Awakened Heart Intensive

A one day workshop in which you will be immersed and bathed in the blissful energies of the “Heart.”

Taught by “Awakened Teacher” Ed Beckley

Steps to “Enlightenment” and “Spiritual freedom” to accelerate your progress. Specific mantras that spontaneously awaken the heart. Formula breathing that dissolves obstructions to bliss. Toning sounds that heal emotional wounds. How a 10 minute a day practice can keep the heart expanding. How to transform and heal any relationship in 30 days. How to overcome compulsions and addictions by being connected.

His search for Enlightenment led him to meditate three to seven hours a day for almost 50 years. The businesses he developed generated over 500 million dollars in sales. His story chronicles the life of a passionate spiritual seeker who achieved enormous material success and then lost it all-his business, his reputation, his money, his health, his faith, his wife and finally in federal prison his freedom. There he lost himself! It was in prison that his lifelong search for Enlightenment finally ended in the Awakening of his own Heart.

letter from publisher

elcome, readers, to the start of 2020! It’s both a new year and a new decade which means the possibilities for growth and renewal are endless. In our first issue of this year, Natural Awakenings wants to take you on a journey of exploration to discover habits and practices that will lead to more balance, health and vitality—no matter what stage of life you’re in. To kickstart this issue, our feature article is all about the power of “Age-Defying Habits” that empower you to not just extend the longevity on your time here on this planet, but to enhance the quality of it too. This article delves into some of the incremental but meaningful shifts you can make in nutrition, exercise, sleep patterns, social engagement and attitude in order to manifest a higher sense of enjoyment and purpose in your life. These intentional habits can increase all areas of well-being—physical, mental, emotional and spiritual—as you age. Speaking of the holistic connection between mental and physical health, this month’s “Fit Body” article focuses on the benefits of conscious, low-impact exercise to mitigate effects of stress on both the mind and body. While high-intensity workouts have been found to escalate the body’s stress response, mindful exercises such as yoga, dance and Pilates activate the body’s natural circadian rhythms, metabolic function and hormonal release to manage chronic stress. This leads to sustainable fitness results and a more active, resilient mind-body connection. Finally, while the new year ushers in the opportunity for a fresh start, that’s not all it brings with it. These winter months are also notorious for spikes in cold and flu symptoms, so our “Conscious Eating” article explores how to use food as medicine with the right kind of immunity boosting nutrition. For instance, colorful plant-based meals enriched with vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients are essential for immune system, while processed foods such as meat, dairy and wheat should be limited whenever possible. The more your body is fueled with wholesome nourishment, the more energized and resistant to sickness you will be. After all, a healthy and vibrant lifestyle often begins in the kitchen. This is just merely scratching the surface of all that awaits you in our first issue of 2020. Please join the wellness conversation and send questions, comments or feedback you might have to We look forward to another year on this path with all of you!

Why Do I Have the Blues? Mood Disorders and their Causes

e live in a complex world with different goals, values and aspirations, but one aspect of the human experience unites us—a daily search to feel our best. Mood state, energy levels and feelings of anxiety all impact our lives, so we need all the information, resources and treatments available to maintain a balanced brain chemistry and upbeat disposition. There are a host of factors that influence how we feel and how much energy we have. Some of these are vitamins, minerals, fatty and amino acid levels, neurotransmitter balance, adrenal fatigue, body toxins, medications or illicit drugs, mold, gluten and other food intolerances, EMF overload, unresolved emotional issues, dehydration, incorrect breathing patterns and lack of exercise, just to name a few. Awareness of what causes a mood disorder is the first step. A biofeedback evaluation is an affordable route to gain valuable insight on what is occurring inside the body. If you have questions about this biofeedback scanning option and how it can benefit you, contact Beata Molar, energy healer and owner of The Healing Room. Other modalities she practices include PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Technology), RIFE frequency applications with plasma tubes, sound healing and energy healing. Sessions last 90 minutes, and all her modalities are used in every session. Location: Aaron Ct., Sarasota. For more information, call 941-586-9539 or visit

Free Your Mind. Empower Your Life.

e each have the ability to empower ourselves. Sometimes we feel stuck, but we don’t have to remain stuck. So ask yourself, “Am I in control of my thoughts and emotions? Am I able to easily change a habit or incorporate a new one? How do I talk to myself about all my different goals and dreams?” You can overcome so much by unlocking the power of communication with the unconscious mind. The most effective, scientifically-proven techniques are through Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). Successful people today such as Tony Robbins, Oprah Winfrey and Pharrell Williams utilize NLP techniques to promote effective changes in life. Often described as a user manual for your conscious and unconscious mind, NLP offers an opportunity to explore how your mind and emotions work to achieve goals and how to let go of unwanted habits or behaviors for lasting results in every aspect of life. Join the Empowerment Partnership for an Integrative NLP Practitioner Certification® Training in the Tampa area on February 6-9. This experiential program teaches proven techniques to communicate more effectively, build rapport easily, reprogram the mind for success, release limiting beliefs, and overcome procrastination, lack of motivation, depression and various phobias. Good Vibes, Healers and Forgiveness in the Field of Spirituality

ow many times have you seen the mantra, “good vibes only,” and heard that you need to forgive those who have caused you harm? But when you still feel anger or hurt no matter how many times you’ve tried to forgive and move on, do you think, “I am definitely not doing this right. I am not on the right path.” In this “high vibe” culture, many people are afraid to hold space for what feels too messy or difficult. It’s more common for people to offer advice or platitudes than to just be present with someone in the midst of their tears and pain. It’s easier to want to shift your vibration quickly by numbing yourself with substances, food, relationships, forced smiles and healers. This is called spiritual bypassing––the act of forced practices to override what you would rather not face. There are some gifted, authentic healers out there, but they can only help once you are in a state that allows for healing to occur. They are facilitators, not magicians, so you must do your part for anything to work. It’s important to also keep in mind that healers and teachers are human and fall off their own paths too. No one is in constant alignment. It is vital to release any negative self-talk or victim mentality and embrace your dark shadow. Take all the time you need to process both the pain and grief. Forgive others only when you feel ready. Transformation is a solo journey, and you alone know how to raise your own vibration. For more information, call Elysian Fields at 941-361-3006 or visit 20

