Editorial

Promotion of the Year Contest I hope that you, your family, your employees and your customers are safe and healthy. I am sure many of you are happy to see the end of this ice cream season. It has been a rough one, to say the least and I know some stores did not survive. But to those of you who did survive, it goes to show how you can adapt to any situation. I am sure we have all learned and grown in some way during this pandemic. In a way, it gave us time to reflect and to be with family, time to take a much needed breath, for a short while.

The stores that did open had to adjust to new safety measures for your employees and customers. Cleaning and sanitizing were never ending, now more than ever before. But you did it!

And you should be very proud of yourself. Let’s all look forward to a better year in 2021.

On a personal note, the one thing I miss the most during the past several months is being able to hug someone.

So the next time you see me, if it is safe, please give me a hug!

Not surprisingly, many of the promotions had to do with surviving the pandemic and in doing so, created much goodwill with customers and the community as a whole.

Little Cottage Ice Cream in Roscommon, Michigan, owned by Brian Trupp was chosen as the winner of the contest. Not only was he able to sell and deliver his ice cream during the pandemic, but he also created an additional business that he will profit from for many years to come. Congratulations!

The 2021 Calendar of Industry Events and Promotion Planning Guide begins on page 16. We only received a few dates for industry events due to the pandemic. If you have always gone to a particular trade show or distributor open house in January and February, please check with the sponsoring company to make sure it is still being held. Many distributors told me they are waiting to see what happens with travel restrictions and gathering sizes before they schedule their events.

News SEPTEMBER 10, 2020, marked the kickoff of the United Way of the Coastal Empire’s annual fundraising campaign.

Each year through this effort, United Way raises millions of dollars to support more than 50 local nonprofit agencies that provide critical health and human services to thousands of people in a four-county region of Bryan, Chatham, Effingham, and Liberty. With a focus on education and youth development, financial stability, and health and wellness, the United Way of the Coastal Empire needs the community’s support now more than ever.

As part of this year’s United Way campaign, renowned ice cream maker and Hollywood film producer Stratton Leopold has developed a special ice cream flavor that will be offered at Leopold’s Ice Cream for a limited time only during the campaign. Proceeds from the sales of the new flavor will benefit United Way of the Coastal Empire’s annual campaign.

City of Savannah’s Mayor Van Johnson joined Chief Terry Enoch, 2020 Campaign Chair for United Way of the Coastal Empire, and Stratton Leopold, owner of Leopold’s Ice Cream, for the ceremonial first scoop of the newly created “Georgia Pecan Blues” made with Georgia-grown pecans and blueberries. The flavor was created with the cooperation of Gary Black and the Georgia Department of Agriculture to feature Georgia grown pecans and blueberries.

IT’S TIME, ONCE AGAIN, to showcase the gold standard of foodservice equipment innovation. The National Restaurant Association Show is now accepting applications for the 2021 Kitchen Innovation (KI) Awards. The KI Awards program recognizes the year’s most forward-thinking and cutting-edge innovations that meaningfully improve foodservice operations.

The KI Award products are traditionally honored for helping industry growth through a focus on automation, efficiency, safety improvements, sustainability, waste solutions, and more. Each 2021 KI Awardee will be featured in the KI Showroom at the 2021 Show, to be held May 22-25 at McCormick Place in Chicago.

The KI Showroom draws high-profile crowds with dedicated exhibit space for each KI Awardee, open spaces for conversations, and fireside chats where experts share insights about implementing innovative equipment solutions. Throughout the four-day event, the KI Showroom will welcome operators, dealers, consultants, and media professionals where they will have the opportunity to see product demonstrations and connect with each award recipient. All KI Awardees receive industry-wide exposure before and after the Show.

The awards are chosen by an independent panel of judges comprised of industry leaders and internationally recognized food facility consultants, multi-unit executives, and design experts. The deadline to apply is December 16, 2020.

To qualify, all equipment innovations must have been introduced within 24 months prior to the 2021 Restaurant Show.

News IT IS WITH GREAT SADNESS that we inform you, John Agliato, owner of Electro Freeze Tri-State and industry legend, passed away on August 14th, 2020.

