n this column last month, I talked about how we appreciate our readers sharing recipes from their kitchens, and that our reader recipe page really is a celebration of our co-op community’s culinary talents. We take great pride in accurately presenting each and every recipe.

Unfortunately, also in last month’s issue, we botched a recipe. Hazel Hendrickson graciously shared her Shortbread Cookie recipe with us, and we thought it was the perfect addition to the two-page holiday baking spread. However, the published recipe had errors in the ingredient list.

Hazel is a well-regarded and award-winning baker. Her corrected recipe is below. My sincerest apologies to Hazel and for the confusion our misprint may have caused.

Shortbread Cookies Hazel Hendrickson, Viroqua 1 lb butter, room temperature 3/4 cup sugar 2 tsp vanilla extract 4-1/2 cups flour Sugar or chopped nuts for decorating Beat butter, 3/4 cup sugar, and vanilla together with an electric mixer until well-blended and creamy. Fold in the flour and mix together until workable.

Divide the dough into 3 equal parts and roll into logs.

Each log may be rolled in sugar or nuts to coat the outside.

Slice logs into 1/4-inch-thick cookies and bake at 375 degrees until light brown.

NEWS BRIEFS Erickson Recognized with ACE Award Mary Erickson, who retired a year ago as the longest-running staffer in the history of WECA, was also presented with the ACE Award, the organization’s top honor. As associate editor of the Wisconsin Energy Cooperative News, Erickson was a respected leader and mentor for cooperative communicators and a valued partner for cooperative leaders across the state.

Cooperative Hero Award Goes to Tuszke At the awards ceremony held in conjunction with the Wisconsin Electric Cooperative Association (WECA) Annual Meeting, recipients of the Cooperative Hero Award, Herman C. Potthast Award, N.F. Leifer Memorial Journalism Award, and Ally of Cooperative Electrification Awards (ACE) were officially honored. Larson Named ACE Award Recipient

Rock Energy Cooperative President and CEO Shane Larson was presented the 2025 Ally of Cooperative Electrification (ACE) Award, WECA’s highest honor. The ACE Award is presented each year as recognition of outstanding contributions to Wisconsin’s electric cooperatives.

Since joining Rock Energy in 2000, Larson has been instrumental in driving the co-op’s growth and innovation. He led the effort to acquire territory from Alliant Energy in 2005, quadrupling its membership and worked to secure a minor ownership share when American Transmission Company (ATC) was formed in 2001. He also recently oversaw the partial acquisition of Riverside Gas Generation Plant in Janesville.

Central Wisconsin Electric Cooperative Journeyman Lineman Chris Tuszke was honored with the Cooperative Hero Award.

After finding himself assisting first responders at the scene of a fatal crash in April 2025, his actions prompted the co-op to build on its relationship with law enforcement and others to promote safety and ensure field crews know what to do in crisis situations.

Orysen Selected for Potthast Award Price Electric Cooperative Operations Manager Ben Orysen was selected as the recipient of the 2025 Herman C. Potthast Award. The Job Training & Safety Committee selected Orysen for outstanding service, dedication, leadership, and cooperation, with an emphasis on safety.

Energy policy can feel a lot like that—unpredictable, fast-changing, and occasionally requiring tools you didn’t know you needed.

PICKING WINNERS AND SOLAR LOSERS HOW PROPOSED LEGISLATION WOULD COST-SHIFT COMMUNITY SOLAR TO BENEFIT PRIVATE COMPANIES

I

n 2014, President Barack Obama was in his second term as President, Morgan Wallen competed on The Voice, DoorDash celebrated its first year in business, and Apple released the iPhone 5. That was also the year Vernon Electric Cooperative launched the groundbreaking Westby Community Solar Farm. The 305 kW, 1,001-panel clean power garden, located at Vernon’s headquarters in Westby, was history in the making.

“We are excited to have constructed the first community-owned solar project in the state of Wisconsin,” former Vernon Electric CEO Joe McDonald (retired) said at the time. “We know this will be a valuable local energy solution for our members.”

