JOURNAL WELCOME TO THE ACADEMY BOOK OF CHAMPIONS

T

hough equestrians come from all walks of life, we are all united by one thing: the love of the horse. Because of this love, we dedicate everything to our sport; taking all the lessons we can, making the long drives to horse shows, celebrating the victories and learning from the losses. Through it all, countless memories are made with friends who become like family. As the introduction to showing for many individuals, the Academy division is one of the truest examples of this dedication and camaraderie.

In an effort to provide these riders with a keepsake to memorialize the hours, energy, and dedication given in pursuit of this sport, National Horseman is proud to bring you the third annual Academy Book of Champions — the A.B.C. for short. As always, this book was curated with our Academy audience in mind.

Within these pages you will find a collection of memories from the 2023 show season, including galleries from the year, Academy Nationals coverage, and more!

We are excited to highlight the future of our industry in the A.B.C. for years to come. To our returning customers, we thank you for continuing to be a part of this journey. For our future customers, we hope to see you in the A.B.C. next year!

NATIONAL N AT I O N A L AC A D EM Y CHAMPIONSHIP

T

he organized chaos of the National Academy Championship descended on Murfreesboro once again, and encouraged riders of all walks to demonstrate their skill with the wonderful lesson horses who make riding possible for so many.

Competitors from 19 states had a chance to leave their mark on this special program held in this historic Nashville suburb, and once again exhibitors and their support crews impressed spectators with their ability to get horses ready, competitors up and into the ring, then off again so the next rider in line can mount up and have a smooth entry. The professionals and family members assisting their exhibitors have these transitions perfected to an art form, and it’s astonishing to see how smoothly everything goes considering how many people participate. Attendees considered this year’s show “the best one yet,” and no wonder — it celebrated some remarkable achievements.

Everyone who participates can take pride knowing that their presence helped raise funds for St. Jude’s. Over the years, the funds raised by this unique competition total an incredible $750,000 donated to this hospital, which is fitting for a show that has so many exhibitors under the age of 18. Supporting this excellent cause elevates each ride and the show as a whole.

The 2023 Instructors of the Year award went to Sarah McClintock and Gabby Greco of Highland Ridge Stables. The show committee presents this award to the instructors who have the most wins at the National Academy Championship, explaining on the show’s website that “Training Academy riders takes time, patience, skill, knowledge, energy, and passion and we want to recognize that.” Their barn family enthusiastically welcomed this accolade; in fact, nobody seemed to be surprised by it. Sarah and Gabby’s students recognized the trainers’ hard work and love for their students, and offered their congratulations while emphasizing how well-deserved the award was. The Highland Ridge exhibitors had such a successful show because of their instructors’ passion, dedication and patience.

It was also a Highland Ridge student who brought home the most prestigious award of the show. Kaitlyn Narkis and CH Highly Caffeinated aced the Academy Senior Equitation National Championships and earned the Lynn Via Memorial Perpetual Trophy. Kaitlyn and “Buzz” also rode away with a $5,000 scholarship

to William Woods University and a $3,000 cutback show saddle donated by The Winner’s Circle in Shelbyville, Tennessee. Another Highland Ridge rider also bested the competition in the Junior Equitation National Finals, with the win going to Isabel Rusch and CH Callaway’s Investigative Reporter. Isabel’s barnmate Tessa Buhlmann claimed third place in this impressive final.

Of course, none of this would be possible without the wonderful lesson horses who so willingly carry riders of all ages and skill levels. The Horse of the Year award was granted to A Royal Promise, a 2009 gelding by Promise Keeper and out of Champagne Amore. This special bay is owned and loved by Becca Hart and helps teach her students at True Hart Farm.

So much love goes into the National Championship that it is bound to improve every year that it runs. The efforts of the founder and director, Joyce Webster, combined with the work of the Advisory Board and cooperation from trainers, ensures that the show is tailored for the comfort and education of its exhibitors. The exhibitors, in turn, demonstrate their appreciation by showing the highest caliber of sportsmanship to their fellow riders and reaching new heights as they strive to perfect what they’ve learned. This Championship has run for nearly 25 years now, and it remains a joy to watch.

Margaret Lowry looks thrilled on her way through the out-gate, appreciative of the bright medal around her neck. The National Academy Championship was Margaret’s ninth show of the season, and she did herself and her trainers proud by trotting away with blue ribbons in Section A of the Walk-and-Trot Equitation and Showmanship classes for ages 11-12.

Later, she achieved even greater heights by taking reserve in the Junior Showmanship National Finals.

IS THERE A SPECIAL MEANING BEHIND YOUR STABLE NAME?

I have always wanted to incorporate “Dream” in the name of my farm. That’s exactly what it is, my dream that we have turned into reality! And being I was born and raised, and now established, in Florida, adding “Southern” was definitely fitting. It was actually the first name I came up with and it just stuck!

