I want to first thank everyone who was able to attend the Convention in March at the Hyatt Regency in Coralville. It was another fantastic event, with our largest attendance of athletic directors to date. This speaks volumes to the quality of opportunities provided by the LTI courses, speakers, and sessions offered consistently from year to year. It also shows a strong sense of comradery and support for the athletic directors and administrative assistants who find continued value investing in the face-to-face experience. We know that it can be a difficult task to leave the office and your hosted events, and many of you traveled from the far corners of the state. A big thank you also goes out to our many corporate sponsors and the vendors who help us take our event to the next level each year! I very much look forward to serving our organization as the 2022-2023 President.

I believe we have a strong Executive Board that values representing members of all different types of school districts from across the state. In recent years we have added more roles to our board in order to better serve the growing needs of our organization on the fronts of additional LTI coursework, mentorship opportunities, and social media communication. Our board is a group committed to service and listening to the wants and needs of our members. We know the daily hardships presented within our educational system and look forward to being visionaries and

In closing, I’d like to personally thank you all for the work you do for your students, coaches, and communities each day. Every year that passes, I am grateful for the building of more and more relationships that have come to mean so much to me. I am also honored to be entrusted to lead this organization and follow in the footsteps of many great leaders ahead of me. I am inspired to be a catalyst for change and find new ways to stretch ourselves in the most positive of directions. Serving this group has always been a labor of love, and there is much good work to be done! Here's to finishing the school year strong and with a smile on our faces! Be well friends!

EXECUTIVE director’s message 2022 State Convention Overview The 54th State Convention has passed and I will give you some of the highlights. Brent Buttjer, 2nd Vice President from Dallas Center-Grimes, was the coordinator for this year’s convention and did a great job!! Thanks to all our Board Members and District Officers for their work on this year’s convention. The evaluation of our state convention has started by accumulating the results of our Post Convention Survey, meeting with the Executive Board, and the District Directors later this month. Listed below is some of the feedback/information gathered: Our convention attendance figure was the highest in recent history with over 400 attendees made up of members, retired athletic directors, guests and administrative assistants. 75 Past Presidents, Retired ADs, and guests attended the “Past President’s Night” on Saturday, March 26th honoring the leadership of the IHSADA over the past 53 Years. The Coralville Business & Visitors Bureau sponsored gift bags for all, financial support, and hosted the IHSADA members at the Coralville Heartlanders Professional Hockey Game by providing game tickets to all members and hosting a hospitality area at the game.

Convention Highlights are: Congratulations to Ken Schreiber, Athletic Director at Council Bluffs St. Albert Catholic School, named the High School Athletic Director of the Year!! Congratulations to Holly Anderson of Ankeny Centennial Northview, who was named Middle School Athletic Director of the Year!! The 2022 Hall of Famers are: the late Ken Beverlin of Boone, Jeffery Cook of Pleasantville, Judge Johnston of Ames, Scott Kibby of Iowa City West, David Litterer of Waverly-Shell Rock and Steve Watson of Dallas Center-Grimes. Congratulations to all!! Three new ADs gained the AD Emeritus Award. They are: Larry Moklestad of Boone, Mitch Osborn of Harlan and Marv Reiland of Iowa City West. Congratulations for your years of service. This award is for ADs with a combination of years of active service and years as a member of the IHSADA which accumulates to a minimum of 65 years total. The Keynote speaker was Dr. Joe San Felleippo of Falls Creek, WI. Joe’s message “Be Intentional… Open Doors…Build Momentum. Every.Single.Day”. He centered around three key elements of leadership, communication and determination. The IHSADA welcomed 39 Administrative Assistants to the convention for a day of professional development and camaraderie. Connie McGinnis of Shenandoah and Terri Weeks of Ballard were named Administrative Assistants of the Year. The Vendor Hall, under the leadership of our Business Manager, Mike Linde of Van Meter, was well received by our membership. A record 93 exhibitors provided a wide range of learning opportunities for our membership and the vendor hall is a great opportunity to network with Iowa athletic directors from around the state.

