W

hat does an accountant do and what is the best way to run an accounting business? How can a bookkeeper expand their services? What is the best innovation a finance director can introduce to the business and further their career? Each year at Accounting Business Expo I look for the most interesting, challenging and different answers to these questions. Technology, of course, is bending conventional definitions out of shape. But it’s not just technology – a wave of new business ideas are rocking the foundations. The expo pools these trends into a wellspring of innovation which, thanks to the progressive nature of Australasian accountants and software companies, is unrivalled in the world.

Plus we have some of the best cloud accounting practitioners sharing their automation secrets for running highly efficient compliance firms. Accounting Business Expo is a roiling sea of creativity where you can soak up breakthrough ideas and share a drink with the best and freshest minds. If this doesn’t get you excited (and how could it not?) I’d like to propose another reason for attending both days this March. The accounting profession is in an unusual position. Doomsayers are predicting automation will cost accounting jobs yet, thanks to that same automation, doing a tax return has never been more profitable. Is changing the way you make money really necessary? I understand the psychology behind this. But perhaps it is the wrong question to ask yourself. Try this one instead: Can I be any better at what

These past summer holidays I took my two daughters and myself to a rollerblading lesson at the local skate shop. The shop had told us our instructor was a world champion at freestyle rollerblading. At the beginning of the lesson I had to ask – was it true? “Three times,” he said.

“The world of business isn’t like the world of competitive sports… Measure performance not just in the business’ financials, but in the eyes of your customers.”

This year we present CFOs who implement automation platform Salesforce and content marketing engine HubSpot. Accountants running blockchain consultancies and cryptocurrency investor agencies. Auditors bringing their systematic mindset to bookkeeping agencies. And accountants turned investment bankers returning to advise SMEs with financial modelling.

I do? As an individual, as a business owner, or in relation to the business itself. Can your business perform better? The answer should always be yes. I only recently understood why.

Watching him skate transformed a silly recreational activity into art, a display of beautiful possibilities and flawless execution. When someone demonstrates mastery it is literally mesmerising. How could we ever be taught by anyone else? It is unthinkable. How much would we be prepared to pay for another lesson? Happily twice as much. How would we treat any advice given by this instructor? With devoted commitment.

The world of business isn’t like the world of competitive sports. There’s no Olympics where one accountant is ruled the best in compliance. We can create and dominate our own niches. Your toughest competition is your current self. SMEs – the label that’s killing our growth

T

he medium sector is not officially recognised and by lumping medium enterprises in the SME label they are totally forgotten. Mid-size business owner Mike Rich says it is now time to make a change.

of our economy. Medium business owners, like myself and those I represent, don’t seek special favours but we certainly want recognition of our economic importance and a level playing field. Some call it the forgotten child syndrome.

I have worked with medium businesses for over 40 years including: 1) co-founding Attaché Software who are the leading local supplier of accounting and payroll software to this sector. We are a medium business ourselves so we eat our own dog-food; and 2) I am the co-founder of the NFP M-Institute (ANZ) and we have spent over $2 million studying this sector.

A recent survey across 22 European countries also supports my view. It concluded medium businesses were growing at 16% per annum versus 1.5% overall. But despite punching well above their weight, 90% said they face barriers to reaching their full potential. At the NFP M-Institute (ANZ) we believe all medium businesses face these six barriers to a varying degree: time to think, cash flow, succession, sales growth, digital technology and affordable assistance. We are endeavouring to build a trusted resource hub to assist them, along with keynote speakers and free business improvement guides.

Let’s start with a key issue – we don’t even officially recognise there is a medium sector. Our use of the term SME is erroneous. Originally SME was small and micro enterprises. The second issue is commentators and governments focus on physical rather than economic numbers. Probably because of their concern for readership and votes, but numbers miss the point. There are over 2 million businesses across Australia. About 95% are small and nearly 70% have no staff. There are under 100,000 medium businesses, while large business numbers are under 10,000. Despite this gross imbalance, the three distinct sectors – small, medium and large – each provide around a third of total revenue and employment. Looking only at the number of businesses has misdirected our energy to just a third of our economy. The consequences are particularly bad in regional areas where medium businesses are the lifeblood of the local community. Recognising the three distinct sectors would also help create more balanced and bipartisan economic discussion and policy. Currently it is grossly overweight on small and start-ups which also damages confidence in two thirds
