N

ovember is here, and along with this month comes the official start of the holiday season! This is a time of year to surround ourselves with family and friends, to soak in the rich colors and luscious flavors that just scream “fall,” and to slow down enough to remember all we have to be thankful for. But this season can also be hectic as we scramble to prepare for out-of-town guests and traditional feasts that take hours in the kitchen to pull off. That’s why our latest issue of Natural Awakenings is an invitation to get back to the basics of physical and mental wellness, so you can be present to enjoy this month of gratitude. Here’s a peek inside! Our feature article for November is on “Better Sleep” because this is one of the main foundations to a healthy, balanced and vibrant lifestyle. Compromised sleep affects your relationships, job performance and overall quality of life. It can also result in all kinds of health issues such as chronic inflammation, reduced immune function, anxiety or depression, and an elevated risk of heart attacks or strokes. However, when your sleep is restful and consistent, you are able to accomplish more in the day and feel more energized in the process. This article also recommends natural solutions to improve your sleep habits such as acupuncture, mindful breathing, nutrition, exercise, meditation, CBD oil and adaptogenic plants. Speaking of nutrition, our “Conscious Eating” article this month explores the food rituals of Buddhism and how nourishing our bodies is a spiritual practice. You don’t have to be immersed in the Buddhist tradition, however, to learn the art of mindful cooking—just in time for this year’s Thanksgiving spread! In this article, three of the nation’s foremost Zen chefs share their wisdom on how to be more grateful and at peace around the dinner table. Gratitude is obviously an important value this time of year, and it’s something we should instill in our children now more than ever. Our “Healthy Kids” article delves into just that—how to inspire the next generation to express thankfulness and appreciation for the blessings in their lives. Not only does this nurture their kindness, integrity and character as humans, but it also has a positive impact on their well-being too. In fact, studies have found that grateful kids tend to be more relational, content and well-adjusted—not to mention, less envious, depressed, materialistic or prone to violence. So let’s seize the opportunity to model gratitude this season. My hope for this issue is that it fills you with pure enjoyment and enlightenment as the holidays draw near. Please send any comments, questions or feedback to Publisher@ NASRQ.com, and from all of us at Natural Awakenings, here’s to a warm and wonderful Thanksgiving!

A Natural Solution to Sleep Apnea

A

ccording to a National Institutes of Health study, most people believe that sleep apnea is caused by a sagging soft pallet or some other obstructive tissue in the throat. Actually, it’s the result of a diminishing signal from the brain to the diaphragm that can occur during the transition from initial semi-wakefulness into the next stage of lighter sleep prior to REM sleep. In some people, this unintended reduction in the signal is significant enough that breathing goes beyond shallowness and completely stops. After a short period of time, the brain, realizing the need to breathe, forces a rapid inhalation to restart respiration that literally drags the sagging localized soft tissues into the airway, as reported in Sleep Apnea: A New Approach to an Emergent Problem by Master Herbalist Steven Frank of Nature’s Rite. For some, there’s no indication of potential problems when they are awake, as the tissues remain in their normal state, and the throat doesn’t close off during the day or when relaxing or resting, but they can experience an obstruction problem when trying to sleep. Instead of resorting to surgery to remove neck tissue or using a machine to force air into lungs, try a natural herbal solution that has been used for thousands of years. Lobelia acts as a respiratory stimulant and maintains deep, steady breathing through the stage two sleep period. Thyme improves the ability of the lungs to exchanges CO2 for oxygen, while chamomile and cramp bark relax the upper trapezius muscles, supporting better nerve transmission. For more information, call 888-465-4404 or visit MyNaturesRite.com.

Yoga for the Special Child Training Courses

Y

oga for the Special Child®, LLC, is multi-level, comprehensive training program of yoga techniques designed by Sonia Sumar more than 45 years ago to enhance the natural development of children with special needs. This style of yoga is gentle and beneficial—safe for babies, children and adults with Down’s Syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism and other developmental issues. These methods also provide an effective treatment for children diagnosed with ADD/ADHD or learning disabilities. The 95-hour certification program part one is our pre-requisite training. Using hands-on instruction, the participants will be guided through each stage of the special child’s development, learn how to evaluate new students and create the optimum yoga routine for them, learn an integrated series of balanced Yoga poses to increase body awareness and strength, and practice specialized breathing exercises and relaxation techniques to improve concentration. This course provides essential tools to begin working with children with special needs. Part two of this course further expands on the techniques learned in part one with emphasis on working with teens and young adults, as well as refining the skills to work with children from 0-12 years of age. Completion of both courses satisfies the 95-hour R-CYT designation with Yoga Alliance. It is also AOTA approved for CEU providers. The courses are appropriate for OTs, PTs, SLPs, yoga teachers and parents of children with special needs.     Early bird pricing is available now though January 15, 2020. For more information, email YSCiInfo@gmail.com or visit SpecialYoga.com.

Posture or Acture?

D

o you want to hold a posture or move with ease and grace? The Feldenkrais Method® uses movement and directed attention to enhance anyone’s ability to move— young or old, physically challenged or physically fit—without strain or discomfort.   When you lie on the floor or sit in a chair and attend to the details of your weight in your buttock, you learn to quiet old habits, tune into how you move and, through specifically designed movement lessons, recover old abilities, while discovering new ones too. Moshe Feldenkrais, D.Sc., described humans as movers, rather than stationary “posts,” so the word “posture” should be changed to act-ure. Feldenkrais’ Awareness Through Movement® Classes take place on a consistent basis at Ionie’s on Monday evenings at 5:45 p.m., as well as Wednesday mornings at 10 a.m. Location: 1241 Fruitville Rd., Sarasota. For more information, call 941-360-2248 or email Bonnie@FeldenkraisInSarasota.com.

Genetic Testing to Customize your Cannabis Treatment

W

hen it comes to medical cannabis, we at Point Lumineux utilize plantbased cannabinoids to augment our own circulating cannabinoids (anandamide and 2 AG) to manipulate this system and further improve our own health and wellness. Medicinal plants like cannabis are a unique source of exogenous cannabinoids that promote wellness and help fight disease. Understanding how each unique individual’s endocannabinoid system interacts with cannabis helps us customize treatment recommendations. Point Lumineux is leading the movement in our area to offer this unique form of genetic testing to facilitate our cannabis recommendations. With a simple cheek swab, we obtain the DNA which is then sent for analysis. We also use a person’s data if they have previously done 23 & Me or Ancestry.com testing. With these

results, we can fine-tune their cannabis recommendations and offer a therapeutic advantage. The genetic testing results provide useful information regarding genes, markers, enzymes, receptors, and metabolic pathways, and it is helpful in suggesting optimal cannabis formulations. The cost of this testing is $199—or $49 if someone has already done ancestral DNA testing. For many, this is a small investment that could make a significant long-term impact. A follow-up visit with the doctor is also required to discuss results and make the appropriate recommendations. “Our mission is to educate the community on the responsible use of cannabis. Now, using genetic testing, we can take the guesswork out of medical marijuana and help our patients even more,” notes Dr. Hoffmeister. For more information, come to our free cannabis educational event on November 7, 5:30 p.m. Location: 2206 Jo An Dr., Suite 4, Sarasota. For more information, call 941-217-6829 or visit PointLumineux.com and MarijuanaDoctorNow.com.

n November 15, 1 p.m., Dr. Anna Baker, DOM, will present a seminar on Pearl Cream by Dr. Anna, her revolutionary anti-aging serum made from real pearls and Chinese herbs without any preservatives. Pearls contain amino acids that retighten muscles and slowly return the face to its younger look with daily use. These amino acids are sensitive, and are destroyed by chemical preservatives which is why other commercially available pearl creams don’t offer these results. Dr. Anna will show photographed results on people of all different ages. Pearl Cream by Dr. Anna is also available as a muscle tightening body lotion, men’s anti-aging line and sports performance line.

ou are invited to join the “Take Charge of Your Health” team at Sandhill Healing Center and experience a day of multiple workshops and demonstrations on November 2, noon to 3 p.m. This will be an afternoon to sample private group training in posture and movement to release tight tissue in four major areas. In the “Breathing for Health and Mobility” workshop, learn how breathing affects your movement, then discover an optimal breathing pattern and how breathing increases range-of-motion and improves posture. In the “Foot Mobility” workshop, find out just how rigid your feet or ankles are, then learn how to release tight tissue in and around the lower extremities, perform gentle foot exercises, and achieve renewed energy and balance. Finally, step in front of our thermography camera and take a look for yourself at what early detection can offer. Find out how acupuncture can help to improve and maintain your health. Come and see our new Sunlighten Infrared Detox system that provides three infrared wavelengths in one place which is customizable to each user. This event is presented by Dr. Cheech Hill, DOM, AP; S. Yevette Sutter, RN, CCT thermographer; Julie Anne McGready, integrative movement specialist and IMS integrative corrective exercise instructor; and Heather Pack, IMS integrative corrective exercise instructor.

The Healing Properties of Crystals

I

love crystals! I love to look at them, touch them and feel their vibrations. Each crystal has its own unique frequency, making it as individual as you or me. Crystals are like conscious beings with distinct personalities. To me, crystals are more like friends than tools I use for healing. I even call them my “crystal buddies.” When I receive a new crystal, I always take some time to become familiar with its energy. How does it feel when I look at it or when I hold it? My favorite way to bond with a new crystal is to take it on a walk. Walking helps me enter into a meditative state which opens me up to receive messages from the crystal. These messages usually come as subtle suggestions about the crystal’s possible uses. A crystal’s healing properties come from three main factors. Its color, chemical composition and crystalline structure combine to form a custom natural remedy. My passion is to learn all I can about how crystals can be used to heal the body, mind and spirit. It’s a pleasure for me to pass on this crystal knowledge in my classes and workshops. Rod Pettit is a certified crystal healer, Reiki master and spiritual teacher. He will be teaching “An Introduction to Crystals” on November 14, 5:30–7:30 p.m., at Inquire Within Goddess Shoppe in Lakewood Ranch For more information, call 941-822-8056 or email Susan@ TheGoddessShoppe.net.

