National Horseman spoke with some of industry’s leading experts in breeding to learn their perspectives on broodmare selection. The importance of the stallion is often emphasized when producing champion show horses. Describe how you value the mare, and why her impact is so important. TONY LEE

I have always put the most value in the mare. For me, this began with Liberation Starbrite. She was one of a kind and gave me the only stallion I have ever bred. I am a big proponent of great geldings. They are the backbone of the breed, and great geldings come from great mares. My current matriarch has proven herself with four great foals all by different stallions. I attribute this directly to her drive and personality that made her a great show horse, which she passed on to her get.

JUDY WERNER

I place enormous value on the female side of a pedigree. In my opinion, it is equally as important, or more important, than the sire side. Years ago, I was introduced to Marianna Haun, who wrote a book called, “The X Factor.” She strongly supported the relationship of inherited heart size and racing performance. Marianna was interested in looking at other breeds to see if the theory applied across the board to performance breeds, and I introduced her to several American Saddlebred breeders who also found her work fascinating. She also spoke at an American Saddlebred Convention. While I also had been of the notion that the mare was a big influence on the offspring, after listening to Marianna, I

started paying attention to some of her work as it related to my own broodmares. There is a way to measure hearts by an EKG. I never went that far, but one interesting physical characteristic that was found among horses with an active large heart gene is curly ear tips. I still look at a prospective broodmare’s ears. This started with Sultan’s Dianna (BHF), who had curly ear tips!

From great mares come great horses. No matter the stallion, a great mare is key.

KIM GRAHAM

I strongly believe the mare contributes well over half of the attributes in the outcome of the foal. If you start with an excellent dam line, the resulting offspring has a much greater chance of success.

KRISTEN BAGDASARIAN

The mare is a huge part, if not the most important part. Dam genes are strong in our breed. The sire is an important piece to the puzzle, but no sire will be successful if not bred to good mares! A good mare that has produced champion offspring, or has her BHF status, is invaluable to a breeding program.

MARTY SHEA

Basically, the biggest importance of the dam is that every great stallion has a dam that’s produced more than one good horse. Afires Heir’s dam, Brassmiss, produced one after another of top, top horses. That won’t happen all the time, but the dam is equally or more important than the sire.

SAMANTHA HEGSTROM

I greatly value the mare and her bloodlines for what she brings to the table. The dam, as well as the second and third dams, are so important, as they will have the biggest influence both in utero and while the foal is on the mare’s side until weaned.

I feel the mare is the most important. In essence, the stallion is just the “icing on the cake.” The foundation must be there with the mare.

SUSAN ASCHENBRENNER

The mare is of equal importance to the stallion. Always choose the very best mare you can with the characteristics you’d like in a foal. As a small operation, we know our mares well and can then choose a stallion based on that mare’s strengths and weaknesses.

What physical characteristics do you look for in a broodmare? TONY LEE

JUDY WERNER

Certainly, I want good conformation in a broodmare, but throughout the years, there have been some great-producing mares who were not beauty queens. Pedigree trumps physical characteristics many times.

legs, and good feet. Most importantly, they should have a show-horse attitude. It’s not always possible to breed an ex-show mare, but I would still look for the same qualities in a mare even if they hadn’t shown.

she has all the parts: great withers, great shape to her neck, neck sets high, great tail, average length to the back, and straight leg. You take a look at her, and you think, “That’s a good horse.”

SAMANTHA HEGSTROM

The physical characteristics I look for in a mare are straight legs, a good hip, and a nice shape to her head and neck.

I look for quality and conformation. Specifically, I like a beautifully shaped head and neck, laid-back shoulder, long legs, short back, a straight tail, and good feet.

JULIETTE DELL

I like a pretty mare with good bone to her. I don’t worry too much about the size of the mare, but I do like them to have a good barrel to them. I have had many smaller mares that have produced large foals. I don’t judge a mare’s size by hands when I am thinking of breeding them; I care more about how they are built. A good, stout mare will produce a nice foal regardless of how tall she is.

I value correct conformation, talent, trainability, and bloodlines that have proven success. I prefer show mares, as that gives you an excellent idea of their trainability and talent. I do tend to be drawn to beautiful mares!

If I had my preference, all my broodmares would be exshow horses. This would mean they all would have the qualities of a show horse, such as great athletic ability, trainability, an upright neck, pretty head and face, straight

I want them to have stretch, good length to the neck, good tail carriage, and moderate beauty. They don’t have to be a beauty queen, but they do need good basic structure. Inception’s dam is no raving beauty, but

I like mares that move really well. After that, I look for quality, head carriage, size, attitude, and charisma.

How do you consider the bloodlines of a broodmare when selecting a new mare for your program? What are you looking for? TONY LEE

I follow this same pattern: I look at the dam side down the line. The mare side is the key.

JUDY WERNER

When selecting a new mare for my program, I go through all the mares in her pedigree to see if they had a show record and if their offspring have show records. I love a mare with a CH in front of her name, and Broodmare Hall of Fame gets extra points from me. I also want to know if she went several years without having a foal, if so, why that was, and is she what we call “a Regu-Mate mare,” which factors in the cost of her upkeep.

The dam side on a broodmare is always my top priority. I get excited about mares whose dam, granddam, etc., have consistently had success producing.

