WELCOME BACK, SPRING AUTOJUMBLE! The wait is nearly over, with the greatly-anticipated event returning to the Beaulieu parkland on 14th and 15th May 2022.

After a two-year absence, Spring Autojumble is once again taking its rightful place in Beaulieu’s packed events calendar. Following in the tyre tracks of International Autojumble, which successfully returned in 2021, the show will combine colourful car displays and hundreds of bargain-filled stands, for a busy motoring-themed weekend.

As part of the event’s triumphant return, impressive car club displays will be amongst the show highlights. Rare examples of the lilacpainted Morris Minor Million will be on show in Moggyfest, a packed display of Morris Minors

and contemporary classics brought together by the Dorset branch of the Morris Minor Owners’ Club. The limited edition Million, which reached its 60th birthday last year, will be celebrated with this crowd-pleasing display.

A display from the Saab Enthusiasts Club will feature a line-up of 60 Saabs of all ages in honour of all Saabs imported into the UK from 1960 until 2012. While the Austin A30 & A35 Owners’ Club will be displaying a fine collection of Austin A30s and A35s, with these charming ‘baby Austins’ reminiscent of a different era of British motoring.

Fans of the nation’s favourite 4X4 won’t want to miss Land Rover Rummage. Taking place on Sunday 15th May, this trading corner of Spring Autojumble is dedicated to Land Rover spare parts, all gathered in one convenient area. Look out for mechanical spares, body panels, wheels, service items, accessories, and perhaps even complete project vehicles.

INTERNATIONAL AUTOJUMBLE 2021 Last September saw over 25,000 showgoers attend International Autojumble, despite the impact of Brexit and Covid restrictions on international visitors. Following its postponement in 2020, the show’s return was welcomed by traders and bargain hunters alike, who were delighted to be back on the Beaulieu event fields to trade elusive spares for their automotive projects.

The line-up of cars for sale in Automart was impressive. An Austin Mini Countryman which had covered just 16,000 miles from new and had spent 43 years stored in a barn, sold quickly on the Saturday. Very different was a rare 1959 Ginetta G2, a minimalist sports car built using Ford Prefect running gear. A range of high-quality classics was also up for grabs in Dealermart.

NIFTY FIFTIES AND FORGOTTEN FAVOURITES International Autojumble is the place to see fascinating displays of historic vehicles. A brand new display for 2022’s show, Nifty Fifties will be following in the tyre-tracks of last year’s Forgotten Favourites.

Classic vehicles dating from 1950 to 1959 are invited to take their places in the display, which will celebrate a golden era of car manufacturing across the world.

All 1950s motors are welcome to join Nifty Fifties, from iconic British Jaguars and MGs, and colourful American classics such as Chevrolets and Cadillacs, to European favourites such as Porsches, Citroens and even eye-catching bubble cars.

After a few event rearrangements over the past two years, I am very pleased that we are starting 2022 with a full events calendar, and of course with the long-awaited return of Spring Autojumble.

Fortunately, all of our Simply rallies were able to take place last year, thanks to some being rescheduled and capping attendee numbers for others. As a result, we had a great year for Simply rallies, which saw many motoring enthusiasts bringing their much-loved vehicles to Beaulieu. As we start a new season without any such restrictions, we’re all looking forward to another great year.

Favourites brought together a selection of ordinary everyday cars of the past which today are rarely seen.

While some classics have been preserved in large numbers, the line-up paid tribute to cars from 19601990 which have almost disappeared from the roads.

From a 1980s Volvo 480ES, Citroen CX and Opel Astra, to a 1970s Austin Maxi, Citroen Dyane and Australian-built Leyland P76, to a 1960s Triumph 1300 and a low-mileage Austin 1100, there was plenty to appeal to the nostalgic side of showgoers.

Joining Forgotten Favourites was a line-up of concours cars from Hagerty’s Festival of the Unexceptional. “I can’t remember the last time I saw one of those!” was often heard as showgoers took a closer look at the Nissan Bluebird, Renault 10, Volvo 340, Daewoo Espero and Nissan Micra on show.

The Beaulieu parkland has been a wonderful setting for our events for over half a century, and we are very lucky to call it home to our Autojumbles. Looking after this landscape must be a key consideration, so following tree studies which have been conducted, particular trees have been identified which would benefit from minimised activity under their canopies, to avoid compacting their roots.

NATIONAL MOTOR MUSEUM CELEBRATES GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY In celebration of the landmark golden half-century of the National Motor Museum, an anniversary exhibition telling The Story of Motoring in 50 Objects will be launched at Beaulieu on 3rd July.

The considered selection will be made from a wealth of more than 1.7 million items from the internationally-acclaimed collection cared for by the National Motor Museum Trust.

Curators have so far whittled the choice down to a shortlist of 150, and the final 50 objects will include the most historically important vehicles, motoring artefacts, film footage, images, documents and books from its archives.

National Motor Museum Trust Chief Executive Jon Murden said: “The history of motoring has had many twists and turns, but the mobility it provides has been central to our lives for over a century. Our final selection of 50 objects will tell this vitally important story in all its diversity.

