Outside of North America, the Middle East has been featured in the greatest number of Pulitzer-winning photographs. Most importantly, the vast majority of these photographs were taken after the September 11th attacks.
The War on Terror, particularly in Iraq, Lebanon, and Adghanistan, was featured heavily in United States media throughout the 2000s and 2010s. Conflict surrounding the Gaza strip has remained prevalent for even more decades due to American involvement in the establishment of Israel.
Unlike the Middle East, much of the war documented in Asia via the Pulitzer Prize emerged primarily in the 1970s because of the United States’s participation in the Vietnam War.
Another significant inclusion is coverage of continuous genocide and mass revolt within Myanmar. Other notable photographs include exclusive documentation of North Korea, Hong Kong protests in China, and an anthropology series on nuclear bomb survivors in Japan.
