Message from the NASW-NJ PRESIDENT AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Friends&Colleagues,

Welcome to the 30th Annual Conference of NASW-NJ! We are thrilled to be together with you and back in person!

Over the past few years, our communities have called upon our profession in innumerable ways, and we’ve shown that regardless of where you practice and how you practice, across all disciplines and settings, social workers are essential. You have risen triumphantly to the calls to action organizing, leaning in, and leading work to change the lives of individuals and strengthen communities

While reflecting on the innumerable victories we have had in our profession, its hard not to see the ways in which our world continues to shift and create more work for us Now, more than ever, social workers are needed

This year we felt called to bring together thought leaders and expert panels to dive into the most critical topics our profession and communities are facing. From reproductive justice to representation and a host of incredible topics in between, our goal is twofold: to tackle the issues head on and to discover together the role each of us plays in each space

Social work is beautifully crafted unlike any other profession Our friends on the front lines our micro level colleagues who are providing services to individual clients daily can see firsthand not only the individual outcomes of their work, but also the immediate impacts of policy and funding on specific clients and programs Our mezzo colleagues are organizing in agencies, developing school programs, and have the opportunity to affect change in smaller systems, as well as identify barriers within those systems. And our macro-minded colleagues are often behind the scenes, creating and furthering policy and legislation, uplifting the needs of clients served by micro and mezzo level practitioners. Each of us play an instrumental role, not only in helping the world understand what is needed for people to survive and thrive, but in crafting meaningful change to bring about those conditions

It is our hope that throughout this conference, you’ll take time to reflect both on the content of the presentations, but also how you’ll use this information in your social work practice and what you can do to enrich the conversation Over the course of the next few days, you’ll be invited to consider how our profession can respond to the significant challenges before us, how you can contribute to meaningful progress, and to take action on crucial issues impacting social workers and our clients.

We wouldn’t choose any other group of professionals to tackle this work with than the assembled social workers at this conference We look forward to entering into robust conversations, hearing your thoughts and suggestions, and learning from the esteemed presenters, colleagues, and participants gathered here these next three days

Thank you for joining us on this journey Have a fantastic time at the conference!

WELCOME FROM THE WELCOME FROM THE CONFERENCE CHAIR CONFERENCE CHAIR

Dr.DawnApgarisChairoftheNASW-NJ ContinuingEducationCommitteeand AssociateProfessor/BSWProgramDirector atSetonHallUniversity.Dr.Apgarhasserved inmanyNASWleadershippositionsonthe stateandnationallevels,includingasa formerPresidentoftheNASW-NJBoardof DirectorsandthecurrentChairofthe nationalCredentialingCommittee.Dr. Apgar’sscholarshipandwritingsfocus extensivelyonsocialworkeducation, licensure,andpractice,thethreepillarsof theprofession.

This year is special, as we return to an in-person conference in Atlantic City while still offering an online option, to promote accessibility and ease of access. The next three days are an opportunity to reconnect with professional colleagues, some of whom we may not have seen since the COVID-19 pandemic Many conversations will likely resume right where they left off and the time apart will seem short

However, this year’s conference theme, Historical Moments and Social Movements, reminds us that a lot has happened in recent years that requires the clinical interventions and advocacy skills of social workers As social workers, we are keenly aware of the power of history and the importance of understanding how the past influences the present. We recognize that the challenges facing our communities today are often rooted in systemic injustices that have persisted for generations

Conference presenters will explore and discuss historical movements and social moments that are shaping the social work profession and society generally.

Many injustices seen recently demonstrate that racism still permeates our society and is present in our current structures and systems Threats to reproductive rights have threatened

self-determination in decision-making about our bodies and sexuality, especially for those who are already marginalized. While it is easy to get discouraged as we often see hatred and untruth perpetuated, social workers know the power of unified action and must stand ready to deliver quality clinical supports to those who are adversely impacted by injustice and trauma

Throughout this conference, we will hear from scholars, practitioners, and activists, who will share their insights and experiences. There is no doubt that we will engage in lively discussions and debates, respectfully voicing our own perspectives and learning from one another Excitingly, this year’s conference involves students in a more active and meaningful way.