Make 2020 the Best Year Ever: Eliminate Fat or Tighten Skin with Cryoskin

ryoskin works by using sub-zero temperatures to eliminate stubborn body fat. We utilize this science to provide slimming, skin tightening, toning, cellulite and facial treatments with non-invasive results. Cryoskin slimming helps our customers lose inches off their stomach, love-handles, thighs and other areas. Toning sessions help to diminish cellulite, tone the body and tighten the skin. We are so confident in this process that if you book a stomach slimming session, and you do not measure at least half an inch less after the session, then your treatment is free. Why should you pick Cryoskin at Cryo Studio Sarasota? Aside from in New York, where the Cryoskin headquarters is located, we are the only studio in the Eastern United States that has Master Trained Certified staff. This means you will not find any other business with more knowledge and technique for these treatments than we have. Dr. Cifra Helps Local Resident with Neck and Low Back Pain Utilizing Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression

on D. of Bradenton, Fl. had been suffering for many years before finding relief at the hands of Dr. Cifra. For over 12 years he suffered with a compressed vertebra which was debilitating to the point where he could hardly walk. A pinched nerve was causing spasms in his left hip leaving him with pain that got worse and worse. Ron went the traditional route and saw his personal physician for diagnosis and treatment. He tried epidurals, which did not last long and eventually stopped working altogether. Next, he tried ablation, which worked initially but after 4 months, the pain would come back again. Ron even visited a surgeon, who recommended he have an MRI done. Unfortunately, the surgeon concluded that an operation would not help him. Feeling frustrated, Ron asked his physician if he should try Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression. The physician was not aware of this treatment but agreed that it would be worth trying- he was out of options. Ron met with Dr. Cifra for an evaluation and found out he would be a candidate for treatment. The treatment plan would last about 3 months, with visits 3-4 times per week. Initially Dr. Cifra asked Ron where his tender spots were, to be able to treat them. After 3 weeks of treatment, Ron stated that the tender spot was gone “6 out of 7 days a week I can stand straight up now. I could not do that before.” Ron hopes to play golf again and looks forward to his continued treatments. Dr. Cifra is accepting appointments to treat patients - call today for a FREE consultation. Journey through Life, Grief, Intuition and Spirituality

New Year opens with the promise to move beyond what no longer serves you, and The Spirit University wants to help you along this journey with a series of events and workshops. Kelvin Chin, founder of Overcoming the Fear of Death Foundation and Turning Within Meditation Foundation, will present workshops from January 10–12 on a variety of subjects. These will include how meditation is used to look inward and eliminate the anxiety that comes with knowing your own mortality in order to embrace the acceptance of what comes next. Evidential medium, divine healer, celestial connector and “man of mystery” Joseph Lobrutto will present “Is There More to Life than We Know?” from January 9–12. This workshop will teach you how to access your own psychic talents and mediumship channels. Spirituality is a quest for personal truths and understanding of the human experience, and to that end, “Matters of Spirit: Two Days of Spiritual Diversity” will take place from January 18–19. This series of interactive workshops and informative lectures can help you see past any misconceptions and learn about how others practice their soul-walk, so you can become a more compassionate, open-minded individual. Diane Corcoran, a registered nurse and retired Army Colonel, will share her firsthand insights and expertise on the subject of near-death experiences (NDE). From working with veterans, police officers and first responders who had their own stories of NDEs, Corcoran educates others on how to navigate the complexities and connect to those who have encountered NDEs. This workshop will take place from January 31–February 2. Finally, vice-president of the Spiritual Science Fellowship in Canada, medium John White, will be the Spirit University’s guest teacher for January. He will offer classes on akashic records, lucid dreaming, mediumship skills, medical intuitive training and more. Location: 373 Braden Ave., Sarasota. Chomping on more nuts daily keeps the pounds at bay, according to research published in the journal BMJ Nutrition, Prevention & Health. Using records from three long-term longitudinal studies spanning 20 years and including nearly 300,000 health professionals, the report from Harvard University’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health found that increasing nut intake by a half serving a day—about 12 almonds or seven walnut halves—was linked to lower instances of weight gain and obesity. Swapping out a serving of meats, refined grains or desserts for half a serving of nuts was associated with staving off weight gain of between 0.9 and 1.5 pounds in any four-year period. A consistently higher nut intake of at least half a serving a day was associated with a 23 percent lower risk of putting on 11 or more pounds and becoming obese in the same timeframe. No such links were found for eating more peanut butter. The researchers suggest the high fiber content of nuts can make a person feel full longer, and that that the fiber also binds well to fats in the gut, affecting a greater discharge of calories.

Live Near Green Spaces to Stave Off Metabolic Syndrome Middle-aged and older adults that live in greener neighborhoods have a lower risk of metabolic syndrome, reports research from the Barcelona Institute for Global Health in the journal Environmental Pollution. The study followed more than 6,000 British adults in a cohort initially between ages 45 and 69 for 14 years, and correlated health records and interviews with satellite images of greenery. They found that exposure to green spaces seemed to help prevent metabolic syndrome and its individual components such as large waist circumference, high levels of blood fats and hypertension. The results “could be related to better opportunities provided by green spaces to perform physical activity, as well as a decrease in exposure to air pollution,” notes Carmen de Keijzer, first author of the study. Women fared even better than men, perhaps because women may spend more time in green spaces.

Five Top Fascia Facts

Sandhill Healing Center, Inc. • Sandhill Medical Thermography • Serving Charlotte County since 1992 • Non-Invasive • Experience the Difference! Medical Thermography

by Eric Winder, DC

NO Compression • NO Radiation • NO Pain Med-Hot Thermal Imaging Systems is a unique technology that measures and records skin temperature patterns and variations emitted from the human body. It helps illustrate a body’s physiology by showing patterns of active inflammation along with an increased blood supply feeding an existing disease pattern. In recent years, a variety of studies have called into question the safety of cumulative exposure to radiation. Medical Thermography emits nothing: it only takes an image. It is a useful tool for frequent screening with NO chance of danger.

lot of my patients share a specific frustration. They are thrilled with their treatment results, believe that fascia therapy is the next frontier in healthcare, and are fascinated with how it works. However, they often express their frustration at trying to explain the concept of fascia therapy to friends and loved ones. Fortunately, while the underlying concepts of fascia treatment can be a complicated subject, there a few facts which can summarize it precisely.

OUR Services Include:

• Experienced, Professional, Certified Clinical Thermographers • Highest quality Medical High-Definition Camera provides finest images for precise interpretation • All images analyzed by specially trained and certified MD’s with written report • Report discussed and given to you with copies of your images, patient education • A new look at the inflammatory process and functionality of the body • Affordable Imaging Packages

It’s Everywhere

Fascia is fibrous connective tissue, and it literally holds us together. It wraps around every muscle and the bundles of muscle fiber inside of each muscle. It covers bones, blood vessels, organs and nerves. Even the brain and spinal cord are covered in fascia. It is interconnected with other fibrous tissues like tendons, ligaments and spinal discs. Altogether, fascia makes a giant, web-like network throughout the entire body. It is our structural fabric, in which every point is connected to every other point.

