from the parish from the PRESIDENT MAYOR Welcome to Natchitoches Parish. We are glad you are here! For more than 300 years, Natchitoches Parish has been a place where anyone can feel at home. I often tell folks, “I wasn’t lucky enough to be born here, but I got here as quick as I could!”

Natchitoches Parish is a great place to visit or live.

Our piney woods provide excellent outdoor recreation amenities and fuel our local economy.

We are home to global leaders in the timber industry, as well as other key economic drivers who have recently doubled down on their investment in our parish with millions in capital expansion. a cultural CROSSROADS The Cane River region is the proud birthplace of an entire culture: the Cane River Creoles. As Native American, French, Spanish, and African cultures merged during the founding of Natchitoches in 1714, it led to the development of this distinctive culture. The term “Creole” can describe one’s personal identity, a unique style of architecture, and time-honored food ways. Today, there is no better way to experience this culture than to visit the myriad of historic sites in and around Natchitoches Parish.

Cane River Creole National Historical Park, a unit of the National Park Service, represents a treasure trove of Creole Louisiana's historical and cultural riches. The park preserves the cultural landscapes of Oakland Plantation and Magnolia Plantation, two of the most intact Creole cotton plantations in the United States with over 60 historic structures between the two sites. The institution of enslavement and the act of emancipation left indelible imprints on many aspects of Cane River life, and the park has worked for many years to uncover the stories of all the people that lived at Oakland and Magnolia. Such contributions were recognized in 2022 when both plantations were listed as Network to Freedom sites, honoring enslaved people’s fight for freedom. To build upon this, the park offices are relocating to the historic Texas & Pacific Railway Depot with the intent to more fully interpret the African American experience along Cane River.

Cane River Creole National Historical Park is just one site along Cane River with a rich and diverse history. Nestled between Oakland and Magnolia Plantations along Highway 119 is Melrose Plantation, a National Historic Landmark that tells the story of world-famous African American folk artist Clementine Hunter. Across Cane River from Melrose Plantation is St. Augustine Catholic Church, the spiritual center and heart of the Cane River Creole community. Nearby along Highway 484 is the Badin-Roque House, the oldest surviving example of a Creole building style known as poteaux-en-terre (posts-in-ground) within the region. In Natchitoches, Fort St. Jean Baptiste State Historic Site depicts early life in the colonial French outpost, and farther afield, Los Adaes State Historic Site depicts early colonial Spanish life.

Together, the wealth of history at these historic sites is preserved as part of the broader Cane River National Heritage Area, an entity that promotes the region as a premier heritage tourism destination so more people can understand and celebrate our diverse and nationally important heritage.

feed YOUR SOUL Many know Natchitoches as home to the famous meat pie or the film location of Steel Magnolias, but Natchitoches has been a destination for travelers since 1714 and is full of culture and diversity. Natchitoches becomes the “City of Lights” from mid-November through the New Year during the Natchitoches Christmas Festival.

Throughout the year the town celebrates music, food, and culture with events and festivals, such as Natchitoches Meat Pie Festival, Melrose Arts & Crafts Festival, Zydeco & Jazz Festival, and even the Classic Car show.

Visitors and locals experience “Where History Lives” right in our backyard. They can follow the trails in Kisatchie National Forest and through the Cane River National Heritage Area to find centuries of history, culture, and natural landscapes that are ready to be explored by foot, car, or boat. They can also hike or bike the Grady Erwin Nature Trails or Longleaf Vista Trail or take in the scenic views along the Longleaf Scenic Byway and the Cane River National Heritage Trail.

Whether fishing in Cane River, Sibley Lake, Black Lake, or Red River, one can easily find why our parish is considered a sportsman’s paradise.

Kisatchie National Forest also offers fishing areas and a wealth of recreational activities such as horseback riding, kayaking, hiking, and camping.

The city itself sits within the Cane River National Heritage Area, a region known for Creole architec-

-ture and sites that preserve the multi-cultural history of the area. Cane River Creole National Historical Park is also located in the area, and is a national treasure that includes Oakland Plantation, considered the most complete Creole plantation in America, and Magnolia plantation, which houses the oldest wood screw cotton press in its original location in America.

