Playing and singing in public? There ain’t no app for that

It’s been well documented that many people would rather croak than stand in front of an audience and deliver a speech. There ain’t no app for that. But if the prospect of public speaking makes you cringe, try singing and playing an instrument in front of a crowd. As a marginal musician who envies those who have real talent and aren’t shy about sharing it, I never thought I’d find myself playing guitar – much less singing – in front of a live audience, or even a dead one. I’d never survive the trauma. But that changed about 10 years ago, quite by accident. I was at church during a contemporary service and noticed there was no guitar in the praise band. Afterwards, I approached the worship leader, Matt Derden, and commented how good I thought the group’s music was and how a guitar would really enhance the sound. “Yes, but we can’t find anyone who wants to play,” he said. “Do you play?” “Well, some. I know a D7 from a C sharp minor, but I don’t mean…” “Are you volunteering?” he shot back with a sly grin, taking me by surprise. I wasn’t, and had no intention of dragging my banged-up Yamaha into the light of day. The very idea of playing in front of another person petrified me. But I thought about it and decided I wasn’t accomplishing much jamming to the same old tired Eagles tunes behind closed doors, so I decided to join in. No audition, no demand to see my Christian credentials or shred a scale to determine if I was worthy, no test to see if my arpeggios or pull-offs were sufficient, no list of references, no nothing, just the group and I moving ahead together totally on faith. To this day, I appreciate the fact Matt accepted me in the Christian way,

just as I was, without one power chord. The first week, I was so nervous my fingers knotted up, bent and frozen, and I thought I might get sick. My mind turned to mush just working through a simple G2/C2/D2 progression and Matt was probably kicking himself in the head. It took a few weeks to finally relax and stave off the shakes. Then it started to become an uplifting experience. Singing?! Well, that was simply out of the question. One hitch in high school choir was enough to confirm my gifts don’t extend much beyond being able to barely stay on pitch – at least occasionally, depending on the phase of the moon and the size of the hole in the ozone layer. But one day I was asked to play – and sing – in a Christmas program. I accepted, but was certain the experience would end in embarrassment. Turns out I made it through unscathed and decided I would begin operating on the principle, “What comes from the heart is received by the heart.” I’d simply do the best I could to create an atmosphere for worship and let the chips fall where they may. You might be thinking it’s just church, you know, where grace, love, and mercy abound...what could go wrong? I thought that, too, until folks started telling me the group was too loud and made the sanctuary sound like a saloon, that drums and guitars don’t belong in God’s House,

that the style of music wasn’t acceptable, that we should take that noise somewhere else, and besides, we could really use a lot more practice, etc. I was taken aback by these comments because even though I was a greenhorn, the other players were pretty good and I thought we offered something of quality. I was crestfallen to find out I was participating in something that instead of lifting people up actually made them wretch. And I recall wondering if this was the reason nobody wanted to play guitar in the first place and why, generally, people often avoid getting involved. I was puzzled because I couldn’t recall Christ telling folks they worshipped with too much zeal, too much passion, too much energy and too much volume. I’m not sure Christ ever stepped into the temple and said, “Hey, you hooligans, hold that racket down! The neighbors might hear! What are you doing, trying to wake the dead?! You’re acting like you’re praising the Creator of the cosmos or something! And you there, on the sheep’s horn! Are you tone-deaf?! Every time you butcher that high C, it’s a demerit!” If anything, I’d think Christ would jump on people for being too lukewarm, too apathetic, perhaps for being too judgmental. But that’s just me. I’m just a journalism major. What do I know? Though I’ve had my share of frustra-

tions related to contemporary Christian music - which happens when imperfect humans play music heard by other imperfect humans - I’ve also received the greatest treasure a musician could ever give or receive, which comes when you present a song with as much soul-stirring emotion as you can muster and someone approaches you afterwards and says your music has moved their spirit. Fortunately, that has happened far more often than the other stuff. It’s rich and life-affirming. At any rate, here are a few of the lessons I’ve learned about playing in public: • Just chill. Prepare and play the best you can because there’s always going to be at least one critic in the crowd no matter where you are, what you’re playing or how well you’re playing it. • Do not let that critic deter you. • Preparation, courage, concentration and faith are the antidotes to stage fright. • Tremendous rewards come to both you and others when you follow your spirit-led passion. • You’re never too old to break out. I recently shared these lessons with my 9-year-old daughter, who has already started backing out of activities because she’s too timid, self-conscious or insecure. I try to encourage her and tell her my story. I make sure she sees me practicing at home and I tell her confidence is built upon preparation and focus. So, when she sees me loose and composed while playing at church, she’s seeing the culmination of a process she’s witnessed behind the scenes and realizes you don’t have to be a prodigy to participate in activities that serve others. It took me dang near 40 years to grasp that. I hope she catches on a lot sooner than her Daddy.