Spinal Misalignment and Your Emotions

S

pinal health is a significant part of the human system because its lack of proper alignment can be responsible for a wide variety of physical conditions and unbalanced emotions. It has been documented that chiropractic alignment can help with issues such as Bell’s Palsy, hearing loss, IBD, high blood pressure, chronic sinusitis, headaches, bowel irregularity, mental fog and anxiety. By determining what part of the spine is misaligned, we can gain valuable insight into blocked emotions, psychological issues, fears and negative behavioral dynamics. Once we become aware of these emotions, we can utilize different techniques to release ourselves of these burdens. So how do we find out what part of the spine is out of alignment either physically or energetically? One of the simplest, most effective and free-of-charge modalities to release unwanted emotions is the EFT tapping method. There are many different techniques out there, one of which is a biofeedback evaluation that scans the entire spinal cord for energetic imbalances. Beata Molnar, Energy Healer and Biofeedback Technician, can help with such readings in her Sarasota office. She will do an evaluation via the human voice, run a spine scan and hand you a spinal chart of emotions that discusses all areas that need balance. She then will teach you how to use EFT to release unwanted emotion. Molnar also uses a PEMF technology and sound healing. If you have questions about this practice, contact the Healing Room. Location: Aaron Ct., Sarasota. For more information, call 941-586-9539 or visit Facebook.com/CreateBalanceAndHealing.

Come Home to Something New in Sarasota

P

eople in Sarasota have been ready for a new spiritual community, one filled with energy and deeply rooted in peace, love, and Science of Mind. The Center for Spiritual Living Cultural Coast answers this call, and has been meeting Sunday mornings since April at 11 a.m. The Sarasota Garden Club offers the perfect setting for these sometimes meditative, sometimes rocking, yet always heartfelt spiritual gatherings led by Reverend Theresa Fieberts and her husband, Spiritual Practitioner and Music Director Bob Fieberts. CSLCC exudes authenticity, inclusivity—the feeling of coming home. Rev. Fieberts first discovered the Science of Mind teaching in 1992, when she walked into the Center for Positive Living, a Sarasota New Thought Center no longer in operation. That day changed the course of her life, and she is now committed to helping others find personal empowerment and inspiration for individual and collective spiritually motivated action and expression. Rev. Fieberts states, “This is a time for us to come together, to actively create a world that works for everyone and everything.” To sanctify and celebrate their charter, the Spiritual Director, Board of Trustees, Spiritual Practitioners and members of CSLCC will hold a “Saying Yes! to Life” installation celebration on November 22. The music will be provided by Motown bassist-turned New Thought artist Eddie Watkins Jr., Sarasota’s sacred steel band The Bird Tribe, Faerie Elaine Silver and Howlin’ Bob Fieberts. A live painting by famed local artist Truman Adams will be auctioned during the event, along with other items and services. Location: 1131 Blvd. of the Arts, Sarasota. For more information, call 941-376-0177 or visit CSLCulturalCoast.org.

Dr. Anna’s Acupuncture Face and Necklift Seminar

O

n November 13, 2 p.m., Dr. Anna Baker, DOM and founder of Faces by Dr. Anna, will present a seminar on facial rejuvenation at any stage in the aging process with her muscle tightening acupuncture face and necklift technique. Dr. Anna’s results are unique in that all muscles of the face and neck are retightened proportionally along the route they aged. She will show photographed results on people of all different ages and face types. She is also a specialist in the restoration of drooping surgical facelifts and poor results from Botox, fillers and laser treatments. A nationally board-certified Doctor of Oriental Medicine, Dr. Anna has been practicing in Sarasota since 1998. She has developed her specialty in a muscle tightening acupuncture face and necklift with no needles used on the face. Up to three treatments can be done in one day with a 10-treatment minimum. After treatments are completed, a one or two treatment touch-up is suggested every 18 months to maintain the lift. Dr. Anna’s work has been nationally televised, and she has been voted Sarasota’s favorite anti-aging practitioner. Location: 2721 Mall Dr., Sarasota. For more information, call 941-921-2662. To view beforeand-after photos, visit FacesByDrAnna.com. If you can’t make the seminar, Dr. Anna also offers free consultations.

Not Only Do We Live among the Stars, the Stars Live within Us

E

ach month, The Spirit University invites our community to ask questions or connect to those who have passed on. We offer in-house, themed psychic fairs during which, for $25, you can experience a 15-minute reading or healing. We are part of the cosmos and all its infinite possibilities. We seek to view the unseen and connect to “higher beings” who guide us into what we are meant to be. We invite all seekers and explorers to this month’s themed Close Encounters Psychic Fair and Open House. On November 9, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., uncover the mysteries within yourself and beyond. You can explore the universe with informative lectures on topics such as “11:11 Phenomena” or “Angels, Aliens and UFO Investigations,” along with a “Mediumship Gallery” to hear messages from the departed and more. Experience a reading with our intuitive readers who will answer your questions or connect with a loved one from “another world.” In addition, spiritual healers will make your body and soul feel renewed, so you can face life with vitality. Baltic Amber at Elysian Fields

B

altic amber is the most sought-after type of amber. It is resin that oozed from living trees in prehistoric forests and fossilized over millions of years. Most Baltic amber is between 30–90 million years old, but some has been dated to be 320 million years old. The most abundant sources of Baltic amber are found on the shores of Lithuania, Poland and Russia. In the most unique and expensive pieces of amber, you can see extinct insect inclusions which are mostly found in amber museums today. Authentic Baltic amber contains up to 8% of succinic acid. It is an anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antibiotic and anti-anxiety substance which helps relieve hot flashes. When combined with body heat, Baltic amber releases succinic acid into the bloodstream. This acid is what makes amber teething necklaces popular for babies. In addition, pet collars with amber act as natural flea and tick repellents. Besides being worn as jewelry, Baltic amber is used in teas, lotions, incense, tinctures and room sprays. Its esoteric properties are associated with sacral and solar plexus chakras, as well as for helping with throat and thyroid disorders. It carries ancestral wisdom, and is excellent for releasing negative karma and recalling past lives when used in meditation. Amber is also protective when used as a talisman for children and adults. Elysian Fields carries Baltic amber in small stones to use in meditations and in pieces of jewelry, from pendants to bracelets. Location: 1273 Tamiami Trail, Sarasota. ith something new, comes change. Angela’s Pure Salon & Spa is excited to announce that one of our own product lines Kevin Murphy will be using 100% ocean waste plastics recycled for its product bottles. Every minute, one garbage truck full of plastic is dumped into the ocean which equals eight million tons of plastic entering our oceans each year. 150 million tons of plastic are currently swimming in the oceans today, and our society produces more than 300 million tons of plastic each year. 95% of all plastic is used only once, but if we continue at this rate, by 2050, there will be more plastic than fish swimming in the oceans. We are committed to improving our world and society, and we hope you are too which is why Angela’s Pure Salon & Spa makes every effort to help protect the environment. Reduce Wrinkles, Tighten Crepe-y Skin or Eliminate Stubborn Fat with Cryoskin

I

f you could have smoother, more radiant skin on your face, neck or cleavage or eliminate stubborn body fat without surgery or down time would you try? Cryoskin works by using sub-zero temperatures to eliminate body fat. We utilize this science to provide slimming, skin tightening, toning, cellulite and facial treatments with non-invasive results. Cryoskin slimming helps our customers lose inches off their stomach, love-handles, thighs and other areas. Toning sessions help to diminish cellulite, tone the body and tighten the skin. Toning is effective for the face, neck and cleavage areas because it reduces the look of crepe-y skin. Our treatments are neither painful nor invasive, and there is no downtime. We are so confident in this process that if you book a stomach slimming session, and you do not measure at least half an inch less after the session, then your treatment is free. Why should you pick Cryoskin at Cryo Studio Sarasota? Aside from in New York, where the Cryoskin headquarters is located, we are the only studio in the Eastern United States that has a Master Elite Certified trainer on staff. This means you will not find any other business with more knowledge and technique for these treatments than we have. We specialize in Cryoskin treatments, and we do not offer any other services or treatments which is the reason we are experts. During this month, Natural Awakenings readers will receive $150 off any five-pack of treatments, as well as a free consultation. We have moved and expanded: L’Core Spa, Suite 24-25, 3501 S. C

hronic pain costs people their quality of life. This could be due as much to injury or disease as it can be from stressful situations like the lost relationships, employment or functionality which lead to addictions, anxiety, depression and even suicide. The first-line treatment with mind and body methods was recommended by the Surgeon General in 2018. Painkiller use is found to increase the need for stronger, more frequent dosing over time which leads to heightened levels of pain less responsive to painkillers. Studies that compare patients on medications to those receiving mind-body approaches conclude these latter interventions are more effective for chronic pain than medications long-term. Pain is a complex physical and psychosocial occurrence triggered by imbalances in the nervous system, muscles and fascia, dietary regimens, social and environmental conditions, sleep patterns, aggravating injuries and stress, and psychological responses. If complex pain triggers are masked or ignored, the pain symptoms grow in duration and intensity. Yoga Therapy improves both physical and psychological resiliency, making it protective against pain and disability for all ages, especially acute recurring pain conditions like fibromyalgia, migraines, multiple sclerosis, lower back or joint pain, and depression. A study in the 2007 Annals of Surgery reported fear at the time of a traumatic surgery or motor vehicle accident to be the strongest predictor for pain afterwards, and the ability to remain optimistic and calm under stress to be the most useful in chronic recurring pain prevention. Medications have their benefit, but non-pharma therapies are evidenced to be more effective and safer. Sarasota’s Empowered 2 Wellness Yoga Therapy offers individualized programs and selfcare skills for balancing body and mind to relieve chronic pain and suffering. There is no charge for consultation. Location: 1219 S. East Ave., STE 104, Sarasota. For more information, call 941-316-6893, or visit Empowered2Wellness.com.