For many, the thing you’ll love most about Natchitoches (aside from the famous meat pies) is the charming 33-block National Landmark Historic District—a shopper’s paradise and a bed & breakfast lover’s dream. The Historic District features beautiful architecture and attractions like Fort St. Jean Baptiste and the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame and Northwest Louisiana History Museum.

Today’s travelers learn of Natchitoches’ evolution through tremendous changes—from the course of a river, to time-honored Natchitoches traditions, and more. City of Natchitoches Sports The City of Natchitoches maintains a number of sports complexes that are available to residents. The City Pool offers swim lessons and open swim. Parc Natchitoches offers 5 turfed baseball/softball fields, 3 soccer fields, 1.5 miles of paved walking track and a stocked pond. East Natchitoches complex offers 6 baseball/softball fields, tennis courts, and playground equipment. 6 pocket parks offer play ground equipment, outdoor basketball courts and picnic areas. Northwestern State University sponsors 14 NCAA Division I sports programs. A proud member of the Southland Conference, the Demons and Lady Demons host events at seven on-campus facilities—Turpin Stadium (football), Prather Coliseum (basketball and volleyball), Brown-Stroud Field (baseball), Lady Demon Diamond (softball), the Walter Ledet Track Complex, the Jack Fisher Tennis Complex and the Lady Demon Soccer Complex. A City of Champions

Northwestern State has captured dozens of conference championships while producing NFL and Major League Baseball standouts. The Demons have appeared in the I-AA/FCS football playoffs six times, reaching the 1998 national semifinals. NSU’s men’s basketball team has twice won games in March Madness, including a stirring 2006 upset of 15thranked Iowa. Northwestern track and field competitors have won three NCAA event championships, most recently Jasmyn Steels’ 2019 indoor long jump triumph. Two Demons, LaMark Carter (2000) and Kenta Bell (2004, 2008) have represented the USA in the Olympic Games. Natchitoches Central High School has fielded some of the best boys and girls basketball teams in Louisiana for many years—notably launching the career of Basketball Hall of Fame member Joe Dumars, now one of the NBA’s top administrators— and has produced championship track and field athletes and teams. Saint Mary’s High School has an excellent small-school athletic program, noted for perennial success in football and baseball and a 2020 state championship in girls basketball.

The Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame (LSHOF) and

Northwest Louisiana History Museum celebrates local culture and features the state’s incredible sports history, including accomplishments by Louisiana athletes, coaches and sports stars. Some inductees are household names, such as Peyton Manning, Terry Bradshaw, Shaquille O’Neal and Chanda Rubin, with superstars such as Eli Manning, Drew Brees, and Semoine Augustus due to enter soon. A scrapbook of Pete Maravich’s LSU basketball career, a Super Bowl XLIV commemorative football signed by all 53 New Orleans Saints after their 2010 victory and the fastest car in the world in 1963—a souped-up Ford Thunderbird—are just a few of the exhibits that make visiting the museum an unforgettable experience. The building itself is remarkable, named the No. 1 new architectural project in the world when it opened in 2013. Each summer, the LSHOF enshrines a dozen new legendary athletes, coaches, administrators and sports journalists in a three-day Induction Celebration. Fishing & Hunting

How good is the fishing around here? Johnny Cash once owned a bait shop on Front Street. Years later, anglers are ever-present on Red River and Cane River Lake, and a myriad of fishing tournaments are held annually, along with some sanctioned high school, collegiate and professional events. From bream to catfish and bass, an array of species present exciting opportunities for anglers of all ages. The waterways also provide ample recreational boating and water sports choices. The area’s piney woods are prime territory for hunters to pursue game including deer and squirrel, and the many waterways are appealing not only for anglers, but for duck hunters – and even alligators.

celebrating CREATIVES Music echoes throughout the courtyard of the Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) Building at Northwestern State University (NSU) and the quad outside of the Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts (LSMSA), where students are pursuing their dreams. Brightly colored canvases line the windows of historic Front Street, where galleries and shops display local artists' original works. Live music can be found at several local restaurants most weekends. Costumed folk dancers preserve tradition and delight crowds at seasonal festivals. Creative communities throughout Natchitoches share a passion for the rich history and natural beauty that inspires the creative mind. Art and the celebration of artists are interwoven into every aspect of life in Natchitoches.

