M

arch ushers in the newness of spring. This month, with its fresh blooms and crisp breezes, makes everything around us feel more spirited and alive. The bright colors in nature reflect the warmth of this season—pastel blues, vibrant greens and sunlit yellows. The hours stretch longer, and the outdoors beckon to adventurers, beach combers and even spring breakers. This time of year is all the more enticing here in Florida since the weather has not yet reached peak humidity, and there are tons of opportunities to energize our senses, move our bodies, invest in our wellness and absorb that Vitamin D. This month’s issue of Natural Awakenings is all about radiating the beauty of this season, so let’s take a glimpse inside! Our feature article for March is “Thriving on a Plant-Based Diet,” and spring is the ideal time to embrace the health and environmental benefits of this lifestyle. With an abundance of seasonal produce like carrots, apricots, spinach, avocados, fennel and asparagus, it’s both simple and delicious to introduce more fruit- and vegetable-forward meals into your diet. Whether you choose to follow a vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian or flexitarian plan, this article breaks down all the reasons why boosting your intake of these nutrient-dense foods can transform your health and do wonders for the planet. While on the subject of plant-based nutrition, if you are new to this diet and still crave steak-and-potatoes comfort food at the dinner table, this month’s “Conscious Eating” article will show you the basics of creating plant-based versions of classic meaty recipes. By experimenting with diverse textures, ingredients, aromatics and flavor profiles, many vegan chefs can turn even the staunchest of carnivores into produce aficionados—and after reading this article, you just might be able to do the same! A common question that many people have when considering a plant-based lifestyle is, “Will I consume enough protein if I reduce or eliminate meat?” As an answer to this, our “Fit Body” article delves into the concept of vegan fitness and how plant-based athletes fuel their bodies with the right sources of protein to build muscle, sustain exertion and maximize their overall performance. In fact, as this article points out, some of the most recognizable names in sports, like New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and tennis champion Venus Williams, follow a plant-based regimen and confirm it makes them stronger. Well, readers—this is a season of new possibilities, fresh starts and vibrant changes. So, if you feel empowered to make the shift toward a healthier lifestyle, the area of nutrition is an easy place to begin, and this issue is chock-full of ideas for motivation and inspiration. Let us know about the wellness initiatives you’re making, and send us an email at Publisher@NASRQ.com. We are so grateful for your continued feedback and support!

Elysian Fields Offers Oxygen Therapy

E

ven at sea level, oxygen treatments are beneficial. Whether you deal with chronic fatigue, pain, disease or stress, oxygen therapy goes a long way. There is nothing new about this treatment modality. In the 1900s, a form of oxygen therapy called “hyperbaric” was used with divers to remedy decompression illness. It has since become a treatment for strokes, embolisms, crush injuries, diabetic infections and more. In the late ‘90s, oxygen treatments became mainstream. Popular in destination locales and areas of elevation, oxygen bars and lounges are used by athletes and seniors, as well as those seeking relief from specific ailments. Oxygen treatments vary from five to 20 minutes, and in some cases, even an hour. The Oxygen Bar at Elysian Fields offers 10 minutes for $10. As an option, there are also five aromatherapies to choose from, and each aroma has benefits or attributes to enhance the overall therapy. For an uplifting experience that boosts circulation, lemongrass can be infused into the oxygen. Lavender balances the physical and emotional aspects of being, and eucalyptus promotes concentration and assists with respiratory function. Bergamot is ideal for digestion and fights infection, while grapefruit assists in mood balancing, metabolic function, and has both anti-microbial and antibacterial properties. Even if you choose just a basic Oxygen Treatment, you can enjoy relaxation, increased focus and awareness with more energy. While seated in the comfortable chairs at Elysian Fields, you can read a book, listen to a musical or meditative CD through headphones, or sit with your eyes closed. Decreased stress and anxiety are at the top of the list of added benefits, as well as alleviated sinus and headache discomfort. Location: 1273 S Tamiami Trail, Sarasota. For more information, call 941-361-3006 or visit ElysianFieldsOnline.com.

“Consider the Possibility” at Inquire Within Goddess Shoppe

A

re you ready to unplug from paradigms and belief systems and experience yourself as an untethered, sovereign individual? Do you want to feel empowered to follow your inner authority and higher self rather than following a guru or group? Could it be that we are all meant to relate to each other as a collection of individuals and not morph into a collective that dissolves personal boundaries, at least not in this dimension? We all originate from source and might be aware of the Law of One, but we are currently experiencing a reality that requires us to engage our individual free will and make challenging personal choices. Are you ready to question everything humanity has been told about our reality, history, religion, government, healthcare, environment, planet, ascension and magic? Are you open to considering and discussing all possibilities to make personal choices with discernment rather than indoctrination? Then, you are invited to join others who long to do the same. 2020 is the year to see the world with more clarity. Join Inquire Within Goddess Shoppe for our series “Consider the Possibility.” We will meet one Saturday a month, and topics and dates can be found in the calendar section. Our first gathering is scheduled for March 28, 11a.m. to 1 p.m., on the topic of magic. New location: 1653 5th St., Sarasota. Cost: $20. For more information and to RSVP, call 941330-9274 or email Susan@TheGoddessShoppe.net.

Acclaimed Poet Linda Albert Releases New Collection of Works

L

inda Albert has just published a poetry collection titled Charting the Lost Continent: Poetry and Other Discoveries. Her earliest publications date back to the 1960s, when her poems appeared in McCall’s Magazine and The Wall Street Journal. In the decades since, her work has been published internationally and recognized with numerous awards. Now at the age of 82, she considers her most recent book “right on time,” and reviewers agree. New York Times bestselling author Carol Gino says the book is “filled with feminine strength and power—a deep dive into the secret places in Everywoman’s heart,” and author Miriam Pedersen advises, “Read Charting the Lost Continent, knowing you can follow its map to find a way to love this fleeting life.” Albert’s poetry is influenced by her interest in the universal themes, life passages and shifting roles of contemporary humans. “We find ourselves at a point in history where both men and women are not only talking about, but collectively working toward empowerment of feminine principles, self-acceptance and equality. I have always believed poetry has the potential to act as a reflective mirror and catalyst for personal growth and positive societal change. Though progress has been made, I’m glad to participate in the current global movement toward this much needed partnership between all of life,” she explains. Charting the Lost Continent: Poetry and Other Discoveries is available at Amazon, Barnes & Noble or your local bookseller. For more information, visit LindaAlbert.net. 14

Point Luminex Is Now Offering NAD+: The Anti-Aging Molecule

N

AD stands for nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, a coenzyme commonly found in living creatures—especially humans. A coenzyme is needed by the body in order for enzymes in cells to work. It is involved in critical bodily processes and, most importantly, energy metabolism. NAD+ is the cornerstone to maintaining healthy internal organs, brain and nervous system. Adding NAD+ via IV Therapy or IM Injection can “bio-hack” the body into functioning better on a molecular level, and possibly defend against future maladies. NAD+ works by turning nutrients into ATP, the energy currency of each cell. Then, it aligns with the proteins to carry out essential biological processes such as DNA repair, mitochondrial function, chromosomal integrity, gene expression, epigenetic modifications, calcium signaling and post-translational modifications. Some of the proteins that regulate these processes are called “sirtuins” which promote cell health including cellular resistance to stressful conditions and aging. Sirtuins require NAD+ to function. However, NAD+ is reduced and converted to NADH once it transports electrons, so our bodies need to continually synthesize NAD+. Herein lies the dilemma—our bodies produce less and less NAD+ as we age, and that’s where Point Luminex comes in! For more information and to schedule an NAD+ consultation, call 941-217-6828 or visit PointLumineux.com.

Matt Kahn 2020 Awaken Tour Coming to Sarasota

Anti-Aging with Pearl Cream by Dr. Anna Seminar

O

O

n April 17, 7–9 p.m., and April 18, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., best-selling author and highly-attuned empathic healer Matt Kahn will appear at Unity of Sarasota as part of the Awaken 2020 Tour. These powerful group healing events will feature the heart-centered and often hilarious insights, energetic activations and integration practices that have made Kahn one of the most celebrated spiritual teachers of our time. Each gathering will also contain its own unique themes, teachings and frequency channels to uplift the vibration of the city and those in attendance. Join Kahn for one event or take a deeper dive with both. He will be available to sign copies of his latest book The Universe Always Has A Plan following each event. Don’t miss your chance to be part of this living, breathing experience of unconditional love. Livestream access is also available for those who are unable to attend in person.

n March 13, 1 p.m., Dr. Anna Baker, DOM, will present a seminar on Pearl Cream by Dr. Anna, her revolutionary anti-aging serum made from real pearls and Chinese herbs without any preservatives. Pearls contain amino acids that retighten muscles and slowly return the face to its younger look with daily use. These amino acids are sensitive and destroyed by chemical preservatives which is the reason other commercially available pearl creams don’t provide these results. Dr. Anna will show photographed results of people of all different ages. Pearl Cream by Dr. Anna is also available as a muscle tightening body lotion, men’s anti-aging line and sports performance line.