It’s a Sense Organ

Actually, that’s not quite accurate. Fascia is a tissue, not an organ. But it acts as the sensory organ for the most important sense we have in our body—position sense which is also known as proprioception. While this isn’t included in the familiar list of five senses that we all learned in school, it should be number one on a new list of six because we can’t live without it. What is position sense? If you close your eyes, you can probably touch your finger to your nose, although you can’t see either one. With your eyes still closed, you can also probably scratch your knee or the back of your head. How do you know where these body parts are, even if you can’t see them? The answer lies in approximately 40 million nerve endings which are embedded in the body’s fascia network. Just as the nerve endings in the eye are stimulated by light to create vision, these special nerve endings in the fascia are stimulated by pressure and tension of the fascia to give the sense of proprioception. Position sense makes the following possible: • • •

All coordinated motion—walking, talking, brushing teeth or swinging a golf club—basically, every action that you take. All posture—you can’t stand and sit upright or even half-way slouch without a properly functioning position sense. Without it, you would just lie flat on the floor. Joint alignment and stability—proprioception gives the body information that it needs to keep your joints aligned and protected.

Muscular balance—most muscles have an opposite that balances against them. For instance, the biceps and triceps move your elbow in opposite directions. Muscular balance is critical for making complex movements like swinging a tennis racket or walking across the floor.

Without these vital functions working properly, some major issues can arise. This brings us to our next fascia fact.

It Can Cause Big Problems

As a structural tissue, fascia is susceptible to changes from injury. Causes include muscle strain, impact injuries, sprains, repetitive stress and chronic muscle tension. Such injuries might cause this normally flexible tissue to become stiff or restricted which, in turn, can interfere with the nerves that are used for position sense, and that’s when problems can arise. When fascia is stiffened or distorted by injury, it can cause a “glitch” in position sense. This means potential problems with muscular balance, joint stability, posture and alignment. Often, these problems are subtle at first and can take months, or even years, to cause pain or other symptoms. A person who suddenly experiences migraine headaches might have no idea that the new headaches are caused by fascia restriction in her neck from a car accident several years ago. Or someone else might not realize that stiff fascia from a childhood ankle fracture is throwing off his hip alignment to cause weakness and pain in his shoulder. Because fascia is everywhere, restricted fascia can cause problems almost anywhere too. Headaches, spinal pain,

plantar fasciitis, vertigo, tendinitis and bursitis are just a few of the problems that often result from a fascial restriction. In addition, because fascia is an interconnected network, problems from fascial restriction can travel. This means that an initial problem in one area of the body, such as an ankle, can cause pain or other problems in an entirely different area, such as a shoulder.

It’s Treatable

The positive news about fascia restriction is that it is not permanent damage. There are many different hands-on methods which can be used to release stiffness and restriction from this connective tissue. In our office, we use treatment techniques that apply gentle pressure to release restrictions quickly and permanently, often relieving years of chronic pain and stiffness. The amount of treatment needed varies from person to person, but for most the result is similar— lasting change in the fascia and relief from aggravated stress and pain. There are different types of restriction which can occur in fascia, with different treatment methods for each type. Appropriate treatment restores muscular balance, joint alignment and stability, as well as returning the body to better posture. Fascia restriction treatment addresses the root of pain, rather than temporarily masking the problem.

Some of Your fascia’s Favorite Things

Keeping your body’s fascia in shape requires a few important items: •

Water—healthy fascia needs to be well

hydrated, so drink enough water to keep your urine light colored or clear. Sleep—fatigue can lead to muscular weakness and a greater tendency to muscle strain, which can cause fascial restriction. Nutrition—maintaining fascia requires adequate protein and minerals in your diet. Also, avoiding proinflammatory foods, like grains and sugar, helps to protect the fascia from becoming easily restricted. Movement—fascia needs consistent movement to remain healthy. Stretching, jumping, and resistance exercises, like weight training or swimming, all stimulate the fascia to keep it strong, supple and resistant to developing restrictions, always within the safe limits of your abilities, of course.

I hope these five fascia facts have given you a more comprehensive understanding of this vital tissue. Now you know why fascia matters—and how to keep yours functioning! You are invited to attend an evening program on January 29, 2020, where you can learn in-depth about fascia, why it is important and how the successful treatment of fascia can relieve pain. Dr. Eric Winder will discuss case examples, provide a treatment demonstration and hold a Q&A session following the presentation. Attendees are invited to arrive at 6:50 p.m. for refreshments, and the program itself will take place from 7–8 p.m. This free event is located at 3131 S Tamiami Trail, #102, Sarasota. What is Biological Dentistry? by Dr. Martina Mallery, DDS

lternative health practices are gaining traction as more and more people recognize the level of toxicity that people are subjected to as a result of destructive farming practices, unnatural food production, water treatment, air contamination, EMF pollution, cosmetic products, invasive medical procedures and pharmaceuticals which often lead to more suffering. People all over the world are returning to Mother Nature for micronutrients and healing remedies to seek preventative and conservative health care, and many medical professionals are choosing alternative fields or converting their practices to serve their like-minded patients. At White Sands Dentistry, we have undergone a full conversion to biological dental practice after reviewing scientific literature that shows the toxicity of some materials and procedures taught in dental schools and subsequently practiced in mainstream dentistry. As we have connected with our peers in the field of biological—also called holistic—dentistry through professional groups, we now want to share with you the main features of this emergent field. Biological dentistry is fluoride-free as mounting 30