It was, and it still is. The co-op offered members the option of buying $600 panels in exchange for electric bill credits, and they jumped at the chance. The rural electric co-op’s solar offering sold out in less than two weeks and continues to offer savings to those who

signed on, while providing enough clean energy to power 30 homes. It was a win-win, and just the beginning of Vernon’s historic efforts to embrace clean-energy options for all of its members.

Today, some Wisconsin legislators are proposing community solar legislation that would expand the concept. Under Assembly Bill 493/ Senate Bill 559, any private, for-profit company would be able to build a solar garden and sell subscriptions to home and business owners. The investor-owned utility that serves the area would be required to issue bill credits to its customers on behalf of the unregulated solar company.

Under the bill, those who subscribe to the solar company’s project would be allowed to use monthly credits to reduce their utility bill to no less than $20, and excess credits could be carried over for two years. The utility would be required to purchase accumulated credits from the solar provider.

The authors of the legislation, Senator and President Pro Tempore Patrick Testin (R-Stevens Point) and Representative and Assistant Majority Leader Scott Krug (R-Rome), tout the plan as a free-market option that will guarantee lower utility bills for subscribers.

But here’s the problem. Under this legislation, non-subscribers would have to fund the costs related to all of the complexities of maintaining the energy system, from infrastructure

and technology upgrades to storm recovery and power restoration.

“Subscriber credits” would shift the cost of maintaining poles, wires, substations, and generation reserves—costs essential to everyone’s reliability—to those who do not subscribe.

“This is a cost shift, not a cost savings,” Joe Mesec, Wisconsin Electric Cooperative Association (WECA) director of government relations, explained. “Solar developers get guaranteed profits.

Wisconsin ratepayers get the bill.”

Under the proposal, a private, outof-state company potentially backed by foreign investors could profit from electricity sales, without employing a single lineworker, because once the solar garden is built, the subscribers are enrolled, and the utility has facilitated the interconnection (as required by the bill) the solar-seller’s job is essentially done, except for collecting the “mailbox money.”

While solar energy is a valuable part of a diverse energy mix, an influx of community solar still does not generate power when the sun isn’t shining, which means utilities must still build and maintain baseload power plants and transmission, as people expect their lights, heat pumps, and electronics to work,

The Westby Community Solar Program is the first community-owned solar facility built in the state of Wisconsin.

The project broke ground in April 2014 and became operational June 2014. In Westby, Vernon Electric Cooperative was also the first in the region to use sheep to manage vegetation (a practice known as agrivoltaics) at the community solar farm.

FEATURE even at night. More small-scale solar may reduce the amount of overall generation needed from coal, natural gas, and nuclear while the sun is shining, but it does not reduce the need or the cost to have and maintain those facilities to ensure electricity is readily available when it’s not.

Proponents of the community solar legislation claim it empowers local governments, as they would have the authority to approve or deny the community solar proposals.

The solar projects would not be regulated by the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin (PSC) and

would not be subject to any oversight at all, beyond consumer protections that already exist in state law.

The bill caps total program size at 1,750 megawatts statewide and sunsets new enrollment after 2035, additions that proponents hope will bring more support to the effort that has already failed to pass in the state twice.

But WECA, along with the investor-owned and municipal utility groups, still believe it’s an unfair deal for most Wisconsinites.

“In essence, this bill privatizes the benefits of solar while socializing the costs of reliability,” added Rob Richard, WECA president and CEO. Driven by a vigorous solar industry, similar legislation has been adopted in other states, including Minnesota, leading to legal challenges and exposing the real impact of the cost-shift. According to a study conducted for the Minnesota Department of Commerce, that state’s community solar program has produced $917 million in costs for nonsubscribers. utility-scale solar. Those excess costs add roughly $7 per month to each residential customer’s bill.

