Interiors Australia + DENFAIR | 2022 Event Guide

It’s time to celebrate and discover design together again.
We’re absolutely delighted to welcome you to Interiors Australia + DENFAIR - the first trade exhibition for the Australian design and architecture industry in close to three years. While a lot has changed, one thing has not - the industry’s annual event is here to inspire creativity, generate meaningful connections and advance the design conversation in Australia.
So what can you expect? While we’ve all remained interconnected via a digital world throughout the pandemic, there is nothing like returning to the physical; it’s time to connect face-to-face and experience products again. Engage all the senses, get up close to products, feel an object or the surface quality and see in real life, the vibrancy of colour. Discover what you’ve missed, and what’s coming from the 100+ brands exhibiting. The free-to-attend Speaker Series brings a fine caliber of professionals to enlighten us and share their knowledge. Themes include sustainability, authenticity, and the future of design in various sectors after a pandemic. The AIA Refuel Stage is an accredited CPD program curated by and with thanks to the Australian Institute of Architecture and their Refuel partners.
The industry’s annual event is here to inspire creativity, generate meaningful connections and advance the design conversation in Australia.
4
Catch up with your peers in the Cult Lounge or Artichoke Lounge by Markian, or take a breather in the Panic Room by Electrolight. Witness collaboration in fine form through the KBDi Kitchen Collaboration competition. Reflect and ponder your thoughts in the installation by Arup, What We Do in the Shadows. This year, we’re proud to present Australia’s Next Top Designers, shining a spotlight on emerging designers, makers and creatives. Also championing the next generation of designers, is our project with exclusive higher education partner Collarts, which has connected students with exhibiting brands to work on ‘real’ projects. Their work is celebrated and on display, including the archway you’ve just walked through which is an ode to how we, as a community, shall approach Interiors Australia and the year ahead - Enter Curious, Leave Inspired.
#interiorsaustralia
We hope you enjoy the next three days of Interiors Australia, and look forward to welcoming you again in Sydney on 20-23 October.

Anti-viral Anti-bacterial Anti-odorous As the leader in large-format porcelain panels, Artekk’s revolutionary natural, mineral-fused surface is anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-odourous. As a semi-conductor composite material with a special structure, Artekk’s porcelain releases nanoelectro-ions through a strong redox reaction, destroying surface cellular structure – achieving the effect of inhibiting bacterial growth. Artekk’s anti-bacterial surface means there is no need for harsh detergents, even when used for building facades. Artekk forms an incredible surface for environments that are important to keep clean and hygienic; from hospitals, schools, kitchens and wet areas such as bathrooms and saunas.

Tutti Frutti by TK Design
Discover the KBDi Kitchen Competition winner, Tania Kloester’s kitchen built onsite in two days! Step back in time, to the 1950s. This design emulates happy days at a milk bar. Be drawn to an assortment of pastel tones in ForestOne’s range, including ‘Apricot Nude’ and ‘Saffron Yellow’. To top it off, Austaron’s acrylic terrazzo finish ‘Confection’ was the obvious choice for table top and splashback.
Hero Products A Mario Romano acrylic curved wall is the dramatic focal point to the design. Back-lit with cutting edge RGD lighting by Wilson & Bradley, it features the ‘honeycomb’ and ‘flame’ designs in contrasting Austaron colours. Standing at an impressive 3.6m tall and 1.8m wide this is sure to be an eyecatching piece. Explore the space by opening every door and drawer, to truly experience all the Blum hardware this display has to offer. New products by Bosch, Greens Tapware and Lo & Co Interiors are also featured. Don’t forget to look up to see our bespoke “Lamdelier” which will be constructed by the accomplished team at Kitchens by Peter Gill with striking segments of ForestOne laminate.

KBDI KITCHEN DESIGN COMPETITION
Platinum Sponsors
Supporting Partners KBDi Kitchen Competition KBDi in collaboration with Interiors Australia, launched a kitchen design competition for the inaugural Melbourne event. Members were encouraged to prepare a concept design showcasing both the skills of a design professional and the products and materials of key partners. The challenge was to design a kitchen space to feature selected products from Austaron, ForestOne, Blum, Bosch and Greens Tapware. A six-metre by six-metre square will serve as their footprint, and an 18-metre ceiling height (11.5-metre hanging height) will add volume to the space. The extra catch? It had to be built within 2 days.