Location: 3023 Proctor Rd., Sarasota. For more information and to obtain tickets, visit MattKahn.org/Events. To access the livestream, visit MattKahn.org/Livestream.

Location: 2721 Mall Dr., Sarasota. Hours: Monday–Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call 941-921-2662 or visit PearlCreamByDrAnna.com. AGE 32

Season for Nonviolence Celebration

T

he Center for Spiritual Living Cultural Coast (CSLCC) invites our community to celebrate the twenty-second annual Season for Nonviolence (SNV). Established in 1998 by Arun Gandhi, Mahatma Gandhi’s grandson, SNV is a celebration of the philosophies and lives of Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. Today, Gandhi co-chairs the SNV with Rev. Michael Bernard Beckwith of Agape International Spiritual Center. The Season for Nonviolence runs until April 4, spanning the memorial anniversaries of these two crusaders for peace. In this spirit, CSLCC welcomes John Stringer on March 8. From Atlanta, Georgia, he travels extensively as a teacher, speaker, billboard charting singer-songwriter, healer, and author with a passion for music. Stringer will be available for private channeled healing sessions, and will perform an intimate evening House Concert. On March 15, Rev. Cindy Grimes of CSL Ocala, Circle-Up Center for Practical Peace Building and River Phoenix Center for Peace Building will offer a preview of their March 28–29 workshop called “Circle-Up for Peace.” Learn how the universal, ancient practice of coming together in circles can be used to foster greater connection, build community, enhance emotional resilience, facilitate personal healing and restore relationships. Continuing to promote local talent, CSLCC will also showcase singer-songwriters Elaine Silver on March 1, Len Seligman on March 15, Mindy Simmons on March 22 and Emily Ross March 29. All Sunday Gatherings start at 11 a.m. in the Sarasota Garden Club. Location: 1131 Blvd. of the Arts, Sarasota. For more information, visit CSLCulturalCoast.org or follow Center of Spiritual Living Cultural Coast on Facebook.

ormation and education about wellness and connection to others can be difficult to sift through. The Spirit University invites you to discover the knowledge to make healthier choices at our fourth annual “Ah-Ha! Holistic Expo” on March 21, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Alternative Health: These series of lectures by will cover different treatments and modalities. Get your questions answered on various alternative health practices such as “How to Prevent Age Related Disease” which is backed by medical science and proven results. Connecting to Nature: We are not separate from the natural world—we are of it. However, we tend to lose sight of the importance of all the wonders and abundance nature gives us. These series of lectures can help reclaim that connection through topics such as “Stepping into the Wisdom of Trees,” among others. Eating for Heath: You are what you eat—these words never rang truer as science has uncovered more about how diet is crucial to a healthy body and mind. Nutritionists and experts will present on topics such as “Herbs and their Benefits to the Body” to help you make informed decisions next time you are at the grocery store. Bodies in Motion: Along with a nutritious diet, health also requires exercise, but this doesn’t have to include a two-hour intense workout each day. Exclusive to Re3 Healing: SaltFacial™ Skin Renewal Therapy

B

ecause skin is our largest organ, taking care of it should be more of a priority than most of us realize. We are blessed with sunshine here in Southwest Florida; however, with that comes the sun’s aging effects, which we all need to combat. Fine lines, hyperpigmentation, melasma, and dull and aging skin are real issues, but Re3 Healing has a solution, and it begins with salt. Acclaimed for centuries for its natural healing properties, sea salt draws out impurities in the skin and balances alkaline levels. The SaltFacial™ exfoliation procedure, which is the first step in our threestep renewal therapy, uses natural sea salt to create smoother, tighter and healthier skin, while preparing it at the cellular level for topical formulations. Step two uses ultrasound technology to safely deliver enriching and hydrating topicals deep into the skin to accelerate healing. The final step then uses LED phototherapy to improve the appearance of pigmented and vascular lesions and promote collagen production naturally. This treatment is safe and effective for all skin types, and it is also effective for acne and rosacea. If you want healthy and radiant skin, this is the ideal treatment to incorporate into your current skincare regimen. Re3 Healing now offers introductory pricing until the end of March. For more information, call 941-893-2688 or visit Re3Healing.com.

Kid Potential: Local Holistic Education for Successful Students

K

id Potential is a fantastic resource for stimulating education. The KP cognitive skills trainers create an atmosphere of love and fun, while offering holistic education that addresses individual needs. KP builds on strengths and raises self-esteem because it’s important to increase confidence so that learners really believe in themselves. Students can overcome learning disabilities such as ADHD/ ADD, dyslexia and speech difficulties, and KP is open to working with people of all ages who want to increase their thinking abilities. KP is one of only 500 providers of the nationally researched programs PACE and Master the Code—dynamic, proven training methods that strengthen underlying brain skills. The goal of PACE and Master the Code is to build brain-based learning skills until students reach or exceed age appropriate levels. Students who complete the program can read, write, and spell, fluently. The results at KP are dramatic, and typically, our students increase their reading level by four years in 60–72 hours of individual instruction. Trainers use a natural and healthy approach to education for both children and adults by using several different methods. For example, one tool used is the metronome, where the aspect of rhythm is used to increase the flow of brainwave activity. Research and our own experience prove that students who feel supported and loved in a fun learning environment tend to demonstrate the highest success rates. KP now offers free cognitive testing as well. Locations: 2477 Stickney Point Road, #303B, Sarasota, and 7345 International Place, #109, Sarasota (Lakewood Ranch). For more information and to schedule an appointment, call 941-966-5654 or 808-7442867.

n March 18, 2 p.m., Dr. Anna Baker, DOM and founder of Faces by Dr. Anna, will present a seminar on her unique muscle tightening acupuncture face and necklift procedure. Muscles lose their tone gradually as a person ages which leads to the face slowly becoming larger and the expression becoming droopier. Dr. Anna’s technique three-dimensionally retightens the muscles over a series of treatments. The eyes become wider, cheeks become higher, jawlines become firmer, lips become fuller and all the details of a younger face return. Dr. Anna has a database of over 700 people, and she will show photographed results on people of various ages. A nationally board-certified Doctor of Oriental Medicine, Dr. Anna has been practicing in Sarasota since 1998. She has developed her specialty in a muscle tightening acupuncture face and necklift which is unique in that no needles are used on the face. Up to three treatments can be done in one day with a 10-treatment minimum. After treatments are completed, a one or two treatment touch-up is suggested every 18 months to maintain the lift. Dr. Anna’s work has been nationally televised, and she has been voted Sarasota’s favorite anti-aging practitioner. Location: 2721 Mall Dr., Sarasota. For more information and to make seminar reservations, call 941-921-2662. To view before-and-after photos, visit FacesByDrAnna.com. If you cannot attend the seminar, Dr. Anna also offers free consultations.

Yoga Therapy Is Effective for Mental Health

A

ccording to the Global Burden of Disease report, from 1990 to 2017, anxiety disorder doubled from 20% to over 40% in the U.S. The World Health Organization notes that unrecognized mental disorders account for more disabilities than all other illnesses, but few people recognize and seek help for mental health until symptoms are chronic and severe. Lifetime rates for mental illness in the U.S. are at 50%—one in four people have one or more episodes, and incidences increase with age. Chronic mental stress is now correlated to physical disease breakdown, as well as dementia and Alzheimer’s risk. Much is discussed about depression, but twice as many people live with the stress of untreated anxiety disorder. This data indicates that mental disorders are so common that they need to become an essential focus of global health. Medications and psychotherapy are the prevailing treatments. However, the integrated holistic treatment of yoga therapy for balancing the mind and body, an ancient prescription for centuries, has been found effective by numerous studies in combination with psychiatric treatments—or for milder cases, alone. How can yoga therapy help the more than 970 million people globally with clinical anxiety disorder, and the other 792 million living mental disorders such as depression, bipolar, OCD, PTSD, eating disorders, substance abuse or schizophrenia? The National Institute of Health reports that yoga therapy can help those with disordered psychological reactions in five specific ways: • • • • •

Induces deep rest and a calming effect on stress reflexes in the body and mind. Increases awareness of the physical symptoms when mental imbalance begins. Bolsters the attention span and ability to concentrate, so function and control improves. Enhances acceptance and adaptability in order to choose healthier lifestyle habits. Provides the skills to develop a sense of safety and stability, not dependent on others or favorable events.

Only 10 states in the U.S. require healthcare professionals to have mental health training. It’s time to find a yoga therapist and start the journey to balance. Empowered 2 Wellness Yoga Therapy of Sarasota provides free consultations by appointment and private sessions. Location: 1219 East Ave., Ste. 104, Sarasota. For more information, call 941-316-6893.