“We’re not against solar,” Richard said. “We’re against the construct that chooses winners and losers. Under this proposal, anyone who doesn’t want to, or can’t afford to buy into the privatized community solar program will be picking up the extra costs, at a time when electric bills are increasing across the country, and electric cooperatives are working so hard to keep those costs down for members.”

As written, the proposed community solar legislation only applies to investor-owned utilities, not electric cooperatives, but WECA and member cooperatives are urging lawmakers to reject it, because once that door is opened, it’s hard to go back, and cooperative members could be the next to feel the impact.

Since Vernon Electric launched the first community solar garden in the state just over ten years ago, many other electric cooperatives have followed suit, including Pierce Pepin Cooperative Services and Clark Electric Cooperative, with other locally owned solar projects tailored to their memberships.

Vernon Electric continues to be a pioneer in the community solar

world. In 2023, the co-op launched Bluff Prairie Community Solar, the fifth community solar project on its lines. They dedicated a portion of the 1.5-megawatt array to the “Energize Wisconsin” program, a first-of-itskind initiative that offers community solar bill credits to income-eligible households, at no cost to them. The program is a partnership between Couleecap, the Wisconsin Public Service Commission’s Office of Energy Innovation, and Vernon Electric, and was born of outside-thebox thinking to ensure members of all incomes can access community solar.

“Safe, reliable, and affordable is in the mission statements of most electric cooperatives,” said Craig Buros, general manager and CEO of Vernon Electric Cooperative. “We take a very innovative approach to energy supply, but any project we do must check all three boxes. It must be safe for our lineworkers and the public, it must be a supplement to our energy mix without reducing reliability, and it must not increase cost to the members.

Bluff Prairie and its Energize Wisconsin program are another example of community solar done right, in a way that is a benefit to all. No government mandates, no

profits to unregulated entities, no predetermined inflated rates, and no unfair cost-shifts.

DISTRIBUTION AUTOMATION KEEPS POWER FLOWING, OUTAGES AT BAY

With distributed automation technology and its analysis of network data, co-ops can see their system’s assets, how they are operating, and what energy resources are on their power lines to support better quality service and reliability. Distributed automation can also save electric co-ops and their members money by reducing inspection time for field apparatus such as transformers, substations, and power lines.

S

taying online uninterrupted by a power glitch seems more important than ever, and today it’s even more possible, thanks to advanced energy technologies that can instantly rearrange electricity flows to areas hit by storms or other disturbances.

Distribution Automation, also known as DA, is a powerful set of tools that includes automated sensors, communications systems, and data analytics, enabling electric utilities to monitor power lines, field equipment, and generation facilities in real time.

Equipped with these DA tools, electric cooperatives can detect an outage and isolate it in real time from their control rooms before sending field crews to repair the damaged power lines.

“Distribution automation helps electric co-ops deliver reliable, high-quality service to members when today’s world demands it most,” says Ravindra Singh, senior principal of DA for the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association.

Some call DA a “self-healing electric grid” because its application, such as FLISR––fault location, isolation, and service restoration––allows the network of power lines and substations to reconfigure in response to disruptions automatically.

Here’s a snapshot of how it works.

When power lines are damaged or shorted by storms, critters, or some disaster, DA systems can reroute electricity from the power source to unaffected infrastructure. This allows electric service to continue uninterrupted to a community that would otherwise suffer an outage.

DA not only helps prevent outages, but this suite of technologies can also save electric co-ops and their members money by reducing inspection time for field apparatus such as transformers, substations, and power lines.

With real-time field measurements from DA technologies, a co-op gains situational awareness of its electricity network and can minimize unnecessary maintenance activities, truck rolls, and crew dispatches to examine lines, locate damage, and make repairs.

“Power distribution grids are evolving from being a passive network to a more active network,” says Singh. “With DA technology and its analysis of network data, co-ops can see their system’s assets, how they are operating, and what energy resources are on their power lines to support better quality service and reliability.”

Without DA, a co-op may not know where its members are adding electric vehicles, rooftop solar, residential batteries, generators, and other distribution resources, or where they are operating them on its system. This can be a challenge when managing peak demand and curtailing energy to sustain reliability.

