aval Air Station Key West’s Morale, Welfare and Recreation is close to completing renovation of the Sigsbee Park Community Center.

The center is scheduled reopen with new flooring, window treatments and lighting on Oct. 11, according to MWR Director Tim Campbell.

The community center renovation project was planned more than two years ago, at a cost of $15,000 - $20,000.

Sept. 30 1954 - The world’s first nuclear-powered submarine, USS Nautilus (SSN 571), is commissioned at Groton, Connecticut.

Oct. 1 1955 - USS Forrestal (CVA 59), the first postwar super-carrier, is commissioned.

In 1975, Forrestal is re-designated as CV-59 until 1993 when she is decommissioned.

Oct. 2 1799 - The Washington Navy Yard is established under the direction of Secretary of the Navy Benjamin Stoddert.

Oct. 3 1955 - USS Saipan (CVL 48) begins disaster relief in Tampico, Mexico, rescuing people and delivering supplies after three consecutive hurricanes struck the area.

Oct. 4 1998 - U.S. and Algerian navies conduct the first bilateral exercise - a search and rescue operation involving USS Mitscher (DDG 57) - since Algerian independence in 1962.

Oct. 5 1945 - Fleet Adm. Chester Nimitz is given a parade in his honor through downtown Washington, D.C., at the end of World War II.

Oct. 6 1884 - The Naval War College is established at Newport, Rhode Island.

his is it! This is the final column I am writing for the Southernmost Flyer.

As you read this, I am on my way to Norfolk, Virginia,to start the next stage in my life. So, I wanted to take this opportunity to relate my final words to you, my readers.

First, I want to say thank you to all who have taken the time to email or call me about my columns. It is encouraging to know the time and effort it took to write the columns wasn’t in vain.

I would always joke with the Public Affairs Office that I knew at least three people read my column because each had to edit my column. So, thank you Trice, Jolene and Cody for making me look good on paper and ensuring my columns were grammatically correct and flowed properly.

So what are my final words?

As I try to remember everything I have written, there are some key points I hope you can take away from my three years of writing.

Take care of yourself: We live in a fast-paced world. We get overworked and over-committed far too much.

The consequences of not slowing down affect us physically, emotionally, spiritually and relationally. As Proverbs states, it is foolish to toil all day and not

enjoy the fruit of our labor with others.

Be supported: God said that it’s not good for us to be alone.

We are not meant to face our lives solo. We are not Superman, Batman, Thor, CHAPLAIN'S I r o n m a n , CORNER Captain America, etc.

In spite of their powers, they still needed help. I use the analogy in my counselNAS Key West ing of a cargo Command Chaplain net. It is easier to climb a cargo Lt. Ethan Everts net than a single rope. That net represents the connections we make with those who support us through our climb - family, friends, medical, counselors, chaplains, coworkers, etc.

So, find the support you need.

Practice your faith: Our spiritualty must be foundational in our lives. So many people turn to God last in a crisis when they should turn to God first.

The challenge for service members is that we are constantly displaced, and so it means we must actively find new faith communities.

It can be draining at times, but it is well worth the search.

Everyone matters: You matter. Your neighbor matters. The stranger at the NEX matters.

In truth, every person on this

planet matters.

In the eyes of God, no one is greater than another. God shows not partiality.

God has given us all gifts and talents to better this world.

Whatever job you have or wherever you are located, do not see it as insignificant.

You can make an impact in this world. It may seem small, but if seven billion people all make a small impact, it will be greater than one person doing a big impact.

In the end, love: Love God. Love people. Love yourself.

Unconditional love is what we all need to do more.

I am not talking about the romantic love, though important in marriages. I am talking about the love that puts others first. It makes us better people, leaders, parents, spouses, coworkers and any other title we hold.

This is how I approach life and ministry. If God is love and I am his child then I also must be love.

Again, I wish you all blessings.

Canine treatments include rabies, distemper combination and kennel cough vaccinations, heartworm testing and flea/heartworm prevention. Feline treatment includes rabies and distemper combination vaccinations and flea prevention.

Boating course The Key West Sail and Power Squadron is offering the “America’s Boating Course” Oct. 1 and 2 at the Key West Sail and Power Squadron, 5205 College Road. The course runs 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Oct. 1 and 8 a.m. - noon Oct. 2. The ABC course provides the boater a Florida State Boater’s ID card, which is required for anyone born after Jan. 1, 1988, to operate a boat of 10-horse power or more. The $60 fee covers the cost of the materials; a family member willing to share materials can register for $15. Students who pass the class are also offered an introductory six-month Power Squadron membership.

Campbell said projects stay true to MWR’s mission statement of “contributing to the retention, readiness and mental, physical and emotional well-being of military personnel and to the

welfare of their families by providing a varied program of recreational, social and community activities.”

“Each of the projects addresses facility issues that are either mechani-

cal or just outdated décor,” he said. “MWR is trying to provide high quality facilities and programs for our service members and their families stationed in Key West.”
