Publisher’s Letter

Spring is an ideal season for traveling, as nature awakens with radiant colors, warmth, and sunshine. Travel can also offer a variety of benefits for both our mental and physical health. It’s an invitation to escape from routine, encounter new destinations, embrace unique experiences, and re-invigorate our spirits. This month’s issue of Natural Awakenings is all about travel, so embark on a journey with us to enrich and nourish your holistic well-being!

Let’s begin with our feature article, “Sustainable Travel: Wanderlust with the Earth in Mind.” Whether you dream of relaxation or thirst for adventure, it’s also important to follow culturally sensitive and environmentally conscious practices while traveling. This article will offer you practical strategies on how to become a more sustainable tourist, respect the local customs and climates, and immerse yourself in mindful, authentic enjoyment.

Next, we’ll venture into the realm of “Farm Vacations” to explore how American agritourism has taken root in this post-COVID era. As more urbanites continue to embrace the slower, quieter pace of country living, a new branch of tourism has emerged in recent years—overnight stays on rural farms and ranches. These immersive experiences include assisting with hands-on chores, learning about food systems, and contributing to nature conservation efforts.

Finally, we must also consider the beneficial impacts of travel on young minds as well. This month’s “Healthy Kids” article will discuss the value of teaching children to explore beyond their classrooms. A recent poll from the Family Travel Association found that 80 percent of respondents think travel instills a more nuanced global outlook in children, while 67 percent agree it inspires children to become interested in other cultures. In other words, traveling is an educational tool that can help foster curiosity and empathy in the next generation.

As always, this is just a snapshot of all the wonders you’ll unpack inside our latest issue. Thank you for joining us for another month of adventure, wellness, and inspiration. We will see you right back here next month—and until then, Bon Voyage!

Dr. Anna Baker, DOM, invites you to join her interactive anti-aging seminars via Zoom on April 10 and April 19th, both at 1:30 p.m. She will showcase her Faces by Dr. Anna acupuncture facelift and her muscle retightening Pearl Cream by Dr. Anna. Please contact the Pearl Cream by Dr. Anna store to access the meeting ID number. If you cannot attend a seminar live, Dr. Anna will send you a link to watch at your convenience.

Dr. Anna performs a unique type of acupuncture facelift that she invented. The muscles of the face and neck are progressively retightened to retrace the steps that aging took. An initial package of 10 treatments is required, and the results last for 18 months before you will need a one-treatment touchup to maintain the lift.

In these seminars, Dr. Anna will show photographed results on people of all ages. She will also discuss her proprietary Pearl Cream by Dr Anna that offers the same muscle retightening as her acupuncture facelift in a slower, more gradual process. Her Pearl Cream is an anti-aging serum made from real pearls and Chinese herbs without any preservatives. Pearl Cream by Dr. Anna is also available as a muscle tightening body lotion, a men’s anti-aging line and a sports performance line.

Location: 2721 Mall Dr., Sarasota. Store hours: Monday–Friday, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. To access the meeting ID, call 941-9212662. For more information, visit FacesByDrAnna.com and PearlCreamByDrAnna.com.

Experience Healthy Weight Loss and Lifestyle Habits with Best Medicine

Effective weight loss is a common goal for many, and Best Medicine is offering a prescribed oral lozenge form of the weight loss medication Ozempic (a GLP-1 receptor agonist or semaglutide). While the weekly injectable version of this medication is quite expensive—about $1,000 per month, according to GoodRx—the daily lozenge form costs one quarter of that price.

In order to maintain these weight loss results, it’s also important to consider holistic lifestyle factors such as nutritious eating habits, consistent exercise, and hormonal balance. Best Medicine can teach you how to integrate these healthy behaviors into your normal routine as well. To further empower your wellness journey, Dr. Carol Roberts is also offering a free educational class on the first Wednesday of each month.

This month’s topic is “Maintaining Brain Health Throughout Life,” and the topic for May will be “Living a Long and Healthy Life.” Starting in April, the location for all 2024 classes will be Unity Church in Sarasota, from 2–4 p.m.

Location: 3023 Proctor Rd., Sarasota. For more information and to reserve a seat in this month’s class, call 941-404-8030. You can also watch a live stream online through Facebook.

Crystal Cleansing Techniques with Wild Ginger Apothecary

If you just picked out a stack of stone bracelets and a pile of tumbles, you’ll want to cleanse them before you start using them. Below are some effective methods for cleansing crystals that we recommend here at Wild Ginger Apothecary.

Sunlight is one of the easiest and most abundant resources we have access to here in Florida. Just keep in mind that quartz pieces should sit in the shade for cleansing to avoid cracks, and amethyst will lose its color if exposed to direct sunlight for too long.

Moonlight is another most common way to cleanse crystals. This method is entirely safe if it’s not raining or too humid outside. Full moonlight is the most powerful illumination to charge crystals beneath, but they should not be left out overnight if the weather is inclement.

Selenite is a high-vibrational crystal that will recharge the other crystals around it. If you own a selenite plate, dish, or tray, just place the other crystals on it for about 24 hours. Smoke (such as incense, white sage, or Palo Santo) has also been used for millennia to cleanse and purify. Cleansing sprays are also an option if you can’t burn sage or Palo Santo.

Most crystals are found underground (or on rocks covered with soil), which means that most crystals can be buried as a form of cleansing. Just be mindful if the soil is wet, as crystals should not be left in water for a lengthy period of time.

Wild Ginger Apothecary location: 6557 Superior Ave., Sarasota. Hours: Monday–Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call 941-312-5630 or visit WildGingerApothecary.com.

Greg Martins feels that he was killed as a Union soldier in the Civil War. Throughout his life he felt an aversion to learning about the Civil War, but now he understands why. The mortal injury that killed Martins in this war became apparent about a year ago when he began to experience significant pain and inflammation in his thoracic spine area.

Both he and his orthopedic doctor were mystified about the cause of the inflammation in his vertebrae. The doctor said it was highly unusual for Martins’ condition to occur without an injury, but his pain was so significant that he had to receive numerous pain killer injections aimed at the vertebrae for several months.

Because this health issue appeared out of nowhere, Martins reasoned that it could have roots in a past life. Having used the Akashic Records for decades, he began to check his own records, only to find that he had been stabbed with a sword through his back in the Civil War. Martins then worked with his

Embrace Healing and Personal Growth this April

This month, a total solar eclipse will occur on April 8, at 2:21 p.m., 19 degrees of Aries. This natural phenomenon can be seen as an invitation to reclaim inner balance and reset your personal compass for 2024. The solar eclipse (along with a lunar eclipse that occurred on March 25, at five degrees of Libra) will usher in cosmic shifts in relationships, challenges, and opportunities for healing or personal growth.

There will be many who face hardships this month, so if you encounter an unexpected challenge or area of unresolved hurt, please seek assistance from wise therapists and healers. Chiron, an asteroid known as “the wounded healer,” will join this eclipse in April. Chiron is located geographically close to the United States, which creates even more opportunities for healing. Aries is a bold, fiery sign that calls you back to a healthier way of living. Listen to your own inner light, embrace the journey, and give yourself compassion.