WHAT IS YOUR TRAINING PHILOSOPHY OR MOTTO?

“Never stop reaching for your dreams” is our motto and definitely something I instill in my students. I teach them that even when it gets tough, if it means enough to you, you’ll keep striving and working hard for it!

WHAT DO YOU FIND THE MOST REWARDING ABOUT BEING A TRAINER?

The most rewarding is definitely seeing my students click with new horses, or overcome the challenges of riding a more advanced horse. Whether it’s success at home or at a show, it’s super rewarding seeing the personal growth in a student and horse.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT AS A TRAINER?

I believe my greatest achievement has been purchasing and opening our farm. It had been a dream of mine since I started riding to have a farm of my own. We started our program at Solaris Farm, and when Sarah Russell moved to Ocala, I chose

to stay and continue our program at a new facility in the area, to keep our students and families riding and showing saddle seat. Making it all happen, thanks to the support of others, is definitely my greatest achievement as a trainer.

WHAT ASPECTS OF YOUR TRAINING AND CARE ROUTINE DO YOU FIND MOST IMPORTANT IN MAINTAINING A HAPPY HORSE?

Our horses love their time outside! They work so hard in our program, so I believe giving them that time keeps them working happily.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST VALUABLE LESSON YOU’VE LEARNED AS A TRAINER?

I have learned that students and horses are really a reflection of their trainer. What you put into it will truly come out. Each individual student and horse is unique, and I’ve learned you always need to be open minded, patient, and optimistic.

WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE GOALS FOR YOUR STABLE?

My future goal is to have more students and horses, and to continue to expand the program.

WHAT IMPACT WOULD YOU LIKE YOUR STABLE TO HAVE ON THE FUTURE OF OUR INDUSTRY?

I would love to continue to be an ambassador for our sport and saddle seat breeds, and to bring in and develop the future of our industry!

IN YOUR OPINION, WHY IS THE ACADEMY DIVISION VITAL TO THE SHOW HORSE INDUSTRY? JILLIAN: The Academy division allows young riders to learn the ins and outs of the show arena and how to pilot a horse in show-like environments.

Riders gain confidence in themselves, as well as their abilities as horsemen, while having just a little extra guidance from an instructor as well as a seasoned equine partner. The use of training tack allows riders to learn the finesse of bridle work while also protecting their equine partner.

Academy also gives parents a glimpse into the world of showing horses. Most times, I find that parents have the hardest time adapting to show life. Academy lets me ease parents into this crazy scene while being able to emphasize the rider’s abilities, not just their spending power on a horse.

DEVEAU: It grows riders from the ground up. We create a strong base for our industry by fostering a relationship with the horse from a young age. We need to give them the experience of competition and create a drive to work hard and succeed at the Academy level before most are ready for the show ring.

BROOKE: It’s where every future rider begins.

LEXIE: The Academy division is a great way for a new rider to get their foot in the door in a more affordable way and with less of a commitment. It also gives horses who might not have made it in a show program a chance to have a job, all while being loved by a ton of kids!

WHY DO YOU ENJOY TAKING YOUR STUDENTS TO ACADEMY SHOWS? WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE PARTS OF THE SHOW? JILLIAN: Shows give riders a look at how they have progressed. It gives us a goal to work toward following each show and helps my riders with confidence.

Almost all riders in my program show on some level, weather it be at home tournaments, local Academy shows, or even Nationals! We also have built an incredible community for our Academy riders. The kids are encouraged to cheer on their peers and look up to our Academy superstars. For me, the best part is seeing the bonds kids have formed as well as how shows offer a sense of togetherness.

DEVEAU: I love to see how some kids turn it on and have a natural grit and poise to be successful in the show ring. Some kids really surprise you, and I love to see those that are timid or nervous grow in confidence and continue to bond with their horse and gain horsemanship skills. I love to see their excitement over accomplishing their goals.

BROOKE: To introduce each rider to showing horses.

We love having the riders hang out together as a team before, during, and after the Academy session.

It’s a personal sport, but Academy makes the team aspect so important.

LEXIE: Academy shows give my riders a chance to see other riders working as hard as they do to meet a common goal. Our riders can always learn from watching others. I love the camaraderie that comes with Academy riders and their families.

WHY IS THE ACADEMY DIVISION, AND ACADEMY NATIONALS IN PARTICULAR, IMPORTANT FOR RIDERS WHO SHOW ACADEMY THEIR ENTIRE CAREER? JILLIAN: It’s the end goal, our “big dance,” and riders in my program work hard for the chance to show in Murfreesboro. The competition is insane and the riders truly are the best of the best. My kids feel just as validated by attending Nationals as the kids who show at the big shows simply because Nationals is so competitive.

