OUR MISSION We believe the arts are essential to a complete human experience and to the creation of a vibrant, healthy community. tcan serves the metrowest region by increasing opportunities to experience, participate in, and learn about the arts. to this end, tcan strives to present arts programs of the highest standard that are available to everyone. tcan dedicates its resources to providing community access to diverse arts programs, reducing barriers to attendance, and building appreciation through arts education.

1997 ANNUAL REPORT 2018 Dear Friends, We celebrate 2017 as TCAN’s 20th anniversary, remembering when a small group of volunteers first dreamed of creating an arts space that would “allow us to meet, understand, and accept each other.”

Much has changed since TCAN presented local jazz bands and open mic nights in a 70-seat storefront, but our values remain the same.

We are committed to offering a diverse variety of arts programs that includes local talent. We are committed to accessible and affordable programming that appeals to audiences of all ages. Most importantly, we remain committed to quality – presenting programs of the highest artistic standard possible that exceeds expectations of what can be done in a small, intimate venue.

TABLE OF CONTENTS The highlights of 2017 were much more than events to commemorate our birthday, they were milestones in the continuing story of our growth.

In late 2016, programs were suspended for several weeks to allow TCAN to complete a long-planned facility renovation.

This included creation of a cinema room and a total redesign of the lobby, box office and concession area, resulting in a larger and more comfortable space for our patrons and members.

Entering 2017 with the renovation now completed, we presented 178 performances featuring a wide variety of talented artists including Kathy Mattea, Sam Bush and Delta Rae. These mainstage events, together with community programs attracted more than 22,000 patrons in 2017.

We expanded programming with our new digital cinema, screening 65 films to an audience of nearly 5,000 moviegoers.

These screenings, which included new releases, Oscarnominated films, documentaries and classics attracted new patrons and contributed to a new peak in annual attendance.

We made a strong team even stronger by recruiting Nicola Anderson as Cinema Program Director, Josh Valentine as Front-of-House Manager and Libby Smelker as Development Associate. TCAN’s Board of Directors elected Michael Collins as it new Board Chair, and added Steve Wilson, Edward Strickland, Thomas Halchuk, David Parish and Stephen Kaplan to the Board.

Finally, our Generations Capital Campaign reached $1,440,404 in donations, allowing us to complete the renovation without adding a penny to existing debt. We continue fundraising to retire our remaining debts from the 2003 renovation and address needed capital improvements.

SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE Our 2017 season pushed new musical boundaries, with diverse artists appealing to a broad range of age groups and musical styles. Younger audiences enjoyed performances by Cowboy Junkies, Delta Rae, The Church, songwriter Anais Mitchell and Latin jazz star Harold López-Nussa, while those with a taste for classic rock came out to support Martin Barre ( Jethro Tull), Jim Messina (Loggins & Messina), Dave Davies (The Kinks) and crowd favorite Tom Rush. TCAN’s pro audio and lighting systems, underwritten by Middlesex Savings Bank and Foundation for MetroWest, make it possible to attract top touring artists to TCAN’s intimate venue.

Under the direction of program director Faye Harrington, the TCAN Players have presented community theater in Natick since 2001. Past productions have been recognized with a long list of awards for local actors, directors, and crew. The TCAN Players 16th season was highlighted

by Matthew Barber’s romantic comedy Enchanted April, with innovative direction by Kevin Groppe, Head of Performing Arts at the Dana Hall School in Wellesley, MA. Audiences were also treated to the classic play The Lion in Winter, directed by Sue Kim Lucchini, and the musical They’re Playing Our Song, directed by Russell Greene. For the eighth consecutive year, MutualOne Bank provided sponsorship underwriting for the TCAN Players.

SUPPORTING LOCAL TALENT TCAN supported local artists in 2017 by providing a variety of opportunities to perform and participate in the arts. Young children and their families enjoyed energetic musical performances, puppet theatre, jugglers and magic. Performers of all ages supported TCAN’s Folk Open Mic hosted by songwriter Mark Stepakoff of Wellesley. Visual art exhibits at TCAN by talented local artists and artisans provided greater visibility to their work and added cultural depth to live performances. Program Director Diane Young celebrated 20 years of Rock Off Main Street all-ages shows at TCAN with a grand finale featuring musicians who performed at ROM events since 1997.

NATICK’S ART HOUSE CINEMA Following a five-year fundraising campaign, TCAN completed a striking renovation of its upper level to create the region’s first art house cinema screening room. Our grand opening featured the Academy Award-winning film West Side Story, remastered in widescreen and glorious 8-channel HD sound. The screening room attracted nearly 5,000 patrons in 2017 who enjoyed Oscar-nominated new releases, documentaries and foreign films. In an exclusive Boston-area partnership with BroadwayHD, TCAN presented filmed performances of live stage productions including the Broadway musical She Loves Me and Macbeth – Live at Stratford Festival.

In spring of 2019, TCAN will host its first annual MetroWest Student Film Festival to provide recognition for young writers, directors and filmmakers ages 14-19 in the MetroWest region. By extending our community programming to cinema, TCAN will continue to deliver on its mission of increasing opportunities to experience, participate in and learn about the arts.

GENERATIONS CAPITAL CAMPAIGN After years of study and strategic planning, our organization took a significant step forward in 2013 by launching the Generations Capital Campaign, with its goal to establish TCAN as a strong and sustainable organization capable of serving the region years into the future. The Generations Capital Campaign identified three key objectives required to meet that goal: • Utilize the entire Firehouse facility to deliver arts programs, including the upper level floor.

• Retire all long-term debt related to the 2001 purchase and renovation of the facility.

• Establish the financial reserves necessary to protect and preserve the entire facility.

In late 2016, we met our first objective by completing a $1.3M renovation of the facility, creating a multipurpose function space that serves as an art house cinema screening room, function room and performance space.

TCAN’s lobby was completely redesigned, increasing our capacity to serve the high volume of patrons visiting our facility throughout the year.

TCAN is committed to expanding opportunities for everyone to experience, participate in and learn about the arts.

With the support of donor contributions, TCAN’s Access program provides ticket donations, ticket discounts, reduced-cost facility rental and program support to deserving families and organizations in the MetroWest region.

In 2017, TCAN donated tickets to local schools, church groups, nonprofit community organizations, and civic causes. TCAN hosted numerous events and fundraisers for local nonprofits and provided a venue for youth recitals.