Sarasota/Manatee Edition

scientific evidence shows that fluoride is a carcinogen, neurotoxin and hormonal disruptor. Having dental cavities is actually a systemic condition where processed food, sugar, and lack of vitamins and minerals cause dysbiosis and acidic conditions in the body. This leads to the reversal of lymph flow through dentin, impeding tooth detoxification and leading to demineralization of enamel and subsequent cavity formation. Eliminating processed foods and introducing live, nutrient dense and fermented food will correct this—not the addition of toxic fluoride. Biological dentistry is mercury-free and mercury-safe. This means that “silver” dental amalgams are handled with utmost care. Dental amalgams are only 10% silver but 50% elemental mercury. This mercury vaporizes on a 24/7 basis while in a person’s mouth and bioaccumulates in the body which, over time, leads to many neurological and systemic dysfunctions, and has been singled out as a prime suspect in Autism and Alzheimer’s disease, among a list of other serious conditions. Extremely unsafe levels, however, are released during

the placement and removal of these fillings. A typical biological dental practice will not use this material to restore teeth, and when it is necessary to remove such an existing filling, a safe protocol will be utilized. This protocol has been developed by International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology, and a professional certification course is offered through this organization. Biological dentistry is metal-free. Metals utilized in dental alloys—whether it be mercury amalgams, porcelain-fused to metal crowns, gold crowns, titanium implants or orthodontic brackets, these prosthetic frameworks are not compatible with human health. Some metals are carcinogenic, most are negatively challenging the immune system, and all of them disrupt neuronal firing in the brain and along the nerve fibers. Biological dentistry will safely remove existing metal restorations and utilize more compatible plastic, resin or porcelain alternatives including ceramic implants. Patients are encouraged to receive biological extractions and dental-material biocompatibility testing to determine the type of dental material that will be least likely to provoke their immune systems. This is especially important in those who have already been diagnosed with an autoimmune condition. Biological dentistry makes extensive use of ozone gas as an affordable and nontoxic therapeutic modality. It is used in the treatment of gingivitis and periodontal disease, in desensitizing abrasions, in sterilizing tooth surface after caries removal, in reversing small surface cavities, in revitalization of tooth nerve after extensive restorative treatment, as an alternative to dental sealants, and in the sterilization of surgical sites. Moreover, surgical dental procedures are taken a step further in biological dentistry. Many patients now seek the removal of teeth previously treated with root canal therapy as mounting scientific evidence exposes the fact that such teeth remain infected even after this procedure. A typical biological dental practice will send such extracted tooth to a specialized lab for bacterial analysis, so the patient can follow-up accordingly with a physician, as

many of these lab reports turn up highly pathogenic bacteria including spirochetes and amoebas. The presence of teeth treated with root canals have been linked to heightened incidence of autoimmune disease and cancer. Biological dentist will also take great care in the removal of the periodontal ligament from within the surrounding bone, as it is highly contaminated with microbes. As previously mentioned, ozone gas is also used to sterilize the extraction socket. Another addition to the armamentarium of a biological dentist is the so-called PRF, or platelet rich fibrinogen. PRF has many applications in medicine in general, but has recently gained traction in dentistry as well. The clinical staff at White Sands Dentistry recently completed series of training in this modality. PRF is harvested from a patient’s own blood. Blood is drawn into tubes and placed in a centrifuge that separates the different layers. Only the top yellow plasma layer, called PRF, is utilized. PRF is rich in infection-fighting immune cells, clotting factors, and stem cells that promote bone

formation and proper healing. High-dose Vitamin C infusion is also performed to take advantage of the established IV line. Vitamin C administered in this fashion has been shown to accelerate healing after surgery, lower post-operative pain, and to help the body to detoxify from anesthetic solution and IV sedation medicine. We also offer Dermapen with PRF microneedling treatments as well. In addition, when it comes to biological dental surgery, a phenomenon of NICO or cavitation lesion is addressed too NICO stands for neuralgia-inducing cavitational osteonecrosis of the jaw bone. This is a controversial but real and serious issue. A typical dental school will not teach the removal of the periodontal ligament after tooth extraction, but its presence leads to improper bone re-generation and a small dead space remains for years to come. Lab tests of the material collected from these NICO lesions show high levels of pathogenic microbes. Revision of these long-standing NICO lesions need to be considered especially in someone with autoimmunity or cancer, as these diseases

have been linked to NICO presence in the jaw bone as well. Finally, as we learn that a tooth is indeed a delicate living organ with its own blood supply, nerve bundle, and lymphatic drainage connected to internal organs and the rest of the body, we have pushed a pause button on the many destructive procedures such as dental crowns when done solely for cosmetic purposes. Even when a tooth is extensively damaged and a crown prep would be warranted, the field of biomimetic dentistry has developed toothpreserving alternatives to dental crowns. A kevlar mesh called Ribbond is used to re-enforce the internal part of the tooth to prevent future stress cracks for example. At White Sands Dentistry, we have made significant changes and invested in advanced training and technology to reflect the cutting-edge scientific research that is revolutionizing our field. If you feel we are the right dental practice for your needs, call 941-748-9393 for more information and to schedule an appointment.

We know caloric restriction extends life. But no one wants to do it, because it’s no fun. ~Lori Taylor

In their search for secrets to longevity, investigators often look for lifestyle clues provided by long-lived populations. Those residing in what National Geographic Fellow and bestselling author Dan Buettner calls “Blue Zones”, for example, are more likely to celebrate their 100th birthday and escape chronic maladies such as heart disease and cancer—the two biggest killers in the U.S. Buettner has identified the “Power 9” lifestyle habits commonly practiced by centenarians living in the five designated Blue Zones—Sardinia, Italy; Okinawa, Japan; Ikaria, Greece; Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica; and the Seventh Day Adventist community in Loma Linda, California.

LIVING LONG & WELL Age-Defying Habits and the Fountain of Youth by Melinda Hemmelgarn

t age 29, Betty Holston Smith, of Rockville, Maryland, weighed more than 200 pounds, smoked cigarettes and ate processed junk food. Now, almost 79 years young, she is a vegan ultra-marathon runner and an inspiration to anyone wanting to age well. Smith’s story underscores the findings of researchers that have long pursued the keys to a long and healthy life. Some of these factors—heredity, for instance—are beyond our control. However, the most critical ingredient seems to be our daily habits. Although we’ve all likely heard or read about someone that lived into their 90s, ate bacon, drank whiskey and smoked a pack a day, these individuals are outliers: In truth, longevity is determined by a combination of genes, environment, lifestyle choices and luck. 32

Sarasota/Manatee Edition

For example, some individuals may be born with genes that confer longevity, but be unlucky due to where they live. The National Center for Health Statistics reports that life expectancy varies by zip code. That’s because where we live influences how we live, predicting access to healthful food, clean air and water, safe neighborhoods and stress-relieving green spaces such as parks and gardens. Genes are important, but our social and physical environments play a greater role in predicting our “healthspan” —the essence of a long and healthy life. According to researchers at the Columbia Center for Children’s Environmental Health, in New York City, even our first environment—the womb—can spawn diseases later in life if pregnant women are exposed to air pollutants, pesticides and the toxic stress of poverty.