ello, Sarasota County! My name is Heather Dempsey. I moved here from Pennsylvania just a few weeks ago, and I have never felt so at home as I have since I arrived. I would love to introduce myself and see how I can be of service to this community. I am an intuitive, certified success principles and integrative wellness coach, NLP practitioner, clear beliefs coach, certified yoga instructor, Reiki master teacher, Simra healer and professional crystal healer. I utilize modalities that focus on the science of energy, as well as the conscious, subconscious, unconscious and higher conscious for deep transformations. Over the years, most of us have been told that in order to experience change, we must work hard, take risks or make sacrifices. But I am here to challenge those ideas because, as humans, we are often tired of working so hard—there needs to be time to enjoy our lives too. On that note, is there something you wish for or desire to change in some area of your life without losing this sense of enjoyment? Perhaps you want to enrich your own experiences, to have more physical freedom and less discomfort, or to enhance your emotional wellness to move beyond grief, trauma and other painful losses. The services I offer just might help you transition into the next phase of life you desire. Complimentary consultations are available to determine if and how I can serve or support you in this process. To view my qualifications, visit HeatherADempsey.com/Certifications. Sarasota Center of Light Celebrates it’s 70th Anniversary

J

oin in for a Founders Day Celebration on Sunday, November 3rd at the Sarasota Center of Light. There will be a special Sunday morning service, a wonderful coffee hour, a peace pole rededication and so much more to celebrate the 70th anniversary as a center here in Sarasota! In 2008, Jo Mooy and Patricia Cockrill established a sixty-five square mile, diamond shaped, prism of light with 12 anchor points, represented by a different individual, connected to a center or a spiritual place in Sarasota. At each of those anchor points a peace pole was installed. On the 70th anniversary there will be a rededication of a new peace pole in the garden with all of the twelve original individuals acting as anchors present as well as representatives from the Venice Peace Project. Sarasota Center of Light (SCOL) when started in 1949, was named Shrine of the Master. It was founded to create a philosophy that practiced right living, healing, mediumship and an understanding of Spiritual Law by Rev. Dorothy and Dr. Russell Flexer, a husband and wife team of spiritualist ministers and mediums. The church evolved from the Spiritualist Episcopal Church, the parent organization that the Flexers belonged to in the early days of their ministry. In 1958, the Flexers created a new denomination and called it Metaphysical Christianity. The Flexers’ goals and dreams for Shrine of the Master were to bring to people an awareness of understanding of

spiritual truth that was both spiritual and could be applied to everyday life. These teachings are offered clearly and simply and can be used by anyone regardless of their level of understanding or experience. Primary subjects taught were and continue to be healing, meditation, spirit communication, mediumship development, spiritual law, and interpretation of biblical teachings. The Rev. Dorothy and Dr. Russell Flexer were pioneers of spiritual truth, establishing the Center of Light’s principles. Today, Rev. Jim Toole leads the Sarasota Center of Light congregation as Sr. Pastor into an ever expanding expression of the light and love of God and spirit and what began as a small neighborhood church and has grown to be a center of light with over fifteen buildings and properties, used for services, classes, events, offices, counseling, fellowship, healing, mediumship and so much more. As SCOL’s philosophy evolved and in response to the ever changing view and interpretation of spirituality, they were inspired to take a closer look at how the center expressed itself as a church. In 2010, the name was changed from Metaphysical Christianity to Metaphysical Spirituality, and the name Shrine of the Master to Sarasota Center of Light. Metaphysical spirituality is known as a way of life built upon the spiritual principles of life and embrace the teachings of all master teachers. Key expressions within the philosophy are Healing and Spirit Communication. SCOL believes in personal responsibility and determining the conditions of life through thoughts and actions. Through the guidance of Spirit and many who have served the church over the decades, Shrine of the Master has evolved into a “Center of Light,” a beacon that shines brightly allowing individuals to

discover, express and experience their own connection with Spirit and God. Sarasota Center of Light is a sanctuary for the exploration and discovery of the awareness, knowing and being of spiritual truth and has been devoted for seventy years to offering the inspiration and principles of Metaphysical Spirituality as a way of life that empowers individuals to find and express their true self. SCOL recognizes that each individual is on their own unique inner journey and understanding of God and embraces the teachings of all Master Teachers and are committed to supporting those who seek to connect with their divine nature and experience this inspiration in their daily life. Many can immediately feel the sacred energy of our Sanctuary and extensive campus which includes our Sanctuary, an Education Center, Davis Hall, Healing Chapel, Center Office, Spirit Chapel and an exquisite Healing Garden. SCOL is always available with love, compassion, understanding and acceptance. Social functions such as potluck dinners, coffee hours and receptions are held on a regular basis to help create community, fellowship and friendship. Contact the center with any questions or if they can be of service. Sarasota Center of Light, 852 S Tuttle, Sarasota. For more information, call 941-953-6620 or visit SarasotaCenterOf Light.com.

Hibiscus rosa-sinensis is much more than a brilliant scarlet tropical flower: New laboratory research from Canada’s University of Windsor found that a hibiscus flower extract selectively kills off triple-negative breast cancer cells. This is one of the most difficult to treat types that affects 15 to 20 percent of breast cancer patients. Hibiscus is particularly effective when combined with chemotherapy, researchers say, and works as well with very low doses of the chemicals as with higher doses. The flower’s low toxicity and precise targeting of cancer cells also offers hope for long-term treatment. Previous studies have shown hibiscus to be effective on prostate cancer, leukemia, gastric cancer and human squamous cell carcinoma.

Caffeine has been the subject of controversy among the one in six adults worldwide that suffer from periodic migraines: Some say it triggers symptoms, while others report it wards them off. A new study from Harvard and two other teaching hospitals of 98 migraine sufferers used six weeks of daily journals to investigate the link and found that drinking up to two servings of caffeinated beverages a day had little effect, but three or more raised the odds of a headache that day or the next. Among people that rarely drank such beverages, even one or two servings increased the odds of having a headache that day. A serving was defined as eight ounces or one cup of caffeinated coffee, six ounces of tea, a 12-ounce can of soda or a two-ounce can of an energy drink.

This crown blocks the natural detoxification process, and the pulp of the tooth could undergo necrosis which leads to an abscess. Once the tooth is abscessed, it needs to be extracted or treated with root canal therapy which also causes potential risks. Sometimes the prior damage to the tooth is too extensive, and a dental crown is the only treatment that can restore its function. However, biomimetic dentistry seeks to explore and implement a more conservative approach whenever possible. Instead of a full-coverage crown, a large composite resin filling is done with a specific layering technique to reinforce the internal tooth structure with a matrix called Ribbond. At White Sands Dentistry, we also utilize Ribbond’s proven technique to support areas of the tooth where a cusp was lost. This technique is called a cusp replacement. It is a time-consuming process, but only damaged areas of the tooth are removed, leaving the rest in place which allows the tooth to “breathe.” Ribbond also allows the tooth to flex under mastication forces, while minimizing the possibility of stress cracks. The biomimetic approach conserves the tooth structure to minimize abscessing, breakage and catastrophic tooth loss to extend its life-span.

Did you know a tooth is a delicate organ? It contains its own blood supply, nervous system and lymphatic drainage. The root of a tooth is porous which allows for nutrient exchange between the tooth and its surrounding bone. Dentistry does not always take these facts into consideration, and teeth are often treated as hairs or nails—they are cut or filed down. A tooth cannot re-grow itself, but it can detoxify itself. This detoxification process takes place from inside the tooth pulp out through the outside enamel layer. When a tooth is broken down and decayed, a dental crown can be recommended by a dentist to remedy the situation. What takes place during a crown preparation, however, is a partial tooth amputation where almost the entire enamel

From Earth to Sky: A Parable of Transition by Juliette Gay Jones

T

here is a cycle in nature when the tide turns around and begins to move back toward the sea. In the ebb and flow of consciousness, there is likewise a season when the tide begins to flow homeward, and those on the path and awake to the moment witness a momentous inner shift which is called by no spoken name, but is profoundly known. She recognized an inner changing—it was well upon her now. Looking back, she realized that it had been coming on, having not felt quite like herself for a long time. A central core instinct whispered that some sort of preparation needed to take place. What preparation and preparation for what? This and other questions rose to the surface as surely as air bubbles rise to the surface of a quiet pool. This ambiguous drive to prepare for something unknown was disconcerting and made her feel uneasy. It was both strong and subtle like a vine of a leafy plant creeping out of the moist shadows toward the brightness of the sunlight—it was the alchemy of transformation. She felt that she needed a quiet place, a sheltered spot of some kind away from the fray of noise and disruption, but how would she be guided? It dawned on her that she was standing almost at the center of a garden and, looking around, suddenly grasped that a perfect place had magically appeared right in front of her. A magnificent ficus tree, planted long ago, was rooted firmly in the earth and reached upward toward the blue sky. She had a sense the tree was actually calling her to come forth. Momentarily, she paused to notice light streaming down through the broad canopy of branches and leaves which formed patterns of shade and brightness on the ground. All was silent. She heard a beautiful 28