Meditation and Neurofeedback By Gregg Sledziewski and Heather Boreske editation is a non-invasive approach to bring the mind back in balance with the body and spirit. Tons of scientific research has been released in regards to the many benefits of meditation. Some of those benefits are: increased immune function, regulates mood and anxiety disorders, decreases depression and thoughts of hopelessness, reduces symptoms of panic disorders, helps reduce alcohol and substance abuse, improves decision making skills and resilience, & helps manage ADHD. Often times, people give up too soon when trying meditation because they cannot get the mind to calm down. The idea of meditation is not to calm the mind, it is to be aware of what the mind is doing. The more aware we are, the more we can “see” the nature of the mind and use the tools of the breath and body to ease the mind, which in turn decreases anxiety and frustration. When we come to this place, we often hear this called rest and digest, our parasympathetic nervous system can rest and we allow the body to come of out of fight or flight, or the sympathetic nervous system. It is in this place of ease that true healing begins. The advantage of adding neuroscience to mindfulness and meditation techniques is that mental training can be accomplished in a shorter time, working directly with the brain’s inherent neuroplasticity. Our neurofeedback training acts as a mental compass, showing the way into states that can be difficult to reach without guidance. After some practice, you can get there on your own. Presently, The Brain Wave Center has partnered with Nurturing Sol Healing Arts exploring different types of meditation to help ease your nervous system and bring your awareness back to the body and breath. Participants may choose to utilize neurofeedback training in conjunction with meditation or practice meditation alone. Our next class is scheduled for March 18, 2020 and more information can be found in the Calendar of Events section.

Special Nutrition Levels Up Its Gluten-Free Game by Mary-Elizabeth Schurrer

I

n January 2020, a certain gluten-free bakery—the only one of its kind here in Sarasota—closed its doors on Stickney Point Road after 14 years in business. While this was likely a source of disappointment for the Sarasota residents who frequented this bakery, it was the start of a new campaign for Louise Mastro, the owner of Special Nutrition. Located next-door to the former bakery, Mastro had long partnered with its staff to provide her own customers with gluten-free breads, pastries and desserts. So she embarked on a round-the-clock mission to find a new bakery replacement— one that offered scratch made gluten-free products with the use of only vegan and natural ingredients in a dedicated environment without any cross-contamination from allergens such as nuts and soy. This tireless search introduced Mastro to HaleLife Bakery, a local establishment in St. Petersburg which is unique to Southwest Florida in that no cross-con22

tamination whatsoever can be found there. HaleLife’s owner Laura McCutcheon and her son Taylor were both diagnosed with celiac disease within just a year of each other—2009 and 2008, respectively. Fueled by the desire and inspiration to serve her area’s celiac and gluten-free community who, like her son and herself, cannot digest a normal slice of wheat bread from the supermarket, McCutcheon opened HaleLife in 2017. Now three years later, this gluten-free bakery has the attention of Mastro and her customers. In fact, within just the first week of offering HaleLife products at Special Nutrition, the entire selection was sold-out. This is further proof that Sarasota residents appreciate Mastro’s commitment to only partner with businesses who care about health and prioritize both the quality and safety of ingredients over the sheer convenience of mass-production. The vegan, scratch made, natural and allergysafe treats from this dedicated gluten-free

bakery have earned a seal of approval from Special Nutrition’s three on-staff nutritional consultants too. In addition to these new items in the store, the aisles of Special Nutrition continue to be stocked with an immense, diverse assortment of health foods, supplements and vitamins from the most reputable brands in the wellness industry. The prices are lower than customers will find at any similar establishment in Sarasota, as Mastro and her team always match the price if an item has been marked less expensive somewhere else. Finally, true to the name “Special” Nutrition, if a certain product or brand cannot be found in store, then a staff member is more than willing to special order it for the customer and ship it anywhere in the continental United States. More than 19 years ago, Mastro created her business on the foundation of special orders which has remained a core tenet ever since. So whether those who visit Special Nutrition are in need of a supplement or in the mood for a gluten-free cupcake, one fact is certain—they came to the right place indeed. Special Nutrition is located at 1882 Stickney Point Rd., Sarasota. The store hours are Monday–Saturday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, visit SpecialNutrition.net.

Keto Crazy! by Christina Captain, DAOM, MSAOM, MSHN, MA

T

he “keto craze” seems to be on everyone’s radar these days. Keto dieting is touted to be a cure for elevated cholesterol, cancer, Type2 diabetes, menopausal symptoms and a host of other ailments. Bear in mind, the ketogenic diet is not new to medicine. Drug resistant epilepsy in children has been treated with the ketogenic diet for almost 100 years. The ketogenic diet is defined as a meal plan with a low carbohydrate, moderate protein and higher fat focus. In theory, following a ketogenic diet helps the body utilize fat as a source of energy rather than glucose (sugar) from carbohydrates. When there are not enough carbohydrates in the body as a source of energy, the body turns to fat, and this stage is called ketosis. Being in ketosis is essentially where the health benefits occur. Most individuals utilize the ketogenic diet for accelerating weight loss; however, there are contraindications in certain disease groups. For example, patients with kidney disease should be cautious, as this kind of diet might worsen their condition. Both Type-1 and Type-2 diabetics, who are insulin dependent are also at risk for hypoglycemia during ketosis. In addition, a ketogenic diet can exacerbate kidney stones in individuals who are susceptible. If you fall into any of these categories, or are medically fragile, please discuss any plans to start a ketogenic diet with your primary care physician. I absolutely agree with and support those who use the ketogenic diet to improve health, but I am concerned about individuals who primarily focus on losing weight and decreasing cholesterol numbers. These, in my opinion, are not the only metrics to be cognizant of. Markers of inflammation (the cause of all disease) and pH balance have an even greater importance in creating health and preventing disease. I believe the keto diet is flawed because the standard Ameri-

can keto diet tends to consist of dairy products, like cheese and butter, and proteins, like bacon, beef, sausage, nuts, more cheese and more bacon. This type of keto diet—despite its success in weight loss and lowering cholesterol markers in blood—creates an inflamed and acidic environment. This is the type of environment responsible for disease. Personally, I find that most keto “newbies,” who are usually on their own, do not incorporate enough greens or plants in general. More focus on plants as food creates a balanced and alkaline environment. Bodies that are less inflamed and more alkaline will age slower, have less pain and be less likely to have mutations at the cellular level (possible cancers). The keto alkaline/green diet incorporates plants, healthier fats and proteins to achieve ketosis in a less inflamed and less acidic environment. For example, instead of the bacon and cottage cheese diet, the more optimal choice would be a Dijon crusted salmon with broccoli sautéed in olive oil and cauliflower rice for a side. The keto green diet is all about healthy plant options, while maintaining higher fat intake within each meal. No matter your reason for starting the ketogenic diet, be sure to choose wisely and add more plants than other foods to your plan. This will likely ensure that your health span equals your life span—and that you might remain healthful until you die. Remember to find help from professional sources because the information you will receive far surpasses what you will find on a Google search, and that dear reader, is priceless. Practice Yoga to Help the Brain It’s long been known that vigorous, sweaty aerobics strengthen the brain and help grow new neurons, but the latest research from the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign shows that practicing gentle hatha yoga enhances many of those same brain structures and functions. The analysis, published in Brain Plasticity, examined 11 studies that used brain-imaging techniques to evaluate outcomes of hatha yoga, which involves body movements, meditation and breathing exercises. The researchers concluded that the hippocampus, which is involved in memory processing and typically shrinks with age, increased in volume with yoga. The amygdala, which helps regulate emotions, tends to be larger in yoga practitioners. Other brain regions that are larger or more efficient in enthusiasts are the prefrontal cortex, essential to planning and decision-making; the default mode network, involved in planning and memory; and the cingulate cortex, which plays a key role in emotional regulation, learning and memory. 24

Researchers from Beijing Geriatric Hospital, in a meta-analysis of 12 studies involving 47,523 patients with cardiovascular disease, found that those that supplemented with folic acid (vitamin B9) reduced their risk of stroke by 15 percent. Folic acid, which the study authors called a “safe and inexpensive therapy,” lowers levels of homocysteine, an amino acid linked to heart disease; research indicates that 0.5 to 5 milligrams daily can reduce homocysteine levels by approximately 25 percent.

Drinking either not enough or too much water can decrease cognitive performance in older women, Penn State University researchers reported in the European Journal of Nutrition. In a nationwide study, 1,271 women and 1,235 men over age 60 gave blood samples, answered questionnaires about the previous day’s food and drinks, and performed cognitive tests to measure working memory, brain processing speed and sustained attention. Women, but not men, performed more poorly if they were not in the “sweet spot” of just enough hydration, typically around two liters a day. “As we age, our water reserves decline due to reductions in muscle mass, our kidneys become less effective at retaining water and hormonal signals that trigger thirst and motivate water intake become blunted,” explains lead author Hilary Bethancourt, in urging greater attention to hydration levels.