DEVEAU: I think the opportunity to show at any level is important to the growth of our industry.

You never know, the kid who never made it out of academy may become the doctor who buys their own horse someday. We also have many second generation horse kids, and many of their parents showed at the Academy level or smaller local circuit.

The love for the horse will always have them wanting to provide the most opportunity for their children as well, at whatever level they can. Academy riders are important to our industry in many ways, not only for their impact financially on the horse industry, but also in a rider’s future. They can grow up to become dedicated and passionate riding instructors, trainers, vets, marketing gurus, or photographers. The list is endless. I also like the divisions many regions have created to give seasoned Academy riders opportunities, such as the Alpha division in the Southeast and our show Rider division in Kentucky.

They can continue to progress, and this keeps the long time academy riders from discouraging the “newbies.” We also have a Green Rider division for newer Academy riders.

BROOKE: Not everyone can afford a show horse.

The Academy division provides a competitive place for riders to compete on Saddlebreds, Morgans, Hackneys, Friesians, Arabians, and mixed breeds in

the saddle seat division. Also, it gives the horses a purpose that they wouldn’t have otherwise.

LEXIE: Academy Nationals is for riders who are the top of their league and gives those riders who might not leave the division a chance to have really stiff competition. This horse show also has a wide variety of age groups where other Academy shows might not. On the reverse side of that, riders who are new to Academy Nationals might have a disadvantage since there are so many riders who have been there for years and years prior.

WHAT POSITIVE DEVELOPMENTS HAVE YOU SEEN IN THE ACADEMY DIVISION THIS YEAR? JILLIAN: I’ve seen an increase in participation in my area. There are very few barns participating in Academy near us, but I have been working hard to educate fellow instructors on the benefits as well as getting some Academy classes added to local open shows.

DEVEAU: Camaraderie between barns — instructors and trainers loaning horses, lending a helping hand, doing whatever they can to help out a fellow instructor in need. I’ve also seen it with Academy kids between barns. I think social media encourages this for the older Academy riders, but also events like the ASHBA Youth Convention and youth events like junior judging so they can get to know one another.

I’ve seen this both locally and nationally.

BROOKE: The Academy division is bigger than ever.

Sessions are 6 to 7 hours in the Carolinas, and stands are full. The demand is here, it’s time to evolve and let the growth continue to expand the saddle seat world. Not every family can commit to a three to 4 day show. It is evident that an Academy session can fill the stands and stalls.

LEXIE: I liked the new and more clear rules put in place by most of the Academy horse shows this year.

WHAT IS ONE CHANGE TO THE ACADEMY DIVISION YOU’D LIKE TO SEE IN THE FUTURE? JILLIAN: Limit horse usage, especially at Nationals.

This year specifically, we saw the same horses go around and around. Many times, horses were going back-to-back and it’s just not fair to these horses. Our farm also participates in IEA and in that program we have a strict policy on horse usage per day to not over-use horses. I think something similar would be beneficial for Academy, especially at Nationals. Not only for the health and well-being of our animals but also to level the playing field. I also think some sort of qualification for Academy horses should be put in place. Horses previously shown in performance classes, or horses that are very well qualified to continue as competitive show horses shouldn’t be all that wins.

DEVEAU: More specific and streamlined judging specifications and guidelines. I know the quality of horses play a huge part in the success of many Academy barns. It’s hard to keep it an even playing field with $25,000 Academy horses consistently entering the arena nowadays.

BROOKE: Having judges at every show who have a lesson program. Without a program, judges know to look for the attributes of a Performance horse. But Academy develops the rider, who should be judged on his or her skills, regardless of how nice the horse is.

There is a big difference between the judging criteria.

A judge who teaches Academy sees this clearly. One day, these riders will show those fancy Performance horses to the best of the horse’s ability..

LEXIE: I would like to see Academy shows taking inventory of the horses who are in attendance and limiting the number of times each horse can be shown.

This will help to keep each horse safe and healthy.

WHAT IS ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU HAVE FOR ACADEMY STUDENTS LOOKING TO MOVE INTO THE PERFORMANCE DIVISION? JILLIAN: Ride, ride, ride. Be comfortable on your Academy mounts and don’t move up too soon!

DEVEAU: Ride as much as you can. Watch videos.

Watch show riders practice. Go to shows and watch

classes. You can learn an incredible amount from just watching, and I don’t think enough kids even at the show level do this. Also, be a good student at school and make good grades so your parents can see you really deserve it!

BROOKE: Enjoy the energy that comes with Performance. It is exhilarating and exciting. You are well-prepared from showing a lesson horse where the best rider comes out on top. Now, combine your skill with the athleticism of a Performance horse and enjoy every moment of high energy to lead to your success.

