Great Expectations at Great Meadow
Cheers! Welcome to the 2016 NSLM Polo Classic. This is the day, weather gods favoring us, Great Expectations at Great Meadow will be fulfilled. This is the first year the Classic will be played at the Sheila C. Johnson Polo Field at Great Meadow, a simply splendid venue -- the first time there has been space for General Admission, a gracious “Paddock” hospitality suite amongst the tailgaters, salons on either end of the Founders Pavilion, a rally of the iconic famed “Prancing Horse” Ferraris, and the addition of a second match, The Founders Cup preceding The Mars Cup. On the field, we shall remember the tragedy of 9/11, now 15 years past, with a presentation of colors by a mounted honor guard from the Arlington Caisson Platoon, led by the St. Andrews Society of Pipes & Drums. Between matches, the Orange County Hounds will grace the field. Play will be headlined by Nacho Figueras, John Walsh, and John Gobin, along with Major Mark Cann leading the British Military Team and other players of comparable skill and global acclaim. Renowned poster artist of Saratoga Springs Races and the Travers Stakes, Greg Montgomery, has created a charming inaugural poster specially for the occasion. Everyone who participates today, from a General Admission guest to our Event Sponsor, Salamander Resorts & Hotels, can claim success. There are many new corporate sponsors and Founders Pavilion table sponsors, joining steadfast legacy sponsors and friends, who have opened their hearts and contributed their resources. There will be magnificent play on the field, refreshment, and camaraderie enjoyed no matter where you are along the boards. But please know the fruits of everyone’s generosity will reach throughout the succeeding year. Proceeds will help support NSLM in its important Mission - preserving, promoting, and sharing the literature, art, and culture of equestrian, angling, and field sports - and extending its wonderful outreach to our communities, whether local or international. Savor the day, and remember to join us in 2017! Very truly yours, Juliana E. May, Chair

Commemorative Poster Artist GREG MONTGOMERY
Sporting artist Greg Montgomery created the 6th Annual Polo Classic commemorative poster featuring original artwork titled Wine & Roses (see right). “We experimented with different viewing angles, different tents, different spectators and eventually even different table flowers. In the end, we managed to represent the National Sporting Library & Museum’s 6th Annual Polo Classic poster in splendid summer whites and regal purples.” Montgomery is no newcomer to creating poster artwork. He is known for the long running annual poster series he began creating for the Travers Stakes in Saratoga in 1986. He applies his bold and colorful graphic style to the wide range of scenery one might encounter at an equestrian event, whether a polo match or a horse race. He received his formal art training at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, NM, where he studied painting and lithography, and at the College of St. Rose in Albany, NY, where he studied serigraphy. Greg Montgomery’s Wine & Roses artwork is featured on the commemorative poster for the NSLM’s 2016 Polo Classic benefit. 33 x 17-inch open edition printed on McCoy 80 lb. dull cover paper. Polo Rules & Terms Polo is played between teams of four players on a field measuring 300 yards by 160 yards. As in most sports, each team endeavors to score goals and prevent goals for the opposing team. Polo is played on horseback, and players score by using a mallet to drive the ball into the opponent’s goal, marked by two ten-foot high posts situated eight yards apart. After a goal, teams change sides of the field.
Handicap A handicap is a rating given annually to a player to indicate his skill level relative to another player. Handicaps range from -2 to 10 (the best), and it is common to refer to a player’s handicap in terms of “goals.” For example, you may hear someone refer to a player by saying, “He is three goals,” which means he has a handicap of three.
In a match, players are numbered One through Four, a number corresponding to the player’s role on the field.
Hook A player may use his mallet to block or interfere with an opponent’s swing, but only if he is on the side where the swing is being made or directly in front of or behind the opponent. If the player reaches over, under, or across the opponent’s horse, it is called a “cross hook,” which is a foul.
One This player’s main duty is to score goals and neutralize the number Four player on the opposing team. This position is often played by the player with the lowest handicap. Two This player also can score but will often bear more defensive capabilities than the number One player. Three This player must be flexible, scoring goals and providing defense for the team. The number Three player is often the team’s best player. Four This player is responsible for defending against scoring attempts by the opposing team.