Catch Some Rays to Boost Gut Health Fresh evidence is emerging of a skin-gut axis that links type B ultraviolet (UVB) exposure to the microbiome, a finding that has implications for those suffering from autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. University of British Columbia researchers divided 21 healthy young women into two groups: Nine took vitamin D supplements during Vancouver’s long, dark winter, and 12 didn’t. After three months, only the non-supplement-takers tested as being deficient in vitamin D. Both groups were exposed to three, one-minute, fullbody UVB light sessions; within a week, vitamin D levels increased 10 percent on average and the gut microbiota diversity of the low-D group rose to match that of the sufficient-D group. Along with other probiotic bacteria, Lachnospiraceae species, typically low in the guts of people with inflammatory diseases, increased with the UVB exposure.

Cut Back on Sugar and Carbs to Improve Sleep Women that toss and turn at night might sleep better if they pass up sugary treats for fruit, suggests a new study from Columbia University. Examining records of nearly 50,000 postmenopausal women in the Women’s Health Initiative, researchers found those that consumed a diet high in refined carbohydrates—particularly added sugars and processed grains—were more likely to develop insomnia. Women with a diet that included higher amounts of vegetables, fiber and whole fruit (not juice) were less likely to have trouble sleeping. “When blood sugar is raised quickly, your body reacts by releasing insulin, and the resulting drop in blood sugar can lead to the release of hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol, which can interfere with sleep,” explains senior author James Gangwisch, Ph.D.

It’s not a diet or a fad; it’s a way of life.

THE ROOTS OF GOOD HEALTH Thriving on a Plant-Based Diet W

by April Thompson

hether identifying as vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian, flexitarian or other veggie-friendly variant, a growing number of Americans are moving away from meat products and toward plant-rich foods. Most come to a plant-based diet for personal, planetary or animal welfare reasons; however, they stay for the flavorful foods they discover along their dietary journey and the health benefits they reap. Marly McMillen-Beelman was prescribed medications to alleviate symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. “I knew I didn’t want to be on prescriptions, so I decided to change my diet, beginning by giving up meat, dairy and eggs. I immediately felt much better and my symptoms went away naturally,” says the Kansas 26

Sarasota/Manatee Edition

City, Missouri, author of The Everything Vegan Meal Prep Cookbook and founder of Chopped Academy, an online resource for food bloggers. “Now I eat an even greater variety of food than I did before I went vegan.” While only 3 percent of Americans identified as vegan and 5 percent as vegetarian in a recent Gallup Poll, a 2018 report by restaurant consultants Baum + Whiteman indicates that about 83 percent are eating more plant-based foods. Embarking on a plant-based diet is a lifelong adventure, but it can take time to adjust. Experts recommend a healthy dose of self-love with the newfound fondness for fruits and veggies. “Give yourself some slack and realize that dietary changes do not happen overnight,” says

April Murray, a registered dietician in Costa Mesa, California. “Start with familiar plant-based foods you already enjoy, and ease into trying new foods, whether tempeh or lentils.” A plant-oriented diet also can be flexible; health advocates encourage individuals to find a diet that works for them and their families. Leah Webb, the Asheville, North Carolina, author of Simple and Delicious Recipes for Cooking with Whole Foods on a Restrictive Diet, has adapted her diet over time to accommodate her family’s health needs. Although Webb has always maintained a plant-rich diet, she began incorporating some animal products when her son was born. “He had severe food allergies and asthma, and needed a more diverse

diet,” explains Webb, whose daughter also has cystic fibrosis. Cutting out grains was a game-changer in “calming down his gut, where most of immune response lies,” says Webb. “He is now off asthma medication and the number of allergens he suffers from has dropped from seven to two.” Webb’s family eats bountifully from their backyard garden, complemented by meat and produce from local farmers’ markets, where she can be certain the foods were produced sustainably and humanely. “I use meat to flavor soups or accent vegetables, rather than as the star of the show. I like to focus on real flavors, using lots of garlic, herbs and spices,” says Webb. Murray, author of The Everything Pegan Diet Cookbook: 300 Recipes for Starting—and Maintaining—the Pegan Diet, follows that diet, a mash-up of paleo and vegan regimens that focuses on whole, fresh and sustainable food high in healthy fats and vitamins. The Pegan diet eschews refined sugar and highly processed foods, while allowing meat, poultry, fish and eggs, as well as gluten-free grains, legumes and dairy products in small amounts.

Start with familiar plant-based foods you already enjoy, and ease into trying new foods, whether tempeh or lentils. ~April Murray “This diet can be helpful to different people in so many ways,” says Murray. “For people with diabetes and blood sugar dysregulation, this high-fiber diet can help lower blood sugar and insulin levels. Heart health will improve, as you’ll be eating less animal products, which can be high in cholesterol and saturated fat. Many individuals also find themselves losing unwanted weight as they get filled up so quickly with these whole foods.”

Plant-Based Nutrition Made Easy

While some worry about getting sufficient nutrients on a largely plant-based diet, nutrition experts say these fears are unfounded. “People think they need to calculate every nutrient, but if you eat a plant-centered,

whole-foods diet, you will get every vitamin and mineral you need to thrive,” says Ocean Robbins, co-founder of the Food Revolution Network and author of The 31-Day Food Revolution: Heal Your Body, Feel Great, and Transform Your World. Legumes, nuts and seeds are all healthy, abundant sources of protein and iron. Reed Mangels, author of Your Complete Vegan Pregnancy: Your All-in-One Guide to a Healthy, Holistic, Plant-Based Pregnancy, busts the myth that cow’s milk is a must for growing bones. “Calcium, vitamin D and protein are the nutrients we usually associate with bone health. One easy way to get all three is a soy-based or pea protein-based plant milk that is fortified with calcium and vitamin D,” says Mangels, adding that green vegetables like kale, bok choy, collards and broccoli are great sources of calcium. “‘Eating the rainbow’ is great way to make sure you’re consuming a variety of nutrients,” offers London-based Ben Pook, who co-authored the cookbook So Vegan in 5 with his partner Roxy Pope. “Many vitamins, minerals and antioxidants bring their own distinctive colors to fruits and vegetables, so preparing colorful meals is

a simple way of getting as many nutrients into your diet as possible.”

Getting Social

Dietary changes can be challenging to navigate initially, particularly when faced with social situations ranging from family gatherings to cohabitation. Having a good plan going into such situations can help ease the transition, say experts. “Never show up to an event hungry. You will be more likely to make a good decision if you are nourished. On the way there, remind yourself why you are making the transition to plant-based eating,” suggests Murray. “I call myself a secular vegan because I don’t have a dogmatic approach to the way I eat. If I go to a family dinner and someone has made something special for me, but they used a non-vegan cheese, I will respect my family member’s effort and eat some of it. These situations will pop up from time to time, and the more you can be compassionate with yourself, the better,” says McMillen-Beelman. “If you are living with people who are

Make it a shared learning journey rather than a power struggle,” says Robbins. For example, he suggests making a vegetarian base and allowing those that want animal products to add them as toppings. A burrito bar can accommodate all diets by allowing people to add their own fixings to a base of beans and tortillas, whether those be dairy options like cheese and sour cream or veganfriendly guacamole and salsa. For families with kids, being flexible and inclusive can help make changes feel more positive and sustainable. “We never eat processed foods at home, but parties are that time I tell my kids they can eat

whatever they want,” says Webb. “Get your children involved, so that they are more engaged in the eating experience. Let your children pick out recipes or snacks for the week. Make the food look pretty and it will taste more satisfying,” adds Murray.