The “Popcorn Sessions” were well received. These are 3 sessions lasting 30 minutes with the membership taking part in 3 of 5 sessions with a 10 minute passing period. The more popular sessions were 1. Esports, 2. Hiring, Evaluating and Improvement Plans, and 3. Challenges Facing Strength and Conditioning Programs.

Our Mini Sessions received strong support from our membership. Determining what to offer for future convention mini-sessions will be determined by a survey of current topics and suggestions coming from our membership. Please contact Conference Representatives, District Officers, Board Members or the Executive Director with suggestions. The move to local presentations of our Media, Administrator, Medical and Volunteer Awards was implemented 3 years ago and it has been very well received. There is more community service recognition when these awards are presented at a home event in front of their home crowd. Tom Keating of the IHSAA & Jean Berger of the IGHSAU opened the Convention with an update from each organization with an emphasis on restoring a degree of normalcy in their operation. Discussion of Dragon Fly was noted and it is here to stay at present. Review of coaching and officials continues to be a hot topic. The Legal Issues by Matt Carver was very informative with key issues facing our schools like mental health, the transfer rule, transgender accommodation and official and coaching shortages. The Hyatt Regency staff went above and beyond to make our stay comfortable. Food and accommodations received some of our highest marks on our Post Convention Survey!! Some suggestions we received from our membership are: To analyze the programs presented at our State Convention. To encourage Iowa High School ADs from schools of all sizes to share topics during our Mini-Sessions and Popcorn Sessions. To encourage Iowa High School ADs to nominate students for the IHSADA Student Scholar Program. To seek greater involvement for our Retired ADs. To evaluate the time schedule of the convention. Items the IHSADA would like to see from our membership: More “ALL IN” Conferences. (19 Conferences of 41 represented in 2022). Better attendance at our banquets. These banquets are meant to recognize leadership and service to your students, school, and community. They deserve your support and attendance!! Increase the number of nominations for the Awards Program of the IHSADA. All nomination forms are to be found on the IHSADA Website. Improve communication with our members, our Conference Representatives, District Directors, Executive Board and the Executive Director. Improve the relevancy of all our topics in our General Sessions, Mini-Sessions and Popcorn Sessions. Next year’s State Convention will be held on March 25th thru March 28th. Hope to see you there!!

**Special thanks to Tom Lipovac for recognizing this tremendous opportunity!! In the convention program, Ken Beverlin’s CAA certification was inadvertently omitted on the Hall of Fame page. At the 1988 National Athletic Directors Conference in Las Vegas, Ken tested to be a CAA. He received notice of his attainment of CAA designation shortly before his death in 1989. He was a member of the first class to complete the NIAAA CAA program. The IHSADA ADvisor apologizes for this oversight. The Editor

This was a national, concerted effort of the NIAAA and the IHSADA by the National Initiative and Assistance Network. “Make-A-Wish” gives 94.4% of donated money directly to the children and their families.

UPDATE: A total of $ 1,180 was raised at the convention for MakeA -Wish. A huge and appreciated thank you to all who contributed!!!

First corporation to sponsor the 1st IHSADA printed convention program…1970

Coca-Cola Bottlers of Iowa Sports Law Issues Impacting School Athletics Programs Constitutional Rights of Student-Athletes In cases involving the suspension of a student-athlete for violating athletic department or team codes of conduct, increasing numbers of lawsuits have been filed alleging a violation of the young person’s constitutional and civil rights. A student-athlete suspended for inappropriate criticism of a coach often challenges claiming a violation of his or her First Amendment freedom of speech. A suspension for attendance at a party where alcohol is served often results in a First Amendment freedom of assembly challenge. Suspension for failing a drug test often brings a Fourth Amendment search and seizure challenge. A suspension for misbehavior often results in a Fifth/Fourteenth Amendment due process challenge. A suspension alleged to be more severe than that given to other students for the same offense often brings a Fourteenth Amendment equal protection challenge. In order to proactively ensure that sanctions against studentathletes withstand judicial scrutiny, school and athletics personnel must have a thorough understanding of the interpretation by courts of constitutional rights in sports settings.

