ALICE MANN Alice is a South African photographic artist whose work explores notions of picture making as an act of collaboration. Her images have been published in The Guardian, The New Yorker and the British Journal of Photography and her series ‘Drummies’ has won numerous awards including the 2018 Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize. For Nataal she lenses a young ballroom dancing brother and sister duo in Cape Town.

BIANCA AMA Bianca is a Ghanaian British curator, producer and writer invested in public and performance art and photography. Her recent partnerships include the British Council and the Sheffield International Documentary Festival and she is also curator at the Nubuke Foundation, Accra. Her writing portfolio includes The Guardian, Channel 4 and BBC World Service and for Nataal she speaks to the artist Na Chainkua Reindorf.

EMMANUEL Emmanuel is a British Nigerian writer, researcher, filmmaker and founder of Visual-Ideation. Fixed upon driving a dialogue between art, anthropology and international development, he hopes to use his practice as a tool for realising positive change. His personal essay for Nataal explores the creation and dissemination of images of African bodies in digital worlds.

JULIANKNXX Julianknxx is a London-based poet and a multidisciplinary artist. Nataal commissioned him write a poem exclusively for this issue, which he dedicates to his native Sierra Leone. His work explores issues such as mental health, masculinity, love and social justice and he’s published his writing in the book ‘Broken’. In addition, he is creative director for the menswear brand, Labrum London.

JULIE BONZON Julie is a PhD candidate in history of art at University College London researching the new generation of South African photographers. She has worked for the cultural department of Magnum Photos, The Photographers’ Gallery, The Ian Parry Scholarship and has written for The Eye of Photography. For Nataal, she wrote about the Market Photo Workshop in Joburg. LAKIN Working at the confluence of fashion photography and classical portraiture, Lakin creates enigmatic images with an erotic and subversive undertone. The Nigerian artist’s work has been featured in the New York Times, i-D, British GQ and Riposte Magazine and been acquired by the National Gallery of Victoria, Australia and the Wedge Collection in Toronto, Canada. In this issue he photographs the cultural vanguard in Lagos.

LUCIE ROX The legendary Neneh Cherry poses for Lucie in this issue. The French photographer’s work spans fashion, portraiture, documentary and landscape and what characterises her images are their softness and rich colours. Lucie’s clients have included AnOther, Muse, Sixteen Journal, Loewe and Givenchy. Now based in London, she is currently working on a portrait series exploring black womxnhood.

MOUS LAMRABAT Mous was born in Morocco and raised in Belgium. His seemingly provocative and offbeat photography opens up a conversation about stereotypes faced by Arabs, North African and Muslims. This year he enjoyed his first solo show in Belgium, which was jokingly called Mousganistan. And for Nataal he returns to Morocco to shoot our menswear cover.

NADINE IJEWERE Nadine is a south east London born photographer. Her work focuses on the subjects of identity and diversity, informed by her own Nigerian/Jamaican background. She is drawn to non-traditional faces with the aim of showcasing a new standard of beauty and giving life to the uniqueness of disparate cultures. She’s worked for Garage and British Vogue, exhibited with Nataal at Red Hook Labs and this issue captures our women’s cover story.

NAOMI MILLER Naomi is a stylist based in London. She has lived in Paris, Amsterdam and NYC, and works with clients worldwide such as Theory, Joseph, Tommy Hilfiger, Mulberry and Paul Smith. Naomi is a regular contributor to various publications such as Vogue, Beauty Papers, V and Muse and was a founding member and fashion director at Twin. For Nataal she heads to NYC to shoot our uptown accessories story.