KIM GRAHAM

I research the ASHBA website on a regular basis. I believe it’s important to have a strong dam line

in your broodmare, and it doesn’t hurt to be by a top stallion (who also should have a strong dam line). I like my mares to have show horse bloodlines, and the more family members with a WC or BHF title the better. I’m looking for mares that produce show horses out of other mares that have produced show horses.

KRISTEN BAGDASARIAN

I have a few studs here, so when I look to buy mares, those that spark my interest are ones that I think will cross with my stallions. I tend to gravitate toward certain bloodlines because they have crossed well with what I’m breeding or because I’ve had success with that cross in the past.

MARTY SHEA

If I had my druthers and in a dream world, I would only want to pick a mare that has great heritage three to four generations back, especially on her dam side. That’s one of the reasons I bought Brassmis. On the tail female side, she had champion producers going back.

SAMANTHA HEGSTROM

When selecting a broodmare, I study the dam side extensively. I look at what she has produced, what her siblings have produced, and then what her second and third dams have produced. I also look at what types of stallions they all crossed successfully with. From there, I look at physical attributes.

SHAWN STACHOWSKI

I have to really like the way a mare is bred to breed her. Being well-bred is really important. I have a tendency to favor Callaway Hills-bred mares.

SUSAN ASCHENBRENNER

I am looking for bloodlines and show records of the mare herself, and that of her sire and dam back a couple of generations. I do a lot of research, talk to other trainers and breeders, and watch carefully at the horse shows to see what catches my attention. This gives you a place to begin your research, as you usually see trends in bloodlines occur.

Can you describe the ideal temperament for a broodmare? TONY LEE

I love a mare with attitude in the show ring and that trademark Morgan companionship in the barn. Basically, the true Morgan temperament: a loving companion that always shares the best of themselves.

JUDY WERNER

It is certainly easier on everyone if a mare has a good temperament, but I have owned some divas who have a BHF after their name, and we learned to live with their personalities. However, foals learn from their dam on a daily basis, so you have to be very careful with the foals out of temperamental mares, and ensure that they respect humans starting at an early age.

I like game mares that are hot, yet trainable, and do not get emotional.

KIM GRAHAM

Although it makes my job easier to have a mare that is easy to handle and is a good mom, it’s definitely not a 12

deal breaker for me if they are a good producer but more difficult. There are ways around most tough mares; some of my best producers have some salt to them. Ideally, the mare is easy to catch, an easy keeper, nice to handle, gets in foal in one cover, stays in foal, foals with no complications, and has a huge bag of milk for her foal.

The ideal temperament for a mare: sassy. I like them hot and game, but sensible. And, of course, a good mom to the foal.

KRISTEN BAGDASARIAN

The temperament of your broodmare should be the same as the future show horse you want her to yield. Horses act exactly like their biological parents.

I don’t think there is an ideal temperament for a broodmare. Of course, agreeable, laidback mares are great to work with and deal with, but some of my tougher mares that are a little harder to deal with have been some of my best producers. I think it depends on what your goals are and what you want to produce. If you are trying to raise a game stake horse, the dam has to be game. In my breeding program, I have found my game mares are my best producers.

MARTY SHEA

If they’re a little hot, that’s okay, but you don’t want them to be cranky on the ground or under saddle. Ideally, their temperament is a certain amount of laid-back attitude. You want them to be a good mother, good-minded, and trainable, but spirited.

You want a mare who is reasonably pleasant to handle and trusts people. Show mares have a lot of this training, and it becomes even more important when they foal, as you need to be able to handle the foal. We frequently use surrogates (carrying foals for current show mares) which is not predictable as far as temperament, but we work with these mares in the months before the foals are born to gain their trust and cooperation. Foals have both inherited characteristics and learned behaviors, which is why it is really important to gain trust of the surrogates and to minimize the possibility of the foal learning negative behaviors from them.

Can you name a few favorite broodmares in your program, and why they are your favorites? TONY LEE

Liberation Starbrite and CHMH Spice Town Girl GCH.

JUDY WERNER

I would put Sultan’s Dianna (BHF) at the top of my favorite list of mares. She definitely marked all her foals with her distinctive look and athletic ability. Glenview’s Successful (BHF) is close to Sultan’s Dianna (BHF) on my list. She never showed due to a soundness problem, but she trained long enough to know she had talent, which she passed on to her offspring. In my current group of mares, Stonecroft I’m Aglow is a favorite. Her second dam is Sultan’s Radiance (BHF), and her third dam is the multi-World’s Champion Fine Harness mare CH Glenview Radiance, who was out of the great Dixie Duchess (BHF).

We have too many special broodmares to list, but I’ll mention two that people may be familiar with. We’re starting the first foals out of WCC Eeta Sachon and WC My Girl Next Door. Both mares passed on their look in tack, and their temperaments. Eeta Sachon’s fillies have her “look at me” attitude and her ultra feminine silhouette. My Girl Next Door passed on her extreme athleticism and exceptional disposition to her offspring. Both mares have been wonderful show horses, and they are proving to be excellent broodmares.

KIM GRAHAM

My favorite mare is CH Ms. Betty Grable. Not only was she an excellent show mare, she has a ton of class, is a dream to handle, is always pleasant, and is a wonderful mom to her foals. A couple more of my top favorite ladies are Ms. Mysterious, Salem Enchantress, and Callaway’s Melosa. All of them have produced some of my favorite colts to work with, and they are excellent mothers.

