FORUM SUMMARY A.2

To encourage more democratic exchange

FORUM 01 First of all, an introduction of the acronym is needed to understand that IDCP stands for Interior Design Consultancy Practice, and ever since the year 2006, suggestions have been made into implying that only designers who are registered with the centralized body are allowed to establish a design firm. The registration has to be made with a body called Malaysia Institute of Interior Designers, MIID which was founded in the year 1989 with the combination of two previous bodies, Institut Perekabentuk Dalaman Malaysia, IPDM, and Malaysian Society of Interior Designers, SID.

Many advantages could be taken when you are a part of the centralized body and the major one would be the standardization of procedure, practice as well as laws. This could provide a platform for designers to share ideas and experiences. Any projects showcase through the body also has the advantage of putting it on a higher recognition level. This gives the benefit of showcasing and bringing exposure of the designer or the firm in the industry as it engages with the international design bodies. Through this, it gives the platform for better networking and the development of one’s design profession. In spite of the advantages, MIID only has 16 firms that are registered under the body.

Despite having many great advantages, the downside of having a centralized body gives many disadvantages to unregistered designers. There is multiple additional cost for when you register or renew your membership with the centralized body and this may disrupt one’s finance if ever he or she is at the first few steps into getting started with the profession. Hence, it will be a bigger additional investment and procedure despite going to a design school for a couple of years. Other than that, this could limit any designer opportunity in getting jobs in the industry especially those who are doing freelancing and new designers will face trouble keeping up with all the requirements. As a reference to another platform such as Atap, it works well to gather all designers and allow them to create their potential portfolio for new clients outreach.

FORUM 02 I can conclude based on the discussion that a disabled friendly space is very important in every building space in making sure all users could get the chance to fully utilize a certain architecture. Disability is much more common than we think hence I believe it is important to follow the Malaysian Standard in providing the necessary assistance needed for them to go through in and out of the building. By having this necessity, visitor of all backgrounds able to experience and feel included in the community.

Other than only implicating disabled friendly space in buildings such as institutional and healthcare buildings, it is also important to prioritize common areas such as public transportation areas, public areas and even the sidewalks. This could contribute them into fulfilling their daily needs and routine making it much easier for them to get to anywhere from one point to another.

The role of both an architect and a designer is to make sure that all architectural buildings are able to be enjoyed and experienced by many despite their background and disability. Having the right knowledge and using the right output in implicating the Malaysian Standard 1184 could highly help in overcoming the disabled people and their dilemmas in going places which do not have the convenience for such people.

FORUM 03 Fire safety is prominent in terms of the design of a building or a space and this is to make sure that there is a regulated protection from fire to any occupants of the building. Fire safety is split into both active and passive fire system which is standardised under the Uniform Building By-Laws. This not only allow a good practice of safety for the building but also to also make sure same implementation of rules and regulations in being practice in every architecture. By implying a good fire safety, this could overcome many issues as loss and death.

The current laws applied by the authority gives a guideline to the architects and designers to make sure proper fire safety is being practiced. Other than that, the authority provides a complete and adequate amount of information needed to be used as a reference. Although, many regulations have been applied, in my opinion, it is important that fire appliances along with the entire costing needed is being shared in a much more transparent manner to ease up the process and the additional costing.

However, despite having a good regulation of laws created based on the Uniform Building ByLaws, it might be overwhelming when it comes to applying it on every of the building as it has complicated and detailed requirements. Not only that, but it also takes longer time and deeper study of understanding the law to apply it back into the actual situation. The numerous revisions also could be a hassle and slows down the entire process of a project. Despite, the huge additional cost in making sure of the safety of the building occupants, by assisting the owner in providing an easier procedure and list of costing could save up more time and shorten the process.

However, in order to create reasonable expenses, we have to consider in getting a realistic salary corresponding to the project and scope we are in. Another way to be valued and recognized on our work to make sure good salary is being given is to give out a good impression especially to the employers and this could be done easily on social platform and medias as people often would research briefly for a person’s background to understand a potential employee better.
