Welcome to the Beaulieu River & Buckler’s Hard Yacht Harbour
The Beaulieu River is an unspoilt haven, rich in wildlife and history - ideal for short stays or as a permanent base. Peaceful and sheltered, the Beaulieu River offers tranquility and picturesque displays of natural beauty. Its undeveloped banks play host to an exceptional variety of flora and fauna, where woodland gives way to tidal saltmarsh. Only 25 minutes from the M27 motorway, the river marks the south eastern edge of the Beaulieu Estate, and is one of the few privately owned estuaries in the world. Four centuries of custodianship by the forebears of Lord Montagu have ensured the number of moorings has been carefully controlled.
The river offers 115 marina berths and over 300 moorings, which are served by a seasonal water taxi. Buckler’s Hard Yacht Harbour, holder of the prestigious five Gold Anchor Award, offers full marina services, now including an open policy boatyard and chandlery. Along with a range of other benefits permanent berth holders can take advantage of the Yacht Harbour’s membership of the TransEurope group of marinas, which provides reciprocal discounts when visiting over 70 partner marinas around the UK and Europe.

Buckler ’s Hard Village
At the heart of the Beaulieu River is Buckler’s Hard, an 18th century village where ships were once built for Nelson’s navy. Originally named ‘Montagu Town’ by John, 2nd Duke of Montagu, Buckler’s Hard developed into a hive of shipbuilding activity in the late 1700s. With New Forest oak on the doorstep, it was ideally situated for such a task. The cottages that line the unusually wide street – where logs and planks were once piled - housed tradesmen and labourers.
Step through the doors of a worker’s cottage as you go back in time to the 18th century to find out about the home life of the villagers and their families in historic cottage displays. One building, once the village school, is now a chapel which still holds regular services. Recent excavations of its cellar have suggested that the building may have been used by smugglers.
Shipbuilding here went into decline shortly after the Napoleonic wars, but the village has remained unspoilt by the passage of time. In the Maritime Museum you will discover the fascinating story of the village, its residents and the ships they built, including Nelson’s favourite warship HMS Agamemnon. Listen in to conversations between villagers of the past in the 18th century New Inn and follow the stories of the 19th and 20th century residents in an exhibition about village life.
To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the SS Persia, a memorial sundial and new artefacts can now been seen at the Buckler’s Hard Maritime Museum. The Captain’s Cabin Tearooms, an ideal location for a cream tea, offers a wide range of refreshments, all day snacks and light lunches.

Tom Cunliffe on the Beaulieu River I sometimes feel sorry for sailors from parts of the world where there’s no tide. A sixtymile passage at six knots in the Mediterranean can start any day after breakfast and arrive in time to pour the cocktails before sunset. Dull isn’t it? We English Channel mariners enjoy richer lives than that. There’s no denying that when the skipper announces a 0530 start to catch the first of the ebb from Beaulieu Bar out to the Needles he isn’t always the most popular man on board, especially when he insists on dropping down to the lower reach the night before to anchor, but it all looks different in the morning. Coming on deck with sleep still in our eyes, warming our hands around a mug of tea, the world is transformed into a magical place. Not a breath of wind disturbs the water as the last hour of the flood tiptoes around the anchor chain. The engine rumbles quietly into life while the windlass cranks in the streaming chain. A shallow blanket of land mist has just drifted downriver. In the fields, cows wade knee-deep in it, but the sun will burn it off by the time the boat reaches The Solent. The hook
14
breaks out and a dawn flight of duck takes off to pass so close overhead that the thrum of the wingbeats is audible. The high-water stand has almost begun and, with the boat swinging away past the three-legged dolphin marker at the bar, there’s nearly four metres of tide to add to the 0.9 charted depth just outside. No worries there, then; the boat can clear the dolphin and set a course for the deep water beyond Beaulieu Spit. The ebb’s well away out here. As she swishes down to the westward the smell of frying bacon wafts up the companionway, the upper limb of the sun pops out beyond Portsmouth, the crew have the whole world to themselves and they’ll be in Cherbourg in time for dinner at Le Pommier. To work with the tide is to operate with nature. Most of us use the water to escape from railway timetables, scheduled conference calls and office hours. The tide is an inescapable force that nobody yet born can do a thing to alter. Accepting its supremacy leads to an inner peace that is not for sale to people of the land. At Beaulieu, the tide is the heartbeat of the river and while its rhythms may not
conform conveniently to the movements of an atomic clock, it follows patterns set by greater things. When the moon is full, or a new crescent is chasing the setting sun, spring high water stands for two hours and more at mid-day or midnight, but around six-ish, depths on the bar at low water are pretty thin. With a half-moon bringing neap tides, low water comes around the middle of the day and, weather permitting, a boat with moderate draught will be able to enter the river at any time of day or night.
Once, I kept a boat here that drew 2.4 metres without any problems. Today, my yacht has 2.1 and looks for another half a metre to be sure. If I’m too lazy to do my sums or can’t be bothered to check the tide on my chart plotter, I can reckon on safety two hours either side of low water unless it’s blowing an onshore gale. Beaulieu is the friendliest bar I know, and I’ve seen plenty. Working the tides across it is never a nuisance. It’s a bonus which adds texture to our days. Tom Cunliffe, Author, Journalist & Broadcaster 15