Regardless of genetics, the following behaviors can help anyone slow the aging process and improve quality of life: n Eat a plant-based diet. n Stop eating when 80 percent full. n Practice stress reduction techniques. n Find a sense of purpose. n Engage in physical activity throughout the day. n Consume moderate amounts of alcohol with food and friends. n Join a faith community, regardless of denomination. n Belong to a social network that engages in healthy behaviors. n Share love and time with children, parents and partners.

Survival of the Fittest

Tom LaFontaine, Ph.D., a clinical exercise physiologist based in Columbia, Missouri, says, “Mounting evidence shows that engaging in regular aerobic and strength exercise offers robust defenses against life-threatening diseases such as heart disease and several cancers.” One important marker of long-term health, particularly among women, notes LaFontaine, is bone mineral density (BMD). After menopause, BMD decreases in women and can lead to osteopenia—low BMD—and osteoporosis—pathological loss of BMD. “Women with osteoporosis are particularly at risk for fractures, especially of the hip, which can lead to a reduced lifespan.” LaFontaine recommends weightbearing exercises such as walking, jogging and high-intensity weight training to significantly improve BMD; and he’s proven that it works. “In 2012, we started a program called Older Women on Weights (OWOW), in which 40 post-menopausal women with an average age in the low 60s train with heavy weights. Some even participate in weightlifting competitions.” “We have observed women in this group move from osteopenia to normal BMD and from osteoporosis to osteope-

Smith, the septuagenarian marathoner, was inspired to make a change nearly 50 years ago when her 3-year-old daughter teased, “You can’t catch me!” during an innocent game of tag. She knew she had to make a change. She tried diet pills, fad diets and other quick fixes, but realized they were worthless. However, each evening Smith tuned in to Gabe Mirkin, a physician who hosted a national radio program about health and fitness. Following his advice, Smith began eating a diet rich in organic fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts and seeds, and says today she doesn’t want to put anything in her body that interferes with her lifestyle. She outlines the steps to her transformation in the book, Lifestyle by Nature: One Woman’s Break from the Unhealthy Herd to Roam Forever Healthy in Nature’s Lifestyle Change Herd. The first step—finding internal strength—is the most important, she says. “Most people have something in their lives they can point to for strength.” In addition to running 60 to 100 miles each week, Smith practices tai chi, meditates and enjoys camaraderie with her running mates. She also has an upbeat attitude, believing in the importance of passion, perseverance and “taking negative experiences and making them positive.” According to a report in the Journal of the American Medical Association Network, this spirit of optimism is protective against heart disease and other causes of death.

Eating Well, but Not Too Much

Food is a major contributor to both quality of life and life extension. Global and national recommendations to eat more fiber-rich whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds, and omega-3 fatty acids, while decreasing added sugars and sodium, all help reduce our risk for life-shortening diseases. The plant-based Mediterranean diet consistently rises to the top for its health-fortifying benefits. However, in contrast to our Western culture’s practice of eating until belt-bust January 2020

Both improving diet quality and restricting calories appear to help slow the rate of aging at the genetic level, in part by preserving the length of our telomeres— the structures at the end of chromosomes that protect our DNA. The Mediterranean diet, with its abundance of protective antioxidant and anti-inflammatory nutrients such as vitamins C and E, polyphenols and omega-3 fatty acids, help prevent age-associated telomere shortening.

The Sleep Connection

Michael Grandner, Ph.D., director of the Sleep and Health Research Program at the University of Arizona College of Medicine, says Americans tend to see sleep as unproductive time, but it’s a “biological requirement for life.” In fact, it is one of the three pillars of health, along with good nutrition and exercise, says Eve Van Cauter, Ph.D., former director of the Sleep, Metabolism and Health Center at the University of Chicago. “Studies

Similarly, Dorothy Sears, Ph.D., a professor of nutrition at the Arizona State University College of Health Solutions, has researched the impacts of both intermittent fasting and circadian rhythm on how our bodies handle calories. She recommends a “prolonged nightly fast” of 12 to 13 hours, as well as reducing caloric intake after 6 to 8 p.m. to help maintain a healthy weight and stave off such diseases as Type 2 diabetes and obesity-related cancers. Most significantly, she found that a 13-hour nightly fast reduced breast cancer recurrence by

nected, in order to make substantial and permanent changes in our quality of life, we need a holistic approach to self-care that does not gloss over the important role of brain function. So with 2020 underway and resolutions being kicked into gear, I spoke with Gregg Sledziewski, Executive Director of The Brain Wave Center in downtown Sarasota, to understand why brain health belongs at the forefront of our wellness pursuits throughout this New Year.

Don’t Bypass Your Brain Health this Year: Q&A with The Brain Wave Center

by Mary-Elizabeth Schurrer

s we look ahead with enthusiasm and anticipation to what the New Year has in store, many of us resolve for a healthier lifestyle. We recommit to our exercise goals. We fill our kitchens with nutritious food. We break habits that are no longer sustainable and build new ones that make us feel active, energized, nourished and strong. But with all this emphasis on our physical wellness, how much attention do we give to our mental health? How often do our resolutions focus on transforming our attitudes or perceptions, confronting our narrow beliefs and critical inner voices, healing from the wounds of emotional trauma, boosting our sense of awareness or concentration, and becoming mentally resilient overall? Around this time of year, we tend to fixate on how to improve our bodies when, in reality, we should be just as intentional about our brains. Since physical and mental well-being are inextricably con-

Natural Awakenings: What direction do you plan to take The Brain Wave Center in 2020—any new developments, expansions or partnerships coming down the pipeline? Gregg Sledziewski: Much of what we have planned this coming year revolves around our continued work with children, especially those who are underserved. Our mission is to help as many children as possible with neurofeedback, so payment arrangements can be made for families in need. To fulfill this mission, we developed strong partnerships with several 501c charity organizations, namely The EasterSeals of Southwest Florida, The Haven and, most recently, The Florida Center for Early Childhood. In fact, by the end of 2019 we served about 50 children, without a charge to their families, through our partnership programs. We expect this number to significantly increase in 2020, and we also will be concluding a research initiative to help survivors of abuse or trauma managed by our partner Resilient Retreat. This study has sought to determine the effectiveness of neurofeedback as part of a complete wellness plan for survivors. We are also expanding our work to support veterans with an organization called Healing our Heroes. In addition, we have partnered with the Psychological Associates of Central Florida (PACFlorida) to create a new comprehensive assessment program that identifies and verifies the potential for ADHD. Defining ADHD is not simple—it cannot be diagnosed with a physical examination, laboratory test or observation alone. Our new platform combines standard tests and rating scales traditionally used to detect the presence of ADHD, but it adds electrophysiologic measures to validate these findings and to identify other potential problems too. This initiative will also expand to include screening for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The Brain Wave Center helps children and adults with a diagnosis of ASD, and based on our experience in the community and with friends or family, we have realized the need for a centralized center for practical research and actionable treatments for ASD. Therefore, we plan to develop that center right here in Sarasota this year. NA: What specific modalities do you offer at The Brain Wave Center, and can you summarize how they benefit cognitive function and mental health? Sledziewski: Our base program includes qEEG brain mapping and Neurofeedback. Aside from neurofeedback, we also offer IV therapy, nutrition counseling, psychotherapy, lymphatic drainage, craniosacral therapy and more, depending on a client’s unique requirements. We can also refer out to massage therapists, energy