The orchestra program at NSU Middle Lab School begins cultivating an appreciation of musical ability in students at a young age. Known for its prestigious talent, these young performers have famously played at both Carnegie Hall and Walt Disney World. At Natchitoches Central, students can become members of another award-winning orchestra, and Louisiana School students regularly qualify for all-state honor choirs and orchestra participation. College students perform in the “best sounding band in the land”, the Spirit of Northwestern, and the famous NSU Symphony Orchestra, preparing not only for careers in the arts, but also for leadership roles in any field.

Students in the Spirit of Northwestern band frequently participate in campus leadership and traditionally have the highest grade point averages among campus organizations.

NSU's CAPA and LSMSA act as a workforce pipeline generating internationally skilled creative talent, and are key contributors to the social capital of the Natchitoches community. Faculty and students produce several live performances, multimedia productions, and gallery events throughout the year, including NSU's acclaimed annual Christmas Gala (pictured above). A creative and performing arts education prepares students for careers in the arts as well as production, management, education, and any other fields requiring creativity and rigorous work habits.

Cultivating art and celebrating artists, Natchitoches' vibrant arts scene draws worldwide visitors. At the Northwestern Louisiana History Museum, famed works of renowned artist Clementine Hunter are on display, and local artists are celebrated on a rotating basis in the Louisiana School's Art Gallery. Crafted works with the unique voice of the Cane River region are found at Melrose Arts and Crafts Festival, a tradition born from a century of honoring artists.

cane river CUISINE Ask anyone why they love Louisiana, and you might hear “The food!” One prominent aspect of Louisiana culture is the unique food prepared by generations of families, cooks, and chefs. The delicious fare ranges from boudin to beignets, po’boys to pralines, and crawfish étouffée to king cakes. Louisianians take their food culture seriously, and this pride is evident to every tourist who visits our state. Tourists often visit Louisiana because of the food. In 2021, culinary and dining experiences were ranked second in the top three leisure activities for Louisiana domestic travelers.

Louisiana's 41 million domestic and international visitors brought $16.8 billion in spending during 2021, and would buy 108 pounds of crawfish for each Louisiana visitor.

Clearly, our food culture benefits our state by infusing tourism dollars. As hospitality and culinary educators, faculty recognize the importance of teaching Northwestern State University (NSU) Hospitality Management students about our unique food culture and how it draws tourists to our state, especially to Natchitoches.

In Natchitoches, our food scene is fortunate to include fare such as Natchitoches meat pies and other specialties on the Natchitoches Food Trail (opposite page) that you can only find here.

Currently, the region has a variety of restaurants on and off the beaten path, with several new restaurants that opened in 2022. The Hospitality Management & Tourism program at NSU is excited about the future of the food scene in Natchitoches and has worked to enhance both culinary and hospitality education. Four years ago, Columns Café was started to implement another experiential learning opportunity in the program and provide even more hands-on learning to students in a real-world setting. Once a month, local diners enjoy themed meals prepared from scratch by students in a fine dining setting.

Chef John Carriere and other local chefs have begun the process to establish a local chapter of the American Culinary Federation, a professional organization for chefs and cooks with the goal of bringing together professional chefs and NSU culinary students for regular meetings. Future plans of the program include a fall festival featuring locally prepared gourmet food. This festival will feature the talents of local chefs and hospitality and culinary students.

Kisatchie National Forest boasts over 600,000 acres across North and Central Louisiana. In Natchitoches Parish, hidden in the bayous beneath the bald cypress groves and old growth pine is a world of natural beauty, exciting recreation for all ages, a treasure trove of resources, and incredibly diverse wildlife in its purest form. The best kept secret of locals is Kisatchie Falls, where you can enjoy a secluded dip in the freshwater swimming hole. With a world population growing at 70 million people a year, reducing carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere is becoming increasingly important. As trees are harvested to become paper, furniture, or frames for building, those solid wood and wood composite products continue to store carbon.