Sarasota/Manatee Edition

sound from somewhere far away which evolved into a song with a familiar melody. Si-lent day, Holy-day. All is calm, life guides the way. Then the atmosphere became silent quiet again, except for the occasional rustle of leaves or the cry of a bird. This is it! This is the place where it will happen! I will make the change here. In the mystery of living and dying, there is a secret which is known only to highly observant initiates. It is a truth that colors the entire character of life itself. The secret is this: Nothing changes without causing a window of opportunity for some measure of enlightenment to unfold. This understanding is an ingredient for the kind of real magic that can turn lead into gold. As she began the arduous task of climbing the tree, she experienced a swooning weakness and sank deeply into her own being toward a place of darkness. Loosening the anterior half of her body, she swung wildly into the air, only to thump back into the bark on the trunk of the tree. This brought her back into her senses, and she felt around for a secure foothold until she stabilized herself. Presently, she knew that she could now face the climb. Step by step, inch by inch, she did face it, and by the time the sun’s rays emerged from the zenith of the sky, she was traveling the high branches. The movement of a slight breeze underneath gave rise to a rapidly growing sense of exhilaration. She was one with the meditation of the climb, but as the sun passed behind a cloud, the exhilaration began to fade into delirium. What on God’s green earth possessed me to travel so far away from the ground. She wept her little tears. This is a place of no return, and I still don’t know

www.nasrq.com

what’s happening to me. Still…I have no idea…still…still…still... Yes, that’s it! That’s the answer—Be still and know! In the clear light of this awakening, there appeared from within her body a fine silken thread of a lifeline, almost invisible to the naked eye. With unfaltering expertise, she began to spin the crystalline sepulcher that would house the next bardo. What would happen in the isolation of that delicate crypt is beyond words and one of super-nature’s mysteries. Every creature must ascend to the temple of the soul by means of his or her own journey. The path from the dimension of creatureliness to that of inner space is a solitary privilege which cannot be stolen by storytellers or revealed too prematurely. In the cycle where outward dormancy for a time rules, and which we describe from the outside as “unresponsive,” who can say what demons, angels or visions that flesh is heir to? Most approach the shore of that kingdom as witnesses or guardians, and are filled with their own dreams and visions to interpret clearly. Days pass followed by long nights. The moon waxes and wanes, and the night ushers in the comforting hymns of tree frogs and the cricket people. Everything is still, but everything is changing. The waiting is relentless, yet timeless. All is swallowed into one simultaneous moment, and in that moment, a new paradox arises which is sad, but joyful. Death abides in birth, and birth abides in death, and our little frames are shaken by the greatness of life as we too struggle in the wake of change to be born into our own new worlds. In her moment of rebirth, if we could have heard with the ears of a fox or an owl, then we would have heard an infinitesimal vibration—a tiny delicate sound of becoming. If we could have seen with the eyes of an eagle, then we would have noticed a vast space appear above the horizon. The earth would seem smaller, and arising into the light would emerge a splendid, luminescent winged creature. The soul resurrects in a new butterfly form. Shining corridors of space and light beckon gently onward. The butterfly is a character in nature’s sacred book that shows us how a creature must die to become a new creature.

ave you experienced those days where you just could not think straight? Most of us have. Can you recall how it felt when you came down with the flu or a fever? What about an intestinal virus? Now imagine if you had those mental symptoms on a daily basis to a somewhat milder extent. Brain fog is subtler; however, it is similar. Our brains are vulnerable to stress which causes a malfunction in our internal computer interfaces. Communication becomes disrupted when it seems like there is molasses in our gears. Thoughts are slower, and answers come, but they take effort to formulate. Even simple tasks require work and energy than normal. Our moods and memories can also be affected, or there could be related general fatigue and generalized muscle aches that frequently begin prior to the brain fog. Often, gastrointestinal signs like those of reflux or of irritable bowel precede the mental symptoms too. Many challenges can result in brain imbalances which cause mental and emotional disorders. We might experience bacterial, fungal or viral infections, a buildup of toxins like alcohol, mold and lead, sleep deprivation, multiple small brain injuries, food triggers like gluten and casein, vascular disease and cirrhosis, and different types of psychological stress. Functional medicine is the ideal specialty to address the root of brain fog because this modality looks at the various symptoms from a systems-based perspective. Rather than simply seeking a diagnosis so that a treatment can be prescribed, functional medicine finds the cause of these symptoms. A functional medicine practitioner looks at genetic predispositions that were present before you developed a symptom like slow thinking. The doctor will examine possible triggers for the problem like a toxic environmental exposure (mercury from a tuna fish diet), then evaluate the mediators of damage such as a secondary immunologic reaction to the toxic damage caused by the direct exposure to the mercury. This makes it possible to intervene with specific recommendations that address and potentially eliminate the cause to promote both healing and rebuilding.

The Dangers of POLITICAL STRESS & How To Avert Them!

he American Psychological Association’s recent Stress in America survey revealed record levels of DEEP STRESS on the part of Americans. The major culprit for this deep level of damaging stress is Political Stress. The article stated that “Symptoms for Political Stress include the 4 D’s.” The 4 D’s include: Depression, Discombobulation, Deep Distress, Dysphoria. Discombobulation means bewildered, confused, muddled, mystified, perplexed and disoriented. Dysphoria refers to generalized dissatisfaction with life, mental discomfort, suffering, feeling awful, anxious and miserable. Many individuals stated that the daily TV news has a depressing effect on them. As stress becomes chronic, many individuals attempt to cope quietly and passively This is consistent with theories about chronic stress & trauma and how (if unaddressed) it can lead to serious health problems. A new normal often sets in, and after a while, many individuals don’t even realize the high levels of stress that they are experiencing. This then opens them up to health risks such as Chronic Indigestion, Chronic pain, various Sleep issues, Heart issues and High Blood Pressure.

CHASING ZZZZZs How to Put Insomnia to Rest by Marlaina Donato

T

ossing and turning most of the night while obsessing about the need for sleep is a torture we all go through every now and then, but for the 40 percent of Americans dealing with current or chronic insomnia, it can be a regular nightmare. In fact, 50 to 70 million adults in the U.S. suffer from some form of sleep disorder, according to the American Sleep Association. The causes are multi-faceted: stress, pharmaceutical side effects, hormonal imbalances, chronic pain, anxiety and too much caffeine all fuel the insomnia loop. Add to that the overstimulation from 24/7 technology, social pressures and unresolved emotional pain, and it’s easy to see why long, hard, sleepless nights have become a worldwide epidemic. The effects are profound. Compromised sleep not only leads to decreased quality of life, malnourished relationships, a heightened risk of accidents and inferior job performance, but also lowered immunity and chronic inflammation, raising the odds of heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, weight gain and diabetes. About 90 percent of people diagnosed with depression also experience sleep deprivation, and many antidepressant medications can disrupt the ability to fall asleep and dream. However, a number of natural and holistic approaches can provide lasting 32

Sarasota/Manatee Edition

results without undesirable side effects. Along with tried-and-true methods like acupuncture, therapeutic massage and changes in diet and exercise, the National Sleep Foundation recommends mindful breathing and meditation. New options are emerging to help foster quality sleep, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), non-psychoactive CBD oil and lifestyle changes supporting a healthy circadian rhythm.

Body and Mind, a Tangled Web

Psychological, emotional and physical health all play a role in our ability—or inability—to get a good night’s rest. “Not sleeping well is a sign of a deeper imbalance that needs to be addressed. So, if we’re masking the problem with medication, the underlying cause remains unaddressed,” says Elina Winnel, a sleep coach who works online with clients at TheSleepExpert.com. “Insomnia is a complex issue that has psychological components, but is also affected by deeper mechanisms, including an imbalance between the two main branches of the autonomic nervous system.” The intricate connection between emotion and sleep-robbing stress hormones explains why insomniacs are often caught in an undertow of racing thoughts and preoc-

cupations. Says Winnel, “Stress has become the norm, and most people don’t even realize they’re in that state. This produces stress hormones and can prevent the natural process of sleep from occurring.” Stress also depletes vitamin B and magnesium levels necessary for quality sleep, she adds. Cindy Davies, owner of the Holistic Sleep Center, in Ferndale, Michigan, has similar views on the role emotion plays in troubled sleep patterns. “We’re chronically suppressing our feelings throughout the day. Our inability to address these emotions culminates in a night spent in bed awake with fears and worries,” she says. “Pushing ourselves to the point of exhaustion can help defend ourselves against dealing with feelings or memories, but impairs our ability to sleep restfully or restoratively.”

