YEAR ONE - SEMESTER 2
ARCHITECTURE
Dr. Jessica Wolff
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY PROJECT ONE
This project entails investigation, analysis, two- and three-dimensional representation of the abstract, formal, tectonic, and spatial characteristics of a select group of 20th Century and contemporary houses. This research and analysis will include an ongoing dialog of design ideas, leading to an understanding of ways in which theory and practice are related in the conceptualization and construction of exemplary architecture. The project studied included expressions of several key spatial conceptions of Modernism, Post-Modernism and contemporary movements in design. This project focuses on the vacation home of Edith Farnsworth designed by Mies Van Rohe as a case study.
PROJECT TWO
The task of this part is to produce beautiful objects based on the critical reading of the house and develop conceptual drawings. Models were created based on analysis of the house, focusing on the color and material palette of the house – from interior to landscape. An exploration of the implications of these phenomena in the reading of space and form. PROJECT THREE This project will involve creating a small community in East Falls for a short stay (1 to 3 months). Small cabins on campus, better than a hotel room, but certainly temporary shelter. While on campus, these cabins will interact with the university community and physical campus. The owners of the case study houses will be funding one of these small cabins. Each owner asked that their cabin represent the design ideals of their own home; it will be a remote companion to the mother house. These cabins will be for one person, fully furnished, allowing a comfortable, but not extravagant life. These cabins will relate to each other, the land, and their mother house. The concepts produced in this project drew influnence from the individuals involved. The client, Edith Farnsworth, description of the structure as an “Elegant Bird Cage” and Mies Van Rohe’s German Heritage.

Infared Site Plan
- This concept highlights the heat and human circulation relation. Numerous heat signiatures surround the structure to admire the work whilst an individual resides inside.
Elegant Bird Cage - influenced by client and various 1950s German graphic designs
German Bauhaus - Bauhaus diagram pays homage to Van Rohe’s nationality and German art genre
Infared Structure - Infared diagrams inspired by the structure’s unique heating system
Infared Human Activity
ABSTRACTION Abstract Bird Model - Inspired by client, Edith Farnsworth’s perspective on living within structure -Basswood/Origami Model

PIONEERING DESIGNER A short (5 to 6 minute) presentation about the work of a pioneering designer Diane Jones Allen’s place in architecture/design history and her ground breaking practice
Documents Diane Jones Allen raising awareness for residents of Gordan Plaza (toxic residential area) and establishing an organization that has relocated residents and infleunced the city to restore the site while outlawing contruction on prior landfill sites.
REFLECTION PROJECT ONE
This project introduced me to a range of various architects and their crafts allowing me to focus on Mies Van Rohe’s works. I was provide with the opportunity to understand how to analyze architecture and the features that contribute to the overall structure. The Farnsworth House specificly forged a unqiue double-edged relationship with its environment involving flooding but this also gives the home an identity. I will continue to analyze interesting relationships between structure and their environment similar to this.
PROJECT TWO
This project relied mostly on conceptual thinking given the abstract nature of the prompt. I learn how to understand the mindset of the architect and occupants while using the structure as a medium to communicate with thought process of the individuals involved. This allowed me to find a variety of concepts to incoporate into my diagrams and model. PROJECT THREE This project was foreshadowed by the prior two and allowed for a smooth transition. Being able to understand the various perpectives of those involved with the house provide a significant boost in creating the Bird House concept. Where as the technical aspects give me a foundation on the specifics that identify the house and what improvement are able to be added espeically the privacy flaws.
PIONEERING DESIGNER
Each Designer featured came with their own influence on the profession of architect. Learn about these influencers with different backgrounds provide a wide range to draw from and incorprate into my own works.

CONCEPT COLLAGE This project entails investigation and analysis of the a building inside the Philadelphia area. Tasked to conduct multiple site visits documenting the environment to generate a concept for a series of collages. The main focus of this project will be the Symphony House in Philadelphia on Broad Street. After studing the site, the concept became the Culture surrounding South and Broad Street.
Collage 1 - Documents the busy lifesytle on Broad Street.
Collage 2 - Highlights the cultures of South St. meeting those on Broad St.

PHILADELPHIA-KYOTO This next project required the analysis of a Philadelphia neighborhood and a district in Kyoto, Japan. These areas were analysized through three forms of data and documented in a manner that follows a thesis. The specific project will explore the relations between high density traffic and public transit. Areas studied will be Fairmount/Brewery Town/Sharwood and Fushimi District.
PHILADELPHIA-KYOTO Philadelphia Traffic Density Map
Fushimi Traffic Density Map
- Density map of F/B/S displaying keypoints of area that influence the thesis.
- Displays keypoint within the district espically large population of commerical buildings that attract tourists that commute via public transit.
PHILADELPHIA-KYOTO Philadelphia Collage
Fushimi Collage
- Depicts a crowd of elderly pedestrians moving away from public transit toward personal vehicles.
- Displays youthful pedestrians departing from tourist market towards public transit that supports the sustainability trend
