site context

a green hawker?

Adam RFC opened in 1974 and was one of the dedicated food centres created in the 1970s. Even today, this hawker centre is a crowd favourite that serves both traditional and modern cuisines. Accounting for its strong cultural and heritage values tied at its core, this iconic nine-sided centre is proposed to go through a series of prominent upgrades that includes an increase in level as well as link to our proposed bridge.

Closer to home, food security is an important issue that Singapore needs to continuously focus on. Given that a vast majority of hawker stalls do use produce that could be harvested locally, would it be viable to introduce this food security system directly?

Hydroponics and aquaponics are some of the many possible practices we could further incorporate into our lives to potentially mitigate this issue. Vegetables, fruits and herbs used in hawkers could be directly harvested from this urban farm.

This intervention focuses on creating a green link that allows users to experience and understand the food production process before consumption in the hawker centre. This creates an opportunity to directly involve and educate the public on food related issues such as the amount harvested and environment needed for different produce.

l ayout 1. Farmer’s Market In this intervention, a prelude in the form of ‘negative space’ taken from the courtyard of Adam RFC itself has been placed to achieve the result. Here, store vendors are able to offer fresh harvest from the link bridge whenever possible. This gives visitors and locals the opportunity to directly experience harvests from an urban farm before continuing with the journey.

2. Connection to ground level In this connection to the ground that comprises of a large green space, users can understand the varying types of local produce as well as the process of producing it.

Diversity in spaces that are shaded and open also gives rise for the platform to engage people in understand the needs of different produces.

3. Direct connection to Adam RFC A direct connection was created for those who require straight paths to the bridge and hawker centre.

This connection holds local seasonal produce that keeps things exciting.

4. Connection to rooftop Making use of rooftops as a hub for solar energy was a possibility explored here. The flattened edge of the roof also allows practical use while still maintaining the iconic figure of Adam RFC. Here, the aquaponics farm will be set up with supervision from proper management.

deriving the link In order to transform this 55m link into a more purposeful and prolonged journey, crucial connections were identified. Connection to the ground is important as it accounts for the largest human traffic with the vast green space.

Alternative pathways were also introduced to provide options for users.

The paths were subsequently altered, and the journey was prolonged by introducing spaces that can cater to different plant needs such as using shaded and unshaded spaces based on the amounts of sun exposure needed for the various species.

sorting the hierarchy of produce A. Hydroponics: Low maintenance Connection to the ground links to a high density of visitors.

Vegetation with lower maintenance is situated here to encourage and ease visitors in the process of production while intriguing them to continue with their journey.

Example includes bak choi, pandan leaves and carrots.

B. Hydroponics: Seasonal Direct route to Adam RFC. Usage of seasonal produce to attract them, keeps it exciting for frequent users of the link bridge.

Example includes strawberries, dragon fruit and watermelon.

C. Aquaponics: High maintenance Consumption of the produce here (seafood) is important for hawkers; hence this has the highest privacy and requires authorised skills for maintenance.

Example includes tilapia, cod and sea bream.

NARRATIVE

Libraries have always been known to be a virtuous space. In 2075, libraries are being privatised.

Blinded by the greed for money, some companies have turned to finding ways in setting up secret experiments underground. They have also subtly designed a process that would gain the human test subjects at their own will, unknowingly.

Libraries are the prime target because the general public views it as a virtuous space and it is a considerably trusted area that is known to benefit people on almost all types of information.

Here, these patrons are now identified as test subjects who are part of certain unethical experiments run by the said companies. They are not necessarily aware of the repercussions and stake.

In order to gain volunteers for these experiments, patrons will be offered monetary incentives that are attractive. These serve as a form of luring device into getting them enticed to the rooms that transports them virtually to the experiments and will only be released until they are done, with duration varying across each experiments.

These rooms that host such sinister activities are tucked away in hidden corners with limited access to other members of the public.

Final Building: Derivation of main form Studying the Tama Art University and Cave-like Restaurant drove the idea of incorporating arches into the design to blend it in with the underground concept.

These arches also create a form of passageway that can double up as maze-like pathways for circulation in the library.

To increase the intensity of the maze, the arches have been inverted to give a fresh take on how arches usually work.

Using these simple panels carved with inverted arches at different corners, hidden spaces were able to be created for storage of these unethical experimental rooms.

The hidden corners were designed to be away from the bulk of patrons in the central space and main areas that are filled with bookshelves from top to bottom.

With the intension to blend in with the cave-like undergroundtrait, the circle was deformed to some extent

Intersecting lines were added to create small and large spaces

To create hidden spaces, the blue lines were made as a form of partition against the other spaces

Panels are all individually crafted so that it does not produce similar paths, while ensuring there are sufficient dead ends purposefully created for hidden spaces

Final Building: Derivation of main form

Panels were extruded and the inverted arches were carved carefully, ensuring that no panel is identical

Stairs were then added as the final step to create this simple yet maze like structure. These strairs are crucial in carrying the circulation of the space as it directs the user to the hidden rooms as well as main library halls.

VR Space: Snippet of Stanford Prison Experiment Recreation Upon entering the room, user will be transported into the Virtual Space where the experiment begins. In the VR space, user will experience the simulation of being pressured/ fearing the loud noises and gestures.

This data is then collected and used by reserachers for profit.

Si ngapore MoMA Satellite Individual submission: The Wormhole Drawings done on Rhino 6 Core Studio 1, 2020

The Satellite MoMA is a dynamic space shaped by the founding mission to educate the public about modern art.