Plant Prep Made Easy

Plant-based chefs have plenty of kitchen hacks for making food prep and planning fun and easy. Robbins suggests finding go-to recipes to put on repeat. “Your prep time goes down a lot as you make the same dish, and the familiarity will help you develop lasting habits around new food patterns,” he says. Webb incorporates a healthy protein, fat and vegetable into every meal, even breakfast, but cooks in batches and freezes portions or repurposes leftovers to simplify mealtimes. “You’ll get burned out if you try to cook something from scratch every meal,” says Webb. “We eat a lot of eggs because we raise chickens, so I’ll do baked frittatas I can reheat during the week.” Advance meal prep can take the pressure off busy times like the weekday breakfast rush, adds Robbins. One of his favorite breakfasts involves soaking oats and chia seeds overnight, which he tops in the morning with some unsweetened soy or coconut milk, chopped banana, frozen blueberries, and a dash of maple syrup, vanilla and nutmeg. “It’s full of omega-3 fatty acids, protein, antioxidants and phytonutrients,” he says. Webb encourages people to get out of their food comfort zones by experimenting with approximate ingredients, like swapping kabocha or honeynut squash for butternut squash. Robbins also suggests making social connections with others on the same path by cooking them a meal, organizing a meal swap or sharing extras. “It’s not a diet or a fad; it’s a way of life. Start where you are and remember it’s not about perfection, it’s about progress. Have love, dignity and compassion toward yourself and others along the journey,” he says. Are Your Teeth Making You Sick? by Martina Mallery, DDS

iological and holistic dentistry seeks to heal diseases that plague the oral cavity, and emergent science confirms that any disease of the mouth has systemic ramifications. To complicate the issue further, some mainstream dental procedures and materials are toxic for the body, and can lead to degenerative disease. Among the toxic materials routinely used in dentistry is fluoride, a hormone disruptor, carcinogen and neurotoxin. The therapeutic effects of fluoride in tooth decay prevention are marginal at best, but toxicity of fluoride cannot be understated. A quick trip to International Academy of Biological Dentistry and Medicine website will help you navigate scientific studies which confirm the far-reaching toxicity of fluoride. Another material often handled incorrectly is mercury. Dental amalgam fillings are 50% mercury which off-gasses continually. As a result, mercury also passes through the epithelial cells of oral mucosa to contaminate the brain and other nearby anatomical structures. Neurological dysfunctions that range from anxiety and depression, all the way to devastating Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, top an extensive list of serious health issues associated with chronic mercury exposure. In fact, no organ system is spared when mercury bioaccumulates in the liver, gastroin-

testinal tract, lungs and kidneys. There are also pathogens like Epstein Bar or Lyme that can thrive in the presence of heavy metal. Other metal alloys used in dentistry, such as crowns, prosthetic framework or titanium implants, also have neurotoxic effects which undermine the immune system. The root cause of many chronic autoimmune conditions can be traced to heavy metal toxicity as well. Some dental procedures also wreak havoc on the human body. One such example is root canal therapy which is performed when a tooth is dead or abscessed. The root canal system is cleansed and sealed, and the tooth is restored to its function. However, as it turns out, the root canal system is so complex that no matter how meticulous the dentist is, bacteria is left behind, and a chronic infection persists. This drives the immune system into a perpetual state of emergency as bacterial toxins are circulated around the body. Fibromyalgia, arthritis or multiple sclerosis are just a few examples of autoimmune disease connected to a presence of dead teeth. Furthermore, the presence of dead teeth has also been linked to cancer as the immune system has been completely overwhelmed with a persistent infection. Another problem is an incomplete tooth extraction. Unfortunately, dental schools do not teach the correct way to extract teeth.

There is an important additional step, without which the bone cannot fully regenerate, and the absence of this step results in so-called NICO lesions. NICO stands for neuralgia-inducing cavitational osteonecrosis of jaw bone. This step is the removal of fibrous tissue called periodontal ligament. If this ligament is left in place, it acts as a barrier to bone cells and blood supply, resulting in chronic infection of that unhealed site. The immune system is again poised for a failure in its futile attempt to overcome the infection. Autoimmunity and cancer are often the unfortunate outcomes. In fact, cancer and autoimmune disease treatment should be initiated by performing biological dental revision first and foremost. Any practitioner who omits this critical step will waste their patients’ resources and precious time, as the root cause is not being identified nor addressed. Biological dental revision begins with removal of metal from the oral cavity. A typical biological dentist is certified by International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology to remove mercury and metal alloy safely under a strict set of guidelines. The next step is to remove all dead and abscessed teeth, as well as those previously treated with root-canal therapy. Stripping the extraction socket of the periodontal ligament is a must. The use of ozone gas and plateletrich fibrinogen (PRF) that is harvested from patient’s blood is also quickly becoming a standard of care in biological dental surgery. Ozone gas disinfects the surgical site and stimulates the immune system and oxygen metabolism. PRF helps regenerate bone due to its high content of stem cells, growth factors and infection-fighting leukocytes. Finally, the areas of chronic NICO lesions must also be surgically revised. And likewise, ozone gas and PRF should be utilized to help the jaw bone finally regenerate. Biological dental revision protocol is multi-faceted, so this only scratches the surface. However, once this critical step is accomplished, the treating physician, such as an oncologist or alternative physician, is more equipped for the likelihood of a successful treatment. White Sands Dentistry is a holistic and biological dental practice, located at 520 48th Street Ct. E, Bradenton. Meatless Makeover A Plant-Based Spin on Classic Dishes

W

by April Thompson

hen contemplating a shift toward a plant-based diet, some may prematurely mourn the loss of their favorite meaty classics. Luckily, enterprising vegan chefs have experimented with flavors and textures that will lure almost any palate into loving a plant-based version of their favorite dishes without resorting to processed foods. “Plant-based versions of classic dishes offer all the nutritional benefits of plants without the cholesterol and saturated fats from animal products,” says chef and author Marly McMillen-Beelman. “You don’t have to abandon all your favorite foods to become vegan—just veganize them.” The Kansas City chef makes carrot “dogs”, for example, by roasting carrots in a savory mix of tamari, agave, miso, paprika and garlic for a cookout-worthy treat. McMillen-Beelman’s cookbook The Everything Vegan Meal Prep Cookbook also offers many bean- and legume-based versions of classic sandwiches, like a vegan “Big Mac” with quinoa and pinto beans; a burger made from oats, black beans and pecans; meatballs from tofu and lentils; and a chicken salad based on tempeh, a

fermented, soy-based, high-protein product with a nutty flavor. “A lot of people like using tempeh, tofu or jackfruit for a meaty texture. It needs to be well seasoned, but so does meat,” suggests Ocean Robbins, author of The 31-Day Food Revolution: Heal Your Body, Feel Great, & Transform Your World. “To mimic cheese, some combination of nuts and nutritional yeast, cultured nut cheeses or plant-based milks works nicely.” McMillen-Beelman likes using jackfruit for a “pulled pork” sandwich or taco, the tropical fruit being packed with vitamin C, protein, calcium, potassium and iron. Her slow-cooked version leans on whole-food ingredients, including pear and cranberries, to add natural sweetness and phytonutrients. “I use canned jackfruit because it’s much easier to find and cook with than the expensive jumbo whole fruit,” she says. Ben Pook, the London co-author with Roxy Pope of So Vegan in 5, says mushrooms lend substance and umami flavor to vegan dishes such as a mushroom, sage and onion Wellington as a

substitute for the classic beef Wellington. “We use portobello mushrooms for their meaty texture, which we surround with a sage and onion stuffing—all wrapped in vegan puff pastry to create a centerpiece worthy of any dinner party,” says Pook, whose cookbook features dozens of plant-based recipes that contain only five ingredients each, such as a broccoli alfredo with cashews, broccolini, tagliatelle pasta, nutritional yeast and garlic. Nuts can also work wonders in a vegetarian dish, such as Pook and Pope’s walnut meat tacos, which blend toasted walnuts together with spices like cumin, paprika, garlic and chili powder to create a mince-like texture built into a taco with toppings galore. Many classic dishes can also be adapted by simply leaving out the meat and letting the spices, herbs and vegetables shine through; for example, in a vegan shepherd’s pie, go with penne pasta with red sauce or a garlicky pesto with extra nuts, greens and olive oil in lieu of cheese. Sweet tooth cravings can be satisfied with healthy, plant-based versions of classic desserts, substituting aquafaba (the starchy liquid left over from canned beans) instead of frothy egg whites, or olive oil or avocado for butter. Nut butters can also add a touch of richness to a dish, whether sweet or savory. “I love making a peanut coconut milk curry soup with onions, mushrooms and bok choy, with peanut butter, lime juice and soy sauce blended into the coconut milk for a luxurious flavor and texture. It’s great over potatoes, quinoa or rice,” says Robbins. “Vegan food doesn’t need to be expensive, boring or complicated,” Pook says. “There really are endless possibilities when it comes to cooking with plants, so don’t be afraid to experiment and create your own twist.” Connect with Washington, D.C.-based freelance writer April Thompson at AprilWrites.com.

Combine the plant-based milk and apple cider vinegar in a separate bowl. Let sit for a minute or two until the milk curdles and turns into a “buttermilk”. Then add the hot sauce and mix everything together until the ingredients are well combined. Set aside. Meanwhile, add the flour to a small plate and set aside. Press the tofu if required. (Extra-firm tofu contains very little moisture, so this step isn’t always necessary.) Then slice the block in half and break the tofu into bite-sized pieces with hands.

Vegan Popcorn ‘Chicken’ Yields: 4 to 6 servings 10.5 oz extra-firm tofu Sea salt and pepper ½ cup flour Vegetable oil Dry ingredients: 3.5 oz paprika-flavored chips 4 Tbsp flour 2 tsp dried oregano 1 tsp smoked paprika ½ tsp onion powder ½ tsp garlic powder Wet ingredients: ½ cup plant-based milk ½ Tbsp apple cider vinegar 2 Tbsp hot sauce To serve: Tomato ketchup Vegan mayonnaise Crush the paprika crisps between a clean tea towel using a rolling pin until no big pieces remain. Transfer to a bowl along with the remaining dry ingredients and a pinch of salt and pepper. Use a spoon to mix everything together, then set aside.