However, replacing the harvested trees is critical to maintaining our state’s natural carbon sink as well as maintaining the timber economy.

Forest landowners in Louisiana practice sustainable forestry as a way to assure their children, grandchildren and generations that follow have a place to hunt, fish, work, camp, hike or drive through the rural splendor that is Louisiana. With approximately 550 trees planted per acre and 125 harvested per acre as the industry standard, this means at least four trees are planted for every one that is harvested. Our pine forests benefit from a long growing season and a mild climate, making them highly sustainable and highly productive. Loblolly pine is a popular variety, prized for its beautiful characteristics in appearance lumber and long fiber for absorbent pulp. It is also a highly adaptive species fit for a broad range of finished products, making it a sustainable solution for shelter, hygiene, packaging, fabric, plastics and other products you may not expect, while also providing recreation, wildlife habitat, and other important ecosystem benefits.

economic DRIVER In addition to offering beautiful outdoor recreation opportunities and contributing to the health of the environment in our region, Louisiana forests contribute significantly to the economy in several ways, including jobs, wages, and purchases in the local economies as well as local, state, and federal taxes. Additionally, the purchase of goods and services by the forest products industry and its employees spurs economic activity in other sectors of the economy, resulting in a substantial cumulative economic contribution.

Louisiana’s forests provide a renewable resource that provides the raw material for the state’s second largest manufacturing employer, the forest products industry, with over 900 firms in 45 parishes directly employing over 25,000 people. An additional 8,000 people are employed in the harvesting and transportation of the resource.

In Natchitoches Parish, according to the LSU Ag Center in the latest figures collected, our forestry and

forest products industry had a total economic contribution amounting to approximately 1,613 jobs and over $94M in income. Forestry and the forest products industry generated an output of over $586M in this parish alone. Total industry output is defined as the value of all goods and services produced in the parish. Value added amounted to approximately $195M. Value added represents the creation of new wealth and is inserted into the economy through payments made to workers, interest, profits, and indirect business taxes.

Natchitoches Parish has abundant timber and low operating costs, making it an attractive location for major mills including RoyOMartin, Weyerhaeuser, and International Paper, who employ 690, 250, and 450 people respectively. Not only are they industry leaders, they are strong community partners in the parish who continue to invest in the retention and expansion of their mills and the hundreds of highwage, high-demand jobs with tremendous benefits that they each offer the people of our community.

travel TRENDS Tourism is a vital industry in Natchitoches, one that supports the growth of other industries and drives community development. Throughout the past three centuries Natchitoches has developed a brand as a destination for travelers from across the globe.

In 2021, over 6,800 visitors stopped in at the Natchitoches Convention and Visitors Bureau. Visitors to the historic Fort Saint Jean Baptiste totaled over 6,000 as well. Grand Ecore Visitors Center saw over 1,000 visitors and Los Adaes Historic site had several hundred visitors. Cane River Creole National Historical Park welcomed 14,984 visitors. Natchitoches Parish generated $80.2 million in visitor spending, which was a 50% increase over 2020 and an increase of 43% since 2019. 1,080 jobs and nearly $29

million in employment earnings were generated by visitor spending. Visitors contributed to $9.35 million in state and local tax revenues. Taxes paid by tourists to Natchitoches Parish save residents $600+ per household in taxes.

Natchitoches offers several outdoor recreation and tourism locations for visitors to explore. Kisatchie National Forest invested nearly $100,000 into increased preservation and accessibility infrastructure updates at the widely popular Kisatchie Bayou Campground. Parc Natchitoches multisport complex remained steady with travel baseball and softball tournaments as large as 40 teams.

Local festivals and events play a key role in attracting visitors. The Natchitoches Christmas Festival was back to full capacity for 2021, and noted a record 9,500 admission armbands were sold for the second weekend in December.

living OFF THE LAND From the small homeowner’s hobby farms and gardens, to some of the top producing contributors to the local economy, Natchitoches Parish is home to a diverse agricultural landscape.