workers and even a law firm that advocates for families with special needs children. All our services are designed help clients rediscover their wellness. Extensive research has shown the brain can reorder itself and learn adaptive patterns at any life stage which means that brain function can improve. Neurofeedback changes brainwave imbalances and neural pathways, so regardless of how these imbalances occurred, our combined modalities—starting with neurofeedback—can ultimately strengthen these brainwave patterns to enhance function and optimize health. Generally, our clients tend to report improved moods, restful sleep, mental clarity, decreased impulsivity, restored control of depression or anxiety, and a host of other benefits—all without medication and harsh side-effects. NA: How does neurofeedback work, in basic terms, and why is it important to rewire the brain by creating different neural pathways? Sledziewski: At The Brain Wave Center, we specialize in the detection of issues with brain health, mental focus and age-related conditions that range from ADHD, stress, anxiety, depression, autism, memory loss, and trauma or PTSD. With the use of nationally recognized brain mapping techniques, we quickly establish brain function and initiate positive outcomes with non-invasive, customized neurofeedback programs. We all understand those daily bumps, bruises and repetitive tasks which take a toll on our bodies. But some don’t realize that, over time, seemingly unrelated issues like stress, anger, depression, negative habits or small head injuries can affect our brains too. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 90% of all diseases have a mental or emotional component. The brain regulates all our thoughts and behaviors, so when overburdened or injured, symptoms can manifest throughout the body—often in surprising ways. Most of us are aware, for instance, that a blow to the head can result in pain and dizziness, or a concussion might lead to disorientation, memory loss and nausea. However, it’s a lesser known fact

that unwanted mood changes, impulsive actions or sleepless nights can also be indicators of an overtaxed brain. The brain does not have to experience severe injuries, trauma, genetic issues or toxin exposures to suffer damage. Neurofeedback is a form of biofeedback that specifically targets the brain. While there are different types of neurofeedback, the most common is brainwave training. Brainwaves refer to the naturallyoccurring electricity that flows through our brains all the time. These waves—known as Delta, Theta, Alpha and Beta—range from slow to fast, and changes in the wave patterns can impact how we feel. For instance, too many slow waves can contribute to focus issues, while too many fast-moving waves can lead to anxiety. Frequently, neurofeedback starts with brain mapping. Sensors are attached to the scalp in order to produce a real-time EEG reading of the brain. This EEG shows both how and where these waves occur in the brain. Neurofeedback then is the process of training those waves to operate differently which results in more optimal brain function. Neurofeedback can be effective on its own, but continued research has determined that, when combined with traditional therapies such as cognitive behavioral therapies, exercise, nutrition and restful sleep, the outcomes are generally superior. Neurofeedback is not a “quick fix, but it is an effective, drug-free and natural approach to enhance mood, concentration, memory and overall cognition.

ost of us take our hands for granted until buttoning a shirt or opening a jar becomes a daunting task. Getting a grip on that pain and loss of function with holistic solutions can be a game-changer. Inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, as well as repetitive motion syndromes like carpal tunnel, are commonly linked to hand and wrist pain, and effective treatment relies on identifying the underlying cause. “Systemic inflammation will be an issue in any case, but the root condition needs to be addressed,” says Kiva Rose Hardin, a New Mexico-based herbalist and co-editor of Plant Healer Magazine. Carpal tunnel, for instance, is not always a repetitive injury syndrome; it can sometimes be

Susan Blum, M.D., author of Healing Arthritis: Your 3-Step Guide to Conquering Arthritis Naturally, agrees on both the role of inflammation and the importance of looking beyond the diagnosis itself. “Inflammation is a process in the body, an end result, and we have to go upstream, so

to speak, to find triggers including stress, gut health, toxins and infections.” By finding the trigger, relief is within reach with non-surgical solutions and natural approaches such as physical therapy, specialized yoga, acupuncture, essential oils and inflammation-taming foods and herbs.

Factors like leaky gut syndrome, stress and inadequate nutrition can all kick inflammation into overdrive. The right dietary adjustments can go a long way toward putting on the brakes. “Inflammation from compromised gut health can contribute to both rheumatoid and osteoarthritis,” Blum notes. “Abdominal fat releases inflammatory molecules into the joints, so metabolic syndrome should [also] be looked at as a factor in osteoarthritis.” The simplest place to begin is to pay attention to food quality, she says. “Choose whole foods high in nutrients and fiber; eliminate all processed food; read labels to spot hidden sugars and food dyes.” Blum, the founder of the Blum Center for Health, in Rye Brook, New York, initially guides her patients on an elimination diet to find dietary triggers like soy, corn, gluten, dairy, sugar and eggs. She also recommends a diet that is 70 percent plant-based and includes cold-pressed, solvent-free oils such as high-quality olive oil. Blum cautions against nightshade vegetables like eggplant, tomatoes, peppers and white potatoes that can trigger osteoarthritis pain.

in carpal tunnel syndrome and other troublesome conditions. Prevention can go a long way. “Stretching and strengthening are the best ways to prevent injury or pain,” says physiotherapist Kelly Picciurro, of Spring Forward Physical Therapy, in New York City. Picciurro emphasizes exercise for rheumatoid arthritis sufferers. “It’s vital that these patients maintain a certain level of mobility, and [physical therapy] can improve that.” Those with repetitive strain injuries also respond well to gentle yoga postures like tree pose, upward hands and upward fingers. In general, yoga helps upper body muscles support and align the hands, wrists and elbows.