If you are ready to look at your own path, contact Catherine Rosenbaum. Along with her guidance teams, she will help you navigate this cycle and offer new insights into your personal destiny blueprints this month.

To book an appointment, call 941-518-5309 or visit CatherineRosenbaum.net.

Why Burning Sage is So Important

Burning sage is a traditional ritual that cleanses the environment and removes negative energy. This practice began in Native America, and has penetrated across cultures due to its medicinal and metaphysical benefits. Here is some “sage” advice from Elysian Fields

Studies show that sage has antimicrobial properties, which can ward off bacteria, fungi, and viruses with 94% efficiency for up to 24 hours. Sage helps neutralize positively-charged ions that are harmful to the human body and make energy around our aura stagnant. Removing these ions can help you feel lighter, both spiritually and emotionally.

Burning sage can also reduce the emotional impact of past traumas, which creates more room for peace, calm and spiritual connection to take root. Bathing in sage cleanses through water, while burning sage purifies through fire. Research indicates that sage can be used as a remedy to help manage anxiety, depression, or mood swings, since it contains elements that activate certain pain and stress brain receptors. Finally, burning classic garden sage can promote more restorative and refreshing sleep quality.

Here are just a few examples of when to sage in order to cleanse your aura and nurture your sense of well-being. Sage before you move into a new house, launch a new business, or host a large event. Sage after a breakup with a romantic partner. Safe when someone in your home or family is sick. Sage when you experience tension or stress. Finally, sage whenever you come into contact with negativity from others. Contact Elysian Fields to schedule a house or office clearing, or to purchase your own sage.

The Genius of Empathy by Dr. Judith

According to New York Times bestselling author and psychiatrist Judith Orloff, M.D., empathy is a superpower that can transform your life, your relationships, and the world. In her new book The Genius of Empathy: Practical Skills to Heal Your Sensitive Self, Your Relationships and the World (with foreword by The Dalai Lama), Dr. Orloff shows readers how to ignite and embody the emotional intelligence of empathy as a daily healing practice.

The Genius of Empathy demonstrates ways to tap into the gift of one’s sensitivities without being drained. Readers will learn how to soothe their nervous system and stop absorbing other people’s emotions. It’s a practical, action-driven guide for highly sensitive people and for those who want to develop empathy as a healing skill. The book is divided into three sections. It begins with the magic of empathy to find greater self-love and healing—including from trauma. Subsequent chapters teach readers how to apply empathy to their relationships, communities and the world. Exploring each chapter’s practices, readers will learn the art of empathic listening, how to stop overthinking, and the importance of setting healthy boundaries and showing loving detachment to prevent overwhelm and compassion fatigue.

Throughout the book Orloff uses insights from neuroscience, psychology and energy medicine to teach readers how to use and amplify their empathy without feeling overwhelmed. The book also offers tips on how to prevent empathy burnout, techniques to enhance self-empathy and healthy giving, how to use empathic communication and leadership skills at work and home, how to show empathy for others—even when you’re not in agreement, and how to protect oneself from those with “empathy-deficient disorder” such as narcissists, sociopaths and bullies.

Each chapter has compelling anecdotes of how Orloff’s patients enhanced their lives with this book’s techniques. “Cultivating empathy is a kind of peaceful warrior training,” says Orloff. “You will learn to be both strong and loving, neither a pushover nor rigid. Wherever you are in your life, this book can meet you there and lift you higher.”

Judith Orloff, M.D., is a New York Times bestselling author with the NEW book The Genius of Empathy. She has also written The Empath’s Survival Guide and Thriving as an Empath, which offers daily self-care tools for sensitive people. Dr. Orloff integrates the pearls of conventional medicine with cutting edge knowledge of intuition, empathy, energy medicine and spirituality. She will host a global online webinar about empathic healing techniques based on The Genius of Empathy on April 20 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. PDT. To get a free empathy eBook and empathy gift collection with purchase of book visit DrJudithOrloff.com.

Are You Receiving Enough Vitamin D?

Many of us know that Vitamin D is important for our health, but how can we determine whether we need more of it—and if so, how much? Moreover, what should we do if supplementation doesn’t work? In this article, I will unpack why we need Vitamin D, how to measure and consume it, and why some of us might not respond to Vitamin D supplements.

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble nutrient that has an active role in many health functions—most notably, bone strength. Vitamin D can also reduce the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, Type-2 diabetes, respiratory infections, depression, dementia, cancer, and many auto-immune diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis, Lupus, Hashimoto’s, and Rheumatoid Arthritis.

The simplest method of vitamin D consumption is through the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. When UV light hits our skin, a process called photo-biomodulation activates vitamin D, so it can begin to

perform its many functions. The problem is there are many variables that determine how much vitamin D the body can produce during sun exposure. Some of these factors include our age, skin color, where we live, the time of year, length of exposure, amount of skin covering, and type of sunscreens. Vitamin D can also be obtained to a lesser degree from foods like fatty fish, beef liver, egg yolks, and mushrooms.

Vitamin D levels can also be influenced by inadequate vitamin A and magnesium intake (which many of us are deficient in), as well as gut, liver, and kidney function. Another overlooked factor that can cause low vitamin D levels is a genetic defect in how the body activates or hydroxylates Vitamin D in the liver and kidneys. We can measure this with blood tests by looking at the 25, OH Vitamin D3 levels and the 1.25 OH Calcitriol levels. This will determine whether the body can activate Vitamin D both in the liver and kidneys.

When looking at these lab values to assess vitamin D levels, medical physicians will often consider “normal” ranges to be between 30-100 ng/ml. However, when evaluated through the lens of a functional medicine provider—with the goal to maintain bone,

heart, brain and immune health—we want both the 25, OH Vitamin D3 and the 1.25 OH Calcitriol to be in a range of 60-100ng/ ml, with Calcitriol equal to or greater than the 25-OH D3 level.

When we find a person deficient in Vitamin D, this usually means they will need to supplement with Vitamin D3 for the rest of their life. I often hear from patients that once their Vitamin D is within a normal range, they are told not to supplement anymore, but this often causes them to become deficient again.

So, what is the long-term dose a person needs to take to maintain optimal Vitamin D levels? This will often require frequent and consistent testing to see how the body is absorbing and activating vitamin D. Everyone’s need for Vitamin D3 is different, so the answer is not onesize-fits-all. Some might find it difficult to keep their Vitamin D at optimal levels due to genetic variants, medications, vitamin A or magnesium deficiencies, and infections such as Epstein Barr, Cytomegalovirus, or Lyme’s Disease.