Season the tofu on both sides with salt and pepper; dip tofu into the flour, followed by the milk mixture, then the crisp mixture. Repeat until all the tofu pieces have been coated. Add the vegetable oil to a pan until it’s ¼-inch deep. Tip: Use a wok to reduce the amount of oil needed. Heat the oil on medium-high. Drop a tiny amount of the dry mixture; if it starts sizzling as soon as it hits the oil, it’s ready. Carefully add half a dozen or so tofu pieces to the hot oil and fry for about 2 minutes on each side or until the tofu begins to brown and is extra crispy. It’s important to not overcrowd the pan, as it can lower the temperature of the oil. When the tofu is ready, carefully remove it from the pan and transfer it to a plate lined with parchment paper; immediately season it with some extra salt, which will help make it even crispier. Repeat until all the tofu pieces are cooked. Serve with a favorite dip, such as one made by combining equal amounts of tomato ketchup and vegan mayo. Walnut Meat Tacos Yields: 4 servings Walnut meat: 14 oz walnuts 1 Tbsp smoked paprika 2 tsp chili powder 1½ Tbsp ground cumin 3 garlic cloves 2 tsp balsamic vinegar 2 tsp maple syrup 2.5 oz sun-dried tomatoes in oil Sea salt Black bean mixture: 9 oz canned sweet corn 14 oz canned black beans Sea salt and pepper ½ lime Handful of fresh cilantro Salsa: 9 oz cherry tomatoes 1 green chili 1 red onion 1 lime Handful of fresh cilantro Sea salt and pepper To serve: 2 avocados ½ lime 8-10 small corn tortillas Vegan yogurt Toast the walnuts in a pan over a medium heat for 6-8 minutes or until they begin to smoke. Keep an eye on them and stir occasionally to prevent them burning. Then peel and dice the garlic and add it to the walnuts along with the smoked paprika, chili powder and ground cumin. Stir to coat the walnuts in the spices, then cook for 2 minutes. Meanwhile, drain and rinse the black beans and sweet corn. Transfer them to a separate pan and stir in a generous pinch of salt and pepper, as well as the juice from the lime. Heat through for 5 minutes on a medium heat. Remove the pan from the heat, roughly chop the cilantro and stir it into the beans and sweet corn. March 2020

Add the cooked walnuts, garlic and spices to a food processor along with the balsamic vinegar, maple syrup, sun-dried tomatoes (drain as much oil as possible) and a pinch of salt. Process for a minute or two until the walnut mixture turns into a mince-like texture. Next, prepare the salsa by slicing the cherry tomatoes into quarters and transfer them to a mixing bowl. Peel and dice the red onion, slice the chili (leave the seeds in if spicy is preferred) and roughly chop the cilantro leaves, adding all to the mixing bowl. Squeeze the juice from the lime into the bowl, along with a generous pinch of salt and pepper, then stir to combine. Meanwhile, heat through the tortillas in a pan over a low-medium heat. Slice the avocado in half and remove the

pit. Scoop out the flesh and mash it in a bowl along with juice from half a lime. When you’re ready to assemble your tacos, spoon a few tablespoons of the walnut mixture on top of a tortilla, followed by the bean mixture, salsa and a dollop of mashed avocado. Top with a drizzle of vegan yogurt. Repeat for the remaining tacos. Adapted from So Vegan in 5 by Roxy Pope and Ben Pook.

Yields: 4 servings 8 Portobello mushrooms 3 onions 10 sage leaves 4.2 oz walnuts 2 (11 oz) sheets of dairy-free puff pastry Preheat oven to 425° F and line a large baking tray with baking paper. Wipe any excess dirt off the mushrooms and place five of them in an ovenproof dish. Drizzle with olive oil and season with sea salt and pepper, then bake for 15 minutes. Remove the mushrooms from the oven and set aside, leaving the oven switched on for later. Meanwhile, quarter the remaining mushrooms; peel and roughly chop the onions and add to a food processor along with sage leaves, walnuts, ½ teaspoon of salt and 1 teaspoon of pepper. Process to form a smooth paste, then fry in a pan over a medium-high heat for 15 minutes, stirring frequently. Set aside to cool for 10 minutes. Roll out one sheet of pastry onto the lined baking tray. Spread a third of the paste down the middle of the pastry lengthways, spreading it 2 inches wide and leaving the same length clear at each end. Turn the baked mushrooms upside-down to drain excess juices, then place three of the mushrooms, gills facing up, on top of the paste along the middle of the pastry. Add the remaining two mushrooms, gills facing down, between the three mushrooms. Spoon the remaining paste around the mushrooms to cover them on all sides. Place the second sheet of pastry on top and use your fingers to seal the edges together. Trim around the Wellington roughly one inch away from the filling, discarding the excess pastry as you go. Lightly score the Wellington with diagonal lines at 1-inch intervals and brush with olive oil. Bake in the oven for 50 minutes, until the pastry turns a lovely golden brown. Remove from the oven and serve in slices. Adapted from So Vegan in 5 by Roxy Pope and Ben Pook.

VEGAN FITNESS A Healthy Choice for Body and Planet by Marlaina Donato

T

ennis champion Venus Williams and New England Patriots star quarterback Tom Brady are among the athletes that opt for healthy, plantdominant diets to reach their personal best, a trend that belies some misconceptions about what it means to be vegan. “Going vegan implies a larger, lifestyle choice based on personal ethics, but athletes report that they just feel better,” says Brenda Carey, editor-in-chief of Vegan Health and Fitness Magazine. “They’re also surprised at how well they put on muscle after making this dietary change.” A balanced vegan diet can provide

everything an active body needs for muscle mass, stamina and recovery while lowering the risk of heart disease. A 2018 metaanalysis of 40 studies published in the peerreviewed journal PLOS One concludes that a plant-powered diet fosters a healthier cardio-metabolic profile. According to Dutch researchers, amping up nutrition from plants may also lower the risk of insulin resistance and Type 2 diabetes. Devotees report unexpected perks. “I recover faster. I also have more natural energy without the need for caffeine and reduced inflammation, as confirmed in blood tests,” says Matt Tullman, manag-

Bolstering the diet with foods like quinoa, chia seeds, nut butters and vegan energy powders, as well as combining foods for a more complete protein profile, is important. For example, pairing whole-grain rice with beans makes a complete protein, says Stefanie Moir, international vegan fitness coach and founder of VeganAesthetics. co.uk, in Glasgow, Scotland. “Eating a wide variety of foods across the plant kingdom ensures that you reach your fitness goals,” says Moir, who trains six days a week and opts for a breakfast of oats with nut butter and chia seeds. “If you want a ‘superfood’ component, you can add cacao powder for antioxidants and a great chocolate taste.” Tullman acknowledges that there are some exceptions to protein requirements— especially for the elderly, individuals with certain chronic diseases and pregnant women—but he notes that daily protein needs are less than we’ve been conditioned to believe. “If you track your macronutrients through a day, you’ll find that you’re getting adequate protein.” Professional bodybuilder Torre Washington, in Tamarac, Florida, keeps it simple. “We’re all unique individuals, so it’s up to each person to test things without fear of lack.” The National Academy of Sports Medicine-certified coach loves antioxidant-rich blueberries, filling apples and potassium-packed bananas,

~Torre Washington and tends to choose calorically lower, nutritionally dense foods during periods that he’s competing. Carey suggests vegan meal delivery services as an option and vegan-friendly restaurants in a pinch, but attests to an easy system of meal prep for consistency. “Some people like to meal prep one day a week— cooking brown rice, quinoa and chopping veggies. This way, you can just throw it together when it’s time to eat,” she says. “You can also eat more simply and throw a bunch of yummy fruits or veggies into the blender for smoothies or soups.” For added fortification, some experts recommend supplementing with vegan sources of vitamin B12, especially for active women in their child-bearing years and older individuals, because B12 absorption is compromised as we age. Adding a vegan source of vitamin D is also a wise choice if exposure to natural sunlight is not adequate.

The Big Picture

For the vegan athlete, workout gear that doesn’t contain wool or leather is the way to go. “Making conscious choices expands beyond your plate, and a lot of brands have vegan-friendly shoes,” says Moir. “The difference between ‘plant-based’ and ‘vegan’ has to do with ethical motivations and treatment of animals,” says Tullman. “Natural fibers such as cotton and synthetic fabrics like polyester are fine.” The path of vegan fitness can not only offer health benefits, but also a personal connection to the Earth. “It’s given me an opportunity to share my journey with others and to allow them to reach their own specific goals,” says Washington. “Mentally, it’s given me more depth of thought and spiritually connected me with the ‘YOUniverse’ as a whole.”

arch brings the first whiffs of fragrant spring air, along with a heightened chance of runny noses, coughs, sore throats and congestion in youngsters. The spring and fall months are the most likely times to catch a cold because seasonal allergens inflame nostrils, making it easier for cold viruses to have their way. Although many worried parents reach for cold and cough medicines, antihistamines or even antibiotics, there is little evidence that these ease symptoms or hasten recovery, and they may even cause harm, according to reports from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).