Acupuncture, especially with a focus on postural muscles of the neck and back, can be effective in reducing pain and inflammation. Hot and cold treatments can bring relief for arthritis flare-ups. Circulation and resulting improved cell nutrition can be achieved by employing heat via showers, baths and heating pads. For acute pain, cold from an ice bag or frozen vegetables wrapped in a towel for 20-minute intervals reduces swelling by reducing circulation and dulling pain signals. Pain-reducing herbs such as cat’s claw, aloe vera, green tea, ginger, borage oil and chili pepper can all help fight systemic inflammation. Curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, is also a heavy hitter. Blum recommends at least 1,000 milligrams daily of curcumin that is formulated with pepper or a phospholipid for optimal absorption. A 2018 study published in The Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry found that the combination of curcumin and black pepper can repress inflammation signals in the intestines. Essential oils such as peppermint, eucalyptus, ginger, Roman and German chamomile, lavender and balsam fir are also effective in reducing pain, and have anti-inflammatory properties. A few drops can be added to Epsom salts for a bath or diluted and rubbed onto the area three times daily. Marlaina Donato is an author and composer. Connect at

GUT CHECK Feeding the Immune System

by Julie Peterson

educing stress, sleeping enough, exercising and getting sunlight are all known strategies for improving the body’s ability to protect itself from harm. However, the most important factor in building a rock-star immune system is nutrition. Here is a guide to the care and feeding of the inner fortifications that fight off disease, supporting long-term wellness.

Ground Zero: The Gut

About 70 percent of the immune system resides in the gastrointestinal tract—home to a microbiome that contains trillions of bacteria. It works as a complex ecosystem in which the good bacteria prevent the bad bacteria from taking hold and causing illness or disease. Eating plants promotes the robust growth of that good bacteria. “The GI microbiome evolved closely with our immune systems and under the influence of the plants our ancestors ingested,” says Holly Poole-Kavana, who practices herbal medicine in Washington, D.C. Yet about 90 percent of Americans don’t eat enough fruits and vegetables, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The consequent weakening of the microbiome is a double-edged sword, because the processed foods Americans commonly consume promote the growth of harmful microbes. The 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans indicates that added sugars, saturated fats and sodium eaten by most Americans are far above recommended amounts. This tipping of the scales causes weight gain, toxin buildup and immune system dysfunction.

What Not to Eat

Plants and grains on grocery shelves today are typically processed into bread, cereal, pasta, desserts and snacks, abundant in added sugars, salt, detrimental fats and chemical additives. These altered foods slam the gut’s immune protection and increase the risk of chronic disease. A Czech Republic study on food additives found that gut microbes 40

that fought inflammation were harmed by additives. According to the research, “Permanent exposure of human gut microbiota to even low levels of additives may modify the composition and function of gut microbiota, and thus influence the host’s immune system.” And of course, be wary of sugars. Anything that turns into sugar in the system—think carbs like refined bread products and pasta, not just sweets—is an immune-depressing culprit, says Heather Tynan, a naturopathic doctor at Evergreen Naturopathic, in San Diego. “The level of germ-fighting activity your immune system is able to maintain after a sugary meal decreases for a number of hours.” Saturated fats also alter immune cells, disrupting their functions and triggering inflammation. Getting away from processed food cravings can be a challenge, because the foods provide a temporary energy boost. Dorothy Calimeris, of Oakland, California, a certified health coach and author of three anti-inflammatory cookbooks, suggests that cravings mean the body needs something, but it may be rest or water. “By focusing on eating higher-quality nutrients, we can limit and eventually eliminate the cravings.”

Eat the Rainbow

Fruits and vegetables get their colors from phytochemicals, which provide the human microbiome with antioxidants, minerals and vitamins that keep the gut healthy and help the immune system combat cellular damage. National guidelines suggest Americans eat 10 servings of plants a day, ideally two each from the green, red, white, purple/blue and orange/yellow categories. But data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys show that eight out of 10 people in the U.S. don’t get enough of any color category. “A good strategy is to add one new vegetable a week to your grocery cart,” suggests Canadian nutritionist Lisa Richards, founder of “Blending fruits and vegetables into shakes or smoothies is also an effective way to eat the rainbow for those who are busy.” Whatever goes into the grocery cart should be certified organic, the only sure way to avoid ubiquitous genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in the food chain, which animal studies have linked to immune system damage. Herbs are also helpful to boost the body’s inherent ability to protect itself. Poole-Kavana points to medicinal herbs like astragalus and reishi mushroom, which support immunity and balance gut bacteria; antimicrobial herbs like garlic, thyme and oregano; and elderberry, an anti-inflammatory fruit that boosts the body’s ability to identify and eliminate viruses and bacteria. “The single greatest thing anyone can do for their health is to eat whole foods, including organic vegetables, fruits, high-quality proteins, whole grains and healthy fats,” says Calimeris. TIDYING UP THAT BUCKET LIST Deciding What We Really Want

by Carl Greer

any people have a bucket list of things they want to make sure they experience in this life. Tidying up that bucket list when it no longer reflects a person’s values and deepest desires makes sense. When reviewing our bucket list, we might feel inadequate or embarrassed because we haven’t accomplished what we thought we would. It’s okay if a goal is no longer as exciting as it once was. Guilt, frustration or embarrassment about what’s been lingering on a bucket list for years might be signs that it’s time to dream different dreams. What’s on a bucket list might have been based on a need to prove ourselves to others. If we no longer feel the need to impress people or win their approval, we can move on to new goals. Maybe our family has always talked about traveling to the land of our ancestors as an important thing to do someday, but we don’t feel the same way. We might prefer to travel someplace where we can swim with dolphins or meet people from a completely different culture than our own. Releasing the weight of having a bucket list heavy with other people’s expectations can help us feel much lighter. Maybe those bucket list items still spark some excitement, but it’s time to

change the form of the experience. A goal to write a novel might turn into a goal to write our life story and turn it into a book.

A goal to marry again might become a promise to ourselves to enjoy life with a new romantic partner, regardless of whether that leads to marriage someday. As we go down our bucket list reviewing each item, we can acknowledge which goals still inspire us and which make us feel dispirited. Tidying up a bucket list written in the past can be a good exercise in becoming more conscious of what we want to experience and why—and what dreams we are ready to release—because we have new aspirations now. If we’re spending our time doing what gives us a sense of vitality, happiness and well-being and there is something we haven’t done that generates a feeling of joy and anticipation, it should go at the top of our bucket list—and we should find a way today to start making it happen. of cortisol. These tend to decrease after a workout, but can remain on overdrive if HIIT is not balanced with low-intensity movement. Add jam-packed schedules to the mix, and the side effects of chronically elevated cortisol result not only in longer recovery time, but insomnia, fatigue, low immunity and failure to lose weight, especially around the midsection—a phenomenon that has earned cortisol the nickname “the belly fat hormone”. Balancing HIIT with yoga, Pilates, elliptical training, swimming or walking can help to reset the nervous system and bring the rest of the body back up to speed.