Electricity demand is only going to grow because of new types of loads, such as data centers, crypto mining, and EVs, according to industry forecasts. So, it makes sense for utilities to optimize the use of their existing infrastructure or equipment to keep costs in check.

With DA, electric co-ops can better manage and grow their systems, respond to crises safely and efficiently, and ensure their members enjoy reliable electricity without hiccups.

LOOKING AHEAD TO 2026

A

s we look ahead to 2026, Eau Claire Energy Cooperative is preparing for a year centered on reliability, community engagement, and continued investment in the future.

January is always a natural time to share what’s on the horizon, and while I can’t cover everything here, I’m glad to give you a glimpse of the work and opportunities ahead.

Out in the field, our crews will continue the regularly scheduled powerline rebuilds outlined in our system work plan. These projects help replace aging infrastructure, strengthen the grid, and reduce the likelihood of outages. Members will also see vegetation management crews throughout the year, with spraying in parts of the Ludington, and Cadott area and trimming schedule in parts of the Hallie, Layfayette, Seymour, and Washington areas of ECEC service territory. Routine pole inspections will take place in parts of the Lincoln, Washington, and Seymour areas, and underground inspections will take place in parts of the Washingtion and Pleasant Valley areas of our service territory. All members affected by these will receive

communication prior to inspections or vegetation management. These efforts may not be visible day to day, but they play a major role in keeping electricity safe and reliable for everyone.

We also look forward to gathering with members at two of our biggest events of the year: our Annual Meeting on March 17, 2026, and our Member Appreciation Event on October 10, 2026. These events are meaningful opportunities to connect face-to-face, share updates, and hear directly from the members we serve. We hope you’ll join us and take part in the cooperative community that makes Eau Claire Energy Cooperative stronger.

Next year is also an election year, and ECEC will continue to advocate for issues that impact the energy industry and the members who rely on us. We will engage with policymakers, provide information on the challenges and opportunities facing electric cooperatives, and work to ensure that member interests are represented. As part of this effort, we will again host our Candidates Energy Forum on October 6, 2026, giving local candidates the opportunity to discuss energy-related

issues that affect our region.

Investing in the next generation continues to be a priority for us. Our Youth Ambassador Program meets monthly during the school year and provides local students with hands-on opportunities to learn about energy, cooperative leadership, and community involvement. Statewide programs like the Youth Leadership Congress and the Electric Cooperative Youth Tour to Washington, D.C., offer students additional opportunities to grow, learn, and broaden their horizons. We also continue to support local member-students through our scholarship program, which helps them take their next steps after graduation. In the coming year, we look forward to expanding these opportunities and continuing to support programs that build strong future leaders for our cooperative and our communities.

As we move into 2026, the work we have planned, whether in the field, in our communities, or in classrooms, reflects our commitment to our members. We are grateful for your continued trust and engagement, and we look forward to the progress and opportunities the new year will bring.

1 large yellow onion, diced 1/2 large green bell pepper, diced 1/2 large yellow bell pepper, diced 1/2 large red bell pepper, diced 3 stalks celery, sliced or diced 2 garlic cloves, minced 1–2 jalapeños, seeded and diced 1 pint cherry tomatoes 3 Tbsp olive oil, divided 1/2 tsp salt 1/2 tsp black pepper 1 Tbsp Cajun seasoning blend 1 link (13.5 oz) Andouille sausage, sliced 1 lb large shrimp, peeled and deveined 1 lb linguine noodles, cooked according to package directions 1–2 lemons, sliced in very thin wedges 2 green onions, sliced 1 bunch fresh parsley, chopped 20

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Line a large 13-x18-inch sheet pan with parchment paper. In a large bowl, combine onion, bell peppers, celery, garlic, jalapeños, and tomatoes with two tablespoons olive oil, salt, and pepper until evenly combined. Spread out evenly on the pan into a single layer; add slices of Andouille sausage. Roast in the oven for 15–20 minutes or until vegetables are tender and start to get a goldenbrown char on their edges. While the vegetable and sausage mixture is in the oven, toss shrimp with the Cajun seasoning and prepare the linguine noodles.

