Welcome to the latest edition of the Note.

I hope you have all had loads of fun since we last spoke and are excited about Summer getting closer! I’m delighted to be here to tell you about more fun things coming up in the next few months.

For the youngsters, our latest Mini-Music term kicked off in March which I hope you are enjoying but for any one still interested in joining the Mini-Music adventure booking will open on April 26th for Young Maestros. This will be a priority booking period just for you so if you haven’t joined Rebecca and the Mini Music gang before, don’t miss out! We are also delighted to hold another set of performances for Children with Autistic Spectrum Conditions where children and their parents can use all their senses to experience music and sounds in an inspiring new way. This time around we’ll be travelling to Afrikaa! Other fantastically fun workshops will include our Stringalong Workshop in June and the return of the wonderful Whistleblast Quartet in July.

For those slightly older budding songwriters amongst you check out the details of how you can learn your craft in Songschool. You’ll also have the chance to hear from BellX1 and Printerclips, Paul Noonan, who will inspire you talking all things song-writing. Read on to find out about all of these events and more. I also invited one of my friends around for tea so we could learn what it’s like to become a professional musician in my interesting interview with Aisling. Take her advice; Practice: practice, practice; get out and play and get your friends and family involved too!

AfriKaa!: for Children with Autistic Spectrum Conditions

from 3 months from 12 months 2 & 3 year olds 3 & 4 year olds 4 & 5 year olds 5-8 year olds

MiniMusic is an action-packed music workshop experience for babies and young children aged 3 months to 8 years old. Each workshop is carefully designed to suit each of the age groups – they are fun and accessible with foot-tapping, memorable tunes!

Each of the MiniMusic sessions is 30 minutes long and is led by a highly trained workshop facilitator, using tuned and untuned percussion instruments and of course the one instrument we all have – the voice.

The sessions are held over three terms, each term lasting 10 weeks – so there is a real sense of development for all participants.

Our March term has already started but we will have more terms you can join us for later in the year.

AfriKaa! is a multi-sensory installation and experimental concert by Slavek Kwi. Designed for and dedicated to children with autism, the sound journey allows children to move freely through the rich soundscape of South Africa’s Limpopo Valley. Experience the wonder of the waterholes and riparian woodland, where hippos, crocodiles, leopards and bat-eared foxes may appear at any moment. Feel the march of many tiny feet. The tribal gathering is here!

Interludes of classical music will add even more magic to the experience.

The composition was created from Slavek’s own field-recordings from Mmabolela Nature Reserve. AfriKaa! is the second project in a series of multichannel installations, following in the footsteps of Ama-Zone.

Visitors to AfriKaa! are asked to be present for the start of the session for a brief welcome and introduction, but are then free to wander in and out as they please.

‘Songschool: Paul Noonan In Conversation

‘Stringalong’ Young Maestro Strings Workshop

Join Peter Baxter, Director of Songschool, in conversation with Paul Noonan from Bell X1.

Paul and Peter will explore how songs evolve, what their favourite song is and that ultimate, unanswerable question… what makes a great song?

Paul Noonan is a member of the National Concert Hall’s pilot Artist Writing Space programme. Paul will debut his new album of pared back collaborations, Printer Clips, on May 24 in the National Concert Hall.

Keep an eye on our website for announcements of further members of the Artist Writing Space who might drop in to join Paul and Peter on May 17.

Songschool will run week long summer courses at the National Concert Hall in June and July, more information on www.nch.ie

2.15pm (4-8 year olds) 3.20pm (9-12 year olds) Fusing storytelling, music making and composition with arts and crafts ‘Stringalong’ introduces children to the instruments and sounds of the string family.

Instrument demonstrations and storytelling enable each child to visualise the difference between each instrument.

Each child will be given the opportunity to compose their own piece of music during the session as well as making their own string instrument with twine, string, bamboo and cardboard.

Please remember to bring a shoebox and pencil! This interactive hands-on session last 60 minutes.

Tall Tales with the WhistleBlast Quartet

Songschool is for secondary school students who are interested in writing and recording songs, performing them at a concert, making a video, learning about music technology, and meeting people who love music as much as they do... not to mention forming bands and having fun!

All Songschool students receive a copy of their songs and their videos, and a Songschool certificate of participation.

Junior Songschool is chance for 8-12 year olds to spend some time at the National Concert Hall, learning about writing, performing and recording songs. Make music and new friends!

A MUSICAL LIFE: Mr Clef gets to know some friends

C: SO, What made you decide to play The Harp above all the others in an orchestra?

