The National Ballet of Canada’s creative home is on the sacred and traditional territories of the Anishinabek, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Haudenosaunee and Huron-Wendat. We acknowledge that Toronto is covered by Treaty 13 signed with the Mississaugas of the Credit, and the Williams Treaty signed with multiple Mississaugas and Chippewa peoples. We support the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. The National Ballet of Canada is grateful to have the opportunity to work, dance and create on these lands and we thank the past, present and future caretakers of this land for their stewardship. The land we are performing on today has been home to dance and storytelling traditions of Indigenous people since time immemorial. As we celebrate the return of our beloved art form, we recognize that colonialism and intergenerational trauma has silenced Indigenous artists for far too long. With this in mind, we encourage you to experience and support the work of the many extraordinary Indigenous dance artists working in Canada today. The National Ballet of Canada had the opportunity to collaborate with Tribal Vision Dance, Red Sky Performance and DNA Stage on a variety of projects and we hope you will follow their work at the links below: Tribal Vision Dance tribalvisiondance.com @tribalvisiondance Red Sky Performance redskyperformance.com @redskyperformance DNA Stage dnastage.ca @dnastage

Welcome to Swan Lake

This is such an exciting occasion for our company, as we finally premiere Karen Kain’s highly anticipated reimagining of Swan Lake. This production was a cornerstone of Karen’s 50th anniversary season with the National Ballet in 2020, and while the COVID-19 pandemic made that impossible, Swan Lake is still very much a celebration of Karen’s legacy with this company and her personal connection to a ballet she adores. Swan Lake is one of the landmark works of the classical canon. It premiered in Moscow in 1877 with choreography by Julius Reisinger and later revived by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov in 1895. That production is the foundation for most of the versions we know today. Swan Lake is set to the first score that Tchaikovsky wrote for ballet and was arranged by Riccardo Drigo. It contains some of the most recognizable and quoted music in classical dance. One of the contributing factors to the success and longevity of Swan Lake is that its narrative allows for new and exciting interpretations. Swan Lake exists in multiple versions worldwide, each with a slightly different take on the story, design and even the score. Karen’s new staging will be a valuable contribution to this international dialogue. I am thrilled you can join us!

Envisioning a New Swan Lake Karen Kain envisioned an emotional and visually compelling Swan Lake that would convey the wonder and darkness of the story while honouring the legacy of Erik Bruhn’s Swan Lake, an integral work from her repertoire. Kain looked to Bruhn’s choreography as a template, oversaw a fantastical design by Gabriela Týlešová and introduced additional choreography by Associate Artistic Director Christopher Stowell and Choreographic Associate Robert Binet. “My intent is to balance tradition with innovation,” says Kain. “Much of the choreography is Erik Bruhn’s but the look and atmosphere of the ballet is entirely new, which makes it feel poignant but also alive to the present moment.” A defining feature of Kain’s staging is her characterization of Odette as an adventurous woman, not a swan. Rothbart, an evil predator, curses Odette to live by day as a swan, but the audience never sees her that way. Whenever she is onstage, Odette is a woman. The same is true of the other women Rothbart has captured and with whom Odette finds sympathy and support. Odette’s captivity finds a contrast in the relative freedom with which four women at the masked ball approach Prince Siegfried as potential brides. Traditionally, these women are

princesses offered strategically to the court by their guardians or national representatives. In Kain’s staging, the women choose to attend the ball with their friends, eager to capture Siegfried's heart. In changing the traditional ballroom scene to a masked ball, Kain introduces an ideal cover for Rothbart, who arrives in costume to entice Siegfried into betraying Odette. Rothbart achieves this with a magic trick, Odile, a stunning vision of a woman who looks identical to Odette, conjured deliberately to intoxicate and deceive. She is an ingenious device in a production rife with questions about identity and belief. Rothbart’s formidable power is omnipresent and while his method resides in the unreality of magic and illusion, he creates devastating effects for the human beings in this world, the measure of which are Odette and Siegfried, whose love affair ends in tragedy. “With Swan Lake you have an evil, foreboding presence coming up against the love of Odette and Siegfried. That’s what makes you cry in the end. My hope for this Swan Lake is for people to be moved. I want to create an experience that touches them to the core.” – Artistic Director Emerita Karen Kain