When Workouts Don’t Work

Why Less Is Sometimes More by Marlaina Donato

Cortisol-Conscious Workouts

Mansour works with a naturopath that analyzes her clients’ cortisol and other hormone levels. “One of the first things we focus on is helping the body move into the parasympathetic nervous system and out of the fight-or-flight stress response. One way we do this is by shifting into more relaxed workouts—gentle yoga, beginners’ Pilates class, light cardio or light strength training.” Fitness expert Beth Shaw chose a zealous approach in her own exercise regimen until high cortisol levels unraveled her health. The founder of YogaFit, a yoga teacher training program headquartered in Toronto, she emphasizes moderation. “The key is to not overtrain and to do just enough to adequately stimulate the system.” She recommends 30-to 45-minute cardio sessions and no longer than 45 minutes for weights. “Endorphin release from these two types of exercises should offset any release in cortisol.”

When we exercise may be as important to achieving weight loss and enhancing overall energy as the type of workout we choose, a factor based on circadian rhythm—the body’s biological clock. There are some schools of thought that cortisol is higher in the morning, and therefore this is the best time to exercise, says Mansour, while others believe we should target the mid-afternoon slump. “I advise my clients to pick a time that simply feels good to them.”

Mixing It Up

Hopping on a bike, going for a brisk walk or catching the waves on a surfboard can provide a great low-intensity, steady-state (LISS) cardiovascular workout, which aims for a low level of exertion for a long, continuous period. Repetitive motion for 30 to 45 minutes not only helps to balance cortisol levels, but according to a 2014 Australian study published in the Journal of Obesity, it evens out fat distribution in overweight individuals. LISS also nudges the body to use fat as fuel, rather than taking valuable glycogen from the muscles. Yoga and Pilates classes, though distinctly different, offer valuable benefits. “If cortisol backlash is an issue, you definitely want to work with someone who knows the anatomy and physiology of breathing,” says Tori Brown, owner of The Pilates Room & Antigravity Studio, in Ithaca, New York. “By learning proper breathing techniques, practitioners are able to downregulate the nervous system into a more parasympathetic state, which leads to better focus, lower heart rate, better digestion, more optimal cortisol levels and improved sleep patterns. All of this leads to more focused workouts that build muscle while creating less stress on the nervous system.” Mansour suggests simple walking for stress-busting alternative cardio. “Brisk walking three times a week for 20 to 30 minutes is great to help reduce stress.” Marlaina Donato is an author and composer. s dogs and cats get older, they may slow down or have other physical issues. Some experience cognitive decline which resembles Alzheimer’s disease in humans. It presents differently in every pet and can include numerous symptoms that begin gradually, sometimes just seeming like quirky behavior instead of a disease. Cognitive dysfunction syndrome (CDS) can affect dogs or cats, and there is currently no known cause or prevention. Progress has been made on Alzheimer’s research in humans, with neurologists discovering that plaque buildup in the brain does not cause the disease: That is the immune system’s response to the disease. Necropsies on dogs with CDS have shown similar plaque buildup in the brain. “Unfortunately, little research has been done regarding this condition, so we can only hope to use human studies to gather information that will help our affected pets,” says Dennis W. Thomas, DVM, a holistic veterinarian in Spokane, Washington, and author of Whole-Pet Healing: A

Heart-to-Heart Guide to Connecting with and Caring for Your Animal Companion. With no test available for CDS, pets are diagnosed by excluding medical and behavioral problems that can resemble having the ailment.

Signs to Watch For

Issues that could point to CDS include: n Confusion or disorientation: standing in a corner, difficulty walking through doorways, walking in circles or trouble following familiar routes n Decreased activity: sleeping excessively, seeming withdrawn, lack of grooming, loss of interest in toys, people or food n Restlessness, anxiety or compulsiveness: waking often at night, whining or yowling, new fears, pacing or constantly licking n Attention seeking: wanting to be near humans and showing high distress when left alone n Incontinence: soiling the house after previously being house-trained

n Irritability or aggression: growling/hissing or biting without cause These troubles could also be indicative of a treatable condition, such as a urinary tract infection or an injury, so it’s essential to have the pet examined.

Caring for the Patient While CDS will continue to alter brain and nerve function, there is some hope for pet lovers faced with the diagnosis in the early stages. Thomas recommends a natural approach that includes diet modification, filtered water, vitamin and herbal supplements, and eliminating stress. Diffusing calming essential oils can be helpful for dogs (and humans), but is not recommended for cats. Kathryn Sarpong, DVM, a veterinarian at Metro Paws Animal Hospital, in Dallas, also recommends dietary changes to her patients. “Recent studies have shown that medium-chain triglycerides may be helpful, and they are in some senior pet foods. Supplementation of melatonin may help with sleep-wake cycles.” Anxiety often becomes part of the animal’s new normal, but pet parents can help cats and dogs with this by keeping them as active as possible, introducing new toys and interacting. “Keep your dog’s mind active by providing games and opportunities for play. Daily walks provide not only exercise, but also mental stimulation,” says Lisa Lunghofer, Ph.D., executive director of The Grey Muzzle Organization, in Washington, D.C. Pets with anxiety or pain may benefit from cannabidiol (CBD) products. Clarissa Valdes, a homemaker in Homestead, Florida, has a 15-year-old cat with CDS. Minini would wander around in the house, looking lost. Then, the all-night howling sessions began. “We started to worry that she was in pain,” says Valdes. However, a veterinarian diagnosed CDS. “The vet suggested medication, but I wanted to go in a natural direction,” says Valdes, who started Minini on CBD oil. The cat finally slept through the night. A month in, Minini is doing better overall. With time, CDS patients may lose hearing or sight in addition to experiencing a progression of symptoms. “Make sure your home is predictable and safe,” says Lunghofer. Use gates to close off stairs or move furniture or other items that could be hazardous.

Prevention on the Horizon

Because inflammation caused by an inappropriate diet is the underlying problem of most chronic diseases in pets, Thomas believes that prevention for CDS is possible. “Feeding a noninflammatory, species-specific, balanced diet that is fresh and not heat-processed is critical,” he says. In addition, he advises his patients get probiotics, digestive enzymes, omega-3s and antioxidant nutrients. Vaccinations, when necessary, should not contain heavy metal preservatives. “The goal is to keep the gut and immune systems healthy, avoid toxins that affect the nervous system and minimize environmental stress.” Julie Peterson writes from her home in rural Wisconsin.