In 2021, it was estimated that the value of agriculture in Natchitoches Parish was over $92 million, with top-producing products like forestry, cattle & calves, and poultry accounting for 70% of the total. Our commercial crops include corn, soybeans, rice and wheat. Animal agriculture represents a large piece of the pie, with our parish being home to some of the leading cattle producers, as well as smaller operations that include goats, sheep, and pigs. A leading global provider of high-quality food products, the Natchitoches Pilgrims facility is one of the world's largest poultry producers.

With the vast forests that cover most of Natchitoches parish, it is not hard to believe that our parish is a key contributor to the largest agricultural commodity in the state: forestry. We are home to several major players within the global forestry industry, including the largest plywood mill in North America. Located in Chopin, RoyOMartin owns 68,000 acres of land in Natchitoches Parish.

Our local schools are invested in agricultural workforce development through a partnership with the Natchitoches Parish LSU Ag Center Office.

The active local chapters of ag-focused student organizations help develop agricultural skills and act as a conduit to agricultural-based careers. The 4-H program partners with local farmers and community gardens to allow for hands on learning opportunities. The FFA programs introduce students to new technology, new ways to grow things, and ag-based careers.

With a booming tourism industry and exemplary education and healthcare systems, Natchitoches Parish is healthy and primed for growth. These factors create a desirable location for key industry players and local economic drivers. There are a number of other factors that contribute to the health of the economy in this region.

North Louisiana is an extremely diversified economy and agribusiness allows us to participate in a mix of economic development projects. Having local suppliers can help attract larger industries that want to be near them. This helps drive economic growth and keeps investment in the region.

Our location in the timber basket of America serves as a great advantage for economic development.

The timber basket creates a natural interest in wood-related industries to relocate and expand here. From international power houses like International Paper, Weyerhaeuser, and RoyOMartin to feeder operations like Walsh Timber, a large portion of existing jobs in Natchitoches Parish have ties to timber resources.

Alliance Compressors’ long-term presence and its recently announced $48M expansion demonstrate that manufacturers outside the timber industry can thrive in Natchitoches. We have incredible training opportunities that build a steady pipeline of talent.

Located conveniently along I-49 and just one hour south of I-20 with port access to the Red River and two major railroad lines (KCS and UP), we offer various logistical options, which allow companies like Alliance Compressors to transport product more efficiently.

The Natchitoches Parish Port (shown above) is an incredible asset to the region. It enables companies another mode of transportation to move their goods and easily connects them to national and global markets. Many of the projects that we work on request some aspect of port access, so this gives Natchitoches a competitive advantage.

Access to a skilled labor pipeline is incredibly important to a company’s productivity and success.

As companies compete for talent, quality of life becomes an important factor in whether an individual will move to a community or not. The quality of life in Natchitoches Parish makes the area extremely attractive for companies to locate and expand. Natchitoches has a bustling downtown with beautiful scenery and great food.

live well NATCHITOCHES As a practicing physician in Natchitoches for 27years, I have never felt more encouraged about the healthcare in Natchitoches. The African proverb states—“It takes a village to raise a child.”

I think this also applies to healthcare. It takes a village to achieve the aim of population health management and provide quality healthcare to a community. There are many other organizations that provide quality care to the citizens of Natchitoches and the surrounding communities.

There is synergy between these organizations that has not been present before.

Natchitoches has services for those who need home health, hospice, or long-term care services.

Natchitoches Regional Medical Center offers dialysis, physical and occupational therapy, and boasts an award-winning wound care center. This nationally recognized, award-winning hospital offers Ambulatory treatment services, Cardiology, Ear, Nose & Throat, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Nephrology, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Ophthalmology, Oncology, Orthopedics, Pain Management, Podiatry, Pulmonology, Surgery, Urology, and Wound Care. You can receive local cancer treatment at the NRMC Cancer Center.