Penalty When one team commits a foul, the opposing team is awarded a free hit toward the goal. The severity of the foul will determine the type of penalty shot that is awarded. Most penalties are taken from the halfway line, 60 yards from the goal, 40 yards from the goal, or 30 yards from the goal. Pony Goal This is a goal scored by a horse kicking the ball through the goal posts.
The rules of polo are devised for the safety of the ponies and their riders. The most prominent rule is the “line of the ball.” As the ball is struck, the line of travel creates a “right of way” for the player who struck the ball. Other players are restricted in their approach along this line.
Safety Also known as a Penalty 6, a safety is a foul that occurs when a defending player hits the ball across his own backline. The other team is awarded a free shot 60 yards out.
Appealing For a Foul When a player tries to influence an umpire’s call, usually by raising the mallet up in the air or by swinging it in a windmill fashion.
Sideboards These optional boards, which cannot exceed 11 inches in height, extend the length of the field to mark the sidelines. A player may cross out of bounds to make a play so long as the ball remains in bounds. But when the ball goes over the sideboards, it is out of bounds and play stops. Then, the two teams will line up at the point where the ball left the field of play and the umpire will throw the ball in between them.
Bump A bump, also called a ride-off, is when one player rides into another player in an attempt to gain or keep possession of the ball. If done improperly, this maneuver can be dangerous for horses and riders. Chukker A polo match typically lasts 1.5 hours and each game is divided into seven-minute periods referred to as chukkers. In outdoor polo, a regulation chukker is usually seven minutes long but can be as long as seven minutes 30 seconds, with a warning horn that sounds at the seven-minute mark. Half-time lasts fifteen minutes. Chukkers are kept short for the sake of the polo ponies, which receive a rigorous workout during the match. In modern polo, players normally change horses as frequently as possible during a chukker, such as during a penalty or even after a goal. This provides the horses with rest that can prevent injury, but the game is not stopped for a midchukker horse change.
Throw-In A throw-in, also known as a “bowl in,” is when the umpire throws in the ball at the start of the game, at the beginning of each chukker, and every time a goal is scored. Time-out An umpire calls a time-out when there has been a foul or an accident, or at his discretion. A player also may call time-out if he is injured or he has broken a piece of tack. Time-out is not allowed for changing ponies or for replacing a broken mallet, although a player may do so at any time. Umpire In a polo match there are two mounted officials – one on each side of the field – known as umpires who enforce the rules of the game. It is customary to have a third official standing on the sidelines, who can be the deciding call when the umpires don’t agree.
Goal The object of the game is to score points by moving a ball down the field and hitting it through the goal posts. Any time this happens, it is a goal – even if it was the pony that knocked it across the goal line. After a goal is scored, teams switch sides. 12

ANCIENT GREEK ART Organized by the National Sporting Library & Museum and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts National Sporting Library & Museum September 9, 2017 – January 15, 2018 Virginia Museum of Fine Arts February 17 – July 8, 2018
HIPPOMANIA (MAD FOR HORSES)
From myth and legend, to warfare and transportation, to leisure, sport and Olympic competition, the horse played an integral role in ancient Greek culture. As symbols of wealth, power, and status, horses appear on the finest examples of ancient art and pottery. Images of chariot horses being harnessed, jockeys riding, and grooms tending to well-bred steeds show the details of sporting events and ancient horsemanship. Vase-paintings depicting the care, training, and competition of the ancient sport horse and ancient texts on the Greek art of horsemanship bear striking resemblances to the horsemanship of today. The Horse in Ancient Greek Art exhibition will feature Greek vases and sculpture from the 8th through the 4th centuries BCE drawn from a private collection, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, and other museum collections. The exhibition and accompanying publication will explore the significance of the horse in ancient Greek culture, the superb horsemanship skills of the ancient Greeks, and imagery of the horse in ancient myth, war, sport, and competition. From some of the earliest examples of the horse in Greek art, to stunning examples of black and red-figured vases, the objects on view will illustrate ancient equestrian life.