When supplementing with Vitamin D3, it’s also important to take it along with Vitamins K2. This is not to be confused with K1, the clotting vitamin. Vitamin K2 works with Vitamin D3 in both the absorption and distribution of calcium. While Vitamin D3 aids with absorbing calcium into the body, Vitamin K2 controls where calcium is deposited to make sure it enters bones, not the arteries, kidneys, or other soft tissues.

Vitamin D is one of the most important nutrients for optimal health, and while most of us are deficient in vitamin D, achieving the ideal levels will differ for everyone. Testing for vitamin D frequently and working with a functional medicine practitioner to reach the correct levels is a powerful way to prevent or manage chronic illness.

Transport Yourself to Transformative Wellness:

Q&A with Objects of Magic

We are saturated with over-stimulation in our daily routines. From the buzz of a smartphone, to the ping of an email inbox, to the alert of a meeting reminder, our lives hum with the noisy undercurrent of activities or distractions.

This constant, frenetic energy can take a serious toll on both our mental and physical wellness—but that’s where Objects of Magic comes in. A trip to this holistic farm and retreat center, nestled among the bucolic landscape of Myakka, will invite you to reconnect with nature and reclaim a sense of rootedness within yourself.

In this month’s edition of The Community Spotlight, I am thrilled to welcome in Gaëlle Wizenberg, owner of the Objects of Magic Farm & Retreat. I hope you’ll enjoy our conversation as she unpacks all the healing benefits this unique destination has to offer.

Natural Awakenings: Can you describe the Objects of Magic Farm & Retreat? What ambiance will visitors find there, and what inspired you to choose the location of Myakka?

Gaëlle Wizenberg: The drive out to Myakka is a meditative experience. The nature here is soothing, and our Farm stands out from the main road. The main house was built from

Pecky Cypress wood in 1941 by the Manatee Sheriff. It is a simple structure with a long screen porch that rests on eight acres of lush forest and oak trees.

On these grounds, we cultivated a flower and vegetable garden, and we’ve also been restoring the house to its historic glory. Between the tranquil scenery and the welcoming atmosphere, our retreat center is a place to form community and share life.

When I first began to offer mini-retreats in Sarasota, it became clear that many attendees were craving a peaceful sanctuary to immerse themselves in nature. When we escape the noises or distractions of our daily routines, our inner vibration changes. I set off on a mission to facilitate this type of environment, and Myakka presented itself to me.

NA: What retreats do you plan to host at the Farm & Retreat over the spring and summer months? Can you set the scene and summarize what these retreats have to offer?

Wizenberg: I will be in El Salvador this month, as I am currently in the process of creating a retreat center and cacao farm in this beautiful country, which will be an extension of the retreats we offer here in Florida. But once I return, Objects of Magic has many exciting and inspirational events to look forward to, starting with our New Moon Retreat on May 5. This special event will focus on Ayurvedic wellness, led by Dr. Chari, a practitioner of this ancient wisdom. Ayurveda is a holistic healing system that will nurture balance, promote vitality, increase longevity, and transform your well-being. Ayurveda can be tailored to our own unique mind-body constitution, and Dr. Chari will teach you how to embark on this practice with actionable insights and self-care rituals.

Unlock the secrets of Ayurvedic nutrition to cook meals that elevate your dosha (inter-

nal energetic patterns) to enhance digestion. Then, explore the connection between Indian Classical Dance and Ayurveda to learn how movement, rhythm, and expression are intricately linked to wellness. Finally, dive into the therapeutic benefits of mudras (hand gestures in yoga and Ayurveda) to balance energies, relieve ailments, and promote holistic health.

NA: Where does your passion to cultivate an inspirational atmosphere immersed in natural beauty stem from? How can venturing outside the normal routines of life and communing with nature create a deeper sense of physical, mental, and spiritual wellness?

Wizenberg: I was fortunate to grow up on a sailboat and live in the Caribbean islands until I was 17. I slept outside in a hammock under the moon and stars with no neighbors, computers, or highway noises around me. Because of that experience, nature has always been a calming presence in my life. I feel this whenever I head out to Myakka.

Having explored the entire globe, I find the pace of large urban areas to be mentally exhausting, but when I step out of all that chaos and enter a peaceful low-emission zone, my whole being starts to relax. We can either heal or burden our energetic frequencies, so it’s important to recharge and center ourselves in the harmony of nature.

NA: How do you hope to grow the Magic Farm & Retreat in 2024—and well into the future? Are there any new, exciting plans in the works that you can share with us?

Wizenberg: Our farm is a private retreat that we open to the community for special events. Spending time here is a memorable, restorative experience. We are currently refurbishing a few cabins onsite to allow for a quiet and healing escape. We also plan to offer small events for local healers to gather, as well as intimate weddings or other events.

The expansion to El Salvador will enable us to curate even more unique, diverse experiences in the future, such as cacao ceremonies, for instance. Wellness is about simplicity —returning to the basics of what truly matters in life. We look forward to facilitating all kinds of simple but meaningful events, both here in Florida and in El Salvador too!

Objects of Magic Farm & Retreat is located at 4900 Coker Gully Road, Myakka City. For more information about all the upcoming events at this retreat center, visit ObjectsOfMagic.com.

Exploring the Factors of Neck Pain Relief

Chronic neck pain can affect someone’s quality of life in a lot of ways. Whether it causes a poor quality of sleep, difficulty looking for traffic, or general daily irritation, neck pain is one of the most frequent issues I see in my office. Many different factors can be at the root of this pain, but most of these causes will respond to the right treatment.

A patient I will refer to as Melanie is one example of how various factors cause neck pain, as well as how relief comes with the right kind of care. Melanie had severe neck pain from whiplash caused by a recent car accident. However, x-rays also showed that she had been suffering from severe arthritis long before the accident, even though she was not aware of this. Her neck pain was so disabling that she had started to contemplate surgery. She underwent a course of treatment at our office, consisting of fascial release therapy, joint stretching, and rehabilitation exercises. Melanie’s pain improved from an average of nine out of 10 (where 10 is the worst imaginable) to two out of 10. She was able to return to work, and no surgery was required. Several issues contributed to her pain—as is common with neck problems— so let’s examine some of those underlying issues.

Arthritis

It’s a frequent assumption that arthritis is a major cause of neck pain. However, what many don’t know is that research shows only a small correlation between how much arthritis you have and how much pain you might feel in your neck.

That’s because the same underlying causes of “wear and tear” arthritis can also result in pain, these two issues are not always interconnected. Muscular weakness, joint instability, and uneven muscular tension can cause both pain and arthritis simultaneously—or either one independently. In other words, just because you have arthritis and pain, this doesn’t mean arthritis caused the pain. More likely, there’s a deeper root cause. In my experience, most arthritic changes only lead to stiffness or mild achiness in the neck.

Despite severe arthritis, Melanie had no neck pain until her accident. Of course, the arthritis could have weakened her neck, causing her injury and pain reaction to be more severe. Her relief,

however, was not a result of treating arthritis itself. We’ll discuss this below when we look at the connective tissue called fascia.