ARUP LIGHTING INSTALL ATION
What we do in the shadows In a post-pandemic world, we are longing for stimulation, What we do in the shadows is a catalyst to make us reflect, ponder, and think about how we should live our lives.
The Inspiration Hidden in plain sight in the middle of Interiors Australia, What we do in the shadows enables visitors to have a visual and aural experience that is in stark contrast to the other installations around them. You can go from being exposed, to privacy and the physical act of ducking under the curtain and sitting down at floor level brings a unique experience of surprise and scale. Moving into different sections of the space, diverse soundscapes create individualised experiences that complement the visual display above. We were inspired to create something memorable, sharable, and purposefully different – but also fun.

COLL ARTS ENTR ANCE FEATURE
Introducing the designers and specifiers of the future
Exclusive higher education partner Collarts Interior Design (Bachelor of Arts) students designed and built the show entrance feature as well as displaying their work in the Collarts Lounge. This project connects students with exhibiting brands allowing them to work on ‘real’ projects, develop a very strong portfolio while studying and a rare opportunity to be immersed in innovative local and international design, surrounded by the industry’s best.
Lead Designer: Chantelle McIntyre Chantelle’s design was the chosen final design for the event entrance.
The Inspiration “The inspiration behind the entrance feature was the impact the Covid 19 pandemic had on the design industry. As a new designer, finding inspiration had become truly difficult. Being confined to my home, I struggled to find tactile and creative motivation, was unable to connect with industry professionals or visit showrooms. In 2022, Interiors Australia + DENFAIR is well placed to be an exciting reemergence for many in the design industry, and to once again be able to have those tactile experiences we’ve all missed over the past 2 years. My hope for the visitors of Interiors Australia + DENFAIR is as they enter through the arch, is that they “Enter Curious” and “Leave Inspired”. The inspiration for the profile is “Home” as our homes were a safe haven and we relied on our communities throughout the past 2 years, therefore the three-house profile represents both home and community.” - Chantelle McIntyre

ELECTROLIGHT LIGHTING INSTALL ATION
Panic Room Feeling overwhelmed from the barrage of stalls? Inbox filling up with emails? The sheer volume of information we are expected to digest every day is forever increasing – and the attention we give to direct & live communication, collaboration and our conscious self is continually diminishing. The ‘Panic Room’ is not a trade fair stall, it’s a space created for guests to escape and relax.
The Inspiration Panic Room removes you from the typical trade fair offering – the influx of information, technology and stimuli – and looks to provide opportunity for collaborative immersion in an environment deliberately disengaged from the crowds, noise and bustle, reconnecting you to nature and encouraging oneon-one communication. Drop your phone into the ‘Camp-Fire’ for charging, settle into a beanbag and just … chill out. Strike up conversation with your friends & colleagues in an environment filled with soothing colour and space. Take time to observe how your mood alters with the changing light and how this enhances your interaction with both your creative thoughts and your colleagues. Just leave your phones alone – please.
The Hero Products Electrolight collaborative partners Newmat provided their signature stretch fabrics, along with the stall fabrication, enhanced with lighting provided by Litesource. The stretch fabric elements include both translucent light transmitting, translucent printed and opaque reflective mirror to create an aesthetic that transcends the immediate volume, a connection to nature and our relationship with light. Litesource provided RGBW light sources and controls which provide sensory immersion to envelop the space and enhance energy, clarity of thought, creativity and collaboration.

Ar tichoke Lounge by Markian
Bold, Modern, Minimal: Exactly what you can expect from Markian. They say you can’t judge a book by its cover, but what about a magazine? The Artichoke cover showcases exactly what’s beneath its surface. Formulaic in nature, a hero image and its corresponding texture is wrapped in a colour-saturated cover, accented with the iconic Artichoke lettering. This blueprint is what makes Artichoke so distinctive and enticing. Drawing upon the elements of the Artichoke cover – hue, texture, and form – and translating them into a physical space has been the inspiration for the Markian x Artichoke Lounge. We’ve collaborated with some of Australia’s biggest suppliers, Dulux, Marblo, Forbo and Laminex, to showcase and reflect the best Australia has to offer in interior design.
Top: Markian’s inaugural range features the same shape as the Artichoke spliced ‘o’ making the connection between brand and magazine aesthetically coherent. Bottom: Markian Founders: Justin Barrett, Chris Mckenzie, Roz de Waal and Andrew Barrett