KRISTEN BAGDASARIAN

I have a lot of favorites! I’ve been lucky to have some wonderful mares in my breeding program. One of my all-time favorites was a mare named Blue-Eyed Girl. We bred her to several different stallions, and she was the first mare to foal a Master Class baby here. That foal was Master Blue, who won the 2-Year-Old Fine Harness class at Louisville. He then went on to win the 3-Year-Old and Stallion/Gelding Fine Harness World’s Championships with Smith Lilly. Blue-Eyed Girl also had a filly named The Blue’s Girl, who we sold as a 3-year-old and later got back as a broodmare. We bred The Blue’s Girl several times and currently have a young stallion by Master Class out of her, as well as a colt by (SA) Calif First Night Out, who looks to be one of the nicest foals we have ever raised. It has come full circle with those two mares. Both those mares are at the top of my list of favorites.

Brassmis. She was such a phenomenal producer. I don’t think she had a bad one. She might have had a small

one, but never a bad one. Rachita, my Dutch Harness Horse mare, crossed so well with Arabians she was hard to beat. She had numerous champions.

SAMANTHA HEGSTROM

It is hard to name a favorite mare; I like them when they are successful producers, as well as nice to handle. Our broodmares give so much that I have a soft spot for all of them.

SHAWN STACHOWSKI

Use Your Illusion, CH Callaway’s Nachelle, Callaway’s Ivanka, Flaunting It, Nirvana’s In Bloom, and Nirvana’s True Love, to name a few. These mares are producing consistently at a high level.

SUSAN ASCHENBRENNER

Ethereal Love. She has been a lovely show horse for me and has given us a World’s Champion and a World’s Champion of Champions. CH Callaway’s Queen Of Crimson, who also has produced a World’s Champion, as well as some other nice show horses, is one of my favorites. She was one of the reasons I got into breeding! We have several young mares in our program, now including two foals expected (via surrogates) from Ethereal Love’s daughter, WC Dreamacres Chapel of Love. Those foals will have three generations of WC mares in their pedigrees.

EMBRYO TRANSFER: A MIRACLE OF MODERN MEDICINE

ith the advancement of time, new innovations in technology and veterinary care are constantly shaping the equine industry and moving it forward. In 1972, a procedure that would change the world of equine reproduction was successfully performed: an embryo transfer. This procedure consisted of a mare being bred and the developing embryo subsequently being transferred from the birth mother to a surrogate, typically referred to as a “recipient mare.” This breeding technique allows older mares to continue to pass their bloodlines along without the potential risk of carrying a foal, and also gives breeders the opportunity to produce more than one foal per year from their most valuable mares.

National Horseman spoke with Dr. Kristen Loncar of Equine Medical Services Inc. to gain insight into the process a vet typically goes through to perform an embryo transfer. “The initial process is the same as if the mare was being bred to carry,” Dr. Loncar explains. “Once she has come in to heat and developed a large follicle, she is inseminated, ovulation is confirmed, and any postbreeding inflammation is treated. At the same time, the recipients are being checked and their ovulations are confirmed to make sure they line up with the donor mare. We generally want to use a recipient that ovulated from one day prior to the donor mare up until three days after. Seven to eight days after breeding, the uterus of the donor mare is lavaged, the fluid that is recovered is filtered, and then we search under the microscope for the embryo. Once it has been identified, it is placed in a transfer gun, and is inserted through the cervix of the recipient and deposited directly into her uterus.” After this practice was initially developed and the process of flushing and transferring the embryo was perfected, veterinary clinics saw an increase in breeders utilizing embryo transfer. While some owners are drawn to the advantages of being able to produce 16

more offspring from their mares, others appreciate the increased success rate that embryo transfer can provide. Traditional conceptions have a 65 percent average success rate, but the pregnancy rate in recipient mares after implantation is generally 80 to 85 percent. National Horseman’s publisher, Allison Lambert, considered all those factors when deciding to breed her daughter, Ava’s, Walk-and-Trot mare, The Princess Dianna, through embryo transfer. “Because she was one of the last living offspring of her World’s Champion bloodlines, I always knew I eventually wanted to breed her,” says Allison. “However, knowing that older mares only have a 30 to 40 percent chance of becoming pregnant when in estrus, I felt our window of opportunity was quickly closing, and reproductive challenges could soon play a part in our success as she got older. Therefore, we decided to use embryo transfer to allow Ava the opportunity to continue showing her, and increase our chances of breeding success.” According to Allison, one of the most critical decisions for breeders who are proceeding with embryo transfer is choosing a vet. “Luckily, we’re part of a community comprised of some of the most experienced, intelligent, and well-versed breeding professionals in the country,” she says. “The minute I started to consider breeding our mare seriously is when I began asking a lot of questions to a lot of people. I spoke to breeders and trainers I look up to and trust: those who have first-hand experience and know what works, what doesn’t work, and what questions to ask when selecting a vet.” With the help of Dr. Rob Foss and Dr. Jerry Longworth, it was time to coordinate the breeding. With Allison’s mare residing in Arizona, the recipient mare in Missouri, and the stud, Sedgefield’s Legacy, standing in Kentucky, everything had to be meticulously planned with no margin for error. Despite the challenges of distance and time constraints, the procedure was successful and produced a stunning filly, Bow Down To The Crown, who will be making her show-ring debut in 2023. Despite the new possibilities that embryo transfer opens in the field of reproduction, the procedure’s drawbacks also must be considered. According to Dr. Loncar, the biggest barrier of embryo transfer is the increased cost and labor when compared to natural breeding. “For traditional breeding, many people choose to pasture breed and turn a stallion out with a herd of mares, or hand breed, where the mare is covered when she comes in to heat and is later checked for pregnancy,” she says. “With embryo transfer, the mare has to be checked via transrectal ultrasound multiple times to determine ovulation.” Additionally, Dr. Loncar says that although embryo transfer may help some mares that struggle to carry their own foals, it is not applicable in every situation. “The mare has to be able to ovulate and have a uterine environment that can sustain the embryo for seven days,” she elaborates. “This still eliminates breeding mares that have anovulatory issues, uterine infections, or large amounts of chronic fluid.” As the show-horse industry continues to find new avenues of growth in and out of the arena, embryo transfer provides a world of opportunity for existing breeders to continue producing champion bloodlines, and for new breeders to explore different avenues of breeding their beloved mares. THE CALLAWAY HILLS LEGACY BY BETTS COUP