From his start in the early 80s until his passing, John bled Electro Freeze blue. John got his first taste of the industry by getting behind the wheel of the delivery truck when the driver called in sick. From there, he transitioned into selling Broaster and Smokaroma equipment and quickly found a knack for sales. After winning numerous awards selling fryers and pressure smokers, the company decided to let him try his hand at selling ice cream machines. From that point on, John became a driving force in the ice cream industry. Taking over the company in the early 90s, John continued to grow the business to become the top distributor for Electro Freeze.

John was also a key figure for the Electro Freeze Distributor council and mentored many distributors across the country on how to run a successful business. From setting up an open house to customer follow up and more, John was always ready to lend a hand and share his knowledge. He was also instrumental in working with the factory to innovate and develop new equipment such as the Fuzionate 9-flavor machine.

His expertise and experience was used to grow the Carvel brand both domestically and internationally, sitting on various councils and boards through the years. John, along with some key industry representatives, was responsible for bringing the world milkshakes through Five Guys. John traveled to each Five Guys location and demonstrated how to operate, clean and maintain the shake machine-an amazing accomplishment. He was very proud to be responsible for the first addition to the Five Guys menu since inception. John also worked closely with accounts such as Mister Softee, Arbys, Checkers, Dairy Queen, Sonic, Ralph’s Italian Ices and many more.

Outside of work, John was responsible for bettering the lives of countless youth hockey and baseball players through years of coaching and mentoring. He loved to coach and watch his kids play, from beginner to collegiate hockey. Extremely hard working in all aspects of life, John would give the shirt off his back for anyone in need.

John graduated from St. John’s University. He was married to Beth Agliato in 1980 and they had three children.

He is survived by his wife Beth, his son Michael, daughter Analiese and son Joseph. Beloved grand-children are Alessandra, Rhees, Troy and Giovanna.

Electro Freeze Tri-State has been a family owned and operated business for over 55 years and as such, will remain so. Moving forward his children, Joseph and Analiese, the third generation of the company founded by grandfather Bernard Rosen, will proudly carry on the traditions of the company. All of John’s incoming calls and emails are currently being forwarded to both Joseph and Analiese who will delegate communications to the necessary departments. News HILL & MARKES a family-owned wholesale distributor, hosted a Stuff the Truck food drive for Catholic Charities on Saturday, October 10th from 8 am – 12 pm. A Hill & Markes truck was parked outside Hannaford in Amsterdam, NY, where donations of non-perishable food items were collected for those in need. Hygiene products, gift cards, etc. were also accepted!

“We at Catholic Charities have seen an increase in the number of families who struggle with food insecurity during this time of COVID. We are anticipating that it will get worse as COVID continues; holidays approach and people remain unemployed,” says Mary Carpenter, Executive Director at Catholic Charities. “All donations received in our Food Pantry will be going to our community members, neighbors and loved ones in this time of insecurity and uncertainty. I truly appreciate and am overwhelmed by the commitment and caring that Hill and Markes has shown for those in need now and throughout the year.”

Giving back to the community is important to the Hill & Markes mission and remains a core pillar of the company.

“Hill & Markes is a great community partner that is always looking for ways to give back to the community. I’m grateful for their efforts to collect food items for those in need during these difficult times, and I urge all the residents of Montgomery County to take part,” said Senator George Amedore.

“COVID has exacerbated food insecurity in our country and this region. My family, our employees, and our company are grateful to be able to help feed struggling individuals and families in Montgomery and Fulton counties at this time,” said CEO of Hill & Markes, Jason Packer. “We are so incredibly thankful for Catholic Charities for the work they do in feeding the hungry and supporting this initiative during this pandemic and beyond.”

THE NATIONAL RESTAURANT Association (NRA) sent a letter to the National Governors Association and the U.S. Conference of Mayors to set the record straight on the safety efforts restaurants are taking during the COVID-19 pandemic. The letter highlights how the industry was highly regulated by state and federal requirements before the pandemic and has stepped up its safety protocols to meet new state and federal mandates for reopening. The Association also dispels some of the inaccurate information about the industry that continues to dot media coverage, social media conversations, and statements from some public officials.

When states began to think about coming out of the pandemic shutdown this spring, the Association worked with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), academia, the Conference for Food Protection, public health officials and industry representatives, to produce a detailed Restaurant Reopening Guidance on how to reopen in a safe way for employees, customers, and their communities.