“From illustrating motoring’s technology and progress, its achievement and endeavour, to transforming leisure activities and inspiring art, our final

selection will be an exciting and important one to make.”

The National Motor Museum is an Accredited Museum and all of its collections have been designated by Arts Council England as being of national and international importance.

Inspiration for the museum came from motoring pioneer and transport visionary John 2nd Baron Montagu. His son Edward, Lord Montagu first displayed five cars in the entrance hall of Palace Hall as a tribute to his father, before opening the museum on 4th July 1972. Together, their legacy resulted in the foundation of the first permanent national motor museum in the world.

Fifty years on – to celebrate the golden anniversary and opening of The Story of Motoring in 50 Objects – owners are being invited to join a special display of vehicles from the 1970s at Beaulieu on 3rd July.

ALL GO FOR GUGGENHEIM The 1914 Rolls-Royce 40/50 Alpine Eagle and 1924 Bugatti Type 35 have left the National Motor Museum for the summer, to join a brand new exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao.

Curated by renowned British architect Lord Foster, Motion. Autos, Art, Architecture will explore the relevance of the automobile to the history of art and design, by showcasing a selection of 38 iconic vehicles.

Also featured will be paintings and sculptures, models and sketchbooks, photographs and audiovisuals, by some of the century’s most influential designers.

From record-breaking racing cars to crash test dummies, Edwardian motoring costumes to Mod parkas, Shell postcards to road signs, factory footage to motoring inventions... all are in the melting pot for the final selection. Visitors will be able to use the Smartify app to scan the objects in the exhibition and uncover additional content and stories from the museum’s collections.

National Motor Museum Senior Engineer Ian Stanfield accompanied the Rolls-Royce and Bugatti to Spain, working with the Guggenheim team to carefully unload the cars, before overseeing their positioning within the exhibition.

BEAULIEU UNVEILS NEW BOND EXHIBITION FOR NO TIME TO DIE Cars, gadgets and costumes from latest Bond film go on show.

Lord Montagu made a Bond-style entrance by driving into the National Motor Museum in an Aston Martin DB5, dressed in a black tie and dinner suit, to launch Beaulieu’s latest exhibition, Bond in Motion – No Time To Die. Filmmakers, guests and visitors had a glimpse of Bond’s iconic silver birch Aston Martin DB5, as Lord Montagu and No Time To Die Special Effects Supervisor, Oscar-winning Chris Corbould, pulled back its cover. Together, they unveiled the display of the iconic cars, gadgets and costumes from the film.

Concept artist Tim Browning also stood beneath the submersible glider he designed for the movie. The glider, named ‘Stealthy Bird’ by Q, now perches in its new home overlooking the exhibition.

MOTORING IN MINIATURE GOES ON TOUR Making way for Bond in Motion – No Time To Die, the National Motor Museum’s exhibition Motoring in Miniature – On Tour, has been sharing nostalgic joy with shoppers as it goes on tour. Its first stop was Portsmouth, making its new temporary home in Cascades Shopping Centre.

As well as the DB5 stunt car, with its sensoractivated machine guns and rolling LED number plates, the Aston Martin DBS Superleggera, driven in the film by new agent Nomi, and the Aston Martin V8, last seen in 1987 film The Living Daylights, also take pride of place. Joining them are Bond’s Land Rover Series III, the film’s Land Rover Defender 110 and Chevrolet Bel Air, along with the Triumph Scrambler motorcycle and Royal Alloy Scooter.

While gadgets on show include Bond’s Q-enhanced Omega Seamaster Diver 300M watch, alongside technical plans for vehicle designs and DB5 weapons, costumes and accessories.

NEW ARRIVALS AT THE NATIONAL MOTOR MUSEUM A pair of remarkable, but very different, historic vehicles have been turning heads since going on show in the National Motor Museum this year.

Newly-arrived and known to countless rallying fans, the 2002 Ford Focus WRC was once driven by rallying legend Colin McRae. Campaigned by McRae and Nicky Grist in the 2002 Rallye Catalunya – Costa Brava, in which they finished sixth overall, this Focus also became one of the automotive stars of the PlayStation game Colin McRae Rally 3. On loan from its owner, it truly is a very special piece of motorsport history.

From a very different era, the 1953 Connaught L3/SR is one of just three examples built, a sports racing development of the L3. Its sleek twoseater bodywork, built around a wooden frame

by Abbotts of Farnham, clothes a Lea Francis engine and chassis, and independent torsion bar front suspension. With its aeroscreens and minimalist mudguards, the recently-donated Connaught really looks the part.

GOLDEN ARROW PROJECT As part of the Arts Council England funded project Golden Arrow – Shot from the Past, Aimed at the Future, the National Motor Museum Trust has been sharing some of the remarkable stories surrounding Sir Henry Segrave’s Land Speed Record-breaking Golden Arrow.