Enjoy happy house plants away from the heat and humidity

Whether we admit it or not, heat and humidity this time of year make gardening outside less enjoyable. When I don’t spend as much time in my outside garden, I can turn to my collection of indoor plants. Successfully growing houseplants starts with understanding their needs. Houseplants contribute to and become an important part of the interior decor, but they are not furniture or knickknacks. They are alive. And like all living things, they have certain requirements that must be met to be healthy. Primary among these is light. Light is the energy plants use to create their food. You cannot grow a plant where there is not enough light, no matter how good it looks in that location. Houseplants are available from a variety of sources, from nurseries and flea markets to chain store garden centers. Quality is important. Always purchase plants that are vigorous and healthy with good color and an attractive shape with no insects or diseases. Look at the foliage carefully. Avoid plants with yellow leaves, brown leaf edges or spots that indicate the plant has been poorly cared for. Look for signs of scale, mealybugs or mites that

Choose a plant that will survive in the location where you intend to place it – particularly regarding the amount of light the spot receives. Different types of houseplants will grow in higher or lower light conditions. Ask the nursery staff to help with the selection, or check reference books or websites before you make your final decisions. When you purchase a plant, be sure the pot has a tag with the name of the plant on it, especially if this is a spur-of-the-moment purchase of a plant you’re not familiar with. Without a name, you cannot look up or ask someone for information about the plant. Houseplants are generally grouped into high light, medium light and low light categories. These generic terms have no clear meaning to most people, so here are

some guidelines: – High light levels are provided by unobstructed east-, southeast-, southwest- and west-facing windows. – Medium (in summer) to high (in winter) light levels are provided by unobstructed south-facing windows. – North-facing windows provide low light levels. Low light levels may also be provided by placing plants several feet away from east-, west- or south-facing windows. Light is most often provided by sunlight shining through windows, but artificial light can also be used effectively to grow indoor plants. Place plants where you have determined they will get the proper amount of light. Within four to eight weeks, the plant will indicate if there is a problem. Whether

there is actually enough light in the area is, after all, the plant’s decision – not yours. If no pests are present and a plant has been watered properly, a deteriorating condition usually indicates insufficient light. Move the plant to a brighter location. People obsess over how to water their houseplants. For the majority of plants it is simple. Stick your finger into the pot, and if the soil feels wet or moist, don’t water. If the soil feels dry, water. Do not allow plants to wilt before you water them. This stresses them and can cause leaf drop, flower bud drop and brown leaf edges. Apply water until some runs out of the pot’s drain holes and into the saucer underneath. Do not let the pot sit in a saucer full of water. Remove the water in the saucer if it is still there a few hours later. Houseplant containers should definitely have drain holes. There must be some way for excess water to drain out of the soil, otherwise we run the risk of the soil staying saturated, drowning the roots and encouraging root rot. Choose pots you find attractive and fit in well with your interior decor. Clay, plastic or other materials are all appropriate as long as they drain.

Energy efficiency upgrades that make good sense Surveys show that only about 15 percent of folks actually take steps to enhance the energy efficiency of their home. In most cases, people feel that energy efficiency improvements are too complicated or too expensive to tackle. However, there are several simple upgrades you can consider that won’t break your household budget. Following are a few: Lighting Compact fluorescent lightbulbs (CFLs) may look odd, but more and more homeowners are installing these energy-efficient lights. One CFL uses about 75 percent less energy and can save more than $40 over its lifetime than a traditional incandescent lightbulb, according to estimates by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR program. Some people do not like CFLs because of their color or quality of the light, but CFLs have improved since they were first introduced. In most lamps and fixtures, you probably won’t notice a difference using a CFL. Heating and Air Conditioning The U.S. Energy Information Ad-