Resetting Inherent Rhythms

Circadian rhythm, our biological clock, is a cellular marvel that is affected by light and internal changes in temperature. Stephanie Silberman, Ph.D., a licensed psychologist in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, and Fellow of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, explains that it’s helpful to have a circadian rhythm aligned with societal norms so that we’re sleepy at bedtime and active during daylight hours. “When a person’s circadian rhythm is delayed, they will have trouble falling

asleep at a regular bedtime, and when it’s advanced, experience sleepiness too early in the evening and then [have] early morning awakenings.” Circadian rhythm regulates digestion, cellular repair, hormones and many other functions. It also slows down the metabolism during night hours, helping us to stay asleep. “The circadian rhythm can be disrupted by many factors, including traveling to a different time zone, shift work and exposure to blue light late at night while binge-watching your favorite series,” says Winnel. Our natural hormonal rhythms are wired to release melatonin at certain

times, allowing us to rest frequently during the day. Davies explains that an adult’s body is designed for periods of rest every 90 minutes. “Most people don’t have the opportunity to rest every 90 minutes, but if we were able to, we’d be going to bed in a state of rest, instead of exhaustion,” she says. Our bodies start producing melatonin around 9 p.m., when we should already be winding down, but too often we push ourselves to stay up to watch TV or have “me-time”, says Davies. “In reality, going to bed is the best me-time we can have.” Herbalist and licensed psychotherapist Jenn J. Allen, in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania,

Stress has become the norm, and most people don’t even realize they’re in that state. This produces stress hormones and can prevent the natural process of sleep from occurring. ~Elina Winnel

Sleep Tips Ljupco Smokovski/Shutterstock.com

For healthy circadian rhythm and melatonin cycles, try:

4 Shutting off all screen devices, including the TV, two hours before going to bed 4 Going to bed when you get that 9 p.m. slump and just taping a favorite show 4 Walking barefoot and feeling the earth 4 Spending quality time outside in sunlight, preferably in a natural setting 4 Taking nourishing baths with natural soaps, lavender essential oil or herbs 4 Designating certain time slots to not answer the phone or answer emails 4 Exercising regularly and not within three hours of bedtime 4 Taking a break from work every 90 minutes for two minutes of slow, deep breathing 4 Breaking the caffeine habit by replacing coffee and tea with healthier alternatives

For emotional components of insomnia, try:

4 Going on a “worry fast” for five or 10 minutes, and then practice doing it for an hour or a full day 4 Reserving time with loved ones for in-person conversations and get-togethers 4 Checking in with yourself and acknowledging all emotions and fears without judgment 4 Setting aside ambitions for a day to recharge 4 Sleeping in without guilt—shopping and running errands can wait 4 Choosing not to compare your life with others

adds, “People spend up to 10 hours a day on electronic devices, which directly impacts melatonin production and stimulates the fight-or-flight response system in the brain.”

Two Sides of Every Brain

Smartphones and social media have piled even more on our plate, even if we enjoy them. “We’re expected to be constantly ‘on’ and reachable 24/7,” observes Winnel. “This leads to an excessive reliance on our sympathetic nervous system and difficulty switching brainwave states from beta—associated with alertness—to theta and delta, which we experience during sleep. Through practice and specific exercises, it can become easier for us to reach the state of mind needed to nod off.” To support healthier sleep patterns, Winnel emphasizes the importance of using both hemispheres of the brain while awake. “Particularly in our professional lives, logical and rational processes are rewarded, while creativity is seen as optional. This can cause a chronic imbalance in the way we use the two hemispheres of our brain. Optimal sleep requires equalized functioning in the neurological structures that are unique to each hemisphere.” Mindful breathing and alternate-nostril yogic breathwork can also bring harmony to both hemispheres of the brain and promote deep relaxation.

Promising Plant Allies

Chronic pain can also prevent sound sleep. Allen stresses, “It’s important to understand what is actually causing pain and what type of pain it is. Some chronic pain comes from postural issues or injuries, so massage, chiropractic or gentle movement like yoga can help to drastically reduce the intensity of pain.” Identifying nutritional deficiencies and supporting the nervous system is also key. “Plants work both physiologically and energetically. Gentle nervine herbs like oats or chamomile can help to soothe the nervous system, and are effective for children and teens. Adaptogenic plants are known historically for helping the body to resist physical, chemical or biological stresses. Tulsi and ashwagandha, when taken consistently, can be useful in helping November 2019

adults to combat stress,” Allen says, reminding us to also check with a healthcare professional to avoid contraindications. Going for that extra cup of coffee during the day or pouring a drink or two in the evening are habits that only exacerbate sleep issues. “Caffeine suppresses our body’s ability to feel tired, not by giving us energy, but by increasing the production of adrenaline and suppressing the production of melatonin. Alcohol, like some prescription medications, can interfere with our ability to fall asleep, sleep deeply and experience dreaming states,” cautions Davies. CBD oil derived from the cannabis plant is an effective pain-reducer and helps to regulate healthy sleep patterns. Cannabidiol (CBD), which does not contain THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the chemical substance in marijuana responsible for inducing a high, is available as capsules, inhalers and tinctures.

Learning New Tricks

Many sleep-seeking people are reaping the benefits from cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I). The American College of Physicians recommends it as the first-line therapy for insomnia ahead

of medication, citing that it improves sleep and daytime functioning in 70 to 80 percent of treated persons, often without supplemental medication. A meta-analysis published in The Journal of the American Medical Association in 2015 shows that CBT-I can resolve insomnia for 35 percent of people with sleeplessness linked to existing medical and psychiatric conditions such as fibromyalgia or PTSD. CBT-I helps to change long-held patterns. “CBT includes keeping sleep logs, improving sleep hygiene, learning ways to decrease anxiety and how to associate the bed as a place where we sleep well, instead of the maladaptive thinking that it’s a place to toss and turn,” says Silberman. CBT can also be helpful for chronic pain and other physical problems when underlying issues are treated in conjunction. A good night’s rest is indeed possible. Davies says, “In order to really change our ability to sleep, we need a complete cultural mindset shift that prioritizes sleep and our need to rest.” Marlaina Donato is the author of several books and a composer. Energy Clearing for All Seasons of Life

by Mary-Elizabeth Schurrer

“F

rom the outside, looking in, I had the ‘picture perfect’ life—a wonderful husband and two kids, a successful marketing company, a beautiful home and fabulous vacations. I seemed like a true pillar of the community. However, on the inside, a storm was ready to make landfall,” remarks Lara Jaye, an intuitive coach and spiritual mentor, who is based in Sarasota but uses her dynamic modalities and over 25 years of experience to impact lives across the globe. In response to how she initially came to pursue this unique and soul-inspiring work, Jaye enumerates, “I struggled with depression, a major health crisis, self-hatred, an empty nest, the end of my 25-year marriage and increased frustration with my marketing company that I didn’t have the strength to sustain. As a last-ditch effort, I began to seek alternate options to heal such as meditation, Reiki and light language. Soon this unique language came through my own voice, and as a result, I now speak and write Light Language. “In 2020, I plan to teach others how to access this incredible and powerful channel for themselves. Living out of harmony with my own identity and no one else to guide

me into these choppy waters is where my passion for helping others stems from. I combine Reiki energy healing and light language in moving stuck energy—imprints, patterns, entities, spirits and more— from people, places, land or businesses. There are only a few people in the world attuned to Light Language, but more and more are introduced to it each day.” This profound inner sojourn took her from emotional burnout and transitional chaos to personal discovery, renewed stamina, a deep-rooted sense of empowerment, and the urge to help others achieve that same feeling of purpose in their own stories—an undertaking that would also transport Jaye from the Midwest to the Suncoast of Florida. “I am originally from Indianapolis, Indiana, but have been working in Sarasota since 2014,” she explains. “I find this area to be spiritually conscious, and my clients are eager to embrace new modalities to assist them along their journeys. I lead workshops, and on most Thursdays, I meet with clients at Salt of the Earth Sarasota on Clark Road. Otherwise, most of my work is done over the phone or on Zoom Video Chat with clients all over the world. In addition to customized VIP events, online courses, retreats and public speaking, here is a breakdown of the different services and modalities I offer.” • Intuitive Energy Clearing: This 60-minute session includes the clearing of blocked energy, non-serving beliefs, and stuck emotions, patterns, imprints or templates that prevent clients from becoming their truest selves. In this process, their cells are imprinted with new higher frequencies and vibrations to assist in healing. • Intuitive Spiritual Coaching: This combines learning tools for success in all areas of life in order to open clients to their own intuition. A personalized energy clearing is included in each session as well. • Home and Land Clearings: If walls

could talk, what would they reveal? Walls, spaces, homes, and land contain living energy which is often disruptive. If clients struggle to sell their homes or feel off-balanced in a new home, a space clearing would transform those negative, weak energies to allow for lighter, positive and helpful energies. Business Clearings: In addition to clearing a physical space, this process also enables business leaders and staff members to be cleared of blockages which can ultimately promote higher revenues. Shining Soul Monthly Club: These sessions occur bi-monthly over the phone and include spiritual guidance, meditations and energy clearing. This helps create a life more aligned with the spirit and values of each client. This cost is $5 initially, then $35 for each month thereafter.

Executives, business owners, influencers and leaders seek Lara Jaye to guide them or their teams professionally and personally. She helps them clear areas of their lives to allow for inner satisfaction, expanded intuition, fulfilling relationships, vibrant health and a meaningful life. Kenneth Davis on Learning From the Last Global Plague by Randy Kambic

A

long with annual flu season warnings, there’s more news than usual on the dangers of microbes and transmittable diseases, including recent domestic measles outbreaks and the rise of resistant bacteria from the improper use of antibiotics. In his latest book released earlier this year, More Deadly than War: The Hidden History of the Spanish Flu and the First World War, Kenneth C. Davis describes the worldwide epidemic that killed millions only a century ago and warns of a potential relapse. Davis is also the author of In the Shadow of Liberty, an American Library Association Notable Book and a finalist for the Youth Adult Library Service Association Award for Excellence in Nonfiction. His New York Times bestselling and critically acclaimed Don’t Know Much About book series for both adults and children makes many, sometimes esoteric facts and figures on history, The Bible, the universe, geography and other subjects come alive. Davis is a TED-Ed educator whose lectures are globally available online.

What inspired you to tackle this deadly subject?

My editor had the flu and mentioned that 36

her grandmother died of the Spanish Flu. I said that’s a fascinating subject. She said if you ever want to write about it, I’d love to know, and it was around the time that I was beginning to think about the 100th anniversary of the flu and the end of World War I. These were two extraordinary moments in modern human history that many people don’t understand.

What makes the Spanish Flu epidemic relevant today?