When ready, remove the baking sheet from the oven, place shrimp on top of the vegetable and sausage mixture in a single layer, then top with half the lemon wedges. Return to the oven and cook for approx. 5–8 minutes or until the shrimp are cooked through and an opaque pink. Serve sheet pan ingredients over linguine garnished with green onions and parsley with remaining fresh lemon wedges on the side. Makes 4–6 servings.

2 yellow onions, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch wedges 1/2 head of purple cabbage, cut into wedges 2 red potatoes, cut into 1/2-inch wedges 1 small butternut squash, peeled and diced into 1/2-inch pieces 1 lb Brussels sprouts, halved Extra virgin olive oil Salt and black pepper, to taste 1-1/2 cups quinoa, cooked according to package directions 1 Tbsp tahini Juice from 1/2 of a lemon 1 tsp Dijon mustard 1/2 to 1 tsp maple syrup 2 avocados, peeled and sliced Fresh parsley for garnish Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Line a large 13-x18-inch sheet pan with parchment paper. Place the vegetables in a single layer on the sheet pan; drizzle with olive oil and season with salt and black pepper. Roast vegetables for 40 minutes or until tender; add more salt and pepper, if needed.

While the vegetables are roasting, cook quinoa according to package directions.

Make the tahini sauce in a small bowl by whisking together tahini, lemon juice, mustard, and maple syrup until smooth. To assemble the Buddha bowls, spoon quinoa into bowls, add roasted vegetables, and garnish with avocado and parsley. Drizzle tahini sauce over each bowl and serve. Makes 4–6 servings.

4 bone-in ribeye pork chops, 1-inch thick 2 tsp dried rosemary, crushed 1 tsp salt 1/2 tsp ground black pepper 5 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil

1 head of broccoli, cut into florets 1 lb small Yukon Gold potatoes, quartered 1 small red onion, cut into 8 wedges 12 whole mini peppers

Preheat the oven to 450 degrees. In a large bowl, combine salt, pepper, rosemary, and oil; mix well. Rub pork chops with 2 tablespoons of the oil mixture, then place pork chops on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Toss broccoli florets, cut potatoes, onion wedges, and whole peppers with remaining oil mixture and spread out on a separate sheet pan lined with parchment paper. Place pork chops on the top oven rack and the vegetables on the bottom rack. Cook for 18–20 minutes or until pork chops reach an internal temperature of 145 degrees*. Remove cooked pork chops to a serving plate.

Allow vegetables to continue cooking for 10 more minutes. Pour the pork pan juices into a sauté pan over medium-high heat. Cook to reduce the juices for 2–4 minutes, then pour over pork chops. Remove roasted vegetables from the oven when the potatoes are tender and the broccoli has a little bit of char.

Serve with pork chops and enjoy! Makes 4 servings. NOTES: *Whole muscle pork cuts are safe to eat when cooked to 145 degrees and allowed to rest for 3 minutes.

Black walnut sheet cake is a classic American dessert with a rich history and a distinctive, bold flavor. Often enjoyed during the fall and holiday seasons, black walnuts contribute a unique depth and earthiness to the cake, differentiating it from traditional walnut cakes.

CAKE

2 cups sugar 2 cups flour 1 tsp baking soda 1/2 tsp salt 2 sticks margarine 4 Tbsp cocoa 1 cup water 1/2 cup buttermilk 2 eggs

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Sift dry ingredients into a medium-sized mixing bowl. In a saucepan, melt margarine, then whisk with cocoa and water.

Bring mixture to a rapid boil, then carefully pour over dry ingredients. Add buttermilk and eggs, stir well, then pour into a cookie sheet pan with edges.

Bake for 15–20 minutes.