As we continue to work toward transformation, ask “Is social work ready for today’s challenges?” The answer is “Yes!” Together we can tackle social, environmental, technological, and economic challenges while still staying true to our core values “Be the change” has never been more appropriate as we work collectively to build a more just and equitable future for all.

Thank you for all that you do to make the NASW-NJ conference a success and the important work that you do daily

EXHIBITOR BINGO HOW TO PLAY

Earn a Chance to Win Free Attendance to the 2024 NASW-NJ Annual Conference

Our sponsors and exhibitors offer a wide-array of programs, services, and information to help social workers assist clients, develop their careers, and institute smart business practices.

To encourage you to visit with ALL our exhibitors, we’ve brought back our popular Exhibitor Bingo game! Pick up your Bingo card when you get your conference tote bag and be sure to bring it with you to the Exhibit Hall.

Each exhibitor you visit will place a star sticker on your bingo card. When you have a sticker from every exhibitor and your bingo card is complete, just drop it off at the NASW-NJ Booth. When you do so, you’ll automatically be entered into a random drawing to win free attendance to next year’s NASW-NJ Annual Conference. It’s as simple as that!

So be sure to spend some time with our sponsors and exhibitors in the Exhibit Hall, located in the Ocean Ballroom. And don’t miss our Exhibit Hall Grand Opening Reception, Sunday, April 30, from 4-6pm.

HAPPY BINGO-ING!

Social workers are currently being called upon to provide expertise, engage and take action to pave the way for a brighter, safer and more inclusive future. Though this work is not new to our profession, there’s no better or more important time to come together as a collective and amplify our voices and values by being part of the largest, most influential organization of social workers in the world

Advocacy:

Social workers speak out and NASW-NJ takes action, whether that’s advocating for state licensure improvements, more opportunities to practice across state lines, or meeting with the NJ Division of Consumer Affairs to understand licensure delays and develop a plan for the future

Professional Development:

Develop and provide the resources you need to support your clients, colleagues, and communities at large. Since March 2020 alone, NASW-NJ has provided over 200 programs to keep social workers informed and up-to-date on the newest professional advancements through certificate and continuing education programs, Community Conversations, the Race, Responsibility, & Reconciliation series and more.

Professional Home: NASW-NJ makes it easy for social workers to connect and collaborate through virtual and regional in-person events, Unit Events, Shared Interest Groups, and leadership opportunities within the chapter and the national organization.

We invite you to engage with us to learn about what it means to be a member of NASW-NJ. As social work professionals, you influence the lives of many around you; you encourage, support, advocate for, and inspire your clients, colleagues, and the community to be better At NASW-NJ, we work to provide you with the tools, resources and opportunities you need to keep doing just that

Refunds will be processed within 2 weeks after conference and will be applied to the payment method used to register for conference This offer is only valid for those joining the NASW-NJ chapter

The NASW-NJ Chapter volunteer leadership is composed of social workers just like yourself, who are passionate about our field, our collective purpose, and have a desire to contribute to the dialogue and lend their talents and voices to the betterment of our Chapter.

Here’s a few ways you can volunteer with us:

Serve as a Unit Leader – NASW-NJ has units across the state to provide members with regionally based networking and educational opportunities. As a volunteer chair or co-chair, you can help plan and coordinate events that bring value to our members.

Serve on a Committee – Committees are a great way to learn more about the inner workings of our professional organization and help shape programs and policies. These are one-year appointments and typically meet via phone or Zoom on a monthly basis.

Serve as a Shared Interest Group Facilitator – Social work is one of the most diverse professions, and our Shared Interest Groups allow members in similar practice-areas to talk through shared experiences, challenges, opportunities, and to network. As a facilitator, you can help guide the group, coordinate meetings, and lead the discussion.

Serve on the Board of Directors – Lead and serve our organization at the highest level! Board positions are elected by member vote and serve one to two-year appointments. Our Board meets bi-monthly and is active in conversations, dialogue, and Chapter governance in-between meetings.

Am I qualified to volunteer?

You should be an NASW-NJ member and a social worker (but if you’re an associate member, we can talk with you about those qualifications as well!) Social workers are in every aspect of our community and we hope our leadership is as diverse as our membership

Sound exciting? Contact us today about becoming a volunteer! You can email Resia Cooper, Engagement Coordinator, at rcooper.naswnj@socialworkers.org for more information.
