The Cane River region is the proud birthplace of an entire culture: the Cane River Creoles. As Native American, French, Spanish, and African cultures merged during the founding of Natchitoches in 1714, it led to the development of this distinctive culture. The term “Creole” can describe one’s personal identity, a unique style of architecture, and time-honored food ways. Today, there is no better way to experience this culture than to visit the myriad of historic sites in and aroundNatchitochesParish.

Cane River Creole National Historical Park, a unit of the National Park Service, represents a treasure trove of Creole Louisiana's historical and cultural riches. The park preserves the cultural landscapes of Oakland Plantation and Magnolia Plantation, two of the most intact Creole cotton plantations in the United States with over 60 historic structures between the two sites. The institution of enslavement and the act of emancipation left indelible imprints on many aspects of Cane River life, and the park has worked for many years to uncover the stories of all the people that lived at Oakland and Magnolia. Such contributions were recognized in 2022 when both plantations were listed as Network to Freedom sites, honoring enslaved people’s fight for freedom To build upon this, the park offices are relocating to the historic Texas & Pacific Railway Depot with the intent to more fully interpret the African American experiencealongCaneRiver

Cane River Creole National Historical Park is just one site along Cane River with a rich and diverse history Nestled between Oakland and Magnolia Plantations along Highway 119 is Melrose Plantation, a National Historic Landmark that tells the story of world-famous African American folk artist Clementine Hunter. Across Cane River from Melrose Plantation is St. Augustine Catholic Church, the spiritual center and heart of the Cane River Creole community Nearby along Highway 484 is the Badin-Roque House, the oldest surviving example of a Creole building style known as poteaux-en-terre (posts-in-ground) within the region. In Natchitoches, Fort St. Jean Baptiste State Historic Site depicts early life in the colonial French outpost, and farther afield, Los Adaes State Historic Site depicts early colonial Spanish life. Together, the wealth of history at these historic sites is preserved as part of the broader Cane River National Heritage Area, an entity that promotes the region as a premier heritage tourism destination so more people can understand and celebrate our diverse and nationally important heritage.

The orchestra program at NSU Middle Lab School begins cultivating an appreciation of musical ability in students at a young age Known for its prestigious talent, these young performers have famously played at both Carnegie Hall and Walt Disney World. At Natchitoches Central, students can become members of another award-winning orchestra, and Louisiana School students regularly qualify for all-state honor choirs and orchestra participation. College students perform in the “best sounding band in the land”, the Spirit of Northwestern, and the famous NSU Symphony Orchestra, preparing not only for careers in the arts, but also for leadership roles in any field.

Tourists often visit Louisiana because of the food In 2021, culinary and dining experiences were ranked second in the top three leisure activities for Louisiana domestic travelers. Louisiana's 41 million domestic and international visitors brought $16 8 billion in spending during 2021, and would buy 108 pounds of crawfish for each Louisiana visitor.

Clearly, our food culture benefits our state by infusing tourism dollars As hospitality and culinary educators, faculty recognize the importance of teaching Northwestern State University (NSU) Hospitality Management students about our unique food culture and how it draws tourists to our state, especially to Natchitoches.

In Natchitoches, our food scene is fortunate to include fare such as Natchitoches meat pies and other specialties on the Natchitoches Food Trail (opposite page) that you can only find here Currently, the region has a variety of restaurants on and off the beaten path, with several new restaurants that opened in 2022. The Hospitality Management & Tourism program at NSU is excited about the future of the food scene in Natchitoches and has worked to enhance both culinary and hospitality education. Four years ago, Columns Café was started to implement another experiential learning opportunity in the program and provide even more hands-on learning to students in a real-world setting. Once a month, local diners enjoy themed meals prepared from scratch by students in a fine dining setting.

Chef John Carriere and other local chefs have begun the process to establish a local chapter of the American Culinary Federation, a professional organization for chefs and cooks with the goal of bringing together professional chefs and NSU culinary students for regular meetings Future plans of the program include a fall festival featuring locally prepared gourmet food. This festival will feature the talents of local chefs and hospitality and culinary students.

As trees are harvested to become paper, furniture, or frames for building, those solid wood and wood composite products continue to store carbon However, replacing the harvested trees is critical to maintaining our state’s natural carbon sink as well as maintaining the timber economy.

Forest landowners in Louisiana practice sustainable forestry as a way to assure their children, grandchildren and generations that follow have a place to hunt, fish, work, camp, hike or drive through the rural splendor that is Louisiana. Organizations like the Louisiana Forestry Association and the Sustainable Forestry Initiative as well as certifications through the

Forest Stewardship Council and the American Tree Farm System help promote land management practices that allow for the harvest of trees while enhancing the environment for wildlife and clean water, and planting new trees for the future

Commercial loggers, timber management companies, and manufacturers in Natchitoches Parish take great pride in maintaining sustainable practices and being good stewards of the land. In addition to offering beautiful outdoor recreation opportunities and contributing to the health of the environment in our region, Louisiana forests contribute significantly to the economy in several ways, including jobs, wages, and purchases in the local economies as well as local, state, and federal taxes Additionally, the purchase of goods and services by the forest products industry and its employees spurs economic activity in other sectors of the economy, resulting in a substantial cumulative economic contribution.

Louisiana’s forests provide a renewable resource that provides the raw material for the state’s second largest manufacturing employer, the forest products industry, with over 900 firms in 45 parishes directly employing over 25,000 people An additional 8,000 people are employed in the harvesting and transportation of the resource.

In Natchitoches Parish, according to the LSU Ag Center in the latest figures collected, our forestry and

forest products industry had a total economic contribution amounting to approximately 1,613 jobs and over $94M in income. Forestry and the forest products industry generated an output of over $586M in this parish alone. Total industry output is defined as the value of all goods and services produced in the parish. Value added amounted to approximately $195M Value added represents the creation of new wealth and is inserted into the economy through payments made to workers, interest, profits, and indirect business taxes.

In August of 2022, the Natchitoches Parish School district along with three other districts, was recognized as the highest district in the state of Louisiana that showed tremendous growth in student proficiency on LEAP 2025. NPSB grew a totalof4%forthe2021-2022schoolyear.

Essential to the success of student achievement is quality early childcare and education With the support of the Natchitoches Parish Early Childhood network and the Ready Start Natchitoches Coalition we have increased accessibility to high quality childcare by making it affordableforfamilies We currently offer 85 birth to age three scholarships and support numerous families with securing funding through the Child CareAssistanceProgram.

During the 2021-2022 school year, Natchitoches implemented the Whatever I Need (WIN) program in all public schools WIN focuses on literacy and ensures that all students receive intervention and extensions based on individual student needs. School leadership teams and teachers utilize data and literacy screeners to set student goals and monitorprogress.

Children who participate in early childhood programs are more likely to graduate from high school, be employed and earn higher wages. For these reasons, Natchitoches works continually on the progress of its Natchitoches Parish Early Childhood Network (NPECN), which serves children in their preschool years, birth through age 4. These programs work collaboratively with families and the community to provide high quality, developmentally appropriate, early childhood education that will meet the diverse needs of all participating children and prepare them for a positive and successful educational experience. NPECN has 19 early childhood sites: 6 public schools, 9 private Type III centers, and 4 Head Start centers, all of which participate in rigorous teacher training and evaluation to ensure our earliest learners are receiving a quality education In fact, 100% of our early learning centers use a Tier 1 curriculum and 72% of our early learning teachers have a Certified Child Development Associates(CDA),aBachelorofArts,orhigher