2 eggs, lightly beaten 2 Tbsp ketchup 1 Tbsp minced onion 1/3 cup quick-cooking oats 1/2 tsp seasoned salt Salt and pepper, to taste 1/2 lb ground beef Cooking spray

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. In a bowl, combine all meatloaf ingredients except beef and mix well. Crumble ground beef into the egg/oat mixture and mix thoroughly. Coat 4 cups of a muffin tin with baking spray and fill 3/4 full of the meat mixture, pressing lightly.

TOPPING

4 tsp ketchup 4 Tbsp shredded cheddar cheese, divided Spread 1 teaspoon of ketchup onto each tin with meat mixture and bake for 15–20 minutes. Sprinkle 1 tablespoon of shredded cheese onto each filled tin and return to oven for another 5 minutes. Let stand for 5 minutes before removing from muffin tins. May be served with fried or au gratin potatoes.

SAUERKRAUT CASSEROLE RECIPE COURTESY OF SUSAN ANDERSON, MASON 1 lb ground beef* 1 onion, chopped (optional) Dash poultry seasoning Salt and pepper, to taste 12 oz sauerkraut, drained 4 cups prepared instant mashed potatoes 2–4 Tbsp butter 3–4 dashes paprika Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Brown beef (and venison, if using) with onion, poultry seasoning, salt, and pepper; drain and place on the bottom of a 1-quart baking dish. Layer sauerkraut on top of seasoned meat and spoon mashed potatoes on top of sauerkraut.

Dot with butter and add additional salt and pepper if desired. Bake for approx. 35–40 minutes until heated through and light brown.

Sprinkle paprika on top for a little added color and serve. For a large group, the recipe may be doubled or tripled. *NOTE: Beef may also be halved and combined with a half-pound of ground venison, if desired.

BETHANY’S BANANA BREAD RECIPE COURTESY OF BETHANY GOETHE, COLEMAN 1/2 cup olive oil or oil of choice 1 cup brown sugar 3 beaten eggs 3 crushed bananas 1 Tbsp vanilla extract 1/2 tsp butter flavoring (optional) 1 tsp cinnamon 2 cups bread flour 1 tsp salt 1 tsp baking soda Mix together the oil, brown sugar, eggs, crushed bananas, vanilla extract, and butter flavoring, if using. Stir in remaining dry ingredients. Bake in a prepared 6-x10-inch loaf pan at 350 degrees for approx. 45–60 minutes, or in a larger loaf pan for 1 hour and 15 minutes. It is done if a knife inserted into the center comes out clean. Yield: 1 loaf. NOTES: Dark/over-ripe bananas tend to work the best for banana bread as they are sweeter.

For a speedy clean up, line the baking pan with aluminum foil and baking spray. If you plan to freeze it, let the bread cool completely before placing in freezer. May be frozen for up to 4–6 months.

uilts are more than just warmth on a cold winter’s night. According to Sue Kudronowicz, quilts have the ability to hold memories and tell a story. As the volunteer coordinator of the Walls of Wittenberg’s (WOW) annual quilt show, she has a true appreciation for the art form.

WISC NSIN FAVORITES “I’m not a quilter,” said Kudronowicz, a member of Central Wisconsin Electric Cooperative.

“I probably wouldn’t be your first choice for running a quilt show if you saw my sewing.”

But what Kudronowicz does bring is an artist’s eye. “That might actually be an asset because I look at the overall display of the quilts and the art part of it,” she said. “I don’t get too wrapped up in how many stitches per inch a quilt has.”

She also appreciates a quilt’s ability to tell a story. The theme of this year’s show, held at the WOWSPACE in Wittenberg, is “A Patchwork of Memories.”

“When you sleep under a quilt, you sleep under a blanket of love,” said Kudronowicz of the show’s tagline. “People need to know that yes, you can go to Target and buy a blanket much cheaper, but these are labors of love.”

Kudronowicz recalls a quilt entered that had a John Deere theme.