The aim of this exercise is to construct a MoMA within the given site, while ensuring that it serves as a platform for artists to freely express themselves and the public to engage in.

This Museum is fitted to the site by incorporating the existing trees and pavement as the initial boundary. The main purpose of this museum is to create a space that allows its users to feel the sense of fluctuating surfaces that is present, while experiencing the thrill of walking through the ‘wormhole’ that is connected throughout all 5 buildings.

This incorporation of the wormhole to the site also creates an opportunity for the user to peek into the activities set in each building while enjoying the art gallery walk. This was taken inspiration from the artist of study, A1ONE, who often produces work that is rather unconventional as a form of breakingboundaries within his society.

AXONOMETRIC

The wormhole allows for people on the path to view programmes of the building it is in, while still enjoying the gallery walk.

The progamme spaces are designed to allow spacious yet interesting experiences. This snippet of being in the Design Lab while allowing other musuem users to view the respective project aims to make it more interactive.

The lifting of certain building spaces allows for other activities to take place around this site. The 3m lifted height can accomodate sufficient outdoor activities.

MOTO GP LOMBOK 2021

Group competition for Prefab Glamping Moto GP Race 2021 (Done in 2020) Members: Sheryl, Megan, Wen Bin, Janelle and Nasrin Renders done by Nasrin on Revit Our chosen location is near the beach and the underlying concept of our design is ‘Circuit’. By creating a series of villa tents going in a loop, this would provide a unique experience for guests who have come for the GP Motorace. The layout of the site mimics a complete circuit made up of the tents and facilities where the tents act as unique pit stops for guests to refuel before heading out once again.

Our tent design takes inspiration from the traditional Sasak architecture of Lombok which includes bamboo construction, waterproof sloped roofs and well ventilated structures on stilts. We have blended these features with major use of local materials and a tentage-like structure for a more appropriate ambience for the ‘pit stop’.

These bamboo tentages can be folded and re-used in the future as other glamping opportunities of relief shelters.

Our design also includes communal toilets for the ease of water provision and waste collection. However, guests are able to request for their own private toilets as well.

In the development and design of this project, lightness, ease of structural assembly, adaptability to the surroundings, mobility with minimum environmental damage using nonconventional materials and technology were considered.

One way this can be done is via panelization where bamboo frames, stilts, wooden decks, stairs and canvas are constructed off-site and transported to be assembled onsite. Another method is modularization, where the entire tent, deck and furnishings are done completely off-site and transported as a whole to be placed directly on site.

rede signing paya lebar airbase 2020 Group competition for URA Redesigning Paya Lebar Airbase 2020 Members: Valent, Julius, Ian, Keith, Man Lin and Nasrin Renders for ‘The Sanctuary’ done by Nasrin on Revit The aim of this competition is to develop ideas on how the PLAB site and surrounding industrial estates could be transformed into a highly liveable and sustainable new town that builds on its unique aviation history.

Paya Lebar Trail is a collaborative space in which everyone can contribute to building a community. Envisioning a creative future, our team strives to instill a creative spirit in people to encourage future generations of innovators through this community space. Paya Lebar Trail is divided into four distinct zones and the arrangement of these zones is inspired by the activity of airplanes on the runway. In this portfolio, I will be introducing the segment that I focused on.

‘The Sanctuary’ serves as a private function hall that can be customised to different events such as weddings. This hall is secluded, away from the hustle and bustle of public spaces, hence aptly named ‘The Sanctuary’.

The open and modern concept of ‘The Sanctuary’ gains inspiration from the former airport building. With the incorporation of the iconic zig-zag roof and glass walls, natural sunlight is welcomed and sprawling views of the scenery is made possible.

Replicated in its interior are high ceilings and stairs clad in white marble and mosaic, creating a refined space that is a perfect mix between traditional and contemporary.

Recreating the ve ssel Group submission for Intro to Design Computation Assignment Members: Melissa, Benjamin and Nasrin Drawings for The Vessel done by Nasrin on Rhino Situated at the heart of Hudson Yards, the designated location for the design task is surrounded by a myriad of skyscrapers and is placed against the scales of the large public spaces. Being in the centre of the neighbourhood, they expected large human traffic through this location throughout the day.

The Heatherwick Studio team knew that they had to design a notable landmark that could hold its place in this situation.

Despite such challenges, the team of architects decided that since they were unable to expand their land horizontally, they decided to seek their answer by creating spaces vertically.

The aim of this exercise was to recreate and modify the main elements of The Vessel using digital computing. This is a snippet of what my team and I were able to recreate our take of the original Vessel using Grasshopper on Rhino through these sequences.

This exercise first started with experimentation of spaces using the three primary shapes with modifications.

The exercise then encourages the application of elementary operations (shift, rotation, displacement, break, tilt) to incorporate complexity to the design derived from the base shapes and utilize the ground as a way to root the spaces.

The final floorplan and section created shows the use of space created from the sequence I have chosen earlier on.

This was an exercise focusing on the use of negative and positive spaces to create a useable area.

Using the complex positive shape derived from changing variables, I created a suitable indoor sports space that can incorporate activities such as rockclimbing using the slanted walls.

C2. physical model This assignment required my team and I to construct a shelter based on the given climatic condition of our site; Mo I Rana, Norway.

We created a two-storey shelter equipped with proper insulation and strategically placed amenities throughout.