ministration estimates that heating and air conditioning account for 22 percent of a typical home’s annual electric bill. While an air-source heat pump or a geothermal heat pump can be 20 percent to 45 percent more efficient than an existing central heating and cooling system, up-front installation costs are often a barrier. Simple solutions such as changing air filters at least every three months will increase airflow to rooms, increase the life of your central heating and cooling unit’s motor, and improve air quality. Sealing and insulating ductwork can be done in a weekend and result in energy savings of up to 20 percent. To lessen the amount of work that heating and cooling systems need to do,

Co-ops offer exciting and stable career opportunities In a bright spot for the nation’s economy, electric co-ops are recruiting and retaining talented people for jobs of all kinds. Some of the hiring is in response to Baby Boomer retirements— electric co-ops expect nearly 10 percent of lineworkers and almost 18 percent of engineers and operations staff will retire over the next five years, according to Russell Turner, principal, human capital issues, for the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA). The Center for Energy Workforce Development (CEWD), a non-profit group in Washington, D.C., that studies labor shortages in the utility and nuclear power industries, predicts that 46 percent of existing skilled technicians and 51 percent of engineers in the electric and natural gas utilities may need to be replaced by 2015 because of retirement or attrition. While the recent recession delayed some retirements, CEWD found only the timing of those retirements changed, not the estimated need for future replacements. While lineworkers are generally the most visible employees, it takes many more departments to effectively run an electric co-op. Electric distribution co-ops—those that directly serve you— employ more than 55,000 people. If you factor in power supply cooperatives and various support groups, like statewide associations, electric co-ops have more than 70,000 folks on their payrolls. Electric co-ops employ a median of 48 workers, with lineworkers comprising the largest single group of workers

– 17, on average – followed by administrative and clerical workers, which includes billing and account clerks, and engineering and operations employees, according to NRECA. The typical coop also has one IT professional and one communicator.

Walk around your house on a cold day and feel for drafts around exterior doors and windows, electric outlets, and entrance points for TV and telephone cables. In basements, target dryer vents, natural gas lines, or any opening in the wall. To fix leaks, apply caulk, spray foam, or weather stripping. Simple acts such as cooking outdoors on a hot summer day and drawing curtains closed to block the summer sun will keep the interior of your home cooler and reduce the amount of time your air conditoning units need to operate. Appliances and Electronics Gadgets and equipment that make life easier are also some of the largest electric users in our homes. When buying a new appliance, look for the ENERGY STAR label. ENERGY STAR products will use 10 percent to 15 percent less energy than non-certified items. Some states have even adopted ENERGY STAR holidays during which sales tax is waived on the purchase of qualifying ENRGY STAR-rated appliances. To keep appliances running more efficiently, try these tips: • Clean lint traps on dryers and don’t over-dry clothes.

• Replace worn refrigerator door gaskets to stop cool air from seeping out. • Clean refrigerator coils and keep refrigerators away from heat-generating appliances such as an oven. Many home electronics, like computers, TVs, and DVD players, consume power even when turned off. Called “vampire” or “phantom” load, the average home loses 8 percent of its monthly energy consumption to these devices. In fact, a full 75 percent of the power used to run home electronics is consumed when they’re turned off, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Plugging these items into a power strip or a smart strip and turning off the strip when not in use remains the best way to stop this loss of energy. Other Ideas The best energy efficiency improvements are often the easiest, such as turning lights off when leaving a room, sealing windows and doors, and cleaning refrigerator coils. To measure the success of any energy efficiency upgrades, big or small, first look at the payback period - the amount of time it takes for the improvement to pay for itself. Then consider your home’s comfort level. Check whether fixes you’ve made keep room temperatures level and if fewer drafts are found around doors, windows, and other openings like vents or outlets. Communications and marketing professionals inform consumer-members and the general public, through various publications and meetings, about the co-op’s community activities as well as products and services offered. Member services and energy services employees take care of the needs and concerns of members—handling phone calls, bill payments, and offering home energy audits and other energy-saving solutions. Staking technicians and engineers plot where new lines will be built, while purchasing employees maintain an inventory of equipment to keep the lights on and negotiate contracts. Dear Jim: I have an old central air-condition and electric furnace. I want to install a heat pump but cannot afford a geothermal one. What are the newest designs of standard heat pumps, and how do they work? - Candi B. Dear Candi: Heat pumps are becoming a more common alternative to central air conditioners no matter what type of existing heating system you have. This is because a heat pump can also heat, as well as cool, your house efficiently. The cost of electricity for heating and cooling a house, although it gradually increases as most prices do over time, is much less volatile than natural gas, oil, or propane. A geothermal heat pump is one of the most energy-efficient heating and cooling systems for any climate. Even though it provides a good long-term payback over its life on the investment, particularly in very hot or cold climates, the initial installation costs are considerably higher than for standard air-source models. Also, depending upon the yard and soil type, it may not applicable for every house. A standard air-source heat pump is basically a central air conditioner with a few extra parts. The outdoor unit looks

