.

UPCOMING PROGRAMS & EVENTS SPOTLIGHT The Art of Equine Oil Painting with Gail Guirreri-Maslyk July 15–16 | 10 am–4 pm (break for lunch, food not provided) | Library Join acclaimed local artist Gail Guirreri-Maslyk for an intensive two-day oil painting workshop that celebrates expression over perfection. In this immersive experience, Guirreri-Maslyk will guide participants through the journey of painting horses with a limited palette—encouraging spontaneity, exploration, and a deeper connection to your creative voice. Explore fast, innovative techniques that encourage loose brush strokes. You will learn to recognize when a piece is finished, when to push further, or when to start fresh. Working with a limited palette, uncover surprising color harmonies and new ways to capture form and movement.

Recent Acquisitions

E

arlier this year, the Library acquired a complete set of Histoire Naturalle, Generale et Particuliere (Natural History: General and Particular), authored by Frenchman George-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon (1707–1788).

First published starting in 1748, the Library’s 53-volume edition began its print run in 1785 and was completed in 1791. It includes nearly 300 handcolored illustrations of birds and quadrupeds. Buffon, a mathematician by education, became known as one of Europe’s most respected natural historians, primarily because of the popularity of the engagingly written Histoire Naturalle, which was translated into more than a dozen languages.

The first volumes of the series advance Buffon’s theory of North American “degeneracy,” which argued that the Americas' colder and more humid climate made animals there smaller, weaker, and shorter-lived than in other parts of the world. This claim touched off a debate with Thomas Jefferson that is a focus of the Library exhibition Pursuits of Independence and the Natural World.