Throughout this public health crisis, the NRA has been focused on making the latest and most important scientific information about the novel corona virus and the latest best practices for operation during the pandemic easily available.

News REFRIGERATED SOLUTIONS Group (RSG), manufacturer of refrigerated equipment and service, recently announced additions to its commercial sales team.

Chris Carney and Howard McCann were recently named Regional Sales Managers. Both will report directly to Bob Stevens, Director of Dealer Sales for RSG. “Chris and Howard’s expertise in regional sales gives me great confidence that both will be strong assets as the Regional Sales Managers for the Master-Bilt and Nor-Lake brands,” stated Stevens. “Both have vast foodservice equipment experience with a focus on customer relationships and manufacturer representative group enablement that will greatly contribute to the success of our RSG team,” Stevens noted.

Carney recently held the Regional VP position with the Middleby Corporation where he was responsible for key sales activities and collaborated with the product management teams. Earlier in his career, he served as a Regional Sales Manager for Clabo USA. McCann recently held the position of outside sales representative with the Yes Group, managing all market segments.

Prior to working with the Yes Group, he worked with Clarification Technology as the North America Sales Manager.

Feras Affani recently joined the RSG team as Strategic Account Manager, reporting directly to Craig Hammel, Director of Strategic Accounts.

“Affani’s expertise in Strategic Accounts, makes me proud to have Feras on the RSG team and I am confident that his role will be critical in developing and growing our strategic customer opportunities for both Master-Bilt and NorLake brands,” Hammel stated.

Affani recently worked with Everidge as the VP of National Accounts, where he was responsible for all national chain sales and development.

Each new member of the team brings a wealth of experience and knowledge that will help enrich the RSG customer experience and develop strategic opportunities with our customers and channel partners.

CARPIGIANI GELATO UNIVERSITY, the international gelato school with 20 campuses in 19 different countries, has started to provide its instructors’ know-how for a new and enriched catalog of online courses, not forgetting that, like all culinary arts, gelato making is learned by experimenting every day in the laboratory. Those who want to start approaching the world of gelato can now begin from the first date of the Basic Gelato Course on November 9th at 9 am (GMT -4).

The course lasts 5 days – from November 9th to 13th – and consists of 4 hours of theory and demonstration and 1 hour of group discussion each day. After the Basic Course you will have a solid knowledge of Italian artisan gelato and you will be able to: understand ingredients and different production methods, produce gelato, sorbet and stick gelato, plan your investments, compare retail strategies, respect hygiene criteria in the laboratory.

Then you can continue with the Intermediate Gelato Course on November 16th and the Advanced Gelato Course 10

on November 23rd. For professionals, the online education goes from the current “Home Delivery Solution” in Italian and English for those who want to face the emergency by activating the home delivery service, to advanced and specific courses such as “Gelato for lactose intolerant” or “Gelato with alcoholic drinks”.

The courses are available on the website at www.gelatouniversity.com in the “Online Courses” area.

Carpigiani Gelato University was founded in 2003 and its mission is to educate people about the culture of artisanal gelato. This year the school has organized more than 400 courses in 10 languages, for a total of more than 12,000 hours of instruction.

BRUSTER’S REAL ICE CREAM had a fruitful summer season in which it broke the system wide record for same store sales growth and selling nearly 2.5x more new franchise agreements from the same time period in 2019, the company also recognized an opportunity to deliver on its core values – respect, accountability, involvement, heart and fun. That’s why Bruster’s is proud to announce its first-annual benefit with Feeding America in September during Hunger Action Month.

“We’re fortunate to be in a position to give back and we take that responsibility very seriously,” said Jennifer Brinker, VP of Marketing at Bruster’s. “Our partnership with Feeding America will help us to reach more families and individuals and be part of a larger effort to fight hunger.”

As an Enterprise Society partner, Bruster’s helped to raise awareness and donations during Hunger Action Month with its own fundraiser at all U.S. store locations on Saturday, September 12. On that day, Bruster’s donated $1 for every waffle cone sold. Every $1 donated helps provide 20 meals for people in need.

“This a great opportunity for customers to try our freshly made ice cream flavors in our delicious, handmade waffle cones – while also making a difference,” continued Bruster’s CEO Jim Sahene. “We encourage customers to visit their local shops on Saturday, September 12 to support Feeding America.”

