OUR MISSION We believe the arts are essential to a complete human experience and to the creation of a vibrant, healthy community. TCAN serves the Metrowest region by increasing opportunities to experience, participate in, and learn about the arts. To this end, TCAN strives to present arts programs of the highest standard that are available to everyone. TCAN dedicates its resources to providing community access to diverse arts programs, reducing barriers to attendance, and building appreciation through arts education.

ANNUAL REPORT 2013 By any measure, 2013 was a very good year for the TCAN community. We were pleased to present a strong calendar of performances in our 16th year. The success of TCAN’s popular music series in recent years gave us the confidence to invite new and more prominent artists to our stage. The response from our audience was tremendous, and many new patrons were introduced to our intimate venue in Natick Center. Working with a talented team of graphic designers and software developers, we created a new and rebranded website, incorporating many suggestions from TCAN patrons. Our new home on the web is familiar to those who have visited the Firehouse, and has a similar “sense of place”. It’s much easier to locate the events and programs you’re most interested in. And for TCAN staff, the website pages and content are much easier to maintain. We hope you feel the results were worth the effort. We are proud of the impact we are making on the surrounding community. We continue to be actively involved in plans for development of Natick Center Cultural District as a regional destination for the families of MetroWest. Behind the scenes, we began laying the groundwork for the Generations Capital Campaign. The Campaign’s success will enable us to expand our programming and better sustain the organization for generations to come (read more on page 9 of this report). We assembled a task force, agreed on a schedule and milestones and engaged an architect in preliminary design work. We are grateful to those of you who contributed or pledged your early support for the Campaign in 2013. Thank you to our members, patrons and sponsors and to our dedicated staff and volunteers – the TCAN community. I deeply appreciate your support and hard work that has allowed our community to thrive and grow. We could not do it without you.

A LANDMARK YEAR OF GREAT PERFORMANCES The Center for Arts in Natick delivered more diversity and a greater emphasis on quality programming during our 2013 season, as we continued to program for a wide range of tastes, backgrounds and age groups. Iconic mainstream artists of classic rock and pop included Christopher Cross, Peter Wolf, Rickie Lee Jones and Dave Mason. Emerging artists of the current generation were represented by Ed Kowalczyk of LIVE, songwriters Vanessa Carlton and Vienna Teng, American Idol finalist Crystal Bowersox and many others. TCAN hosted over 75 of these Featured Headliner performances on our stage, attended by over 15,000 patrons from throughout New England.

April 19-21 Directed by David Krentzman This two-man show was adapted by Jeffrey Hatcher and author Mitch Albom from his bestselling novel. It is an autobiographical story of a career driven journalist who reunites with his former college professor, who is fighting Lou Gehrig’s Disease. This leads to a weekly pilgrimage where the elder shares wisdom with Mitch about the meaning of life.

BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER Community theater enriches the lives of those who engage in it, whether they are audience members, actors, cast and crew, supporters or sponsors. In 2013, the TCAN Players offered a gateway to new worlds of experience, emotion and knowledge. Agatha Christie’s suspenseful mystery The Mousetrap attracted record audiences. The comedy-fantasy Improbable Fiction by Alan Ayckbourn brought together a cast of MetroWest region’s most celebrated actors. The season closed with a blockbuster production of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, with music and lyrics by Natick’s own William Finn. TCAN founding member and veteran actor Jay Ball joined his son, seasoned professional actor Alan Ball, for a limited engagement of Mitch Albom’s powerful play Tuesdays With Morrie. The sold-out performances were met with wide acclaim.
COMMUNITY INCREASING ARTS PARTICIPATION Fostering greater involvement in the arts has always been at the core of TCAN’s access-driven mission. By supporting local artists, actors and musicians of all ages, we encourage their creativity while making it possible for a larger community to enjoy and appreciate their work. Rock Off Main Street, New England’s longest running all-ages music program for teens, draws bands from MetroWest and Greater Boston. The TCAN Folk Open Mic continues to provide a welcoming and supportive environment for local musicians to share their songs, stories and music. The Summer Street Gallery provided a venue for the region’s most talented visual artists and photographers.

