SOMETHING FOR YOU Get to know the heartbreaking songs and smooth moves of S4U

Something for You

Rosita Bonita and Prinz George head up the London-based collective Something For You (S4U). Upon meeting the duo, their playful demeanours are evident in their tongue-in-cheek responses to interview questions: Where do you come from? Rosita: “Mars”. Prinz George admits he’s originally from Nottingham, but says that he and his partner in crime met halfway between the planet and his hometown, and bonded over a dinner of partridges. Yet beyond the jokes and cloak of otherworldliness, these are two individuals who are serious about their deep connection to music, both in terms of production and performance.

Everything begins with their love of 90s R&B. Think Aaliyah via Janet Jackson and Eternal. Think sassy dance moves and silky vocals. “The lyricism and use of gospel layering and harmonies — and the love stories! There was just so much meaning behind a lot of the music back then,” muses Rosita. “It just affected you more than music does now,” Prinz adds.

This core inspiration extends to the duo’s fashion sense, too. Though they claim Chewbacca and Super Mario are their style icons, it’s really more about statement sportswear and Rosita’s skyhigh PVC platforms, which even Lady Miss Kier would be jealous of.

S4U’s Brazil EP came out in late 2016, after having had the material locked in a “song safe” for close to four years. “We had a session and just didn’t touch it; we were doing other things. Then we decided to make other tracks around it,” Prinz explains of how their debut record came into existence. They followed this with singles including ‘Isle of Dogs’ and ‘Friends’, which have positioned S4U as ones to watch. They’ve also nailed a recent Boiler Room set and signed to Lily Allen and Theo Motive’s Bank Holiday Records.

Now on their to-do list is completing the soon-to-be-released mixtape Heart 2 Say. They’re also planning collaborations with choreographers Diana Vizcaya and Kwame Asafo-Adjei for music videos and stage performances. Rosita, who when off-duty can often be found at the London School of Samba, leads a cast of dancers for each show. So, who would be her dream live line-up? Rosita says: “Amel Larrieux or Amy Winehouse”, to which Prinz adds: “All Saints would be sick, or B*Witched”.