It was the most extraordinary pandemic in modern times, the worst since the Black Plague. So many aspects of the story can teach us lessons, like the role of propaganda that created the circumstances that allowed the flu to flourish, politicians ignoring sound science. In Philadelphia in September of 1918, the health commissioner was warned not to allow a big parade that was meant to sell war bonds. He did, and 200,000 people crowded the streets. Two days later, there was not a hospital bed left in the city. It was that sudden and explosive gathering of mass numbers of people that lit the fuse for a tremendous flu bomb to explode. It’s important to understand the connection between science and history. Often, we treat history as a collec-

www.nasrq.com

tion of dates, battles and speeches, and we don’t connect with what was going in the scientific and medical world, but these things are always closely linked together. Disease has always been more deadly than war, and that makes it more relevant than ever, because there are crises and conflict zones all over the world today. The situation is ripe for that explosion of another infectious disease.

Should we take for granted that some health risks of the past have been totally eradicated via modern medicine?

We should not. It’s dangerous to be complacent. All too often, there’s a cost in disregarding sound medical advice—what we know to be true—because we might have heard something else, and this is truer than ever with social media. The nature of the flu virus, of infectious diseases, is that they change, evolve and mutate rapidly like the Spanish Flu did.

Why do you write, “Another pandemic is a distinct possibility”?

Such pandemic diseases are often diseases of crowds. We live in a world that’s more crowded, where high-speed transportation is much more readily capable of spreading a pandemic. When we have a world in which scientific risks and information is disregarded, that’s when we have the possibility of another pandemic. Then there’s climate change. We are living in a world that’s wetter and warmer. This breeds the possibilities for more disease. When we weaken guardrails, when we don’t fund science and disease prevention properly, we take great risks.

What do you think about the stronger enforcement of vaccinations because of measles outbreaks?

We’ve had the largest outbreak of measles in decades, and it’s a disease we thought

we had pretty much defeated a long time ago. But because of the spread of misinformation, rumors and unverified scientific medical information, we have a dangerous outbreak of measles in this country. People have traveled to places where there were no vaccinations, then return home. This is a clear and very present danger of the “anti-vaxx” movement, as it’s called. It ignores long-established, peer-reviewed science over decades and unfortunately, we are in a time when someone with a megaphone or microphone or another platform can reach a lot of people with a lot of very dangerous information. We ignore sound science at great peril. Randy Kambic, of Estero, Florida, is a freelance writer and editor.

The Happy Thyroid Seven Ways to Keep It Humming

M

by Ronica O’Hara

uch of our day-to-day wellbeing—how energetic we feel, how clear our thinking is and how our body processes food—is governed by the activity of the butterflyshaped, thumb-sized thyroid gland at the base of the throat. When it’s working as it should, life is good. However, about one in eight Americans suffers from a malfunctioning thyroid, and women are five to eight times more likely than men to face the consequences. It’s a delicate balancing act. A thyroid that produces too few hormones makes us feel sluggish and constipated. We gain weight easily, have muscle cramps and experience heavy periods. Hypothyroidism, as it’s called, is linked to chronic fatigue syndrome, infertility and autism in newborns. A 2013 study published in Annals of Neurology found that pregnant women deficient in thyroid hormone are four times more likely than healthy women to produce a child with autism. If the thyroid produces too many hormones, we suffer from hyperthyroidism with a racing heart, irritability, light periods, unexplained weight loss and insomnia; it can lead to hardening of the 38

Sarasota/Manatee Edition

arteries and heart failure later in life, according to a study in Circulation Research. The good news is that there are simple and effective strategies that can optimize thyroid function and avoid these potential health setbacks, say experts. Their recommendations:

1

Keep up mineral levels. The thyroid needs iodine to churn out hormones, and usually iodized salt or sea salt with natural iodine can supply most of our daily needs of 150 micrograms. Sardines, shrimp, seaweed, yogurt, eggs and capers are also rich in iodine. However, too much of a good thing can tip the balance in the other direction, so practice moderation with super-charged iodine foods like cranberries: A fourounce serving contains twice the daily requirement. In addition, our thyroids need selenium (one or two Brazil nuts a day will do it) and zinc (nuts, legumes and chocolate) to function optimally.

2

Eat fermented foods. About 20

percent of the conversion of inactive thyroid hormone (T4) into active hormone (T3) takes place in our gut,

www.nasrq.com

which makes “good” bacteria critically important. Andrea Beaman, a New York City health coach and author of Happy Healthy Thyroid: The Essential Steps to Healing Naturally, recommends probiotics like cultured vegetables, kimchi, sauerkraut and sourdough bread, as well as prebiotics like root vegetables, plantain, burdock and dandelion root.

3

Filter drinking water. “Fluo-

ride and chlorine are elements that can block the absorption of iodine into the thyroid,” says Elizabeth Boham, M.D., a functional medicine doctor at the UltraWellness Center, in Lenox, Massachusetts. A reverse-osmosis filter or a high-end pitcher filter will remove chlorine, as well as fluoride, which British researchers have linked to a 30 percent higher rate of hypothyroidism.

4

Detox cosmetics. Phthalates are

endocrine-disrupting chemicals found in cosmetics, nail polish and shampoos; they are also in plastic toys, and 3-year-old girls exposed to phthalates have shown depressed thyroid function, Columbia University scientists report. Research cosmetics and find toxin-free alternatives at the Environmental Working Group Skin Deep Cosmetics Database. (ewg.org/skindeep).

5

Wake up easy. About 85 per-

cent of thyroid diseases involve an underactive thyroid, says Beaman, adding that it is often the body’s pushback against frenzied, stressful lifestyles: “The thyroid is literally slowing down—our body is saying, ‘Slow, slow, go slow.’” For a low-key start to the day, she suggests not using an alarm clock if possible, and then doing some long, slow stretching and

deep breathing. “It takes just five minutes, and you’re starting the day not in fight-or-flight mode, but in a fully relaxed and fully oxygenated body.”

6

Talk it out. In Eastern philosophy, the thyroid in the

throat is located at the fifth chakra, the energy center of expression and communication, Beaman says. If we find ourselves either regularly shouting or choking back our words, “it helps, if you want to support your thyroid on a deep emotional level, to express yourself somehow, some way, to someone somewhere,” such as to a therapist, family member or good friend.

7

Do yoga asanas. “Poses such as plow pose, fish pose,

boat pose and cobra can improve blood circulation to the thyroid gland, which is imperative for its health,” says Stacy Thewis, a registered nurse, certified wellness coach and gut-brain expert in Mellen, Wisconsin. In a study in the Journal of Complementary and Integrative Medicine, 22 women with hypothyroidism that practiced yoga for six months needed significantly less thyroid medication.

o verify a possible thyroid condition, consult a doctor, endocrinologist, functional medicine doctor or naturopathic doctor. Ask for a range of tests, not only the standard thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) test, but also free T4, free T3, thyroid antibodies for autoimmune reactions, and thyroidreleasing hormone (TRH) tests for a full picture. The standard pharmaceutical approach for hypothyroidism, the most common condition, is the synthetic hormone levothyroxine (Levoxyl, Synthroid, Unithroid) that boosts T4 production; but it can cause depression and weight gain, researchers at Chicago-based Rush University Medical Center report in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism. Ask also about Armour Thyroid, derived from animal thyroids, that contains both T3 and T4, and is often preferred by functional medicine doctors. Other testing can uncover a reaction to gluten, which is often linked to thyroid dysfunction. “For many with thyroid issues, gluten can provoke an autoimmune response via celiac disease or non-celiac gluten sensitivity,” says registered dietitian nutritionist and health coach Amanda Wikan, of Petaluma, California. If a celiac test is negative, she suggests trying a six-week, gluten-free diet and watching afterward for any signs of non-celiac sensitivity such as headaches, bloating, gas or brain fog. ZENFUL EATING Mindful Meals in Quiet Gratitude by April Thompson

I

n Zen monasteries, the head cook (known as the tenzo) is one of the most important positions a monk can hold; Eihei Dogen, founder of Soto Zen, one of the longest-established sects of Buddhism, said this is “because the position requires wholehearted practice.” In the 13th-century volume Instructions for the Zen Cook, Dogen wrote, “In preparing food, it is essential to be sincere and to respect each ingredient, regardless of how coarse or fine.” Rituals around food are an important element of Buddhism, as with many spiritual traditions. But we don’t have to be a Buddhist or a practiced meditator to learn how to cook more mindfully, enjoy meals more fully and eat in better balance. “Cooking can be a meditation. We cook with all our senses: We taste, touch and listen to determine if the pan is hot enough. You just have to be mindful,” says Jean-Philippe Cyr, author of The Buddhist Chef: 100 Simple, Feel-Good Vegan Recipes. “Cooking is an act of love and generosity, so cooking should be done with care—taking the time to consider the ingredients and overall flavors of the meal, storing the vegetables properly, paying attention while you chop. These things are the foundation of a great meal,” says

Gesshin Claire Greenwood, an ordained Zen priest in San Francisco. Greenwood trained in Buddhist monasteries in Japan for more than five years, experiences she draws from in her recent memoir and cookbook Just Enough: Vegan Recipes and Stories from Japan’s Buddhist Temples. While vegetarianism is encouraged in all schools of Buddhism and most monasteries abstain from meat, it is not a strict requirement. Cyr, a vegan and practicing Buddhist of 20 years, takes seriously the concept of ahimsa, or “do no harm”, as a chef. “Veganism and Buddhism share the common value of compassion—compassion towards animals, as well as the Earth. Climate change caused by meat consumption causes a lot of harm, too,” says Cyr, of rural Quebec, Canada. The “middle way” is an important Buddhist principle in the kitchen—striking the balance between indulgence and deprivation—the “just enough” in Greenwood’s cookbook title. “It’s important to use enough salt so that the food tastes good, but not so much that it’s overpowering. When we shop for food or eat a meal, we can also pay attention to when we’ve had enough,” she says.