A.E.: I started to learn the harp at the age of 6. My mum knew my first harp teacher’s mum. She knew I was very musical because I sang before I spoke so she begged my harp teacher to give me a lesson just to see how I got on… aaaand I loved it instantly.

Aine (Ní Dhubhghaill) was so nice to me that I was immediately hooked. I remember looking at the harp on the back of a ten pence coin and being in awe of it.

C: How often did you practice when you were in school?

Clef: Tell my Maestro’s a little about yourself Aisling?

Aisling Ennis: My name’s Aisling, I hail from Rathcoole in West County Dublin. I studied all over really, initially in London at Guildhall and the Royal Academy of Music, but I returned to Dublin to the Royal Irish Academy of Music and then also studied at DIT. After my performance studies I did a Masters in Arts Management and Cultural Policy in UCD and I just completed a PGCE in Primary Education… So I am a bit of a learn-aholic! I have two German Shepherds call Bronson and Marley and a donkey called Dolores and I love cheese…the smellier the better.

A.E.: I practiced every day - or certainly most days. Sometimes I wouldn’t be ‘in the mood’ and if I could go back in time, I would practice on those days too. It took me a long time to learn how to practice in a smart way - in other words, how to use my time well. Nowadays, I do a lot of playing in a lot of different situations. Often, I will already know the music so I won’t necessarily need to learn new notes. On these days, I play for fun. :) And yes practice CAN be fun! I promise...

C: What is your favourite thing about being a professional musician?

A.E.: The music, the people, the many different and exciting situations that I find myself in each day and week, being lucky enough to share music with colleagues - many of whom are my close friends from when I studied and from when I played with the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland.

C: Has anything funny or embarrassing ever happened to you whilst performing?

A.E.: I was performing with my group Affinití in a concert when, in the middle of a song called Adelaide’s Aria from the contemporary opera The Enchanted Pig (which is a hilarious song about a bride to be throwing a terrible tantrum!) a bass string on the harp snapped! Bass strings make a WHOPPING big thump when they break… I was MORTIFIED, but, these things happen. Especially when you play an instrument with 47 strings!

C: Who inspires you as a musician?

A.E.: I am inspired by many different people. I am particularly inspired by people who really express themselves in their music. I love when musicians ‘wear their heart on their sleeves’ as they play.

Sometimes this might be a world class soloist, or a harp student, or a busker on the street or one of the members of the Blow The Dust Orchestra, who rehearse here in the NCH. Outside of musicians who inspire me, people who are brave in their honesty inspire me to be honest in my music making and encourage me to wear my heart on my sleeve a little more

C: Who would you love to play with?

A.E.: I would LOVE to perform with U2! I like the thought of a harp on stage giving the Edge an ould run for his money!

There are so many stunning orchestras I haven’t performed with but we are blessed with gorgeous orchestras here too and I am lucky enough to play with them when the programme allows. :)

C: What advice would you have for a young person who dreams of being a musician when they grow-up?

A.E.: Think big. He/she who aims for the moon gets farther than he who aims for a tree… Practice is of course a very important part of the journey to becoming a musician. True, people say ‘practice makes perfect’ but actually it also makes you closer with your instrument and your music - aaaand, if you wanna be a musician then your instrument is kinda like your best friend, so the more time you spend getting to know and understand your best friend, the better for the relationship!

Its also really important to play in front of people as often as possible. Musicians have to be comfortable with that, and for some people it can take more practice. It CAN be scary having to sit in front of strangers and wear your heart on your sleeve, but this is when the magic happens! I was also very lucky to play with many youth orchestras from a very early age. Even though I found it daunting at first, it was SUCH brilliant experience. I recommend EVERY young person learning music to join a group, get out and share your music! It is the best way to get better and to share in the joy of music!

Look up people who play the kind of music you would like to play and read about them, read about how hard they worked for their music and listen to their music and learn their music. A wise teacher once said, the ONLY place where success comes BEFORE work is in the dictionary. In other words, people who realise their dreams work towards them every single day.

The Music for Fun Orchestra are back for yet another fast paced, high octane concert following the hugely successful Music for Fun concert in Sept 2013.

This family-friendly concert provides a fun and enlightening approach to a wide range of music and will introduce young and old to a variety of musical styles.

The programme will include popular classics, current chart topping singles and some wellknown movie and TV themes including children’s favourite princess and superhero songs.

As always, the energetic Music for Fun team will fill the National Concert Hall with fun, laughter and inspiration for music.