Posture and Pain

Another issue that relates to neck pain is posture. Many neck pain sufferers also have a forward head posture. This means their ears are positioned forward, rather than centered over the shoulders. The restrictions that cause forward head posture can contribute to neck pain as well. In fact, for every inch that the head is forward of the shoulders, this unnatural position will multiply tension at the base of the neck by 10.

While postural issues often require professional care, some can easily be corrected with ergonomics. For instance, is your computer screen at eye level? If it is too low, too high, or positioned off to the side, this can lead to neck pain.

Whether or not these factors lead to pain is contingent on the frequency of use. Occasional computer use is not usually a problem. However, I have seen patients who use a computer for hours on a daily basis, and looking at the screen in a hunched position for this much time each day will often result in pain.

While postural issues can activate neck pain, not everyone with poor neck posture will suffer from neck pain. For instance, some of my patients believe that mental or emotional stress is a cause of their neck pain. In my experience, stress amplifies the extent of pain or brings it to the surface, but it isn’t the underlying cause.

When the physical cause is dealt with correctly, similar levels of stress will no longer cause pain. In Melanie’s case, stressful days exacerbated her pain, but after successful treatment, stress had minimal effect on her pain levels.

Fascia and Pain

The most common issue that I find at the root of my patients’ neck pain and arthritis is fascia restriction. Abnormal tension, stiffness, or distortion in this fibrous connective tissue can alter muscle tension, joint alignment, and joint stability. This results in stiffness and pain, leading to the tissue breakdown that results in arthritis.

Fascia restrictions are frequently caused by prior injuries, postural stress, or repetitive motion injuries. While mental or emotional stress itself is not a direct cause, the muscle tension that it brings can lead to stiffness or restriction in fascia.

Restricted fascia is most easily treated with gentle hands-on compression techniques, such as Residual Strain Therapy. Densified fascia—where the connective tissue is thicker, less pliable, and tender to the touch—is most effectively treated with pulsing pressure or specialized stretch techniques. Restricted fascia is not the same as a muscle knot or “trigger point.” In fact, trigger points in muscle are usually caused by fascia restriction, so when the fascia is released, one or several nearby trigger points will disappear.

The results that come from treating the fascia are due to improved proprioception, or “position sense.” These nerve endings contribute to the position sense we use for coordinated motions, and these exist within the fascia. When we correct restricted fascia, we also improve position sense, which enhances muscle coordination, joint alignment, and stability.

This can make all the difference for a problem such as neck pain. For Melanie, releasing fascia restriction was the key to her lasting pain relief. However, while fascial restrictions are a likely cause of arthritis, treating the restrictions will not reverse arthritis, as this condition is a permanent tissue change. Still, I have seen many patients whose arthritis stopped worsening after a comprehensive and successful fascia treatment.

Complete Neck Care

In addition to fascia release and ergonomic improvements, other therapies can also relieve neck pain. Stiffness or pain can lead to weakness in the neck muscles which, in turn, can exacerbate this pain. Learning how to safely strengthen the neck is vital in this case.

Sometimes whole-body posture affects the neck, so you might need to strengthen the core muscles—or even the hips—in order to relieve postural stress in the neck.  In some cases, when there is significant arthritis or disk degeneration in the spine, traction or decompression therapy can offer relief as well. This can often be done at home with inexpensive equipment, upon the recommendation of a qualified healthcare practitioner.

Each case of neck pain is unique, and no two sufferers will require the exact same treatment. However, as a general rule, I find it effective to change lifestyle habits first (computer screen height, for instance), treat fascia restriction next, then strengthen your muscles once the joints and tissues are working correctly. For most, this is a successful formula to ease that “pain in the neck” and achieve the lasting relief you need.

Essential Wellness Tips for Healthy Eco Travel

As the seasons transition from the vibrancy of spring into the warmth of summer, our thoughts naturally turn towards travel and exploration. In my practice, I have observed an interest among both patients and colleagues in eco-travel. This is not merely a trend—it’s a profound shift towards experiencing new destinations in a manner that nourishes the soul, while respecting our planet’s delicate, valuable ecosystems.

Exploring diverse, foreign lands can offer unparalleled opportunities for growth and learning. But it carries a unique set of challenges, particularly to our health. The stress of adapting to new cultures or languages— not to mention the physical strain of travel itself—can tax our immune systems more than we might realize.

Essential Health Strategies for the Eco-Conscious Traveler

Hydration: This cannot be overstated.

Optimal hydration is the cornerstone of physical health, especially in unfamiliar climates. I counsel my patients to aim for at least half an ounce of water per pound of body weight each day. But if you are outside in the heat in the summer, increase this water intake by about another liter.

Moderation in Alcohol Consumption: Some travelers want to enjoy alcoholic beverages while on vacation, but moderation is advisable. Exceeding two ounces per day can strain the body, impacting both the immune system and overall health.

Core Supplements: A regimen of multivitamins, vitamin D, and fish oil forms the bedrock of nutritional support. These vital nutrients offer a spectrum of benefits, from supporting immune function to enhancing mood state and cognitive health.

Vitamin C with Bioflavonoids: My personal travel kit always includes Bio C 1:1. The synergy between vitamin C and bioflavonoids is a powerful ally against inflammation, while benefiting respiratory and vascular health. Vitamin C can also

increase T-cell function, a critical aspect of our viral defense mechanism.

Probiotic Support: Dietary habits will often shift during travel, so take additional precautions to maintain gastrointestinal function. Probiomax DF is my probiotic of choice—its well-researched strains help nurture a healthy microbiome.

Passive Immunity: I often recommend IG 26 DF, a supplement that comes from hyperimmune eggs. This product offers protection against a wide variety of pathogens, and is especially beneficial when consuming uncertain water quality abroad.

Herbal Immune Boosters: Viragraphis is another staple in my travel health arsenal. This blend of Andrographis, licorice root, and Indigowoad will bolster immune function, combat inflammation, and maintain respiratory health. This makes it a prudent choice for immunity enhancement.

Eco travel presents a unique opportunity to reconnect with the natural world in a way that is both enriching and respectful. As we embark on these journeys, let us do so with a commitment to our well-being and the health of the environments we visit. By adopting a mindful approach to our travel preparations, we not only ensure our own wellness, but also contribute to the vitality of the communities and natural landscapes that welcome us.

Dr. Havey has created a comprehensive wellness package to simplify maintaining your health while traveling. This kit includes all the supplements mentioned to support your immune function and ensure a healthful journey. Travelers can enjoy their experiences, knowing their well-being is taken care of with quality, doctor-advised solutions. Sustainable Travel

Wanderlust With the Earth in Mind

Whether travel is enjoyed for much-needed relaxation, cultural immersion or the opportunity to volunteer in an eco-program spotlighting permaculture or farming, journeying to places far and near greatly enriches our human experience. During these environmentally critical times, our travels may carry a hefty price tag that the planet can no longer afford. This does not mean we need to sacrifice adventure. Every traveler can make a difference not only for the Earth but for the local communities they visit.

