Step 1: What is your idea?

Today, more than 600 million girls live in developing countries, over one quarter of them become mothers before age 18. Adolescent girls are often overlooked by their communities, but if given the chance, they can be the most powerful force of change for themselves, their families and societies.

In January 2009, University of Hartford Professor Natacha Poggio and a team of interdisciplinary design students (now DESIGN GLOBAL CHANGE / DGC) traveled to Abheypur, India to implement Water4India, a sanitation campaign for the primary girls’ school – in collaboration with Engineers Without Borders Student Chapter.

Due to the high drop out rates and gender inequality at the local high school, the headmaster asked DGC to create designs that raise awareness of women’s important roles in the community. Our proposed solution is a set of cards depicting Indian men and women in various roles (collecting water, farming, selling goods, etc.). These cards would be used by teachers to trigger conversations about gender issues, utilizing a guidebook with facts and advice on effective mentoring for these female students –to encourage them to further pursue their interests. The cards mirror the context of rural India and suggest more alternatives to the roles usually performed by women. In January 2010, prototype sets were tested and well received by the community, as well as Navjyoti India Foundation, a local NGO that oversees social work in the area (approximately 30 villages). married women, high school girls and boys doing regular daily cores

In this unique setting is that Design Global Change was formed. A course and student group initiative at the University of Hartford, DGC develops interdisciplinary projects that bring positive change to communities around the world. Past projects include “Water4India” Campaign, Abheypur, India (AIGA Re-Design Awards 2009, 3rd place, Student Social Responsibility) and “Afya Kwanzaa” /Wellness First in Kenya’s Ridge Valley.

In January 2010, a team of DGC students traveled to India to evaluate the feasibility of a gender equality campaign by trying a prototype set of cards depicting the various roles that men and women in India provide to their communities. These cards aim to trigger conversations about gender among young girls and boys in the local high schools and would be accompanied by a teacherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s guidebook, which will be used to provide educational activities to raise awareness of girls and women. This project continues DGC and University of Hartford partnership with Navjyoti India Foundation, a non-profit organization led by famous female enforcement officer, Dr. Kiran Bedi. Navjyoti serves over 12,000 people in northern India. The staff will distribute the cards through their network, spreading the message of youth empowerment and gender equality.

Natacha Poggio Natacha Poggio is a multidisciplinary designer and since 2007, an Assistant Professor of Visual Communication Design at the Hartford Art School, University of Hartford, CT. She holds a Master of Fine Arts in Design from the University of Texas at Austin (2006) and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design from the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina (1998). Natacha Poggio’s research focuses on socially responsible design; she is interested in strategic design projects dealing with social change, to promote sustainable development and change the world for the better. In 2008, she developed coursework that led to the creation of DESIGN GLOBAL CHANGE, first as a student group and since 2009, as a special topics course.