hen the world lost Lenore “Tony” Weldon in October 2022, the tragedy of her passing signified the end to an era in the Saddlebred world. She had carried on the remarkable Callaway Hills breeding program and its incredible legacy. Tony loved the farm, the horses, and the bloodline that she and her mother, Betty Weldon, had worked so hard to cultivate for generations of American Saddlebreds. There was nothing that Tony wanted more than to know that their legact would continue, and through a set of remarkable plans set by Tony, that legacy lives on. Callaway Hills was originally the dream of Betty Weldon, who first convinced her parents to build a training and breeding facility in the 1940’s. Betty loved the American Saddlebred, and she bought Fourth Estate (BHF) using money gifted by her parents at her college graduation for her

first significant horse purchase. That mare became the dam of Callaway’s Johnny Gillen, by CH Wing Commander. Callaway’s Johnny Gillen then had two sons: the many-titled World’s Champion CH Rob Shriver, and World’s Grand Champion CH Will Shriver. “Will” later became the pater familias of the Callaway Hills breeding program. “The farm would never have gotten to the size it is if it hadn’t been for him,” Tony said in an interview in 2012. “Mother didn’t set out to be the largest breeder of Saddlebreds, but she was for quite a while. She loved Will and believed he could make a big impact on the breed.” Betty had loved “Will” since he was just a baby on the farm, and she put her trust in the young trainer Redd Crabtree to bring him on. Will developed into a horse with power, size, stamina, and the clean gaits for which Callaway Hills has since become known. He had a four-year-long winning streak in the 1970’s, also captured the Five-Gaited

Stallion World’s title for three straight years, and was the 1976 Five-Gaited World’s Grand Champion. Will was known for siring the top five-gaited horses from that year until his death, and his legacy lived on through his sons. Amongst his star five-gaited offspring were CH Will’s Bulletin, CH Callaway’s Criterion, CH Callaway’s Gold Rush, and many more. “He saved the five-gaited horse with his strength,” Tony said. “80 percent of what we breed are gaited horses, and they’re all so trainable; he passed on guts and strength.” Tony’s beloved show mount CH Callaway’s Headliner, a star of the Five-Gaited Pleasure ranks in the 1980’s, was by Will. “He was the perfect example of the type of horse Callaway Hills prides itself in. He was well over 16 hands and the kindest horse. He might have been a little straight-legged behind, but he would never quit,” Tony recalled. “All of Will’s get are second workout horses, all heart and go. That’s his stamp.”

CH Will Shriver passed away in 1991 after three colic surgeries, and it was a terrible loss for Betty and Tony Weldon. Many worried it would signify the end of the Callaway Hills program. At that time, frozen semen was only kept for a year after collection, meaning 1992 would be the last year for that stallion’s direct bloodlines to be passed on. However, those worries were certainly for naught, as Will’s two young sons, Callaway’s Blue Norther and CH Caramac, were waiting in the wings. Though they had only been standing at stud to the public for about a year and weren’t terribly well-known yet, it became clear that they could carry on the legacy of their sire when their babies started to hit the training arenas and show rings. CH Caramac, a World’s Champion several times over, was a personal favorite of Tony’s. “He was an outlaw. He would have as soon eaten Tom Moore as not, but he was always kind to me,” Tony remembered. CH Caramac sired many successful offspring, including World’s Grand Champion Callaway’s Annabel Allison, and other World’s Champions like CH Callaway’s Arbitrator, CH Callaway’s Aperitif, CH Callaway’s Career Girl, and Caraway (BHF). And of course, CH Caramac’s legacy lives on through the remarkable Undulata’s Nutcracker, the top performance sire for the breed for at least a decade. Though his name does not include the Callaway Hills signifier, Undulata’s Nutcracker has the CH Caramac stamp and carries on those remarkable bloodlines. Callaway’s Blue Norther, who also earned World’s titles in the Five-Gaited ranks, has had his own strong impact on the Saddlebred breed. Amongst his get have been five-gaited stars, as well as countless champions across the divisions, including World’s Grand Champion CH Callaway’s Forecaster. Callway’s Blue Norther is also the sire of Callaway’s Northern Kiss, another stallion who has put a stamp