According to the World Travel and Tourism Council, 8.1 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions can be attributed to travel and tourism. Being in the know and taking more responsibility for our environmental impact can be easier than commonly assumed, all the while inviting unexpected enjoyment.

Amanda Reiser, a global sustainable tourism specialist based in Pennsylvania, encourages her clients to consider the three pillars of sustainable tourism: environment, economy and equity. “We all can play a part in fostering sustainable tourism and creating a more sustainable world," she explains, noting that a green-minded approach benefits not only the traveler but also the destination. "Ask yourself: Does my participation in this activity create a negative impact on the natural environment? Are there any actions to help reduce my environmental impact?"

A traveler’s footprint extends to the socio-cultural fabric of the destination, too. Reiser reminds travelers, “You may be in your destination for only a week, but the people who live there year-round feel the impacts of visitors every day, for better or worse.” By respecting local traditions and

engaging locals in a respectful and inclusive manner, tourists can contribute positively to the cultural integrity of the communities they visit.

GREENER HORIZONS

Instead of hitting all the trendy, transportation-reliant sights, opt to slow down and stay in one place for a longer period. This not only invites a richer, deeper experience but minimizes the need to hop onto another plane or bus. To support the local economy of a desired destination, buy locally produced items and book small, private hotels and inns, rather than international chains. Dining at locally owned eateries supports small business while giving travelers higher-quality fare and a more authentic cultural experience.

When planning a trip, contemplate the many treasures of domestic travel or choose a location that is not drowning in overtourism. The influx of tourists can significantly strain fragile ecosystems, deplete resources and disrupt the lives of local communities. Consider destinations that can be crossed via boat, train or bus, such as the New York-Montreal border or clusters of countries in Europe or Southeast Asia.

PACKING WITH PURPOSE

Making small choices even when packing a suitcase goes a long way. Bring eco-friendly sunscreen and opt for brands that avoid chemicals harmful to coral reefs and tropical environments. Pack a cloth tote bag for daily excursions and a reusable water bottle to avoid single-use plastics. Remember that by using plastic containers more than once, we reduce the amount of waste that is released over time. Try not to overpack— bring only the most necessary items, preferably those that can be recycled, reused and disposed of properly.

SOJOURNING WITH SAVVY

To avoid getaway glitches, become acquainted with local laws and regulations. When planning a fishing excursion, for example, identify the legally designated fishing spots and avoid harming endangered species, which are heavily protected under national and international regulations. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) offers an interactive map to show where legal fishing areas are by state (fws.gov/fishing/

28 Sarasota/Manatee Edition www.nasrq.com Feature Story

map). Historical resources should also be taken into consideration. For instance, the Florida Keys require special permits for cultural, maritime, heritage and archeological explorations, including snorkeling expeditions of ancient shipwrecks and other unique, underwater sites.

It is always best to ask whether a destination is a naturally protected sanctuary or requires special permits. The FSW is a good reference site for information on activities in national wildlife refuges and the endangered animals that live there. To enjoy these areas to their fullest, make sure to find a knowledgeable local tour guide that understands the laws of the land.

Traveling consciously involves personal responsibility toward the environment through individual actions. “You can make a difference,” says David Knight, a professor of tourism management at Colorado State University. “Regenerative travel is not just leaving things the way you found them. It’s a matter of giving more than you take.”

DON’T BE GREENWASHED

Greenwashing is a corrupt practice by companies that claim to support conscious tourism but fail to live up to their claims. Vetting businesses when planning a trip means delving into third-party research and reports to check the fine print. Before booking, make sure the ecolodge or eco-touring company being considered has a legitimate certification on their website. The Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) sets global standards and provides accreditations for destination managers, hotels and tour operators. There are also certifying groups in specific locations, such as the Sustainable Tourism Association of Hawaii, and others that are accredited by the GSTC, like Preferred by Nature.

For tourism operations that have not been certified, the onus is on the traveler. “Check with the local chambers of commerce. They should know who is working toward sustainability and can direct you to those aligned with what you are looking for,” says Claudia Gil Arroyo, an agricultural agent for the Rutgers University Cooperative Extension, in New Jersey. “If a tour operator or destination does not have a clear goal on how they’re contributing to the environment, it is unlikely that they are actually green.”

For tourism to be truly sustainable, it must also be economically viable for local communities. Economic sustainability ensures that tourism dollars benefit the local economy, creating fair wages, local sourcing and community empowerment, and allowing communities to thrive while preserving their cultural heritage. When traveling, support local, eco-friendly businesses that provide sustainable products.

A good example is agritourism—a vacation stay at a participating local farm—which can provide exciting, hands-on learning experiences. “Get out there. Look for your local growers and check out the services and activities they offer,” says Gil Arroyo. “People have this idea that agritourism is just picking your pumpkins and that’s it, and there’s so much more that can be done at a farm.”

ECO-FRIENDLY NORTH AMERICAN PARKS

North America is home to many national parks—63 in the United States and 48 in Canada. Here are five exceptional examples that provide a sustainable, eco-friendly vacation experience.

Yellowstone National Park is known for its geothermal features, including the famous Old Faithful geyser. It also has a diverse range of wildlife, including grizzly bears, wolves and herds of bison. This U.S. park has implemented sustainable practices such as renewable energy installations, waste management programs and educational initiatives to promote conservation.

Great Bear Rainforest is a temperate locale on the central and northern coasts of British Columbia, Canada. It is home to a variety of wildlife, including the rare Kermode bear, also known as the spirit bear. The park works closely with First Nations communities, implementing conservation measures to protect biodiversity and support eco-conscious businesses.

Farm Vacations

American Agritourism Grows in Post-Pandemic Times

Long a staple of European travel, agritourism is growing in popularity in the United States, as concrete-weary urbanites seek out a taste of country living and a way to support small-scale farms. The concept broadly covers any activity linking agriculture with tourism, and it takes as many forms as there are farms. Farm-stay options run the gamut from helping with farm chores like feeding chickens and collecting eggs to structured classes on weaving, soap making or beekeeping.

“Living in towns and cities, most Americans are very disconnected from nature and agriculture. Farm stays are helping to make an important urban-rural connection,” says Scottie Jones, founder of Farm-stay USA, an association connecting travelers with working farms and ranches that offer hands-on opportunities and overnight accommodations.

Since 2007, Jones has operated her own farm stay, the 70-acre Leaping Lamb Farm, in Alsea, Oregon. She has been surprised at many guests’ “agricultural illiteracy”, underscoring the importance of the educational experiences that farm stays like hers offer. “I used to send guests off to graze in the garden alone, but then realized many people don’t know what carrots look like in the field,” says Jones. “I would get questions like, ‘Don’t you need a brown cow to make chocolate milk?’”

More than one in three guests to Leaping Lamb Farm return for subsequent stays, a very high retention rate for the lodging industry. “We get to watch families grow up as they return to the farm year after year. That has a real impact, as we need the next generation to get involved in farming and food systems,” Jones notes.