Visitors can now take a free Golden Arrow themed tour of the National Motor Museum, using the Smartify app on their smartphone. The tour takes visitors around selected galleries and objects in the museum, uncovering the stories that connect Golden Arrow with the history of motoring. All the visitors need to do to access the tour is to scan a QR code at designated signage point in the museum, or by downloading the Smartify app for free.

AUTOCAR AND BEAULIEU ANNOUNCE THEIR TOP FIVE FUTURE CLASSICS The National Motor Museum and Autocar magazine have jointly named their top five Future Classics, after thousands of votes by readers and museum visitors.

With the National Motor Museum celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, the Autocar Beaulieu Future Classics poll has identified five contemporary motoring icons that, in another 50 years, you may well find on display in the museum.

The Alfa Romeo Quadrifoglio, Alpine A110, BMW i3, Land Rover Defender and Toyota GR Yaris have been crowned as the winners and will go on display at Beaulieu, as well as being recognised at this year’s Autocar Awards.

Out of all the cars currently on sale, deciding which ones were worthy winners of the Autocar Beaulieu Future Classics title wasn’t easy. The Autocar team developed a long list of more than 100 eligible cars, before readers and Beaulieu visitors voted to cut this list down to just 10 entries. These were then whittled down to the top five by a panel of Autocar and Beaulieu experts.

Autocar road test editor Matt Saunders commented: “All the cars we celebrate today deserve their place in our Future Classics line-up. They demonstrate the richness and variety of the car market in an era that many will look back on with great fondness. But they also show the passion and knowledge that our readers and Beaulieu visitors have for modern-day cars.”

NEW CHIEF EXECUTIVE FOR THE NATIONAL MOTOR MUSEUM TRUST The National Motor Museum Trust has appointed museum professional and car enthusiast Dr Jon Murden as its new Chief Executive, to lead it on the next step of its journey. Previously Executive Director of Dorset Museum, Jon will be ensuring the Trust’s long-term sustainability and playing a key role in raising its profile, acting as an advocate and ambassador for the organisation, developing partnerships and building relationships.

Smartify is the world’s most downloaded museum app, hosting over 2 million artworks across 300 museums. Using text, video and audio, Smartify brings objects and their history to life.

Meanwhile, the curatorial team have been delving into the archives to uncover some of the lesser-known stories surrounding the famous machine. From an insight into Sir Henry and Lady Segrave, to an in-depth look at the design and build of the legendary machine, a series of blogs on the National Motor Museum Trust website make fascinating reading. During his 12 years at Dorset Museum, Jon has overseen its transformation, including the redevelopment of its galleries, interpretation and storage facilities, and delivering such exciting temporary exhibitions as the multi-award winning Dippy on Tour: A Natural History Adventure. Now, he is responsible for delivering the National Motor Museum’s mission, vision and strategy, as it looks towards its own future and the future of mobility.

Jon spends much of his spare time running, maintaining and restoring his small collection of classic cars, which includes a 1957 Hillman Minx, 1977 MG Midget and 1978 Austin Allegro.

2022 CALENDAR OF MOTORING EVENTS Spring Autojumble on 14th – 15th May and International Autojumble on 10th – 11th September are not the only calendar highlights for 2022, with a number of unmissable motoring events taking place in the grounds of the National Motor Museum.

Simply Aston Martin on 3rd April will be the first of 16 busy Simply rallies taking place in the grounds of the National Motor Museum, while new rally Simply Italian is on National Drive-It Day, 24th April. Look out for old favourites, including Simply Ford, Simply Land Rover and Simply Jaguar, while Simply Electric and Simply French will be returning as they continue to grow.

For impressive hot rods and jaw-dropping custom cars and bikes, along with live music and dancing demonstrations, Hot Rod & Custom Show on Father’s Day 19th June is a must-see. While for highoctane thrills, Supercar Weekend on 6th – 7th August is one of the biggest supercar gatherings on the south coast.

INTERNATIONAL AUTOJUMBLE BEST STAND An International Autojumble tradition, the Best Stand Award is presented to the stallholders whose pitch truly captures the spirit of the show. Winning the coveted prize in 2021 were Mark, Andy, Sarah and Jamie Burnett of Burlen Fuel Systems, whose vibrant stand promoting the newly-formed J40 Motor Company caught the eye of judge Danny Hopkins, editor of event media sponsor Practical Classics magazine.

“Winning the award really does mean quite a lot to us,” said Managing Director Mark Burnett.

“Although we know the classic market and the people in it, when we took on the business which had been started by Roy Halford almost 40 years ago, we didn’t know if people would be unsure about the J40 Motor Company. But the welcome we have received has been unbelievable. People really love it!”

Although show regulars Burlen have exhibited at Beaulieu since the 1970s, this was the first show that the family-run firm had attended since recently launching their new venture, devoted to remanufacturing high quality spare parts for the iconic Austin J40 pedal car. From wheels, tyres and braking components, to bumpers, lights, steering wheels and seats, the J40 Motor Company has plans to offer even more spares for these pint-sized classics, which were originally built from 1949 to 1971 by Austin.