For convenience and quality, there are urgent care clinics for those who do not need or wish to avoid an emergency room visit. Natchitoches is also home to Outpatient Medical Center, a Federally Qualified Health Center for the indigent.

Another aspect of the thriving healthcare in Natchitoches is the collaboration between healthcare organizations and the community; city and parish officials, schools, the university, and civic organizations, to name a few. There is a singular focus that is rewarding to see and be a part of.

I have always said that there must be a commitment to partnership between the patient and health care providers to achieve optimal health. Healthcare in Natchitoches can only thrive and flourish when the citizens who depend on us for care partner with us in their healthcare. I can say that partnership is being achieved.

Is healthcare in Natchitoches thriving? The answer is a resounding YES. Why? It is due to the many care services offered within the community, the collaboration between organizations and the commitment of our healthcare facilities to offer quality services. #togetherwecan We are all familiar with the ancient African proverb that says, “It takes a village to raise a child.” Well to be frank, it is true. And, more importantly, it takes a village to educate a child.

The concept of the “village” is the notion that caring for children is a shared responsibility amongst many and that is why the Natchitoches Parish School System is thriving.

Our community partners, teachers, principals, cafeteria staff, transportation, parents, support staff, and district level employees have structured a culture of excellence for all students and we are seeing gains.

In August of 2022, the Natchitoches Parish School district along with three other districts, was recognized as the highest district in the state of Louisiana that showed tremendous growth in student proficiency on LEAP 2025. NPSB grew a total of 4% for the 2021-2022 school year.

Essential to the success of student achievement is quality early childcare and education. With the support of the Natchitoches Parish Early Childhood network and the Ready Start Natchitoches Coalition we have increased accessibility to high quality childcare by making it affordable for families. We currently offer 85 birth to age three scholarships and support numerous families with securing funding through the Child Care Assistance Program.

During the 2021-2022 school year, Natchitoches implemented the Whatever I Need (WIN) program in all public schools. WIN focuses on literacy and ensures that all students receive intervention and extensions based on individual student needs.

School leadership teams and teachers utilize data and literacy screeners to set student goals and monitor progress.

Our high school students have the opportunity to participate in the Fast Forward Program. Students in this program have the option to participate in one of two pathways: Associate Degree Pathway or Technical Diploma Pathway.

School pride is another contributing factor to student achievement. As you are traveling around our beautiful parish perhaps you have noticed the upgrades to our school facilities. These improvements not only provide a safe and secure place to learn but also a sense of pride.

Natchitoches Parish Schools are growing, and we are just getting started, with the continued support of our “village” we are committed to moving from a "B" to an “A” district.

early childhood LEARNING Early Childhood Network

80% of brain development happens before the age of three; 85-90% by age five. Children who participate in early childhood programs are more likely to graduate from high school, be employed and earn higher wages. For these reasons, Natchitoches works continually on the progress of its Natchitoches Parish Early Childhood Network (NPECN), which serves children in their preschool years, birth through age 4. These programs work collaboratively with families and the community to provide high quality, developmentally appropriate, early childhood education that will meet the diverse needs of all participating children and prepare them for a positive and successful educational experience.

NPECN has 19 early childhood sites: 6 public schools, 9 private Type III centers, and 4 Head Start centers, all of which participate in rigorous teacher training and evaluation to ensure our earliest learners are receiving a quality education.

In fact, 100% of our early learning centers use a Tier 1 curriculum and 72% of our early learning teachers have a Certified Child Development Associates (CDA), a Bachelor of Arts, or higher.

Not only does Natchitoches Parish offer excellence in education for our earliest learners, but thanks to the collaborative efforts of the Early Childhood Network, tuition assistance is available for Natchitoches citizens. Free tuition is available to 85 children birth through 3, plus partially paid tuition assistance is available to over 200 children birth through age 12.

Louisiana School for Math, Science & the Arts LSMSA, also referred to as the Louisiana School, has been educating Louisiana’s most highly motivated, high-achieving students since 1983. Through a rigorous admissions process, the unique state-supported, residential high school enrolls sophomores, juniors, and seniors who represent the state’s ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic diversity. Dedicated to providing all eligible students with a rigorous education, the school works with gifts to the LSMSA Foundation to ensure educational opportunities are available despite any financial constraints.

