Annual Report 2011 We are deeply grateful to our members and patrons for supporting TCAN’s 14th season and celebrating so many exceptional events on the TCAN Firehouse stage. While together we faced a difficult economy, you came out in full force to experience some of the world’s finest jazz and blues musicians, rock superstars, and a mosaic of songwriters, comedians and instrumentalists.

Our Mission We believe the arts are essential to a complete human experience and to the creation of a vibrant, healthy community.

TCAN serves the Metrowest region by increasing opportunities to experience, participate in, and learn about the arts.

To this end, TCAN strives to present arts programs of the highest standard that are available to everyone.

TCAN dedicates its resources to providing community access to diverse arts programs, reducing barriers to attendance, and building appreciation through arts education.

TCAN continued its commitment to the talented artists in our own region by providing a venue for local musicians and visual artists, community theatre, all-ages teen concerts and open mic events. Through a wide variety of outstanding education and community outreach programs, we worked to cultivate the next generation of arts patrons. With the generous support of local sponsors, TCAN introduced Smile in Every Seat, a program that underwrote tickets for deserving individuals and families in our community. Access—for both performers and audience members—is central to our mission.

Partnerships enabled us to achieve a high standard of quality in our programming and production. We are especially indebted to these fine institutions that supported our work: Berklee College of Music, Walnut Hill School for the Arts, Morse Institute Library, Natick High School, Wellesley High School, Allegro Music School, and Boston Organ and Piano of Natick. We thank all of them for their creativity and generosity.

Finally, we are grateful to the many donors and sponsors who supported our programs. Your contributions were an integral reason why TCAN was able to provide a rich variety of affordable performances and classes. With your support, we were able to end the fiscal year with a balanced budget.

Creating an arts institution for generations to enjoy In our 14th year of presenting performances, TCAN enjoyed strong support from a broad regional audience who once again exceeded our own attendance projections. We overcame many challenges, including limitations of our sound, lighting and staging capabilities, to meet the technically demanding requirements of national touring artists and local rising stars. These achievements demonstrated the skill and ingenuity of the TCAN staff and volunteers, setting a new and higher standard of excellence. While it is difficult to choose highlights in a year as rich and varied as 2011, standout performances included a brilliant performance by Susan Werner made available as a CD release, an unforgettable evening with songwriter Shawn Colvin, and our new Young Masters Series featuring emerging talent on the international classical music scene.

Family Programs

Creating a more vibrant and healthy community School, artist and civic groups continued to view TCAN as a welcoming, supportive resource to showcase the civic spirit and best local talent in the Metrowest community. In particular, the TCAN Players established themselves as one of the region’s leading community theatre companies with award-winning comedy, drama and musicals.

Other artists, actors, opera singers, folk musicians, teen rockers, children’s performers, and schools utilized TCAN for open mic nights, music recitals, gallery space, and more. Performance tickets donated by TCAN to area groups boosted their fundraising initiatives. The Smile in Every Seat program provided free access to arts events at TCAN for economically disadvantaged families and individuals. Member support enabled TCAN to contribute to the greater community.

Arts Education

1875 Firehouse Facility

Preserving a historic community treasure Pocket Full of Tales Celebrated 11 years directing children ages 3-14 nearly 50 weeks of the year in afterschool and vacation musical theatre, advanced acting and LittleArtists programming.

Walnut Hill School TCAN and Walnut Hill School collaborated on “Acting the Song,” a process-based workshop for students 13-17 focusing on text and music analysis.

Natick High School TCAN hosted NHS fundraisers and performances by the NHS Jazz Ensemble and Honors music students who presented recitals required for academic credits.

The Television Workshop 8-week “Intro to TV & Modeling” taught by working professionals and designed for youth who want to build confidence and presentation skills.

Children’s Dance Theater Partnered with TCAN to offer dance classes to children and adults with an emphasis on proper technique and creative expression.