LEXIE: Watch the Performance classes at each horse show, it gives a great insight to the future of their show careers.

WHAT IS ONE THING ACADEMY STUDENTS CAN DO IN THE OFF SEASON/AT HOME THAT WILL HELP THEM IN THE SHOW RING? AND WHY? JILLIAN: Challenge yourself. Ride the easy horse, the hard horse, and everyone in between!

DEVEAU: All the things I said above for sure. Study your craft! I cannot stress enough how important it is to watch; learn what judges like, pick your favorite riders and emulate them. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Get a customized exercise routine to get stronger off the horse. We do lots of strength work off the horse: stretching, Pilates, etc.

BROOKE: Stay active! Ride at least twice a week in the off-season to stay legged up. Muscle memory is key. Make fun a priority in your off-season lessons so you can remember why you ride in the first place — because you love the horse and enjoy the ride. Play games, ride bareback, try something challenging and new. You and the horse will benefit and enjoy the fun.

LEXIE: Make a list of all they want to improve on from the previous season and try to work towards achieving those goals.

YEAR IN REVIEW P O P C U LT U R E Thanks to the phenomenon of “Stranger Things,” Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” topped music charts nearly 40 years after its first release. The fourth season of the suspenseful show premiered on May 27, 2022, with a key plot point revolving around the 1980s classic. By July 16, the song skyrocketed to #1 on the Billboard Global 200 chart. “Stranger Things” season 4 also kickstarted a newfound interest in “Dungeons & Dragons.”

In July 2023, “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” opened in theaters on the same day, inspiring a tongue-in-cheek “Barbenheimer” craze. The most dedicated movie fans saw both films as a double feature.

The box office success of both films heralded the return of the summer blockbuster. “Barbie” also became the biggest opening by a female director, as well as the highest-grossing film directed by a woman.

Taylor Swift kicked off The Eras Tour in spring of 2023. It was her first tour since 2018, and quickly became a record-breaker. The demand surrounding tickets, which promoted all of Taylor’s albums, hasn’t been seen since the 1980s, when stars such as Michael Jackson and Madonna were touring. Estimates suggest that by the time the world tour concludes in 2024, ticket sales would surpass $1.4 billion. This would place Taylor Swift far ahead of the current record holder: Sir Elton John.

SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY The world’s first malaria vaccine was approved in Africa after eight years of development. Malaria, a constant threat to nearly half the world’s population, has numbered more than 200 million cases and 600,000 deaths worldwide. Ghana and Nigeria have been given the green light to give the new vaccine to infants between 5 months and 3 years, since children under 5 account for about 80 percent of malaria deaths in the region.

In September 2022, NASA’s DART mission successfully altered the orbit of the Dimorphos asteroid. Dimorphos was no threat to Earth, but with about 2,000 asteroids considered “potentially hazardous,” scientists wanted to see if altering asteroid trajectory was even possible. Crashing their spacecraft into Dimorphos at 14,000 miles per hour shortened its orbit by 32 minutes – 25 times longer than NASA’s original goal.

2 0 2 2 - 2 0 2 3 WORLD EVENTS Thirty million pounds of plastic waste has been removed from the sea by 4Ocean since its inception in 2017. 4Ocean employs nearly 200 people across three continents that remove garbage, and convert the recycled plastic into bracelets.

The Ocean Cleanup project has removed 440,000 pounds of plastic.

2023 saw some remarkable cases of perseverance and survival.

Four children survived five weeks in the Colombian jungle after a plane crash, and all four were reunited with their families. Also, Australian sailor Tim Shaddock and his dog survived two months drifting in the Pacific Ocean.

The pair were rescued off the coast of Mexico.

Communities around the world are successfully restoring the environment. In Great Britain, the temperate rainforest around Loch Lomond was cleared of invasive plants and repopulated with native mosses. The Thames and Seine rivers show improvements to water quality and animal populations. In India, the Kerala state government and local villages completely revived the Kuttamperoor River after five years of work.

SPORTS The last of Michael Phelps’ swimming records was broken by Léon Marchand after 21 years.

Marchand completed the 400-meter individual medley in Japan at a time of 4:02.50, compared to Phelps’ best time of 4:03.84. Katie Ledecky and Sarah Sjöström also broke two of Phelps’ records, Ledecky by winning 16 golds at the World Championship, and Sjöström by winning her 21st individual medal at the World Aquatics Championship.

Super Bowl LVII saw the first time brothers played against each other. Travis Kelce, playing for the Kansas City Chiefs, matched up against Jason Kelce and the Philadelphia Eagles.

Travis and the Chiefs won the game, but the real star of the show was their mother, Donna Kelce, who attended the game in a split jersey and mismatched shoes so she could cheer on both of her sons. Her unique gameday outfit is now on display in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