on countless show stars, including our current FiveGaited World’s Grand Champion: Epoque Kiss NKF. At the Callaway Hills program’s height, the Weldons were breeding more than one-hundred foals a year, but in the 2000’s, loss struck. Sadly, CH Caramac and Callaway’s Blue Norther were both lost, though these two horses were able to remain directly a part of the Callaway Hills program for years after through artificial insemination. Betty Weldon, Tony’s mother, also passed away in 2006, and Tony had to fight hard to keep Callaway Hills in place with its breeding program going – but she was determined. By 2012, Callaway Hills was breeding only one-third of the number it had been. However, Tony followed in Betty’s footsteps – even using Betty’s notebook to track breedings. In the 2010’s, Callaway Hills continued to see big winners like CH Callaway’s Brioni and Callaway’s Ivanka. Tony had an unending loyalty to the Callaway Hills bloodlines and pride in what her mother, and then she, had created. “Most of the horses at Callaway Hills are homebred,” she said. Though she occasionally brought in mares with outside blood for diversity, particularly liking the cross with Supreme Heirbred mares, every single foal’s stallion line has always been traceable back to the very first horses purchased by Betty Weldon. Each horse bred at Callaway Hills had their roots firmly planted through Fourth Estate (BHF), to Callaway’s Johnny Gillen and then CH Will Shriver, all the way down to the most recent crop. They were all raised in the rolling hills of Callaway County, Missouri, in between Fulton, Columbia, and Jefferson City. With the loss of Tony Weldon, however, the horses will no longer remain on that particular property. Thankfully, a team of great friends, breeders, and owners of Callaway Hills horses, with help from Tony herself, have made it possible for the program to move forward.

The reasons for wanting to keep the Callaway Hills lineage alive are not purely historical or sentimental; they are also deeply practical and recognize the impact Callaway Hills has had overall – something critically important to the future of the American Saddlebred. Fred Sarver, who owns and runs the great Cornerstone breeding program today, was an active part of Callaway Hills after starting as Farm Manager in December of 1988. For him, the program was critical to the Saddlebred breed. “CH Will Shriver and his sons, particularly Callaway’s Blue Norther and CH Caramac, have, in my opinion, created a type within the breed. It saved the five-gaited horse from extinction,” Fred states. He and Tony became good friends and remained so after his departure. He appreciated her deep love of all animals, and her support of the Callaway Hills Animal Shelter, and – after Betty’s passing – the breeding program. “Tony made it her life’s work to continue the legacy of Callaway Hills Stable. She was tenacious and would work hard to make the brand respected in history,” Fred says. Over the years, he stood stallions at stud and provided resources for Tony, but he also enjoyed conversations about breeding and far beyond. “She was very wellread. She had multiple interests and was a respected lawyer,” Fred explains. “Tony will be remembered by her friends as loyal, and by the wonderful horses that will continue the legacy of the farm she loved.” Melissa Moore’s father, Tom Moore, was a dear friend of Betty Weldon and a successful trainer for Callaway Hills. He trained Callaway’s Blue Norther and CH Caramac, as well as many of Tony’s Junior Exhibitor and Amateur mounts. He would also go out to Callaway Hills to evaluate that year’s group of youngsters. Melissa also grew up knowing Tony. “I knew Tony for a very long time. She always had a deep love for The American Saddlebred. I truly believe her passion for Callaway Hills and its breeding program was just as strong in her heart and soul as it was in her mother’s. She was trying to carry on a great family legacy, and I believe she succeeded,” Melissa explained after Tony’s passing this fall. The impact of Callaway Hills cannot be underestimated. “You can look at any set of papers today and find some trace back to Callaway Hills. Without them our industry would look totally different, and not in a good way,” Melissa explains. “You will find CH Will Shriver, Callaway’s Blue Norther, or CH Caramac somewhere in most papers today.” Kim and Todd Graham are another powerhouse of the breeding and young horse industry today, and they came to know Tony well through their many purchases. “They’re horses with heart! They’re straightforward, wellrounded horses that love their jobs – a true show horse,” Kim says of the Callaway Hills-bred horses. The Grahams continued to purchase horses from Tony throughout the years, most recently Callaway’s Local Legend. Much like the others, Kim cannot overstate the impact of the program: “The American Saddlebred would be a completely different breed than they are today without the influence of Callaway Hills.” Burt Honaker started working at Callaway Hills back in 2001, and his time there defined his professional life and career going forward. He now owns and operates Northern Kiss Farm with his wife, Miriam. They are responsible for standing the great Callaway’s REMEMBERING TONY WELDON |