Creating a complete human experience TCAN arts education programming helped children and teens foster creativity and communication, initiate higher-order thinking, and build confidence and teamwork. Longtime partners Pocket Full of Tales and Walnut Hill School for the Arts allowed youth to benefit from their quality instruction with TCAN’s professional lighting and sound systems. Area schools utilized TCAN’s performance space to host fundraisers, shows and recitals on TCAN’s professional soundstage. These collaborations were foundational in creating a synergistic environment of diverse and high quality arts experiences that helped youth flourish personally and artistically.

As TCAN approaches a full decade since restoring the Firehouse as a performing arts center, we continue to invest in the care and maintenance of Natick’s historic 1875 Central Fire Station. In 2011, capital reserves were used to address repairs resulting from flood damage in the Firehouse basement, directly related to Hurricane Irene. Needed repairs to our HVAC systems were made to guarantee the comfort of our patrons. Upgrades to computers and networking equipment were also completed, replacing equipment originally installed in 2004. In addition, plans were developed to improve the theatre’s overall energy efficiency and address a number of postponed capital repairs.

DEBT REDUCTION Our financial priority on debt reduction allowed us to end 2011 with $405,263 remaining on Phase I construction loans, representing a reduction of 46% against the original 2003 principal. We continue to maintain strategic focus on accelerating the retirement of our debt, and have benefited from the generous support of our donors and business sponsors.

EXPANSION PLANS TCAN convened a reinstituted Building Committee in 2011 as a solid step towards completion of Phase II of the Firehouse renovation project. An expanded programming strategy for TCAN was also finalized that proposes use of the second floor as a 150-seat movie theatre and performance space, a café area and multipurpose function room. These exciting enhancements provide momentum to our plans for a second capital campaign, to be announced within the next year.

BOARD MEMBERS

Providing access to the arts for everyone Donations from our members and supporting organizations provide over 30% of the operating funds needed to deliver affordable arts and education programs at TCAN. Ticket sales and tuition alone cannot cover the rising costs of building maintenance, event production and rapidly changing technologies. Donor support helps keep the quantity, quality and diversity of TCAN’s programming high, while keeping ticket and program prices accessible.

MEMBERSHIP More than any other campaign or activity, individual membership makes the most difference in the fulfillment of our community-based mission. In addition to reducing ticket prices for all attendees, membership support allowed TCAN to offer our facilities to public school arts programs, community nonprofits and other local civic institutions. In 2011, TCAN’s membership expanded to 2,006 active members with leadership participation in Natick, Wellesley, Framingham, Wayland, Sherborn, Ashland and Needham.

TCAN members now represent over 161 cities and towns throughout New England, with 32% of members living outside the Metrowest region.

Our programming was made stronger in 2011 through increased support from corporate sponsors and local foundations. Contributions from Crowne Plaza Hotel of Natick and Boston Organ and Piano helped us maintain the highest possible production standards.

TCAN is especially grateful for the generous support received in 2011 for education programs and workshops (Nellie Mae Foundation, Fair & Yeager Insurance Co. and Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams), TCAN Players community theatre (Framingham Co-operative Bank), the Young Masters classical music series (Komack Family, Natick Cultural Council) and the teen music program Rock Off Main Street (Berklee College of Music Summer Programs).

Our belief that the arts benefit everyone compels us to seek support that increases access – including for those economically disadvantaged individuals and families in our community. Support from Berklee College of Music, Bose Corporation, Tilly & Salvy’s Bacon Street Farm, and the Rotary Club of Natick allowed us to launch Smile in Every Seat, a campaign dedicated to that purpose.

EVENTS TCAN Annual Benefit 2011 featured Grammy-winning artist Shawn Colvin and was attended by 270 supporters. Volunteers organized our sixth annual Golf Outing, hosted by Sassamon Trace Golf Course. Long time partner and community advocate Middlesex Savings Bank played a leadership role in sponsoring both these fundraising events, as it has for several years.