The AAP suggests some natural approaches for symptoms, including sponging for fevers as well as hydration, honey and chest rubs. A metastudy published in American Family Physician in 2012 found that treatment with buckwheat honey, Umcka ColdCare, nasal saline irrigation, a vapor rub or zinc sulfate “may decrease cold symptoms in children.” Here are those and some other natural strategies:

Natural alternatives are sold at health food stores, and a do-it-yourself version can be made simply by mixing together one cup of coconut oil, 20 drops of eucalyptus oil and 10 drops of peppermint oil.

in her family shows signs of getting sick, they begin gargling with salt water, says Tangela Walker-Craft, a mother and former teacher in Lakeland, Florida. “Saltwater loosens mucus and flushes bacteria out of the throat. It will also help to reduce swelling,” she says.

Elderberry or Umcka to ease symptoms: A recent

meta-analysis in Complementary Therapies in Medicine concluded that elderberry syrup (in stores as Sambucol) reduces the duration and severity of cold and flu symptoms. “The syrup is sweet and delicious, so typically very easy to get children to take,” says naturopathic doctor Kiera Smialek, of Scottsdale, Arizona. Umcka ColdCare, based on the South African geranium, halved cold symptoms in five days compared to a placebo in a University of Chicago study.

Warming socks to boost immunity: This odd-sounding

strategy “increases circulation, decreases chest congestion and increases the activity of the immune system,” says Smialek. Soak a pair of cotton socks in ice cold water. Wring them out and place them on the child’s feet. Cover them with thick dry socks, ideally wool. Keep them on overnight. In the morning, the wet, cotton socks will be dry. “Remember, the best remedies for cold and flu are rest and time,” says Tynan. In the meantime, though, steps like these “can help you kick it much faster and reduce some symptoms while you’re doing so.” Ronica A. O’Hara is a Denver-based health writer. The Vagus Nerve Matters by Eric Winder, DC

T

he vagus nerve has a unique role in your health. It runs from a small hole in your skull, down your neck, then to all your organs. However, when it is injured or low in function, it can cause a host of problems, from nausea and ear pain, to a hoarse voice and even depression. While there are many options to temporarily stimulate the vagus nerve and relieve some of these problems, fascia release therapies can make profound, lasting improvements in this nerve’s function by permanently releasing restrictions that irritate the nerve. As an example, a patient, whom I will refer to as Pamela, recently came to our office. She suffered from neck and lower back pain from a car accident two years ago. Pamela also experienced frequent bouts of nausea and a chronic dry cough. Her initial treatment in our office focused on fascia restrictions caused by joint and muscle injury from the car accident. However, treating those areas caused only partial relief of her pain. Due to the dry cough and nausea, both potential symptoms of vagus nerve trauma, I changed the focus of her treatment to connective tissue in areas that 38

could affect the vagus nerve. Releasing restrictions in the front of the neck, left side of the sternum, and several points in the abdominal muscles gave tremendous relief to Pamela’s neck and back pain. Her nausea and dry cough also disappeared as a result of this vagus nerve focused treatment. She was thrilled, but somewhat surprised, that focus on the vagus nerve helped so much. I explained to her that, among other problems, the vagus nerve can cause organ tension or irritation, which then could refer pain into the spine. Pamela’s spinal pain had been caused by restriction around the nerve resulting from her accident. While there are many potential causes of vagus nerve injury, the most common include whiplash, diabetes, Lyme’s disease, extreme stress and upper respiratory viral infections. Symptoms of vagus nerve trauma can vary because the nerve is connected to so many places in the head and abdomen. There are vagus nerve connections to the skin around the ear and to the vocal cords, so vagus problems potentially can cause ear pain or a hoarse, wheezing voice. Connections to the roof of the mouth and throat can also mean problems swallowing or a chronic cough. Because the vagus links to almost all of the internal organs, problems with the nerve can also cause symptoms and issues as varied as unusual heartrate, nausea, bloating, gastroparesis (lack of stomach motion) and constipation. For people who experience only mild vagus nerve irritation, there are a variety of home practices to help improve this nerve’s “tone,” or level of function. All of the following have been shown to improve tone in the vagus nerve: • • • • • • • •

Deep breathing with slow exhalations Vocal cord vibrations (sing, hum or gargle, for instance) Meditation Exercise Socializing and laughing Acute cold exposure (cold showers or cold water on the face) Omega-3 fat supplements (or foods rich in omega-3) Probiotic bacteria supplements

www.nasrq.com

As I mentioned above, fascia release therapy can often provide lasting relief for vagus nerve symptoms. Fascia (fibrous connective tissue) is practically everywhere in the body including in all the areas where the vagus nerve is located. At our office, we use hands-on fascia release therapy to release restrictions from the fascia in the abdomen, chest and neck that can potentially cause irritation to this important nerve. In some cases, we also utilize low-level laser therapy to relax the areas around the nerve and improve its function. With thorough treatment, fascia release therapy can improve the symptoms of vagus nerve dysfunction to restore quality of life and health. You are invited to attend an evening program on March 25, where you can learn in-depth about fascia, why it is important, and how to solve fascia problems when they create gut symptoms. Dr. Eric Winder will discuss case examples, provide a treatment demonstration and hold a Q&A session following the presentation. Attendees are invited to arrive at 6:50 p.m. for refreshments, and the program itself will take place from 7–8 p.m. This free event is located at 3131 S Tamiami Trail, #102, Sarasota. To RSVP, call 941-957-8390. Dr. Eric Winder has 23 years in practice, and focuses on relieving pain and restoring alignment and motion through fascia release therapies without forceful manipulation. For more information, visit GentleBay.com.

From the Common Cold to the Coronavirus:

How Chinese Medicine Plays a Role in Boosting the Immune System by Dr. Cynthia Clark, Acupuncture Physician, Applied Clinical Nutritionist

I

n about 200 AD, Governor Zhang Zhongjing watched two thirds of his beloved family and town die from a terrible disease. Governor Zhang was relentless in his pursuit of understanding and effectively treating the deadly virus. What resulted from this labor of love has given the medical world a lasting legacy of information. He charted out six fundamental phases of disease, then documented their specific characteristics and found a treatment for them in the seminal Chinese herbal classic: the Shang Han Lung. Rather than just stating, “Take this antibiotic to see if it works and doesn’t wreck your digestive system in the process,” the information presented in the classical Chinese medicine training points instead, through symptom and observation, to which phase the disease is in and where it is headed next. A person might have one or more symptoms of a certain stage, and this technique needs to be combined with a proper tongue and pulse observation to confirm the diagnosis and accurately determine the right treatment. These stages are as follows: Tai Yang (Greater Yang) with stiff neck, headache, chills and fever; Yang Ming (Yang Brightness) with profuse sweating, hot body temperature, thirst and constipation; Shao Yang (Lesser Yang) with a disease that has 40

Sarasota/Manatee Edition

lasted more than five days accompanied by chills and fever, and chest discomfort; Taiyin (Greater Yin) with chills, distended abdomen, and vomiting or diarrhea; Shaoyin (Lesser Yin) with anxiety, drowsiness, diarrhea, chills and cold; Jueyin (Absolute Yin): thirst, difficult urination, physical collapse, pain in the chest, and hunger with no desire to eat. In the first stage, a person might feel better from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. In the second, they might feel better from 3–9 p.m. In the third, they might feel better from 3–9 a.m. In the fourth, they might feel better from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. In the fifth, they might feel better from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. And in the final stage, that person might feel better from 1–7 a.m. How is this information relevant today? In the past several weeks, a number of people have experienced sickness. Take a woman named Mary, for example, who had a wellness appointment scheduled at our practice, but called that morning to report she’d come down with an ailment and asked if she should still come in—she didn’t want to get anyone sick. This was considerate, but we told her, “Yes, this is the most important time to come in.” Upon arriving, Mary’s pulse was “floating,” which means that it was close to the surface of her skin, and her tongue had a thin, white coat on it. She also presented with chills, fatigue, and a stiff neck and back. Mary received a tea which contained

www.nasrq.com

cinnamon twig, ginger, Chinese date and kudzu. These ingredients work together synergistically which means that when they are cooked together, new molecules form that enhance their healing properties. She also received acupuncture which focused on bringing blood flow and Thelper cells to the points which stimulated her immune system and digestion. One of these was Stomach 36 which is one of the most powerful immune system points on the human body. By taking this tea, Mary felt much improved in just a few hours, and was able to return to work. “The body is to nature as a violin is to the orchestra. The strings are to the violin as the organs are to the body. For the orchestra to play in harmony, all the instruments must be tuned to each other. If a single instrument is out of tune, the whole sound is dissonance rather than harmony,” explains the book Between Heaven and Earth: A Guide to Chinese Medicine. The immune system as a whole can be thought of in this way. Chinese medicine has shown to be effective from diseases that range from the common cold to HIV to MRSA. In 2015, researcher Tu Youyou won the Nobel prize for the use of Chinese medicine in treatment of malaria. It has also been used to treat both the cold and flu for thousands of years. At this moment, various Chinese medicine herbs are researched for their use in boosting the immune system to prevent and recover from the Coronavirus.