Justin Bolois, of Los Angeles, got intro-

duced to agritourism in Tuscany, later seeking out the farm experience closer to home. “We had been living in New York City at the time and came to value the expansive countryside being in Italy,” he says. “The family, which ran a vineyard, would cook incredible meals for us. Vacations are great when they mirror the experience of living in a place, and agritourism is one of the closest ways to access that.”

Bolois and his wife later discovered Straus Home Ranch, in Marshall, California, and fell in love with the place and its people so deeply they hosted their wedding there. The ranch was founded by a pair of pioneers in organic farming and land conservation in Marin County, and it was later revitalized to include a farm stay by siblings Vivien, Miriam and Michael Straus after their parents’ deaths. “You can tell that Vivian and Michael not only care about what they do, they also care about you, and about you enjoying their life mission. That’s a very special bond to develop with an agritourism owner,” Bolois says.

The ranch features special touches, including a beautifully equipped kitchen to shuck local oysters or to host private chefs for farm-fresh meals served on a handcrafted table made of reclaimed redwood from their old hay barn. There is no cellphone reception on the ranch, encouraging guests to kayak, hike, birdwatch and stargaze.

“After being cooped up during COVID, people want to see wildlife and biodiversity again. People are aching to disconnect from their screens and reconnect with nature— what we call ‘dirt therapy’,” says Ashley Walsh, president and founder of Poconos Organics, one of the largest Regenerative Organic Certified farms on the continent, sprawling across 380 acres in Long Pond, Pennsylvania.

Walsh built the boutique resort, The Village

at Pocono, with her grandfather when she was 25 as a sister destination to the farm. The accommodations feature full kitchens where guests can cook a cornucopia of produce fresh from the fields. Visitors can enjoy luxurious amenities on site, then pop over to the farm to attend hands-on cooking classes, wellness retreats, farm tours and more.

Beyond connecting with rural life, farm stays are a meaningful, mutually beneficial way for farmers and consumers to reconnect on a personal level. “Agritourism puts a face to farming. We want to educate people so they can make better choices in food and get to experience what really fresh food tastes like,” Jones says.

Ashley Walsh From Personal Health Crisis to Organic Farming

As the founder of Pocono Organics, a leading regenerative organic farm in Pennsylvania, Ashley Walsh understands that the way food is grown can determine its nutritional properties and significantly impact the environment. Her own journey from illness to wellness led her to organic foods and responsible farming practices. It is a remarkable story of triumph over adversity and can inspire others on the path to lifelong well-being.

In her late 20s, Walsh was diagnosed with gastroparesis, a devastating condition that involves the partial paralysis of the stomach, making every meal a painful prospect.

“I couldn’t digest most fruits, vegetables or meat, and was in

excruciating pain with vomiting and nausea, which led to malnutrition,” she recalls.

Desperate for help, Walsh exhausted every treatment Western medicine had to offer.

“I cycled through medications without relief and even tried Botox. When my doctors recommended feeding tubes and cutting out parts of my stomach, I turned to functional medicine,” she explains. “After experimenting with juicing and smoothies, I was finally able to get nutrients and nourishment from real food. This led to a broader detox. I cut out processed food, additives and dyes and introduced plantbased supplements and non-toxic personal care items.”

The more Walsh moved toward an organic diet and lifestyle, the better she felt. “I started seeing undeniable results and went from feeling sick five days a week to having symptoms only five days a month. My whole life, I’d eaten low-quality food like corn chips, cheese sandwiches and pizza, not realizing what I was putting in my body,” she muses.

While she transitioned to a healthier lifestyle, Walsh was assistant director at Fox Sports, a job that required constant travel, and finding the healthy ingredients she needed was difficult. “I was frustrated that the supply did not meet the demand for nutritious, whole food. At the same time, I wanted to share my passion for using food as medicine, and it was in the back of my mind to start a small community farm for a while,” she recalls.

At a 2015 impact investing conference, Walsh learned how a business could help people and the planet, while still making a profit. “This truly resonated with me, and the seed was planted,” she explains. “I leased a 50-acre parcel of land from the family business and called Rodale Institute, the leader in organic and regenerative farming practices, for consultation.”

Pocono Organics opened its gates to the public in 2019 and has flourished ever since. The 380-acre farm hosts tours, community events, cooking classes, an organic market and a café. It is a global center for

From Organic to Grass-Fed to Regenerative Finding the Best Farming Practices

Embarking on a journey toward healthier eating often begins with a quest for a better understanding of food-labeling and food-sourcing options. For those taking their first steps into the world of healthy eating and sustainable agriculture, terms like grassfed, organic and regenerative can be both intriguing and perplexing. Understanding these distinctions empowers consumers to make choices aligned with their values and priorities when selecting food products.

Sarasota

CONVENTIONAL FARMING

“Conventional farming practices involve very heavy equipment, heavy tillage and a lot of inputs—chemical fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides,” says Elizabeth Whitlow, the executive director of the Regenerative Organic Alliance. “Despite its high outputs, conventional farming does not necessarily guarantee nutritious, healthy crops.”

A majority of our meat originates from animal feeding operations (AFOs), where animals are commonly raised in confinement and fed genetically modified grains, as opposed to grazing or foraging in pastures or rangelands. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, “Manure and wastewater from [AFOs] have the potential to contribute pollutants such as nitrogen and phosphorus, organic matter, sediments, pathogens, hormones and antibiotics to the environment.”

GRASS-FED BEEF

Grass-fed farming focuses on feeding livestock grass rather than grains and, in some cases, allowing them to forage for their food, which is considered more humane than AFOs. Rotational grazing, common in grass-fed farming, contributes to environmental sustainability by promoting soil fertility and biodiversity.

According to a 2019 review published in Nutrition Journal that compared the nutritional profiles of grass-fed and grain-fed beef, scientists from the California State University College of Agriculture noted that grass-fed beef tends to be lower in overall fat and higher in several heart-healthy fatty acids and antioxidants, including omega-3s, conjugated linoleic acid, precursors for vitamins A and E, and glutathione. The authors also note, “To maximize the favorable lipid profile and to guarantee the elevated antioxidant content, animals should be finished [fed before slaughter] in 100 percent grass or pasture-based diets.”

While there is no federal standard for a grass-fed label, third-party certifiers that may lend a level of reliability include the American Grassfed Association and A Greener World. Look for 100 percent grassfed and grass-finished certification, and remember that a grass-fed label doesn’t automatically mean that the product is organic or regenerative organic.

USDA ORGANIC CERTIFICATION

Established by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) in 1990, the USDA Organic certification and farming practices focus on soil health, biodiversity and natural methods of pest and weed control, rather than using synthetic inputs like chemical fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides, or genetically modified organisms. According to the USDA, 17,445 certified organic farms operated a total of 4.9 million acres in 2021, amounting to less than 1 percent of U.S. farmland. From 2019 to 2021, sales of organic crops increased 5 percent to $6.1 billion.