ROCK OFF MAIN STREET
Rock Off Main Street is a monthly rock series featuring the region’s freshest teen bands. Through the ROM program, student musicians competed for a chance to win scholarships to Berklee’s Summer Programs. The four local bands who advanced to the final Rock Showdown were Insanity Plague (Needham/Wellesley), Centre St. (Natick, Holliston, & Sherborn), Novation (Natick), and Closer Than We Appear (Scituate). WALNUT HILL SCHOOL FOR THE ARTS
Among several program collaborations with TCAN, Walnut Hill’s Musical Theater Teen Intensive is a processbased workshop for teens. The workshop provided an opportunity for local students to develop their talent with one of the best performing arts educators in the region, Kirsten McKinney.

YOUNG ARTISTS ON THEIR WAY The arts provide children with an opportunity to be more creative, successful and self-confident. As young audience members or performers, involvement in the arts helps young people learn to participate in society on healthy terms. Celebrating its 13th year in partnership with TCAN, Pocket Full of Tales Theatre Company offered instruction for kids and teens who write, direct and perform in musical theatre workshops. TCAN expanded its partnership with Walnut Hill School for the Arts in Musical Theater Teen Intensive, under the professional direction of Walnut Hill faculty educators. Through its Family Series programming TCAN helped introduce live theatre and music to young children and their families. In 2013, an audience of over 2,200 children and their families attended Family Series events, from across 90 communities throughout New England.
FIREHOUSE PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE Early in 2013, TCAN’s Board of Directors voted to move forward with a renovation project to fully utilize the second floor of the Firehouse for expanded programming. The centerpiece of the plan calls for construction of a digital screening room, creating the first art house cinema in the MetroWest region. The project will also provide space for expanded education offerings, acoustic music performances, and public/private community functions. The Generations Capital Campaign, once completed, will accomplish three strategic objectives: provide funding for this exciting expansion project; retire outstanding capital debt from the Phase I construction, and establish a Capital Reserve Fund to support maintenance of our historic facility. By the close of 2013, TCAN supporters had pledged or contributed 40% of the $1.2M campaign goal.
PROJECT FEATURES The project will create a multipurpose performance space and digital screening room for 120 patrons on the second floor of the Firehouse facility. Features will include professional audio and stage lighting systems, digital projection equipment, a retractable screen and a portable stage. Multi-layered flooring will be installed for increased sound suppression between floors. The original wood trusses supporting the high ceiling will be retained to preserve the aesthetic nature of the space. Plans also call for an expanded concessions counter and the addition of new bathrooms for the convenience of our patrons. An exterior staircase will be constructed from the second floor to ground level, providing a second means of egress to meet local building codes. To improve energy efficiency, insulation will be added to the exterior roof and new window casings installed.

The Smile in Every Seat program makes a positive difference in our community by increasing access to the arts through these dedicated programs and activities. In partnership with several social service agencies in our region, TCAN distributes free tickets and tuition vouchers to members of our community facing economic hardship or with special needs. In 2013, TCAN distributed tickets to over 30 events, including Family Series events, feature concerts, and community theater productions. Scholarships were also granted for arts education classes and summer arts camps. TCAN’s partners in this program include these outstanding organizations: Natick Service Council Natick Community Services, Skyline Program South Middlesex Opportunity Council (SMOC), Joan Brack Adult Learning Center United Way of Tri-County “Our clients absolutely love the atmosphere at TCAN and enjoy every show that they have seen so far. It is difficult for us to find a place that is accommodating to our needs as well as appropriate for our age groups. ARTS AND CULTURE FOR EVERYONE By providing affordable arts programs in the heart of MetroWest, TCAN removes barriers to attendance and allows greater community participation. TCAN remains committed to engaging all people, including those with disabilities, and those who have experienced other barriers or challenges to engaging in the unique experience of live performance. Through donor contributions to the Smile in Every Seat program, people from all walks of life are given opportunities to experience music concerts, theater productions and arts education programs. Discounts are granted to seniors and students. Hundreds of free tickets are donated to local schools, community and civic organizations. Facility rental fees are subsidized for local nonprofit events and fundraisers. The facility is offered to music instructors for recital performances. These activities contribute directly to the vitality of our community and the vibrancy of the Natick Center Cultural District, of which TCAN is proud to be an institutional and cultural anchor.