LIVING IN SYNCHRONICITY

The Power of Meaningful Coincidence

W

by Meg Lundstrom

hen we have an inner need that converges with an outside event, it is a meaningful coincidence known as synchronicity, and it happens to us all. It can be simple, like a playful sprite: recurring numbers or dates, all the lights turning green as we race to meet an appointment or a call from a faraway friend just when we want to talk to them. Or it can be profound: a chance meeting with an employer looking for exactly our skills, unexpected money appearing when we’re in a pinch, a timely rescue or our grandmother’s favorite, obscure song coming on the radio or app just as we’re feeling teary-eyed on the anniversary of her death. Whether they are lighthearted or life-changing, synchronicities link us to an underlying order in the universe that is profoundly reassuring. They open us to mystery and delight. They give us a sense of being taken care of. They nudge us to grow in scary, but life-affirming directions. They awaken a sense of awe, which studies have shown to be the emotion most likely to make us reach out generously to others—and that evokes even more synchronicity. And they can make daily life a lark. By its very nature, we can’t create synchronicity, but we can live life in a way that encourages it to show up. The more

www.nasrq.com

engaged we are spiritually—whether that means prayer, meditation, walking in nature or loving others deeply—the more likely synchronicity is. Being open, selfhonest, courageous, engaged, grateful and fully present summons it, which is where therapy, yoga and bodywork can be useful. But we don’t have to be saintly or enlightened; synchronicity is there for us all. It is simply the way the Universe works. The first step is to notice synchronicity when it occurs, and honor it. As with humans, when we give it our attention and say thank you, it makes it more likely to show up in our life again. At some point as our trust builds, synchronicity becomes simply the way our life works. Things show up as we need them and we are in the right place at the right time. Even when occurrences seemingly go awry, we glimpse an underlying order that gives us strength and purpose. Life becomes a steady stream of meaningfulness and inner and outer exploration. We find ourselves living in flow, attuned to life’s deepest currents and awash in deep gratitude. We imagine the people suffering who need support and think about how we are growing the plants to help them. ~Lara Miller molecules naturally created within the human body. “When we can’t sleep or are stressed out, cannabinoid levels go way down,” Bongiorno says. While prescription drugs overwhelm the body with adverse side effects, CBD can healthfully bring back balance. But CBD won’t trigger an altered state because there is little to no tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive chemical in marijuana that produces a high, he says, adding that he starts patients at a low daily dose of 25 milligrams. It’s important to talk with a physician about drug interactions, Bongiorno says. For instance, CBD can increase levels of blood-thinning medications, according to a 2017 study published in Epilepsy & Behavior Case Reports. CBD can possibly treat a wide range of conditions, from fear of public speaking to bipolar and post-traumatic stress disorders, but more research is needed, experts say. A 2018 clinical trial published in JAMA Psychiatry suggests CBD offers potential in treating psychosis. More recently, researchers in a 2019 case study of 27 patients published by the Permanente Journal concluded, “Cannabidiol may hold benefit for anxiety-related disorders.”

Seeds of Hope

The most important step consumers can take to find a safe, quality

product is to know where their CBD comes from, experts say. Lara Miller is an organic farmer in Lafayette, Colorado, who in 2017 dedicated a parcel of her two-acre farm to growing hemp for her business, North Field Farmacy. “I added in hemp because it is a dynamic plant that produces fiber, seed and medicine for us humans, all at the same time,” she says. Miller’s small, women-owned business grows the leafy plants outdoors in organic soil and harvests by hand. “We test in the field, post-harvest, during extraction and in the final product,” she says. “We know our product is clean and pure and potent.” This isn’t always the case. A 2017 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association showed that in 84 CBD products sold online by 31 companies, 26 percent contained less CBD than the amount listed on the label. Miller receives weekly calls from those wanting to purchase her plants and start a CBD business. “What bothers me the most is that not one person has asked how my hemp is grown,” she says. “It all feels like a big grab; the integrity isn’t there.” Miller continues to decline these requests and spends her days on the farm, where—come harvest time—she, alongside her crew, engages in some visualizations. “We imagine the people suffering who need support and think about how we are growing the plants to help them.” Julie Marshall is a Colorado-based writer and author of Making Burros Fly: Cleveland Amory, Animal Rescue Pioneer. Kibble Quandary A Fresh Look at Pet Food by Julie Peterson

E

ating healthy is a family affair, and that includes the family pet. However, what works for humans may be less than optimal for Fluffy or Fido, as each requires a species-specific, nutritionally balanced regimen. Most pet parents opt for commercial dog or cat food that comes in a bag or a can, but many are beginning to consider more natural options. “Kibble is often the most economical way to feed your pet. But its processed state makes it the least optimal,” says Angie Krause, DVM, at Boulder Holistic Vet, in Colorado. Canned food is also heavily processed and potentially toxic. In 2017, Clean Label Project, a nonprofit testing laboratory, completed a study of 1,084 pet food products, screening them for more than 130 toxins and contaminants linked to cancer and other conditions. Results showed cadmium, a heavy metal, in 94 percent of the products, along with arsenic and lead. Contaminants aren’t the only concern. “Up to 50 percent of commercial foods are composed of meat meal and byproducts,” says Armaiti May, DVM, owner of Dr. May’s Veterinary House Calls, in Los Angeles. These can include meat from dead, dying, diseased or disabled animals, and even rendered dogs and cats from animal shelters,

says May. “We are seeing more cancer, neurologic conditions and kidney disease, and there is evidence that the increase in these diseases may be due to harmful ingredients in commercial, meat-based foods.”

Healthy Alternative Diets

Owners that switch from commercial foods report their animals display thicker coats, brighter eyes and greater energy. However, dogs and cats require specific ranges of vitamins, minerals, fats and carbohydrates, so it’s important to ensure that nutritional needs are met and a healthy balance is maintained.

n Home-Cooked Pet food recalls have prompted some families to start cooking for their charges, but it’s not as simple as sharing the family dinner. “There are online calculators that can help you create and balance recipes for dogs and cats. Balancing a diet can be tedious and often requires added supplements,” says Krause. Seeing a four-legged friend thrive was worth the extra time and cost for Yvonnda Stamp-Agent, a homemaker from Rockvale, Tennessee. Emma, a schnauzer mix, suffered from itchy skin, anal gland leakage, kidney crystals, vomiting and other problems. “We switched to home-cooked wild salmon and

The biologically appropriate raw food (BARF) diet, as described at BarfWorld. com, contains raw meats, vegetables and cooked grains and legumes. Proponents say it improves health from tooth to tail. “Buddha, my orange tabby, is 22 and no longer has an issue with hairballs,” says Kim Bolin, a Reno, Nevada real estate agent, who has fed raw for three years. Stephanie Krause, in Keego Harbor, Michigan, says her three dogs are more relaxed, probably from the time and effort needed to eat large bones—and they haven’t needed a teeth cleaning since going raw. “After eating raw bones, there was plaque laying all over the floor.” The BARF diet can be homemade, although most choose prepared frozen or freezedried products to ensure nutrient balance or to avoid handling raw meats. Angie Krause says the diet is controversial, largely due to human health risks from pathogenic bacteria.

n Vegan and Vegetarian For ethical and environmental reasons, homemade or pre-made, plant-based diets for companion animals are becoming more popular. “If the 163 million dogs and cats in the U.S. were their own country, it would be the fifth-largest meat-eating country on the planet,” says May. Cats cannot survive without meat, which provides the high protein, amino acids and other nutrients their bodies require. However, a 2018 study published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association suggests that plant-based diets, possibly supplemented with vitamins B12 and D and some amino acids, can meet nutrition requirements of dogs. “Dogs are omnivores, and can thrive on balanced, complete, plant-based diets. They have nutrient requirements, not ingredient requirements,” says May. Pet diets aren’t an all-or-nothing choice, says Angie Krause. “Eventually, my patient will always reveal what works for them. Listen to your pet’s body.” Julie Peterson lives in rural Wisconsin. Connect at JuliePeterson2222@gmail.com. March 2020