A 2019 study published in the journal Environmental Research reported that an organic diet may reduce exposure to a range of pesticides in children and adults. A 2024 review of studies published in the journal Food noted that certain health benefits have been associated with a higher consumption of organic foods, including a reduction in obesity, improvements in blood nutrient composition and a reduction in the development of non-Hodgkin lymphoma and colorectal

cancers. Rodale Institute’s Vegetable Systems Trial, a long-term, side-by-side comparison of conventional and organic methods, is designed to analyze nutrient density and explore the links between soil health and human health.

REGENERATIVE FARMING

In addition to adhering to the core principles of organic farming, regenerative agriculture sets out to actively rejuvenate and improve ecosystems, nurture soil health, foster biodiversity and promote water retention, with the added benefit of sequestering environmental carbon by returning it to the soil. According to Kegan Hilaire, a small-farms consultant for Rodale Institute, this type of farming prioritizes human health, farmworker conditions, animal welfare and animal integration into farming methods. Farms and products that bear the Regenerative Organic Certification (ROC) label “meet the highest standards in soil health, animal welfare and social fairness,” Whitlow explains. As of 2023, 156 farms and about 1.1 million acres have received this certification, which is overseen by the Regenerative Organic Alliance, a non-

profit group of experts in farming, ranching, soil health, animal welfare, and farmer and worker fairness.

VOTING WITH OUR POCKETBOOKS

Hilaire points out that only about 1 percent of the U.S. population are farmers, fewer are certified organic or regenerative, and many small farms employ these methods without getting the official paperwork. “The best certification is meeting your farmer and deciding if you trust where your food is coming from,” he suggests.

Grass-fed, organic and regenerative organic foods each offer unique benefits, from improved nutrition to environmental sustainability. Every purchase becomes a vote for the kind of world we want to live in. By selecting products aligned with our values, we can collectively drive positive change in the food system and shape a healthier, more sustainable future for generations to come.

Natural Pet

Taking Pets on Family Trips

Holistic Tips for Stress-Free Traveling

Pets are part of our family, and ensuring their comfort during travel speaks volumes about our bond with them. Travel, whether by car, train or plane, can significantly affect pets, leading to symptoms of anxiety such as excessive barking, whining, pacing and, in some cases, aggression or withdrawal. To address a pet’s anxiety, it is critical to understand their perspective. Travel disrupts their feeling of safety. Mitigating this disturbance with natural and comforting interventions ensures that such journeys can evolve into harmonious and enriching adventures.

HOLISTIC REMEDIES AND TECHNIQUES

Holistic veterinary medicine offers a range of solutions that address travel-induced anxiety in pets. By focusing on natural remedies that promote calmness, we can avoid the side effects often associated with pharmaceuticals.

• Hemp Oil: Anecdotal reports from dog owners suggest that cannabidiol (CBD), which is abundantly found in hemp oil, can significantly aid in managing anxiety. These observations are supported by a study conducted at the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine in which 83 percent of participating dogs demonstrated a decrease in stress or anxiety-related behaviors after consuming CBD chews prior to a stressful event.

• Herbal Supplements: Herbs like chamomile, valerian root and passionflower have been used for centuries to relieve anxiety in humans, and are equally as effective in pets. They can be administered in the form of treats or capsules. Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) and chamomile (Anthemis nobilis) have been reported to enhance relaxation behaviors such as resting and sleeping, and to diminish dog barking in rescue shelters.

• Aromatherapy: When diffused in a pet’s travel space, essential oils such as lavender and frankincense can create a serene environment and significantly reduce stress and anxiety. Choose therapeutic-grade oils and verify with a veterinarian that they are safe

for pets, as certain essential oils can be harmful to our furry friends.

• Acupressure: By applying pressure to specific points on a pet’s body, we can help release tension and encourage a calm state. It is especially useful for pets that are less amenable to oral supplements, offering a noninvasive path to relaxation. Pet owners can be trained in this modality by a veterinarian or acupressure therapist that specializes in treating pets.

MANAGING TRAVEL ANXIETY

Dr. Mary Burch, a certified applied animal behaviorist, emphasizes the value of taking preparatory steps as early as possible before the family embarks on a journey. Introducing a dog to the car well before a trip, for example, can significantly help make them more comfortable. This method involves gradually acclimating the pooch to the vehicle in a series of steps—from simply spending time in a parked car to taking short drives. Such preparatory measures allow pets to become familiar with the environment of a vehicle, associating it with positive experiences and rewards, thereby easing their anxiety and making travel a more enjoyable experience for all.

PRACTICAL TIPS FOR PET OWNERS

• Start early. Gradually acclimate a pet to their travel carrier and intended mode of transportation.

• Maintain a routine. As much as possible, stick to the pet’s regular feeding and exercise schedule to provide a sense of normalcy.

• Stay calm. Pets often pick up on their owner’s emotions; maintaining a calm demeanor can help reassure them.

• Consult a holistic veterinarian: Before introducing any new supplement or remedy, consult with a professional to ensure it is appropriate for a pet’s health status and needs.

Relief for Parkinson’s Patients

How Traditional and Complementary Interventions Can Help

According to the Parkinson’s Foundation, more than 10 million people worldwide and nearly 1 million Americans are living with Parkinson’s disease (PD). Every year, nearly 90,000 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with this ailment, which causes the gradual loss of dopamine-producing neurons in the brain. Symptoms that develop slowly over years include tremors; stiff muscles; a slow, shuffling gait; and difficulties with movement and speech.

There is no cure for PD, and by the time a patient is diagnosed, they may have already

lost 60 to 80 percent of their dopamine-producing cells. According to Kenneth Sharlin, a board-certified neurologist and certified functional medicine doctor, the first line of defense for PD is levodopa (L-Dopa), a pharmaceutical that is converted to dopamine in the body. “Unfortunately, natural strategies don’t get a lot of research, so no supplement has been shown to effectively treat the disease,” he asserts. “Mucuna pruriens, a tropical legume that grows in Africa, Asia and the Pacific Islands, naturally contains levodopa, but studies have shown it to be unreliable.”

Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that plays a role in controlling memory, mood, sleep, learning, concentration and movement. “If the car doesn’t have gas, then you can’t drive it,” explains Sharlin. Once a patient is taking levodopa to bring dopamine levels up, complementary strategies can be employed to help manage PD symptoms by as much as 73 percent, according to a panel of doctors participating in The Parkinson’s Solutions Summit. Exercise, sleep and even intimacy with a partner can all be managed well once the car has “gas” to drive it.

EXERCISE

According to Sharlin, the number one strategy for PD patients to maintain their motor function is exercise such as bicycling, chair yoga, movement classes in warm water pools, Pilates and dance. A meta-analysis published in Gerontology and Geriatrics analyzed 15 randomized controlled trials involving 498 participants in several countries to investigate the health impacts of self-directed physical activity (SDPA) on patients with early and mid-stage PD. The study examined the effects of moderate-intensity exercises, including aerobics, dance, strength training, flexibility exercises and Nordic walking. The researchers found that the SDPA significantly enhanced gait function, balance, mobility, function and postural control.