The tall red brick chimney is that of the old estate brickworks which drew on the local deposits of clay. Built in 1790, it last produced bricks in 1935 and is now a private residence. It was here that Salisbury, the first naval vessel to be built on the river, was completed in 1698. 24
3 Riverside Walk
This alternative route gives closer views over the river, all of which is a designated National Nature Reserve. The flat area you see is known as a ‘salting’. Grass species such as Spartina have helped to stabilise the mud banks over time. The path passes some small creeks notable for plumed reeds, especially the Yellow Flag Iris in summer. Also look for Sea Lavender, Cord Grass and Sea Purslane.
4 Burnt Oak Copse
The trees here are predominantly Oak dating from the early 19th century. Later these were supplemented by Wild Service, Hazel, Scots Pine and Beech with Common Privet, Butcher’s Broom, Holly and Hawthorn, providing shelter and food for game birds. Note the stunted tree growth at the river’s edge, caused by poor drainage and the salt water from the river.
5 Keeping Marsh
An open expanse of various salt tolerant plants. This mud bank is the holding area for dredgings from the river but is quickly being colonised by indigenous plant and animal life, notably Shellduck, Canada Geese, Mallard, Oystercatchers, Redshank and Curlew. A public bird hide is also located here, accessible from the footpath and suitable for wheelchair users.
6 Agamemnon Boatyard
Hub of boating activity on the river of today.
7 Duke’s Bath House
This small thatched cottage was built by George, Duke of Montagu, c1760 for his son who suffered from arthritis. Salt water was considered beneficial for sufferers of arthritis so a pond in the garden was filled with river water, in which people could bathe.

26
This is the site of the old oyster beds created in the 1870s. During the Second World War, an experimental floating dock was built here, together with components for the Mulberry Harbour, used in the D-Day landings. 1 Today, oysters are again being bred on the river, where the water is pure enough for a licence to be granted.
3 Fiddler’s Reach
Buckler ’s Hard
4 Gins
This was where the monks of Beaulieu Abbey kept their fishing boats and trading ships. It was a convenient place to load and unload without having to navigate the narrower channel upstream. The name ‘Gins’ is thought to derive from ‘ingenium’, a lifting or winding mechanism used to move the load. Today, Gins is a base for the Royal Southampton Yacht Club. An oil pipeline from Wytch Farm near Poole to Fawley Oil Refinery passes under the river at this point.
2
In the 18th century, this was an anchoring point for the hulls of newly launched ships en route for Portsmouth. The grass that covers the mudflats along the river is called Spartina Townsendii. This first appeared on the river in the 1870s to help bind the mud flats, 3 thus reducing erosion. A second variety, Spartina Anglicana, was introduced in 1898.
5 Sea Banks
The land behind these banks was reclaimed in the 18th century and 4 used for salt production. Salt was a highly prized commodity and Salt Gins Officers were based in Buckler’s Hard to check that the quantity of salt produced tallied with the amount of tax paid. 200 years later, the banks remain intact, but they do not hold out the highest tides, and the meadows behind are periodically flooded. This provides waterfowl, particularly Brent Geese and Wigeon, with feeding areas in autumn and winter.