Bruster’s has set an initial fundraising goal of $20,000 via store sales. Additionally, the Corporate Office has committed 100 percent match (up to $20,000) bringing the total possible minimum donation to $40,000. These funds will go to Feeding America who, in turn, will manage outreach to those in need in local communities. But Bruster’s Real Ice Cream hopes to do more.

“While this is our first year working with Feeding America, we hope to make it the first of many years,” Sahene said.

“We hope together with franchise owners and customers we can surpass anticipated donations to maximize impact.”

To ensure customers are confident and comfortable visiting their local shops on September 12 (and throughout the month), Bruster’s continues to take the utmost safety precautions to ensure stores are maintaining operations at the highest level.

With the onset of the 2020 Covid-19 health crisis, fears, reactions and restrictions, Little Cottage Ice Cream speculated that if our customers could not get to us, we would deliver to them. Little Cottage invested in a delivery vehicle, established preliminary delivery parameters and presented our promotion to our customers and consumer base via the Little Cottage Facebook page, several Higgins Lake Facebook groups and an on-site premises marquee.

Our initial plans were to deliver dockside to the Higgins Lake North and South State Park boat launches as well as the West Higgins Lake DNR boat launch. This also included Higgins Lake North and South State Park Campgrounds, direct to the individual camp site. Dockside delivery was also included to the Higgins Lake Gerrish Township Marina.

After first seeking and obtaining The National Dipper

approval from the appropriate agencies: Central Michigan District Health Department, State of Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and local township officials, Little Cottage Ice Cream initiated and presented it plan to the public.

Consumer receipt and acceptance to this proposal was overwhelmingly positive and much better than expected. It was such a success that as well as the original planned delivery destinations, Little Cottage very quickly expanded to the delivery availability to mirror full shop operating hours, it expanded delivery to include individual resident cottages within a five mile radius and expanded to catering services upon a request to cater a wedding rehearsal dinner.

Little Cottage delivery promotion also developed into a substantial curbside delivery service at our location.

Customers would call in and settle their order in advance. When they arrived, Little Cottage would hand deliver to their vehicle at curb-side.

An overwhelming success, Little Cottage Ice Cream expects substantial expansion from this program next year and for many years to come.

Chill Out Ice Cream Parlor Anna Marie and Bob Decusky own Chill Ice Cream Parlor located in Shenandoah, Pennsylvania.

Our ice cream parlor serves three local school districts. The one school district is quite large for our area. In fact one of the players from this past year is going to Penn State to play football.

In October 2019 the star quarterback of the north Schuylkill Spartans was injured in a play and was paralyzed. He and all his teammates were very frequent visitors of Chill Out. They loved to come here after practice or just on the weekend and would gather outside on our patio and eat ice cream and have a good time with friends. All these boys were courteous, kind, and totally respectful.

This tragedy hurt all of us and touched all of us so much in our area.

We were closed when the accident happened, and when we opened we wanted to do something for this brave young man. Throughout this tragedy his attitude has been nothing but promise and positivity. He has had a smile on his face from day one.

His positive outlook on such a difficult situation has inspired so many people, that Bob and I decided to do a fundraiser campaign for him, even though it was seven months later after the accident.

We came up with a campaign that we would sell campfire Sundaes, which were made with hot fudge marshmallow and graham crackers along with our vanilla ice cream. We sold these Sundaes for $4.75 each, the regular price and for a five day period for every Sundae purchased in this campaign, we pledged to donate $5.00 to this fabulous young man. In five days we sold 402 campfire Sundays, and collected over $400 in cash.

Some people just chose to give a donation toward him. It ended up that we presented Jadyn Leiby with a check for $2,500. This was a tremendous fundraiser for us in such a small little area and in a five day period.

We truly believe that this young man is an inspiration to all of us.

We pray for him we support him and we love him.

It was truly a promotion and a campaign from our hearts and the people of this area totally supported him.

Cranford Vanilla Bean Creamery Cranford Vanilla Bean Creamery is owned by Ralph Kopelman and located in Cranford, New Jersey.