Synopsis Prologue A young woman, Odette, ventures deep into the woods one night with her friends, seeking adventure. Arriving at a lakeside clearing, the women are suddenly aware of a sinister presence. Unbeknownst to them, they have entered the lair of an evil predator, Rothbart, part man and part bird, who captures Odette with his enormous wings, the symbol and instrument of his power. As the others escape, Odette is cursed to live in captivity as a swan, returning to human form only at night. Act I Many Years Later: A Royal Courtyard Prince Siegfried’s friends are preparing a surprise party in his honour, as he has recently come of age and will soon take up his royal duties. The young friends bring gifts and enjoy an easygoing camaraderie in the absence of authority figures, with Siegfried’s sisters Celia and Elizabeth and his closest friend Benno leading the charge. Siegfried approaches with his beloved Tutor, who presents him with a book, a sign of the education and care the Tutor has provided to him since childhood. Aware that his carefree days are now behind him, Siegfried is burdened with thoughts of the future. Siegfried's gloom intensifies when his mother, the Queen, makes an appearance at the party on her return from hunting and she presents him with a crossbow. The Queen reminds her son gently of his royal obligation to wed and says he will be expected to choose a bride the following night at the masked ball. After the party Siegfried shares his feelings of sadness with his Tutor and then abruptly sends him away, as though testing his newfound authority. Brooding, Siegfried takes up the crossbow and sets out for the woods. Act II The Lakeside Siegfried emerges by the lake to discover a mysterious transformation in process. Night has fallen and Odette is returning to human form. Siegfried watches from a distance and, enchanted, he starts to approach her. The sight of the crossbow frightens Odette but Siegfried gains her trust and she begins to tell her story, explaining that she is held captive by Rothbart and only a vow of true and faithful love will free her. Siegfried’s fascination with Odette deepens and they become closer, with each discovering a sense of freedom and understanding in their union. But Rothbart is quick to intervene and suddenly the lakeside is filled with women under his control. With dawn approaching, Siegfried prepares to vow his love to Odette, but she cautions him that he must be certain it is a promise he can keep. Reluctantly, he agrees to wait until after the masked ball.

Act III The Following Night: The Masked Ball Preparations are underway for the masked ball, where Siegfried must choose a bride. Attendants light an enormous chandelier, while the Tutor oversees every detail as Master of Ceremonies. Benno, Celia and Elizabeth arrive early and are soon joined by a room full of guests wearing fanciful costumes and masks that add intrigue to the glamourous event. Siegfried arrives late, a sign of his reticence and preoccupation with thoughts of Odette. Four interested women arrive at the ball, eager for an opportunity to win the Siegfried's heart. Each woman, with a group of friends in tow, performs a dance with the goal of captivating Siegfried’s interest and affection. But Siegfried is unmoved. Fanfare sounds the arrival of a mesmerizing new guest, Rothbart, who has a plan to keep Odette under his control. With his identity concealed by his costume, Rothbart conjures a trick for the crowd – a stunning vision of a beguiling, masked woman called Odile who looks exactly like Odette. Everyone falls under Odile’s spell but none more than Siegfried who believes she must be Odette. At Rothbart’s prompting, Siegfried makes a vow of true and faithful love to Odile, betraying Odette in error just as Rothbart planned. Chaos ensues and a violent storm floods the palace. Siegfried sees a vision of Odette in despair and, realizing his mistake, he rushes to the lakeside to find her. Act IV The Lakeside Odette’s companions lament Siegfried’s betrayal and its consequences for Odette, who will remain imprisoned by Rothbart. Odette comes to them, heartbroken, and they commune with her tenderly. Odette’s grief turns to anger when Rothbart appears. She confronts him with his treachery and in a furious response he whips up a storm. Siegfried arrives amidst the turmoil to beg Odette for forgiveness, which she grants, knowing that he has been tricked. But all is still lost. Rothbart separates the lovers a final time and he causes Siegfried to drown in the storm, leaving Odette in captivity.