Ranked by Niche in 2020 as the sixth best public high school faculty in the nation, instructors at the Louisiana School are committed to educating, mentoring, and supporting the school's young scholars. Faculty – more than 76% of whom hold a PhD, MFA, or the equivalent terminal degree – devote an additional 10 hours a week to individual tutoring, research, and mentoring outside of classroom instruction. University-level courses are taught on a traditional college semester system using collegiate texts. In addition, all students are required to contribute three hours of supervised work each week, helping to cultivate a positive work ethic and develop essential life skills.

St. Mary's Catholic School St. Mary’s Catholic School is a private, coeducational institution serving children in grades pre-k 3 through high school. The school is accredited by the Diocese of Alexandria, the Louisiana State Department of Education, and the AdvancED-Cognia systems. Bossier Parish Community College - Natchitoches Campus BPCC is a comprehensive public two-year community college. The Natchitoches Campus offers career technical education, general education courses, high school dual enrollment, WorkReady U Adult Education, and fast track workforce development training. Our average fall enrollment is approximately 550 students including high school dual enrollment. Graduates of BPCC afford local businesses the opportunity to hire local, well-trained, entry-level employees.

Career and technical programs include Air Conditioning and Refrigeration, Business Office Technology, Cosmetology, Industrial Manufacturing Technology, Patient Care Technician, Practical Nursing, and Welding.

For five years, BPCC in collaboration with NSU has coordinated the Advanced Manufacturing Technician (AMT) Program under the direction of GeauxFAME. The AMT program produces globalbest entry-level, multiskilled maintenance technicians through a concentrated “co-op” program of students that includes earning an associate degree, daily reinforcement of professional behaviors, and a deep development of manufacturing cultures and practices.

GeauxFAME is our local chapter of the Federation for Advanced Manufacturing Educators and is one of two FAME chapters in Louisiana. Northwestern State University Northwestern State University has serviced the region as an academic, cultural and economic resource since its creation in 1884. NSU offers associate, bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees and post-baccalaureate credentials as well as access to career development and advancement and continuing education programs. The university provides opportunities for the community to enjoy the creative and performing arts, collegiate athletics, cultural heritage education and other programming that enhances the fabric of life in northwest Louisiana.

A recent economic impact study revealed that NSU contributes $428.2 million to its 10-parish service region, which includes the main campus in Natchitoches and learning sites in Shreveport, Alexandria, Leesville/Fort Polk and Marksville.

Northwestern State has been a pioneer in online learning and offers more than 40 online degree programs that are attractive to non-traditional students and individuals serving in the military and their dependents.

Northwestern State has also pioneered partnerships with other institutions to facilitate credit transfer agreements that save students time and money in pursuit of their degrees. NSU has responded to regional industry requests by developing programs in nursing and allied health, education, computer information systems and engineering technology that directly impact workforce development and are tailored for working professionals seeking advancement in their careers. NSU also offers pathways for adults with some college credit to complete their degrees with competitive tuition and guidance from support personnel.

Education is a critical factor to the future of our workforce. The Chamber understands that this responsibility lies not only on our educators, but on the community at large. The A+ Coalition offers a platform for organizations and individuals to get involved, stay informed, and give of their time and resources to make an impact on education in the parish.

The Chamber manages the Natchitoches Economic Development Alliance (NEDA) to help provide leadership and support for economic development and workforce solutions in and around Natchitoches Parish. NEDA and its partners work to champion investment, maximize potential, and cultivate growth in the Natchitoches region.

Attracting and retaining young professionals in the Natchitoches area is pivotal to growth and innovation in the region. NYP works to strengthen and engage local young professionals through targeted networking, professional development, and philanthropy.

The Chamber champions small business by promoting and encouraging locals and tourists to eat, shop, and play in our many unique member businesses and attractions. The #GoNatchitoches campaign is a collaborative project with Chamber partners who share the "GoNatchitoches" mindset.