Northern Kiss to stud and bringing on the reigning FiveGaited World’s Grand Champion Epoque Kiss NKF, both of whom will carry the Callaway Hills lineage into the future. “Tony loved all animals, but she truly loved the horses at Callaway Hills. She loved being able to carry on the same love her mother had for them,” Burt explains. He absolutely adored both Callaway’s Blue Norther and CH Caramac, and he sees them as the two horses that allowed the Callaway Hills impact to blossom and led to his own stars in the breeding shed and show ring. “Callaway Hills has had, by far, more of an impact on the American Saddlebred than any other breeding farm. I personally can’t imagine the American Saddlebred without Betty and Tony Weldon, and especially CH Will Shriver. He was a magical breeding horse,” Burt explains. Burt remained close to Tony throughout the rest of her life, and is deeply proud of the fact that the Northern Kiss Farm breeding program has its roots deeply embedded in Callaway Hills. “I’ve always been a huge supporter of Callaway Hills. Without it, I would not have had the same success I’ve had in the industry. I’ve personally tried, and I’m still trying, to carry on Callaway Hills through my breeding program at Northern Kiss Farm,” Burt concludes. Smith Lilly has had a long and close relationship to Tony and Callaway Hills, and has been training some of Tony’s most exciting prospects over the past years. She sent the great CH Callaway’s Brioni to him as a 3-year-old to finish and market. “Ceil Wheeler fell in love with him, and seven years and seven World’s Championships later, he is part of the East Belmont 46

and Mercer Springs families,” Smith explains. “While “Brioni” is my personal favorite, Callaway Hills has an incredible history of producing great horses in all divisions.” Smith agrees with many others that Callaway Hills-bred horses are known for their athleticism and work ethic. “If you ask them to do a job, they will give you their best effort,” he states. Shawn Stachowski came to know Tony through many trips to Callaway Hills over the years. “My family has owned several horses bred by Callaway Hills that have meant a tremendous amount to us. Initially, Tony and I bonded over those horses, then it developed into a wonderful and lasting friendship,” she explains. For Shawn, Callaway Hills produced horses that are hard workers. “The great ones have a strong sense of pleasing their human. The ideal Callaway Hills horse is a dynamic performer who possesses power, intelligence, and willingness,” she says. According to her, there has been no other farm that has done so much for the American Saddlebred. “In my opinion, Callaway Hills has been the greatest Saddlebred breeding institution in history. Not only have they bred countless champions, but it’s hard to find any show ring superstar that does not contain Callaway Hills in its pedigree. The impact is huge and irreplaceable,” she explains. Over the years, Shawn supported the farm by purchasing horses and being there for Tony as a friend. “It was an honor to know and love Tony Weldon, first through the admiration of the horses and then to how kind, loving, and extremely intelligent she was. Tony

always made me feel like I was important to her. She made me feel good, and I can only hope I was able to make her feel the same way,” Shawn explains. When Tony passed away, it seemed as though it might be the ending of that legacy and impact, and in one way, it was – the horses will no longer be in Callaway County. However, not all hope is lost, and there is an incredible team ensuring the impact can continue. At the center are Ricky Cook and Kelly Gretlein. Kelly first came to know Tony when she joined Callaway Hills under Mrs. Weldon’s leadership in 1988, and has been a part of the farm ever since. “Through Mrs. Weldon’s passing and the hard battle that Tony had to fight, we got close as a farm family,” Kelly explains. Over the years, Kelly knew that Tony loved her horses and had particular favorites that were meaningful to her. “She was always very enamored of a few horses. There were always five or six that she really adored, and you could see it. One of the best ones, the stallion Callaway’s Adamant, you could see how she felt about him in the look in her eyes,” Kelly says. And the horses loved her back. “If she showed up, that horse came running. If he was out in the paddock and she came into the stud barn, he was right back in that stall. She always had a few little goodies in her pockets for them.” Tony was also considerate of the farm family. “She always remembered things about the people who worked for her. I would always get funny little texts or a little package at holidays. I appreciated that, she remembered about you and your life, who you were, and what you did,” Kelly says. Ricky Cook knew of Callaway Hills as a horse-loving teen. He first fell in love with horses, then fell in love with Saddlebreds as soon as he got to know them. From the moment he learned about the breeding program at Callaway Hills, he was in awe. He got his first Callaway horse when he was in his early 20’s, but Ricky and Tony made a connection when he purchased the grand Callaway’s Clemency. Ricky always knew of and was influenced by Tony’s incredible loyalty to the Callaway Hills bloodline and the American Saddlebred. “There was no other breed or other bloodline,” Ricky explains. “There was the CH Will Shriver line, and that was it, even when we know there needed to be a few things added in. Tony was just completely dedicated; she was 100 percent going to see to that farm and do everything in her power to make her mother proud.” Tony did just that, all while being a responsible breeder, too. During Betty’s time, the program was associated with a local 4H group where they’d send the horses that might not have been preparing to be show stars, and Tony did her absolute best to continue that throughout her time at the helm. She truly loved the horses that had been raised at the farm, and she kept tabs on those that went in the show ring. Tony also made sure that the owners who purchased Callaway Hills horses had a good spot to watch them in Freedom Hall, keeping seats open in her suite for the barns showing Callaway Hills horses if they needed to have a place to sit. Though one might not always think of the farm when considering Undulata’s Nutcracker and his personal effect on the Saddlebred, he is very much a product of those bloodlines by CH Caramac. “There