Natural Awakenings recommends using organic, non-GMO (genetically modified) and non-bromated ingredients whenever possible. 40

Mindful eating can open up a beautiful new relationship to food, says Jan Chozen Bays, a Zen Buddhist priest and co-abbot of Great Vow Zen Monastery, in Clatskanie, Oregon. “This country is in an epidemic of out-of-balance eating. People are stressed out and fearful about eating, but cooking and eating should be inherently pleasurable human activities,” says Bays, the author of Mindful Eating: A Guide to Rediscovering a Healthy and Joyful Relationship with Food. “In Zen practice, mindful rituals help us learn to be present and peaceful during meals.” Mindful eating is not about restrictions, but rather about curiosity and investigation—an adventure for the senses, says Bays. “Research shows that diets don’t work, as they rely on external sources rather than helping you to go inward and tap into the innate wisdom of your body.”

Tuning In at Mealtime Rushing through meals mindlessly, we’ve become deaf to our body’s own signals of satiety, says Bays. “Go to the supermarket when you’re hungry, and head to the perimeter where the real food is and stop and ask your body, ‘Would you like oranges? Would broccoli be good for us?’ Tune into your cellular hunger,” she says. At the Great Vow Zen Monastery, the first morning meal is conducted in silence, along “with a prayer to bring gratitude for the food and to all living beings whose life flows to us in our food,” says Bays, adding that research shows ceremonies and moments of reflection lead to more mindful, healthy eating. “Instead of talking on the phone, try cooking in silence. Drawing your awareness to details like the smell of basil, the color of tomato and the touch of the spoon brings so much richness to the act of cooking,” says Bays. Such a focus leads to a sense of appreciation for the ingredients of meals and life, says Myoju Erin Merk, a priest at the San Francisco Zen Center. “Making a meal is an active extension of our ‘sitting’ (meditation) practice.” Connect with Washington, D.C. freelance writer April Thompson at AprilWrites.com.

ere are a few simple tips from Buddhist priests and cooks on making mealtime more mindful. Have a mid-meal gut check, suggests Jan Chozen Bays. “When your stomach feels three-quarters full, have a conversation with a friend or have something to drink before continuing to eat. Often you will find after 20 minutes you are actually full,” says the author and priest. Myoju Erin Merk, a priest at the San Francisco Zen Center, suggests setting a phone timer in the kitchen to mark it as a practice time to tune into the senses. “Try to slow down and notice what’s happening as you cook. Try to stay with the sensory experience and not judge everything, like whether the carrot is cut right. It can be a very relaxing and peaceful way to work in the kitchen.” Make the first few sips or bites of a meal mindful, spending the first few moments in silence if possible, says Bays. “Working quietly with that pile of carrots or onions, you have space to focus on just one task,” adds Merk. Incorporating all of the five tastes of Buddhism—salty, sweet, sour, bitter and umami (savory)—is another way to bring meals in balance, according to author and priest Gesshin Claire Greenwood. “Having all of these flavors represented makes a meal feel balanced and satisfying.”

The

in stress-associated hormones after they were exposed to chronic stress. In the stressed subjects who received acupuncture, stress hormone levels were similar to those in the control subjects who were not under chronic stress which suggests the ancient healing modality helps to normalize stress hormone levels. Here are some specific advantages to acupuncture as part of a consistent wellness regimen.

Acupuncture Reduces Stress, Both Now and Later Too By Dr. Jenna Peterson

A

ccording to The American Institute of Stress, there are over 50 common signs and symptoms of stress, from discomforts as small as headaches and grinding teeth to issues as large as frequent colds and heart palpitations. While stress is something we cannot entirely avoid, learning how to handle stress is especially important to overall health and well-being. A new study conducted by Ladan Eshkevari, the assistant program director of the nurse anesthesia program at Georgetown University School of Nursing and Health Studies, found that stimulating certain body points with acupuncture can alter stress hormones. The body’s stress response is triggered by two main pathways—one is the HPA axis (hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis), in which these areas of the brain are activated to release peptides and proteins such as CRH (corticotropin-releasing hormone). These pathways launch the production of other hormones such as cortisol and norepinephrine that increase the anxiety meter. Once these are activated, the system causes the heart to beat faster and senses to heighten. It also diverts the body’s energy from other operations, such as digestion, to prime and fuel the muscles into a state of readiness. All of this is normal and necessary for protecting ourselves from potential threats. However, when stress becomes chronic and starts beating us down, it is no longer helpful and can become harmful. At this point, we could experience long-term symptoms such as memory impairment, depression, digestive problems, obesity, sleep problems and heart disease. However, in Eshkevari’s study, it was found that when subjects were pre-treated with acupuncture, there was no spike

1. It doesn’t hurt. While some people are more needle sensitive than others, the main sensation that is experienced while receiving acupuncture is light pressure where the needle is placed. As the needle penetrates, you could feel an initial pinch, but usually not. Then, as the needle connects with the Qi, there is a small tug or push in that area—nothing traumatic or eventful through. It’s common to fall asleep during treatment or relax into a peaceful meditative state, in fact. 2. The monthly cycle is no longer a “monster.” Do you (or your significant other) turn into the “before” version of yourself from the Snickers commercial during that time of month? Acupuncture is effective in tackling these hormonal issues. As the body and hormones regulate with acupuncture treatments, Chinese Herbal Medicine can be used to nourish, balance and strengthen the internal organs between treatments so you can banish the symptoms of PMS. Don’t be offended if your boyfriend calls to book you an appointment—accept the gesture and thank him later when you leave the office feeling renewed and invigorated. 3. It can cause a (legal) high. People who have experienced acupuncture can attest to this: You can feel high as a kite after receiving an acupuncture treatment. When you come in for a session, most of the time, you might feel stressed, angry, depressed or stagnant in some area of life. Acupuncture works on a meridian matrix that affects the central nervous system, so while you are receiving the treatment, endorphins are released which lull you into a state of calm. Once the treatment is over, most patients feel relaxed, content, and more equipped to tackle the obstacles handed to them. This is another reason I love acupuncture—I could spend 60-90 minutes working on a massage patient, only to later find out their sense of relaxation disappeared when someone cut them off or honked at them in traffic. But research shows that acupuncture has a lasting and cumulative effect on our nervous systems, so the benefits will not immediately wear off. Dr. Jenna Peterson, an adjunct faculty member at East West College of Natural Medicine since 2016, has been treating patients for over 25 years. She received her Master’s degree in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (MAOM) from AOMA Graduate School of Integrative Medicine 2012. She specializes in the treatment of chronic pain, esoteric acupuncture, facial rejuvenation and nutrition. Dr. Jenna is passionate about partnering with her patients to help them achieve the results they want and need, whether that means improving their athletic performance, feeling and looking younger, or a complete “180-degree lifestyle makeover.” November 2019

Click and Sweat Virtual Workouts Change the Game

W

by Julie Peterson

elcome to the digital age, where budding gym rats, former couch potatoes and schedule-challenged fitness freaks are finding new ways to get in shape. These days, virtually anyone with a smartphone or Wi-Fi connection can connect with a yoga video, a spin class or any number of personal exercise experiences. Some folks are wearing devices that calculate distance and monitor bodily functions—then post it all to social media. Private trainers are offering online workout routines with motivational emails and text messages, while some gyms include online

training as an add-on to membership or leverage technology to provide classes to consumers globally. Virtual fitness is growing in leaps and bounds. The use of health and fitness apps has more than tripled since 2014, and three-quarters of active users open their apps at least twice a week, according to Flurry Analytics. Yet, it’s not for everyone. Erin Nitschke, Ed.D., of Cheyenne, Wyoming, the director of educational partnerships and programs at the National Federation of Professional Trainers, is monitoring the upsurge in virtual fitness and believes it will take time to perfect the

The convenience and affordability of virtual training has some clients thriving on their ability to marry technological tools to fitness goals. They can log in anytime, anywhere, even while travelling; take a variety of classes from famous trainers for a fraction of the cost of in-person sessions and receive emails or texts that provide encouragement to reach the next level. For those new to exercising, virtual training eases self-consciousness. It’s an opportunity to learn the basics and begin the process of toning up at home before venturing into an unfamiliar environment where everyone seems to know what they’re doing. In this respect, virtual training can serve as a gateway to establishing a fitness routine that eventually leads to the local gym. “One of the most frequent reasons people cite for not maintaining a regular exercise habit is lack of time,” says American Council on Exercise President and Chief Science Officer Cedric Bryant, Ph.D., of Redmond, Washington. He points out that virtual tools and devices may help eliminate some of those time barriers, allowing people to get quality workouts.

The Real Deal But some people go to the gym or attend fitness classes because they enjoy the social connection more than the sweat. Nitschke says that social support can be a predictor of success, so it’s possible that virtual training can have a negative impact. Bryant

Making a Virtual Connection Logging in with a high-speed internet connection, gathering required equipment in advance and possessing self-motivation might prevent getting discouraged. However, overconfidence can lead to injury, so being fully aware of limitations is essential before taking a dive off the recliner directly into a series of lunges. For social butterflies, a real-live friend to login with may be necessary to make virtual training fun. Fitness training may be forever changed by technology, but Nitschke says it remains to be seen if fitness professionals can respond to individual learning styles to foster success and elevate the fitness client’s virtual experience. agrees. “There are different fitness personality types, and some need the live and in-person experience.” Bryant points out that gyms and trainers often request health information and fitness goals beforehand to provide clients a more customized program. In-person instruction also has the benefit of immediate feedback to ensure safe, effective and proper technique. Erika Hetzel, a Pilates instructor and personal trainer in Dane County, Wisconsin, believes that virtual workouts are fine for people that have attended classes enough to know the exercises and have good body awareness. “For beginners, hands-on cues and modifications are important, especially if there are any contraindications for exercise.” She carefully monitors her clients for form and doesn’t plan to offer virtual training because it’s impossible to give clients bodily adjustments. “It leaves trainees at risk of not getting full benefit or getting hurt,” Hetzel says. “An effective workout is about the quality of the movements.” Bryant says that instructor interaction is a plus; however, the best virtual workouts give detailed instruction and regression or progression of all moves, allowing participants to choose an appropriate intensity level.