Interiors Australia + DENFAIR | 2022 Event Guide
PARTNER FEATURE
Lead Designer: Roz de Waal, Markian The Inspiration Taking cue from both the Australian landscape, and Artichoke cover colours, the colour palette feels iconically Australian, which feels fitting considering Artichoke is one of Australia’s most respected interior architecture and design magazine. Beginning with Dulux’s Russet Tan, inspired by issue 75, we’re taken on a journey to Australia’s red centre where Uluru, and the iron-rich rusting rocks create the red dirt so synonymous with our country. From there, we see the colour of issue 70, and Dulux Treeless, in the pink of the saline Lake Hellier, in the breasts of the native Galah, the clay of the earth, and splashed across the sky at sundown. Australia’s lush, leafy rainforests, eucalyptus leaves, and green pastures made Dulux Black Water and issue 60 the next obvious choice. And finally, influenced by issue 60 we settled on Dulux’s Vast Escape, evoking our beautiful beaches and the relentless sunshine that Australia is known for. With this in mind, we created a custom Marblo by Markian material, consisting of a smattering of chips in this colour palette, which is used as a subtle thread throughout the space. These colours each feature on one of the seating options of the stand, a circular bench with a central pillar, a half arch that can be lounged on, a half circle with upholstery and space to place merchandise and an arch way with perchs that allow for a delineation from the lounge area and the coffee station. “Akin to the cover of Artichoke, we’ve used different textures and finishes to further enhance the sensory experience of the space. Juxtaposing luxuriously soft Warwick fabrics with smooth, hard colour drenched highlights the same contrasting qualities of the gloss and satin on Artichoke’s cover. The archway between the logo will be clad in Laminex Burnt Ochre. This archway features space to stack Artichoke releases and will tie into the ‘cover’ behind.” - Roz de Waal, Markian Looking at the Artichoke typography as reference, the cut-off ‘O’ on the cover is a familiar motif for the Markian brand. The namesake of our inaugural range, Vieira, meaning scallop in Spanish, has seen us interpret the different elements of the shell throughout the collection. This overlap between Artichoke and Markian has informed the smooth arches, symmetry, and grooved edges found in the furniture and custom pieces of the stand. Markian has taken this design intent further with Issue 77s Dulux Pax inspired hue on the wallpaper, featuring the magazine masthead with subtle textural elements to inspire and delight.

The immersive foam installation is designed by Arthur Koutoulas and the material is supplied by Joyce Foam and carpet is by EC Carpets. EXCELLENCE IN SUSTAINABLE DESIGN
C ult i vated Almost a year after the launch of Cult’s sustainability program, Cultivated returns to the spotlight with a dedicated installation at Interiors Australia + DENFAIR 2022. Through an exhibition of new projects and collaborations, Cultivated invites you to consider new possibilities for end-of-life furniture, whilst unveiling thought-provoking innovations in its waste stream strategies. Each year in Australia, the equivalent of 800,000 three-seater sofas, 1.65 million dining tables or 3.4 million coffee tables, are thrown away.* Cultivated believe that one of the best strategies for sustainable living is to make and buy things that last. From a single lounge chair in need of new upholstery, to an entire office space of worn-out seating, Cultivated work with local manufacturers and craftspeople to restore, reinvigorate or recycle original design, creating a sustainable circular economy for authentic furniture and lighting. Cultivated aims to: •
Minimise the use of finite resources.
•
Minimise the extraction of raw materials including iron ore, timber and cotton.
•
Reduce the amount of landfill and incineration waste.
•
Prevent and avoid unnecessary pollution, greenhouse gas emissions and energy exerted in a products life cycle.
•
Reduce emissions from volatile organic compounds found in foams, fabrics, plastics, manufactured wood products and adhesives.
* Source: Authentic Design Alliance
C ult Lounge Designed for meeting, reflection and conversation, Cult’s curated lounge area at Interiors Australia + DENFAIR 2022 will be the launch pad for a new modular sofa system designed by Adam Goodrum. Based on a familiar favourite in the nau collection, Goodrum’s sofa introduces new possibilities for commercial lounging, whilst offering a place of respite for the busy event-goers itinerary.
Images: Refurbishment of a 10-year old Fritz Hansen Series 7 chair from the Art Gallery of NSW – a skilled team of carpenters sand back the aged lacquer before re-surfacing and re-painting. After sanding and re-surfacing, the veneer shell of the Fritz Hansen Series 7 is re-lacquered over a three-day period to ensure optimal drying time between coats.

At what cost do we accept beauty? Earp Bros is on a journey with Global GreenTag International (GGTI), submitting their beautiful, imported, high quality, wall and floor tile products to undergo a GGTI Modern Slavery Product Transparency Declaration (the GGTI MSD™).
“When Global GreenTag approached us to become the First Australian manufacturer to take up the Modern Slavery Declaration, we were humbled, but also felt a sense of responsibility - being transparent across all areas of our operations ensures our customers, manufacturing partners and team members can be confident in the ethical approach we take to business. We would challenge all Australian suppliers to join us on this journey and become a Modern Slavery Innovator.” - Josh Earp, Earp Bros Marketing Manager