It was created in honor of the quilter’s father, a farmer, who had just passed away. Another quilt was created by a woman who was in an all-girl band in the ‘60s and ‘70s that depicted music through the years. Another was created by a quilting group in honor of three of the group’s members who had passed away in the previous year.

Kudronowicz stresses that quilts are generally not created just for the show; rather, they are inspirations of their own. They don’t even have to be new.

“My grandmother hand-sewed a quilt in the 1930s… I put that one in last year in memory of my grandma,” she said.

Walls of Wittenberg When

Highway 29 bypassed Wittenberg years ago, the small town faced a challenge: how to bring people

back. One visionary, Lois Smith, had an answer—art. In 2005, she helped launch Walls of Wittenberg, a volunteer-driven organization dedicated to revitalizing the community through creativity. “Their

The Walls of Wittenberg’s annual quilt show is themed “A Patchwork of Memories” and runs January 17, 18, 24, 25, 31, and February 1, 2026, at the WOWSPACE in Wittenberg. Quilts from past years’ shows indeed hold memories. One quilt celebrated music through the decades, created by a woman who once played in an all-girl band in the ’60s and ’70s. Another honored three quilting guild members who passed away in the same year, with a heartfelt ceremony for their families. It is now on display at the Hatley Public Library. The third told a farmer’s story—a John Deere-themed quilt stitched in memory of a father who had recently passed away.

Over the past two decades, Walls of Wittenberg has transformed the town into an artistic destination. The highlight and biggest draw are the vibrant outdoor murals that line the streets. They depict the town’s local heritage and imagination.

But the creativity doesn’t stop at the walls. At the heart of this movement is WOWSPACE, a historic building turned cultural hub.

“WOWSPACE is actually an old building that has been renovated,” Kudronowicz said. “It’s got the tin ceilings, hardwood floors, big high windows, and tall doors. It is the most beautiful space.” Originally constructed in the late 1800s, the building was restored about 15 years ago and now serves as the venue for nearly all Walls of Wittenberg events—from art exhibits and concerts to theatrical performances and, of course, the annual quilt show.

The space itself feels like a work of art.

flood the gallery with light, creating an inviting atmosphere for artists and visitors alike. “If you ever get to Wittenberg, you should stop,” Kudronowicz said. “It’s amazing.”

Community Support All activities associated with the Walls of Wittenberg group, including the quilt show, are a true community effort—one that pulled Kudronowicz in.

“My husband and I moved to the Wittenberg area about two and a half years ago, and I got invited to go to one of the [WOW] meetings and become a member. There’s such a wonderful group of people that do all this work that I joined the group.”

The annual quilt show isn’t powered by paid staff—it thrives on volunteer energy and local generosity. “It is all volunteer,” says Kudronowicz, who organizes the event. “I could not do this by myself. My name’s on here because

“They’ve been great to sponsor us and help us.”

Unique Twist Unlike traditional

quilt shows, Wittenberg’s event puts the power in visitors’ hands. “We do a people’s choice. We don’t hire somebody to come in and judge the quilts,” said Kudronowicz. Guests vote for their favorites, making the experience interactive and fun.

Prizes are just as special as the quilts themselves—handmade baskets, embroidered ribbons, fabric store gift cards, and even chocolate, because, as Kudronowicz laughs, “you can never have too much chocolate.”

Beyond voting, visitors can admire quilts of all sizes, from baby blankets to wall hangings, and even enter raffles for a chance to take home a quilt.

“I think quilting is evolving… It’s going to have a resurgence like knitting and crocheting,” said Kudronowicz.

by Beaver Creek Reserve. New anglers welcome! This course will cover the basics of ice fishing and allow plenty of practice time. Dress in warm layers and prepare to be out on the ice. Bring an ice fishing rod if you have one, limited poles will be available. No experience necessary, family participation is encouraged. An active fishing license is required for ages 16+. Children under 16 must have an adult present; all ages are welcome. Cost is $12 for members and $15 for non-members.