ENOUGH FOR ALL In Pursuit of Grateful Living

G

by Brother David Steindl-Rast

rateful living is the awareness that we stand on holy ground— always—in touch with mystery. Jewish sages interpret the words of Genesis 3:5 in a way that is of great relevance to grateful living. “Take off your shoes; the ground on which you stand is holy ground.” The soles of your shoes are leather—dead animal skin. Take off the deadness of being-used-to-it and your live souls will feel that you are standing on holy ground, wherever you are. It is pretty evident that greed, oppression and violence have led us to a point of self-destruction. Our survival depends on a radical change; if the gratitude movement grows strong and deep enough, it may bring about this necessary change. Grateful living brings in place of greed, sharing; in place of oppression, respect; and in place of violence, peace. Who does not long for a world of sharing, mutual respect and peace? Exploitation springs from greed and a sense of scarcity. Grateful living makes us aware that there is enough for all. Thus, it leads to a sense of sufficiency and a joyful willingness to share with others. Oppression is necessary if we want to exploit others. The more power you have, the more efficiently you can exploit those

below you and protect yourself against those above you. But grateful people live with a sense of sufficiency—they need not exploit others—thus, oppression is replaced by mutual support and by equal respect for all. Violence springs from the root of fear—fear that there may not be enough for all, fear of others as potential competitors, fear of foreigners and strangers. But the grateful person is fearless. Thereby, she cuts off the very root of violence. Out of a sense-of-enough, she is willing to share, and thereby tends to eliminate the unjust distribution of wealth that creates the climate for violence. Fearlessly, she welcomes the new and strange, is enriched by differences and celebrates variety. Grateful eyes look at whatever is as if they had never seen it before and caress it as if they would never see it again. This is a most realistic attitude, for every moment is indeed unique. Coming Home to Roost by Julie Peterson

L

ocavores with a hankering for fresh, organic eggs produced close to home have sparked a resurgence in backyard chicken keeping; even people that don’t like omelets are getting in on the trend. It turns out that the little descendants of dinosaurs make fascinating, low-maintenance pets. “You can’t watch a chicken running across the yard and not have your mood lifted,” says Shana Cobin, who has owned chickens for four years. A veterinary staff member, she takes in rescues on her small farm in Foster, Rhode Island. Her current flock of eight chickens has room to forage with a turkey, some goats and sheep. At night, her birds sleep in a predator-proof chicken coop. As a vegan, Cobin gifts the eggs to others. “It’s gratifying to give eggs to friends and family who might otherwise buy eggs from factory farms,” says Cobin. “It’s as if I’m helping those hens, too.” Those country chickens could be city chickens—if the municipality allows. An increasing number do, with a few rules.

Roosters aren’t usually allowed (think crowing at 4 a.m.); the number of hens is limited; and they can’t roam the neighborhood. Local ordinances vary widely and change frequently, so be sure to get the facts for each area.

Bird Benefits

Chickens are relatively simple and inexpensive to maintain. They come in a variety of sizes and colors, are easy to bond with and their entertainment value can’t be underrated. “You will enjoy watching them for hours,” says Andy G. Schneider, of Georgia, the national spokesperson for the Avian

Drawbacks

Like all pets, chickens need regular maintenance. They can get parasites such as mites or worms, or become sick. But the hardest thing about maintaining chickens is keeping them safe, according to Lisa Steele, a rural Maine farmer and author of 101 Chicken Keeping Hacks From Fresh Eggs Daily: Tips, Tricks, and Ideas for You and Your Hens. “No matter where you live, there is something that wants to kill or eat your chickens. A secure coop and run or pen are important,” Steele says. The family dog, fox, coyotes, raccoons, owls and hawks are just some of the many potential predators. If a rooster is in the flock, he instinctively protects hens from perceived danger—great for predators, but not necessarily a desirable pet. They crow louder, earlier and more often than most would expect. Unless eggs to hatch are wanted, no rooster is needed.

Health Program run by the Animal Plant Health and Inspection Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture who has authored three books on chickens. He says that keeping chickens is also a good way for children to learn responsibility and where their food comes from. He says, “They are living animals that depend on their owners and can live for 10 years or longer.” Backyard flocks readily compost food waste and hunt insects to eat. Their nitrogen-rich droppings and old bedding from the coop can fertilize gardens, or the chickens can be let loose in garden areas to fertilize and weed at the same time. However, they will eat desirable plants, so consider fencing off a fallow section of garden where they can prepare the ground for the next crop. Composting, fertilizing, weeding and pest control are benefits that even matronly hens that have slowed egg production still provide. The miracle of producing an egg is a journey of its own. Rarely does a child— or grownup—squeal with as much glee as when the pet hen lays her first egg. Add the excitement of double-yolkers and tiny, yolkless “fairy eggs”, and collecting the hens’ bounty is a daily adventure.

be started with adult hens or chicks from a hatchery or breeder. Steele points out that it’s important to get chicks from a reputable breeder and start them off with good-quality feed, room to exercise, fresh air and clean water. Coops can be built from plans or purchased. There is a trendy industry for palatial coops replete with window boxes, but the necessities include enough space for each chicken, roosting bars to sleep on, nesting boxes to lay eggs, good ventilation and predator-proofing. “The curtains, wallpaper and twinkle lights are fun, but not necessary,” says Steele. Chicken Facts n Newly hatched chickens are “chicks”. The young males

are cockerels, the young females are pullets. After one year, they are roosters and hens.

n Chickens see in color and can see UV rays, according

to FreshEggsDaily.com. They have one eye sighted in for distance and one for close-up vision so that they can look for seeds and bugs on the ground while simultaneously searching the sky for aerial predators. n The life expectancy of a hen varies from three to 12

years, depending on size, breed and safety from predators.

n Roosters instinctively protect hens from predators or

any perceived danger (including people) by sounding an alarm, and then facing the danger as hens run and hide.

“When we wake up in the morning, the first words we say are those of gratitude that we have awakened and have the opportunity for a new day.” At dinner time, some families play “a rose, a thorn, a bud”—with each person saying what happened that day that they’re grateful for, what problems came up and what they’re looking forward to. As a bedtime ritual, Heidi McBain, a counselor and author in Flower Mound, Texas, follows a routine with her two children that includes “reading, checking in about their day—the good/bad/ugly—and at least one thing they are grateful for from their day. And I often share mine, as well!”

Kids With Gratitude 3

Make gratitude fun.

Making Thankfulness Second Nature

T

by Ronica O’Hara

his Thanksgiving, there’s something to be especially thankful for—gratitude itself. Emerging research shows gratitude to be one of the easiest, most effective ways to kickstart happiness and well-being. “The good news about gratitude is that it is one of the more growable character strengths—and it’s never too late,” says Giacomo Bono, Ph.D., an assistant professor at California State University, in Dominguez Hills, and co-author of Making Grateful Kids: The Science of Building Character. It’s also never too early to “plant” it: Even toddlers love to parrot, “Thank you.” Research by Bono and others shows kids that are grateful are happier, more engaged and studious, and less envious, depressed, materialistic and prone to violence. It can be taught: After one week of daily 30-minute lessons on gratitude, 8- to 11-year-olds wrote thank-you notes for a PTA presentation that were 80 percent longer than notes by kids that didn’t have the lessons. To instill gratefulness in a child:

1

Be grateful and show it.

“Kids are more likely to do something if they see adults around them doing

it,” says Bono. “Being specific with your words helps, too, because it shows what behavior mattered to you and why.” Adds psychologist Mary Jo Podgurski, founder and president of the Academy for Adolescent Health, in Washington, Pennsylvania: “If we express our gratitude by making eye contact, with sincerity and by providing an example of how much we are appreciative, the words are empowered. Telling the grocery clerk, ‘I really like the way you packed my berries on top. Thanks for taking the time to be careful with my purchases,’ will light up the clerk’s face.” That can translate into a child not simply saying, “Thank you” to a grandparent for birthday money, but also explaining how excited they are about the game they plan to buy with it.

2

Enact a small daily ritual.

“It’s also good for families to come up with gratitude rituals,” says Bono. “Everyday conversations about the good things and people we have or encounter in life, and being specific with words, helps young children understand the connection between kindness and feeling grateful better.” For writer Judy Gruen’s family in Los Angeles, this means a morning prayer:

By getting creative, we can make kids’ expressions of gratitude even more enjoyable. Business coach Kristi Andrus, in Denver, says that her family toasts a lot at mealtime, raising their glasses and clinking them. “Our toasts are simple, ‘Today I’m grateful, thankful, or happy to share ________.’ [fill in the blank]. The kids love it and the parents always smile at what the kids bring up.” Charlene Hess, in Eagle Mountain, Utah, a blogger and homeschooling mom to seven kids, has set up a gratitude door with a sticky note added each day from each child. “This really helps the kids become more aware of all the good things in their lives, particularly as time goes on and they have to get more creative with their responses.” “A rampage of appreciation” is what Jeannette Paxia, a motivational speaker and children’s book author in Modesto, California, does with her five children: “We spend 10 minutes walking around and appreciating all we see. My children love it!” In the home of northern New Jersey therapist Shuli Sandler, when one family member shows gratitude to another, a coin is put in a jar. “When it is full, the whole family can go out and do something together, like grab ice cream or something fun—remembering of course to say thank you,” she says.