would be no Nutcracker without Callaway Hills. I don’t know where we would be without Callaway Hills, but I don’t know that I’d want to see,” Ricky states. As Tony became more ill this fall, Ricky was hard at work with Tony to make decisions and carry out arrangements as quickly as he could. “There were a lot of things going on at Callaway Hills during that time. We made as many arrangements as possible before she passed, with her making the decisions, and we’ve done everything in our power to do everything Tony wanted or would have wanted,” Ricky explains. He would visit Tony two or three times a day in the hospital, making one major decision at a time and then going to carry it out. “She was quite well up until the last 48 hours, and we accomplished a lot in the last four weeks,” Ricky explains. Kelly interjects, “You were a whirlwind, but it was so important to the farm, to Tony, for the future of the farm and the animals.” For Ricky, it was critical to ensure the care of the horses was lined up. “When something like this happens and there’s that many mouths to feed, you had to remember that Tony did pass, but the horses are still alive and need care every day,” Ricky says. “Maybe it seemed fast, and it was as fast as we could go, but it’s what had to be.” Ricky made countless trips to his farm in Tennessee and elsewhere, but he and Kelly both feel that both Tony and Betty Weldon would be pleased with what they were able to do then and have been able to do since. There are now no horses remaining at Callaway Hills, something truly striking for those who have spent so many years there like Kelly. The three stallions who have been standing to the public have gone to three of Tony’s friends and fellow breeders: Callaway’s Adamant has gone to Ricky, Callaway’s Bluesman has gone to Fred Sarver, and Callaway’s The Gipper has gone to Shawn Stachowski. “That was based on an agreement we all came to with Tony. We’d each care for one of them, and they can never be sold. They’re in our perpetual care, and we will do that,” Ricky explains. The program will also live on at Ricky’s, as he’s moved all the non-retired mares to his farm where they will continue their broodmare careers. “Callaway Hills, the farm and address, along with Tony, have passed, but I think Betty and Tony Weldon would be very pleased to know that the bloodline they loved and cared for so much will continue,” Ricky says. Kelly will also come to Tennessee for the breeding season to foal out her beloved broodmare band. “Ricky has been an absolute angel to my girls,” she explains. “I thought of those broodmares as my girls. I locked those fence lines with buckets of feed, I kept them from arguing, I cared for them for so many years, and I was so worried about what would happen to my girls. I knew a lot of them from birth, but Ricky has been a godsend to me,” she says. For Ricky, it was deeply important not just for the bloodline and program to continue, but also for the mares to stay together. “If you have a big program like mine – we have over 100 broodmares – one of your biggest jobs is finding groups of them that get along. Mares can be opinionated,” Ricky explains. “All of the mares that came from Callaway Hills, they’ve been best friends for countless years. We can’t forget that. It’s not always just a horse.”

Tony Weldon and Lucky’s Choice

The more ephemeral aspects of Callaway Hills are also being taken care of and are also shepherded by Ricky. CH Will Shriver, CH Caramac, and Callaway’s Blue Norther were all buried at Callaway Hills, and they will be moved and re-interred at the American Saddlebred Horse Museum in Mexico, Missouri. All of the memorabilia for the farm will be added to the archives of the American Saddlebred Horse Breeders Association, but also put on loan to the museum in Mexico. Though Callaway Hills no longer truly exists as a farm, its horses have safe, secure, lifelong homes, many together in the same place. The Weldons’ 80 years of careful stewardship had an immeasurable impact on the American Saddlebred breed – on its size, stamina, trainability, clean gaits, and looks. It is rare to find a Saddlebred alive today without a connection to the Callaway Hills breeding program. The fact that even after Tony’s passing, the Callaway

Hills legacy will continue speaks volumes to her dedication and to the passion and care she inspired in her fellow breeders, trainers, owners, and caregivers. To conclude, Kelly stated: “I am honored and privileged to have worked with Mrs. Weldon and Tony for 34 years. Callaway Hills has been my second home. There are no more horses, but sometimes I find myself up there, just looking around. Old habits die hard. I really want the legacy of the farm to continue, and Ricky’s been a big help to make that happen.” Ricky, Fred, and Shawn will steward the lives of the stallions who have continued the Callaway Hills bloodlines, and the mares will also live out their lives safely and securely – many of them adding to the story Betty Weldon began and Tony Weldon continued. If the heroic effort already under way is any sign, there is still more to come from Callaway Hills. The history and this incredible legacy will live on. REMEMBERING TONY WELDON |

he passing of a legend is always a dark day, and saying goodbye to the “King of Trot” is a dark day indeed. Aequus+// was a once-in-a-lifetime horse, and he passed at the age of 34 in November 2022. By Sheikh Ibn Shiko and out of C Me Maroussa, Aequus+// was blessed with a tremendous amount of movement, and quickly took the show ring by storm with his larger-than-life trot. Aequus+// quickly became an icon of the Arabian Park Horse division and had an amazing reign in the show world with his career spanning two decades. After winning two Canadian National Champion Park Horse awards in 1995 and 1996, he won his first U.S. National Championship in 1997. He continued to storm the park division and took home 11 National and Reserve National Champion titles during his career. Aequus+// is one of the Arabian breed’s most winning Park horses. Not only did he take home multiple Championship titles, he also was The Arabian Horse Times Park Horse of the Year in 2007 and a finalist in USEF’s Horse of the Year awards. Aequus+// had a lifetime of outstanding achievements, even being inducted into the Horse Stars Hall of Fame. Aequus+//’s trainer, Bill Rodgers, remembers him fondly. “Aequus was a once-in-a-lifetime horse, for both his amazing ability to trot and his personality,” says Bill. He had an undeniable presence in the arena, and he wasn’t called the King of Trot for nothing. “Aequus stands at 14.2 hands tall, but he is a giant at heart,” Rodgers reminisces. “He’s never failed to give us 100%. I wish that everyone who’s owned a show horse could experience one like this.” Those who worked with Aequus+// will never forget his athleticism and heart. They describe him as completely transforming in the show ring. “Aequus is one of the great ones. He had more heart than most, and always gave 110% when asked.” His place as a legend will never be forgotten, and his offspring will continue his legacy. Aequus set the standards high for the Arabian Park Horse, and memories of his trot will reign supreme for decades to come. Long live the King. 64