exactly the same as a central air conditioner. It is called a heat pump because it literally pumps heat out of your house (cooling mode) or into your house (heating mode) to or from the outdoor air around the outdoor compressor/condenser unit. During the summer in the cooling mode, it draws heat from the indoor air as it passes through the indoor evaporator coils. Through a refrigeration cycle identical to an air conditioner, it expels this heat outdoors. The cooling efficiency is rated by its SEER (seasonal energy efficiency ratio). A heat pump’s cooling efficiency is only slightly less than its similar central air conditioner model. During the winter, a reversing valve inside the heat pump outdoor unit switches position. This reverses the flow of the refrigerant throughout the entire system. Instead of running the cool refrigerant through the indoor coil, it runs the hot refrigerant indoors. The cold refrigerant is run outdoors where it draws heat from the outdoor. Since the refrigerant is colder than the outdoor air, is absorbs heat even though the outdoor air may feel cold to you. Heating efficiency is rated by HSPF (heating seasonal performance factor). As it gets colder outdoors, it becomes more difficult for the heat pump to draw heat from the cold outdoor air just as the heating needs of your house increase. At a certain point, the heat pump can no longer provide enough heat to keep your house warm, and the backup heating source comes on. Being a farmer is quite a gamble.

1 tablespoon mayonnaise on top of each sandwich and cook in medium skillet over medium heat or in panini press, mayonnaise-side down. Arrange brick* on sandwiches in skillet and cook 2 minutes or until the bottoms are golden brown. Remove brick, then evenly spread tops of sandwiches with remaining 2 tablespoons mayonnaise; turn over. Arrange brick on sandwiches and cook an additional 2 minutes or until bottoms are golden brown and cheese is melted. Cut in half and serve warm. *Wrap brick in heavy-duty aluminum foil to use as a press. Chicken Muffuletta with Spicy Olive Relish Mayonnaise • Roasted red peppers (from a jar), drained • 1/2 or 1 jalapeño chile, chopped • 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped • 1/2 cup Hellmann’s or Best Foods Real Mayonnaise • 2 tbsps sherry vinegar • 3/4 cup prepared olive relish • 1/4 cup coarsely chopped fresh flat leaf parsley • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts • 2 tbsps olive oil • 16 1/4-inch slices provolone cheese • 1 large round loaf of bread, sliced in half crosswise • Aluminum foil • 2 bricks or a cast iron pan and a few heavy cans Combine red peppers, jalapeño, garlic, mayonnaise and vinegar in a food

processor and process until smooth. Scrape the mixture into a medium bowl and fold in the olive relish and parsley. Set aside. Heat the grill to high or the grill pan over high heat. Brush chicken breasts with oil on both sides and sprinkle with salt and pepper, if desired. Grill for 4 to 5 minutes per side until golden brown and just cooked through. Remove from the grill, let rest 5 minutes then slice into 1/4-inch slices on the bias. Spread some of mayonnaise mixture on the bottom half of the bread, add half of the cheese, half of the chicken and repeat with the remaining ingredients (mayonnaise mixture, cheese and chicken in that order). Spread the cut-side of the top of the loaf with more mayonnaise mixture and place, mayonnaiseside down, on chicken. Wrap tightly in foil, place on baking sheet and place bricks or a heavy cast iron pan on top. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour (to allow the flavors to meld) or overnight.