What suggestions would you make to improve future State Conventions? Good Work! Inky Johnson, Joshua Medcalf—Guest Speakers Longer time for the "popcorn sessions" Great convention!!! Thank you! Vary the menu. N/A More mini sessions specific to the actual day to day operations of an AD. Ex: running track meets, working with secretaries/AD assistants, pre-season coaches meeting ideas, coaching handbooks, etc. Give a little synopsis of what the breakout session is going to be about Hear updates from the girls/boys. I would have gone to the Iowa woman’s game if I knew they were not going to do that. Feel like we can have it less spread out in general Speaker on AD best practices: how to maximize impact, time management strategies, more personal application/life improvement vs. Policies/procedures Keep tweaking time schedule More motivational speakers - lacking this year Continue with the popcorn sessions Popcorn topics were great. I would have liked to attend more of them and stayed longer in the ones I attended. I would like to see more breakout sessions to allow us to get to more of them Love to see more Iowa High School AD’s of all school sizes sharing on topics The changes made this year were well done. Lot's of dead time on Monday morning/afternoon Printed publications are so important to conventions. Make sure the main program and meal programs all have correct/ up-to-date information Popcorn sessions were much more interesting then the mini sessions. Look at different topics for mini sessions: such building a culture, management of your daily schedule, using social media, strength and conditioning programs, how to use community relationships such as hospital or athletic training Improve the acoustics in vendor, hard to hear the major giveaways, maybe replace the mini sessions with popcorn sessions throughout the conference Everything very good including the retired AD tour of the Iowa Hawkeye Hall of Fame (only two of us went, however). Give Matt Carver more time in the general session None - Great event! I don't have any suggestions The New AD workshop had topics I already new. I would have gone to a different session. Suggestion: send out a survey to see what topics the new ADs want guidance on Keep a variety of speakers and more breakout sessions. There seems to be a lot of large sessions recognizing people which is important but not as much time to hone skills Continue to invite multiple directors from each district. Especially the MS directors so they can help develop their programs to align with the HS Would love to see a session about recruiting and retaining officials and how we as AD's can assist that job Spend some money on a speaker such as Jon Gordon. Or a higher level coach/AD. Popcorn sessions were great! Maybe have different session on Sunday as some people are coming in. Love the location and venue Have the IGHSAU and IHSAA present some substance. Consider stuff with Poverty/Participation and Athletics Bring Dynamics into Keynote speakers. Some entertaining speakers can be fun and attractive! Popcorn sessions were by far the best, would like to see more presentations from current AD's to show off what they're doing in their schools so AD's can get more relevant information and more things they can take back and implement in their schools Have a motivational type speaker on Monday morning as our main keynote. I know it costs money, but at this time of year most ADs need some rejuvenation and encouragement It seems like most people are in such a hurry to get out of there on Tuesday- would it benefit ending it sooner on Tuesday? 30 minute popcorn sessions were nice- not too long, but long enough- Great job! Every Popcorn session is 30 minutes long with 3 opportunities to go to the 5 sessions. Great idea this last year I enjoyed the breakout sessions. I found these more beneficial than the large group presentations I really enjoy hearing current AD's speak about things they are currently doing at their schools. My only suggestion would be to continue to offer sessions where those AD's are speaking Great convention but need more things for retired AD’s s to do

“Issues Assembly Topics for Discussion” (Takes the place of the Cracker Barrel) Issue One - How to increase participation in athletics? Strategies to expand multi-sport athletes. Proposal: The IHSADA encourages all schools to promote the Idea of participation in high school activities/athletics. Promotions could be in the form of incentives such as a distinguished awards (letters, identification status) Multi-activity/sport Award banquets/meals, clubs, & such. Recognition and promotion on the State Level initiated by the IHSAA/IGHSAU. Issue Two - Recruiting and Retaining Coaches. Proposal: The IHSADA recognizes the need to recruit and retain coaches by the following: Streamlining the ability to gain a coaching license by encouraging the Department of Education and the Board of Educational Examiners to gain a temporary license and allow coaches to coach and gain licensure at the same time. Encouraging the greater use of the NFHS Learning Center. Coaches could be authorized by encouraging coaches become an NFHS accredited coach (AIC or CIC Program) Schools could be encouraged to provide financial incentives to support potential coaches. Advertise the need for coaches and to financially support potential coaches with registration, training, and educational opportunities. Issue Three - Recruiting and retaining officials Proposal: The IHSADA recognizes the need to recruit and retain officials by the following: The IHSADA supports streamlining the ability to gain a officials license by the IHSAA & the IGHSAU as one licensing agency for officials.