avid and Cindy Bandy have seen their fair share of greatness at Wiloma Plantation, and the stunning mare WP Rosanna Orana was no exception. An excellent cross of the *Oran Van Crabbet son Oran Van Bandy and a grade Hackney mare, WP Rosanna Orana was a rare combination of Crabbet breeding. Sadly, this English and Park legend passed on October 29, 2022. “Rosanna’s” talent was apparent from the moment she was born, but as she matured questions regarding her future circled because of her smaller size. After growing to just 14.2 hands, Rosanna was criticized as too small and the Bandys were told by outsiders that she would never amount to anything under saddle. However, her exceptional beauty and extraordinary talent proved the world wrong and defied all odds. Tish Kondas gave Rosanna her chance to shine and campaigned her for the Half-Arabian English Pleasure Junior Horse division in 2006. Rosanna took Louisville by storm that year with her unforgettable performance in the final, where she took home the Reserve National Champion title. Tish remembers the thrilling experience fondly. “The butterflies that mare gave me, and the excitement she brought the crowd, were off the charts,” she states in an online announcement of Rosanna’s passing. “She was small, but she showed like she was 16 hands with no quit in her!” Tish lovingly described Rosanna as having the “guts of a warrior and the pretty of a princess.” WP Rosanna Orana’s success continued in the following years with no signs of slowing down. She took home another Reserve National Champion title in 2007 and a Top Ten finish in the Half-Arabian Park in 2008. In 2009, Rosanna once again proved herself as she took home the AAOTR National Champion title. Not only was WP Rosanna Orana one of the Bandys most successful crosses in their breeding program at Wiloma Plantation, her legacy lives on in her daughter by WP Corporate Image, WP Little Black Dress, who is continuing her mother’s winning ways in the Park division.

n June 21, 2022, the Arabian horse industry mourned the loss of the striking bay stallion, IXL Noble Express+. A son of MHR Nobility out of the El Ghazi mare RY Fire Ghazi, Ixl Noble Express+ was loved for the majority of his life by Dave and Gail Liniger of Maroon Fire Arabians, Tim and Marty Shea of Shea Stables, and the Kiesner family. He was a leading sire of Arabian performance horses and consistently stamped his offspring with his striking looks and powerful impulsion. Shown throughout his career by beloved partner Joel, Noble himself was a Regional and National Park Champion, and his offspring have continued in his success. IXL Noble Express+ is the sire of over 100 Nationally-titled offspring, including four-time Unanimous National Champion Inception. His most successful progeny are out of Afire Bey V daughters, a cross for which he became best known. He lent his exceptional hind end to Afire Bey V’s wonderful front end motion, creating a generation of well-balanced saddle seat horses and passing along square, cadenced movement as well as beauty. In addition to the hundreds of show-ring stars by IXL Noble Express+, three of today’s rising top sires are also his progeny. Black Daniels, Inception, and Coltrane SS are perpetuating their sire’s legacy, producing offspring who are consistently in the ribbons at Regional and National competitions. They continue to cross beautifully with descendants of Afire Bey V and Brass, and their get possess IXL Noble Express+’s signature beauty and power. Though the Arabian world is saddened by the loss of this legend, his legacy lives on in a new generation of Saddle Seat Champions who are making their mark on the divisions and honoring this great stallion with every victory pass.

he new year was rung in with a wave of sadness at news of the loss of Magnum Psyche. “The Horse of Kings” was beloved by Fernando and Joaquin de Santibañes of Haras Mayed and the Boggs Family of Midwest Training Centre, and passed away in Argentina at the age of 28. As a four-time U.S. and Canadian National Champion Halter Stallion, Magnum Psyche is revered for his contributions to the Arabian breed through his offspring. Many praise Magnum Psyche for his contributions to the Arabian breed as a stud. He is the grandson to *Padron, who is considered by many to be one of the greatest stallions of all time. Even as a weanling, it was evident that *Padron’s “perfect” combination of Crabbet and Old English lines made him a valuable breeding prospect, and he was imported to the US as only a yearling. Magnum Psyche inherited many of his grandsire’s traits, including his fine bone, shapely head and neck, and incredible presence. As the sire of over 1300 offspring, Magnum Psyche has truly made his mark on the modern Arabian horse. Many of his progeny carry his bright chestnut coloring, swan-like neck, and even topline. Even his grandchildren are easily identifiable by their “Magnum”-like traits. In an online tribute, longtime trainer David Boggs writes, “While we are forced to say goodnight to this gentleman of pure class and grace, Magnum leaves the world a better place, with many descendants to carry on his monumental legacy. Magnum, you will always be my boy and never to be forgotten.” David’s sentiments echo those of all who adored this remarkable stallion. IN MEMORIAM