6 Needs Ore Coastguard Cottages
Built in the 1860s for the Coastguard, who were at the forefront of the fight against smuggling, as well as defence and rescue. Officers were moved around from station to station to prevent them becoming established in the local community and susceptible to bribery and collusion. The Needs Ore Station closed in 1922 but the cottages continue to be occupied by tenants of the estate.
7 Needs Ore Point
This was where Charles Bull created his ‘Bull’s Run’ in 1726-27 as a shortcut into the river from the Solent. It was closed by a Special Act of Parliament in 1986 to protect Gull Island from erosion. Needs Ore is the base of the Beaulieu River Sailing Club whose dinghy races take place in this part of the river.
8 Gull Island
This is actually a spit and owes its name to the Black-Headed Gulls which used to nest here in abundance, and after a period of time away are now nesting again. This forms part of the Special Protection Area (SPA) and is out of bounds to public.
9 Millennium Beacon
This miniature lighthouse serves as a day mark and contains a sectored light for guiding boats into the river at night. Its construction was kindly funded by many of the yachtsmen who use these waters. The lands bordering the river contain an exceptional variety of habitats which support an equally varied assemblage of wildlife. To protect important colonies of nesting seabirds, Gull Island 9 Lepe House and Warren Shore are closed to the public; however, access to other parts of the 7 Reserve is possible by permit, issued Inchmery 8 6 by the Beaulieu Estate Office. 9

Uncovering Buckler’s Hard Historic Shipyard In 2016 we worked with the New Forest National Park Authority to do a number of days of archaeology with volunteers on the old historic shipyard site looking for some of the lost buildings. This is part of the ‘Our Past Our Future’ project to discover and learn more of our local heritage and give training in practical archaeology skills to volunteers. We have old maps of Buckler’s Hard that show the location of the 18th shipyard buildings and in particular we are keen to find the Forge, Mould Loft and Timber sheds. This area was known as East Timber Yard and has grown over with scrub and small trees in the past 100 years hiding evidence of the old shipyard. This was carefully cleared and three trenches dug to try to establish evidence from earlier periods. We found that a huge amount of WW2 debris had been deposited on top of the whole site which made the task harder. This included large metal slipway parts, old wire and some quite hazardous bits. But below this is a huge amount of older evidence. It is clear that the buildings had clay tile roofs due to the huge amount of tile that was found. We also found small channels filled with broken tile, these are suggested to be eaves gullies which would provide an idea of the building widths. In the forge area, a lot of metal parts were found such as horseshoes, nails, bolts, dogs (clamps used for shipbuilding), and a lot of coal slag from the forge. Numerous soil samples have been taken to be processed and analysed. 34
More work needs to be done in 2017 to continue the research and we hope to find additional evidence as to the size of the buildings, the materials used and precise locations. In time it is hoped that the Shipwright School will be extended and we will be able to build a replica 18th Century Forge building as iron work is a vital part of any boatbuilding process. We will use the information we find to inform our designs and plans. In the meantime you will see students working at the Shipwright School at times through the year, working with large pieces of local timber using traditional tools. Mary Montagu-Scott

