STORYBOOK LANDS

From the high Swiss Alps to the dikes of the Low Countries, the majestic Rhine flows uninterrupted by time — past sheer cliffs and fairy-tale castles, ancient princedoms and shining modern cities, and a non-stop procession of cultural touchstones. The Rhine’s role within Western Europe’s geopolitical story is unrivaled, and dates back to early Roman times. Each bend, each mile, each landmark along the river’s course has its tale to tell. And together, these tales form a legend cast in stone, forged in steel, and swathed in romance.

At Basel, the Rhine takes a big bend and veers northward — leaving Switzerland behind as it navigates the Alsace region of France and Germany. French Strasbourg and German Kehl sit opposite each other, a pair of splendid fairylands connected by bridges. Beyond Speyer, Mainz is home to an original Gutenberg Bible. Just around the next bend, Rüdesheim sits at the start of the Gorge.

THE GORGEOUS RHINE GORGE

The deep gorge between Bingen and Bonn may be the Rhine’s most thrilling 90-mile stretch. Dramatic slopes brim with vineyards while some 40 castles provide medieval atmosphere. Myths abound here, such as the siren of Lorelei rock who lured weary seamen. Where the Moselle joins the Rhine in Cochem, a riverside promenade beckons. Upstream, Koblenz offers sidewalk cafés and Weinstuben.

THE ENCHANTED MOSELLE

With its mountains, vineyards and villages, this is river cruising at its most idyllic. So narrow is the Moselle — and so close to the shoreline while you cruise — you can hear the breeze rustling the trees and be tempted to reach for the Riesling and Gewürztraminer grape-laden vines. See the Spitzhaüschen (pointed house) in Bernkastel, explore the 12th-century Eltz Castle in Trier and stroll Cochem’s scenic riverside promenade.