Encouraging the development of training courses that focus on dealing with behaviors of players, coaches, and spectators. Schools should be encouraged to provide financial incentives to support potential officials at the local level. Each school/conference should provide the IHSAA/IGHSAU with a name or names of prospective officials and be willing to provide some financial support for the prospective official and their registration with the state licensing organization. The IHSAA/IGHSAU, the IHSADA, Assigners, and schools should be willing to advertise the need for officials and to financially support potential officials with registration, training, and educational opportunities.

NFHS Attention Officials Promotion

I STILL HAVE ISSUES!!! Issue Four - Weigh in on two pieces of Legislation affecting Public and Private Education Proposal: The IHSADA opposes the adoption of the following pieces of legislation being considered in the 2022 Legislative Session. Senate File: 2239 It is proposed to not allow schools to charge admission to anyone under 18 years of age at HS or lower level athletic and activity events. Rationale: Charging admission to those under the age of 18 is not considered a right or privilege when it comes to attending school events. School activity funds may not operate with a positive balance and need to have a source of revenue to meet their needs. Schools should consider providing assistance to those students who have difficulty financially. Free and Reduced lunch status could provide a structure for providing for those who have difficulty with affordability. Senate File: 2139 It is proposed that states the open enrollment eligibility would go from 90 school days to 90 calendar days. Meaning a kid could gain open enrollment status in say May and be eligible the next fall. There are some inconsistencies with this as it pertains to transferring and open enrollment. Rationale: The IHSADA supports the idea of a student being able to transfer from one school to another with a period of ineligibility unless parent/guardian makes a physical move from one district to the district in question. The IHSADA does not support this piece of legislation

State Convention Protocol Having our State Convention "Issues Assembly" make formal recommendations to the IHSAA, the IGHSAU and other viable parties may be more impactful. At the State Convention “Issues Assembly”, each of the attendees would be assigned a small group based on Football classification. After the District Meetings, an “Issues Assembly” Select Committee was formed under the leadership of the 1st Vice President to consider the District “Issues Assembly” Proposals. Each Small Group of ADs (Grouped by the 7 Football Classifications) at the State Convention would consider the District "Issues Assembly" Proposals with Rationale. After proper discussion, the Small Groups will vote on each of the proposals. Proposals must pass by a 60% majority. After the Small Group “Issues Assembly,” the Executive Board or their representatives would compile the results and send the proposals to the full body of the State Convention for consideration as part of the IHSADA Business Meeting. After proper discussion at the Business Meeting, the full State Convention would vote electronically to support, reject, or amend the proposals. A vote of the General Assembly would be conducted electronically. Any supported proposal (60% support) will be shared in writing with the IGHSAU, the IHSAA, and other viable groups of interest. . Supported proposals will be posted on the IHSADA Website.

A Lighter Side... Dear Coach Musselman: Remembering our discussions of your football men who were having troubles in English, I have decided to ask you, in turn, for help. We feel that Paul Spindles, one of our most promising scholars, has a chance for a Rhodes Scholarship, which would be a great thing for him and for our college. Paul has the academic record for this award, but we find that the aspirant is also required to have other excellences, and ideally should have a good record in athletics. Paul is weak. He tries hard, but he has troubles in athletics. But he does try hard. We propose that you give some special consideration to Paul as a varsity player, putting him, if possible, in the backfield of the football team. In this way, he can show a better college record to the committee deciding on the Rhodes Scholarships. We realize that Paul will be a problem on the field, but—as you have often said—cooperation between our department and yours is highly desirable, and we do expect Paul to try hard, of course. During intervals of study, we shall coach him as much as we can. His work in the English Club and on the debate team will force him to miss many practices, but we intend to see that he carries an old football around to bounce (or whatever one does with a football) during intervals in his work. We expect Paul to show entire goodwill in his work for you and, though he will not be able to begin football practice till late in the season, he will finish the season with good attendance.