This past July we featured “Christmas in July” at our ice cream shop, Cranford Vanilla Bean Creamery. During the month of July we brought back our homemade artisanal holiday ice cream flavors Peppermint Bark, Eggnog Chip, Hot Cocoa and Gingerbread. Although “Christmas in July” is a popular idea in entertainment

and retail, we thought that it would be great to adapt this promotion to our ice cream business and take the opportunity to introduce new flavors as well.

We posted the promotion on our Facebook page, Instagram and within our store. As a result, we received a great response and our customer’s loved the idea!

Our objective was to promote our holiday flavors at the height of our busy summer season in hopes that our customers would remember how much they enjoy our holiday flavors and support our business during the colder months when business is slower. In addition we were able to bring about the holiday spirit and that magical feeling during this difficult time. Some of our customers who do not visit us in the colder months were not aware of our holiday flavors. By implementing this simple promotion we were able to bring greater visibility into our variety of flavors, customers had the opportunity to taste them, and as a result customers posted positive comments on our Facebook page, which was great advertising for us. They also verbally committed to visiting our shop during

the holiday season to have the opportunity to order these flavors again.

DeeZertz DeeZertz is owned by Dee and Pete Gastineau and located in Berne, Indiana.

In mid-April, 2020, America was in the throws of the Corona virus. No one knew what the future would bring.

Visitations were limited at hospitals and nursing homes. Restaurants, bars, churches, and non-essential stores were closed indefinitely. In the beautiful spring weather, when thoughts should be turning to ice cream, business owners were uncertain as to their future. Would they be allowed to open?

Would they also have to stay closed indefinitely?

Faithful customers of DeeZertz, a seasonal hand-dipped, homemade ice cream parlor in Berne, Indiana, began asking how they could get their favorite ice creams. We would have normally opened for the year at the beginning of April, but not this year. We were in full swing production-wise, so we had the product, but no way to disperse it.

Then came the idea to give away quarts of ice cream. We began advertising the give-away plans. All anyone

had to do was to call the store and leave their address and phone number on our voicemail. Then we went into action!

I would call the phone number and tell the recipient that ice cream was on its way. Then my husband would deliver the ice cream to the front porch, ring the doorbell and leave! No personal contact was made! Everyone who called was given a free quart of ice cream! Of course we had no problem finding people at home. Everyone was home—there was no place to go!

The calls began. Some called for themselves, some for their children or

for a family birthday. Of course, we never asked for a name, so no HIPAA regulations were violated. One mother even called from out of state for us to deliver to her daughter who lived in Berne and had contracted the Covid virus!

It was a fun couple of weeks! People were so appreciative and it was so nice to bring a little cheer to a community that was uncertain, lonely and scared!

This year’s motto: “Don’t let your ice cream melt while you are counting someone else’s sprinkles!”

Our objective #1 is to have fun and help with awareness of the plight of sharks worldwide. Objective #2 is to have a fun summer promo for our patrons, especially this year with the ban on travel.

We run a week long series of giveaways in store such as sundaes, gift certificates and t-shirts. And our grand promotion is taking your picture with our shark photo template while you visit our store.

Sales are always up on Shark Week and kids love to come in for the special sundae.

It’s a fun and easy promo, with very little cost to run. All it takes is a little pre-planning and coordinating with the dates of the Discovery Channel’s Shark Week.

We post photos all week (with parental permission) on Facebook and Instagram.

Kaiser’s Grateful Bean Café Kaiser’s Grateful Bean Café is located in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Oklahoma, like the rest of the country and the world, suffered a severe shortage of respiratory masks in March and April 2020 because of COVID-19. In accordance with Oklahoma City mandates and directives for the protection of the public, we closed our 1917 soda fountain. But we had a strong desire to help where we could help on the theory that all of us, wherever we are, are connected.

We decided to help the Oklahoma City Community by making masks.

Our team members created approximately 3500 masks and distributed these to the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Department, Fire Department, hospital and medical clinics, and the public. There was, of course, no charge for the masks.

During our mask “assembly line”, our team members used PPE: hair restraints, goggles, masks, single-use lab coats, and single-use gloves while producing masks. Team members had the choice of being at work producing 14

masks or choosing not to come to work to produce masks; in either case all team members were paid their regular pay. 90% of our team made the individual choice to come to do their part to fight the pandemic.

Leopold’s Ice Cream Leopold’s Ice Cream is located in Savannah, Georgia and owned by Stratton and Mary Leopold.