The Birds of the Beaulieu River The navigable part of the Beaulieu River takes one from the tight meanders, bordered by rich woodland, where one is as likely to see a sparrow hawk as a lapwing, to the more expansive estuary, full of flocks of winter wildfowl and waders. In summer, terns and the occasional osprey from Africa occupy the estuary, whilst the upper reaches resound to the sounds of resident song birds, migrant warblers, and even a nightingale or two. Below are eight birds that one is likely to see at various times of year along the River and its banks.
Little Egret All year round
Brent Goose
Winter visitor - September to April
Sandwich Tern
Summer visitor - March to October
This small white heron only colonised the south coast in the late 1980’s. They are now common along the River and some breed nearby. They avoid competing with their larger relative the Grey Heron, by targeting smaller fish and prawns in the creeks and shallows of the estuary. Adults have black legs and bright yellow feet. In the breeding season they also sport fine plumes on the head, back and neck. The brent geese that we see on the River spend their summers on breeding grounds at the top of Russia. Many of them winter in the Solent, often alongside the larger feral Canada geese. The Brent geese are smaller and darker than the Canadas. They graze grass in the fields and various weeds along the shore. In mid winter the River and its environs support close to 2000 of these attractive wild geese. The Sandwich tern is named after the town in Kent, but is reasonably common all along the south coast. The Sandwich tern is one of three species of tern that stay to nest locally, the others being the common and the little. Of the three, the Sandwich is the largest with a black bill and a short, forked tail. They often stay on the River into late autumn, before flying to winter in West and Southern Africa.
Osprey | Summer visitor - August to October Ospreys are now breeding in good numbers in Scotland and therefore the River often hosts passage migrants from that population. Whilst on their way to winter grounds in West Africa, they stop off to feed on the grey mullet and flounder from the River. The osprey’s large size and habit of hovering over the River, make them easy to differentiate from the local buzzards, some of which can appear in pale plumages. 36
Peregrine Falcon | All year round Their reputation for power in flight is justly deserved and all of the duck, waders and gulls on the River are well aware of the danger posed by a peregrine on the hunt. One or two peregrines often sit on posts or shingle banks bordering the estuary. Whilst at rest the smaller birds are content to feed but, as soon as a peregrine takes to the air, the other birds take flight in panic.
Redshank
All year round
Black-tailed Godwit Winter visitor & passage migrant - July to May
Black-headed Gull All year round
A medium-sized brown wader with orange-red legs and pale under parts. They search for worms along the tidal mud and wet margins. In winter large numbers of migrant redshank arrive from Scandinavia and Eastern Europe to winter alongside our resident birds. In spring the migrants leave us, whilst the resident redshank settle down to nest in protected reserves alongside the River. The results of many ringing studies have revealed that the black-tailed godwits that we commonly see along the River in winter, and throughout the Solent, have come from breeding grounds in Iceland. The godwits have long, straight bills, long dark legs and a greyish winter plumage. In spring, the adult males turn a beautiful chestnut-red on their heads, necks and backs, making them very recognisable. The most common small gull of the region. Many nest in colonies around the Solent, but we also find migrants here in winter from as far away as the Baltic. Their name is misleading; because never in the life of a “Black-headed gull does it have a black head! Their heads are dark brown in summer and almost pure white in winter.

Visit Beaulieu
Just two miles upstream from Buckler’s Hard Yacht Harbour is the New Forest village of Beaulieu, the family seat of the Montagu family and the location of the world famous National Motor Museum. Founded by King John in 1204, Beaulieu Abbey was a thriving Cistercian monastery until it was destroyed under the orders of Henry VIII in 1538. The conserved ruins of this vast medieval abbey include an exhibition on its history and the monks who once lived and worked within.
The Secret Army Exhibition reveals the story behind Beaulieu’s covert wartime role as a ‘finishing school’ for secret agents.
Explore Palace House and gardens to discover the history of the Victorian styled country home and its former residents.
Beaulieu also hosts a number of events, including the annual Autojumbles and Boatjumble.
Once the Great Gatehouse of Beaulieu Abbey, Palace House remains home to the Montagu family having been in their ownership since 1538. Visitors can now see additional rooms, including the late Edward, Lord Montagu’s library.

With over 250 vehicles in its collection, the National Motor Museum tells the story of motoring on the roads and circuits of Britain from pioneering origins to the present day. From the earliest motor carriages to classic family saloons, displays include historic sporting motors, motorcycles, F1 racers and a rustic 1930’s country garage. The World of Top Gear recreates the feel of the TV studio featuring a unique behindthe-scenes video presentation. This is complimented by a tongue-in-cheek display of the cars modified for the challenges seen on our screens.

Visitors can also ride the high level Monorail which circles the site and offers informative commentary and sweeping views of the park.