GUT HEALTH

Monitoring gut function is very important for patients with PD, as constipation is very common,” states Trupti Gokani, a board-certified neurologist, health and mindset coach, and Ayurvedic expert. Improving gut function with the help of key nutrients from vegetables, fruits, clean protein, nuts and seeds, olive oil, herbs and

spices has been shown to slow the progression of the disease. It is best to choose organic when possible, as that will decrease the exposure to brain-toxic chemicals. A gluten-free diet has also been found to improve PD symptoms.

Sharlin recommends an antioxidant-rich diet packed with polyphenols, along with green tea that contains catechins called epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), a natural antioxidant with neuroprotective properties.

STRESS REDUCTION

Anxiety linked to PD can worsen the symptoms,” Gokani points out. Chronic stress is a risk factor for PD, because it elevates the hormone cortisol, which can interfere with neuronal plasticity and damage dopamine-producing neurons in the brain.

Incorporating deep breathing, meditation and other relaxation techniques is integral to improving the patient’s quality of life.

According to Sharlin, “Mindfulness-based stress reduction techniques to self-regulate have a positive impact in regulating Parkinsonism.”

NEW TEST TO CONFIRM DIAGNOSIS

When a patient comes to his office exhibiting PD symptoms, Sharlin now has a new way to confirm a PD diagnosis by taking a small tissue sample and sending it to the lab to look for a neural protein called alpha synuclein, which is associated with PD. In a 2023 National Institutes of Health study involving 428 people with PD and 120 control volunteers, this skin biopsy was found to be very accurate, with 92.7 percent sensitivity.

DEEP BRAIN STIMULATION

According to Sharlin, deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a well-researched and well-developed treatment for PD. The surgical therapy involves implanting electrodes within areas of the brain to interrupt irregular signals that cause movement-re-

lated symptoms. A 2019 retrospective study of 400 patients that underwent DBS implantation found that 75 percent of the participants felt the procedure provided symptom control.

Focused ultrasound is another PD tool, using ultrasound beams to destroy areas in the brain cells that are causing movement problems. This procedure is permanent and can be done on only one side of the brain, so it helps symptoms on only one side of the

body. Treatment to both sides could cause speech, swallowing or memory problems. Sharlin notes that the results from focused ultrasound are no better than DBS and involve more intense intervention. Also, not all Parkinson’s patients are good candidates for this procedure.

A Look at Single-Use Plastics

Understanding the Challenges and Solutions

We might be tempted to bring plastic forks to a picnic or succumb to the expediency of prepackaged chips for our kids’ lunches, but single-use plastics wreak havoc on the environment and human health. Although marketed as disposable, most of these fossil fuel-derived, non-biodegradable items are not being recycled, so they languish indefinitely in landfills or pollute our waterways in the form of microplastics. “Plastic pollution has been linked to everything from infertility and cancer in humans to severe injury and death in wildlife,” says Veena Singla, senior scientist for the National Resources Defense Council, in New York.

PLASTIC USE IS RAMPANT

Roughly 30 percent of garbage in the U.S. comes from single-use plastics,” says Shawn Flood, a partner and vice president of operations and customer care at SBC Waste Solutions, a waste collection company based in Broadview, Illinois.

Marketed for their inexpensive, lightweight, flexible and impermeable qualities, we have come to rely on plastic grocery bags, shrink wrapping, drink bottles, stickers, K-cups, straws, gloves, takeout containers and other throwaway products. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, approximately 380 billion plastic bags and wraps are used annually, which require 12 million barrels of oil to make.

RECYCLING IS NOT HAPPENING

Many plastic products that could be recycled are still getting tossed into the landfill. “The biggest problem is contamination,” Flood explains. “When someone puts a plastic milk jug into the recycling bin and there’s still milk inside of it, that ends up getting trashed. Those products become

single-use plastics when consumers don’t do the correct job of washing recyclables.”

BANNING SINGLE-USE PLASTICS

Over the past few decades, countries including Costa Rica, France and Italy, as well as some U.S. states, have introduced laws that prohibit or tax single-use plastics. “They are banning single-use plastics in California,” Flood notes. “Everything is paper. Basically, you cannot find a plastic straw,” Flood notes.

Other states following the trend to ban certain plastics include Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Maine, New York, Oregon, New Jersey and Vermont. The U.S. Department of the Interior is phasing out single-use plastics on public lands, including national parks, by 2032. A Los Angeles County public works study reports that a ban on plastic bags in San Jose has led to reductions of plastic bags found in storm drains (89 percent), rivers (60 percent) and residential areas (59 percent).

Some states, however, have chosen to protect the continued use of these items. For example, Indiana passed a bill in 2016 prohibiting city and county officials from taxing or restricting the use of disposable plastic bags by certain retailers. Similar laws have been enacted or proposed in Wisconsin, Idaho, Florida and Arizona.

BEWARE OF GREENWASHING

New single-use products are continually being introduced that claim to be better for the environment, but consumers need to be cautious of such promises, says Brandon Leeds, co-founder of SOFi Paper Products, based in Miami, Florida. “There’s a tremendous amount of greenwashing going on,” he explains. “They stamp the products as eco-friendly. For example, some agave

straws are predominantly made with plastic and just mixed with agave.”

SOFi manufactures straws and drinking cups that are 100 percent paper, 100 percent plastic free and 100 percent compostable. They sell to 4,000 businesses in the U.S., including mom-and-pop coffee shops, highend restaurants, convenience stores and popular food chains. Leeds remarks, “Our company mission is to educate people.”

CHOOSING BETTER OPTIONS

Alternatives to plastic, such as cotton or paper bags, also have environmental impacts, and the jury is out on whether single-use plastic bans can really improve the environment, according to Enhesa, a company that helps businesses with regulatory compliance.

A study commissioned by the American Recyclable Plastic Bag Alliance, a group that represents U.S. manufacturers and recyclers of plastic bags, found that New Jersey’s ban resulted in a 60 percent decline in bag volume. However, the study also found six times more woven and non-woven polypropylene plastic was used to produce reusable bags, which are not widely recycled. The non-woven bags consume 15 times more plastic, and their production generates five times the greenhouse gas emissions per bag than the thin plastic bags.

Flood says one solution may be “to go back to the early days when glass was used for everything, and it could be used over and over.” Several states have created container deposit laws related to glass and plastic. In Oregon, for example, nearly every business that sells certain beverages in redeemable sealed containers is legally required to accept returned containers that can be recycled or reused.

The bottom line, Flood asserts, is that people need to move away from a throwaway mentality and stop using single-use plastics. “The consumer has the power to do anything,” he says. “When I go on vacation and I’m walking on the beach, I’m picking up pieces of plastic everywhere.”