We rang in the year 2020 with such excitement and anticipation of a new decade and within just a few months, COVID-19 became a household word.

The tragedy of its effects goes beyond anything seen or felt in over 100 years.

Entire communities were required to shelter in place including Savannah, Georgia, changing life as we knew it...

Because of our unwavering commitment to serving our community for over 100 years, along with a true heartfelt belief that ice cream makes people happy, we knew we had to do our part to share some joy with our neighbors immediately, but what could we do?

That was the real question.

We pondered. What could we do to instill a sense of calm, promote a positive outlook, and especially bring about smiles. Thusly, “Scoops of Happiness” was born!

The basis of the campaign was simple: we invited Savannah locals to

share happiness all around by nominating their friends and family for a chance to receive a free pint of our super-premium, homemade ice cream.

Utilizing Facebook and Instagram marketing strategies and locally geofenced advertisements, we created custom graphics and launched an online event to announce the campaign.

Members of the community could nominate someone by simply tagging them in the comment section.

I gladly filmed several public service announcements and videos to promote staying at home and social distancing, as well as calling on the community to participate in the “Scoops of Happiness” giveaway.

Launching on April 1st, the promotion lasted 14 days. At the end of each day, one entry was randomly chosen to win two pints of ice cream: one for the nominee, and one for the person who made the nomination, for a total of 28 pints given away.

Each set of the winners was announced on cross posted Instagram and Facebook stories, and we encouraged them to share a photo enjoying their pint on their own social accounts. The support and love our brand received on social media was extraordinary.

We believe “Scoops of Happiness” was a delicious success. Over the lifespan of the campaign, our Instagram account actively gained up to 70 followers a day, the videos we shared were seen almost 3,000 times, and the daily stories received 500 viewers on average.

On Facebook, the number of page followers grew by 700% and our page engagement grew by almost 1400%.

And we saw over 6,000 unique visitors on our website.

In traditional media, we were featured on television, radio, and print publications, earning an advertising equivalency value of over $20,000 and a third party endorsement value of over $60,000.

We wanted to share this wonderful experience with other ice cream shops throughout the country, and encourage other owners to share a little happiness however they can, especially during these hard times when our neighbors need us the most.

Melody Gardens Restaurant and Skateland Melody Gardens Restaurant and Skateland is owned by Margie Schmidt and located in Marshfield, Wisconsin.

The news of shutting down our restaurant and roller skating rink due to the Coronavirus was, of course, devastating. So many tears and so many questions that first week. After the shock wore off, my husband and I knew we were going to work hard and get through this. We also knew a positive attitude was going to play a big part in not only getting through this on the business side of things but also for our own mindset. So, we started with carry out curb side service in the restaurant.

I spend a lot of time on skates on the weekend in our roller skating rink and I was missing it, so one day I put my roller skates on and started to deliver the food carry outs to the cars on

car hop feeling and it was awesome!

This was just what we needed, not only for us but for our customers and our community. An event enjoyed by all during a time when people were looking for some positives during the 2020 pandemic.

Staccato Gelato Staccato Gelato is located in Portland, Oregon and is owned by Steve Nice.

My name is Steve Nice, I own Staccato Gelato, with 3 locations in Portland Oregon. We were the first gelato shop in Portland, and have been in business for 17 years now, which makes us by far the oldest independent ice cream shop in town.

I came up with a promotion 4 years ago that has been very successful, and our customers look forward to it every year. Here’s the scoop: The moment it hits 80 degrees for the first time of the year, we give away 80 free cones. This year it happened on May 8th. It’s part

customer appreciation, and part fundraiser for a local charity.

It’s also a great way to promote the business, generating excitement as we launch into the busy summer season. I always put out a press release, and all the local news stations come out, even doing live spots while the line is out the door. I hate being on camera, though, haha.

I also never stop at 80 cones, I don’t want anybody to be disappointed, I estimate we usually go through around 150-200 at each location. We don’t give out samples, to keep the line moving, and I feel that my product cost is very minimal for the goodwill and buzz it creates.

This year was tough, of course, only one location was open at that time, not as busy, the line 6 foot distanced...

A positive thing that happened, though, was many of our customers insisted on paying, wanting to support small, local, neighborhood businesses. v
