JEA launches Toys for Tots drive

oys for Tots officially kicked off Tuesday as donation boxes were set out at sites on Naval Air Station Key West and in the community.

The Junior Enlisted Association is doing the heavy lifting - decorating, placing and monitoring donation boxes on base and in town, and HM1 Romeo Sali has volunteered to act as coordinator/liaison with the Marine

Corps Reserves representatives in the Keys.

The toy drive was established by Marine Maj. (Ret.) Bill Hendricks in 1947 so that children wouldn’t go without presents during the holidays.

The Marine Corps

Reserves continues to run the nonprofit program.

This year, the volunteers have set a goal of collecting 3,000 toys, according to JEA President AC2 Liz Lockwood.

s part of an effort to expand the reach of military voluntary education and help make

higher education accessible for all service members, veterans and family members, the DOD Voluntary Education Program will host its first online Virtual Education Fair Thursday.

The online fair is designed to enable members’ participation from anywhere in the world, helping them get a head-start on the information needed to reach their education goals.

The Military Evaluations Program Manager for the Defense Activity for Non Traditional Education Support, Taheesha Quarells, said this inaugural online education fair will

serve as a pilot for future events and offers several advantages over local education fairs.

ave you had those days, weeks, months or even an entire year you have just wanted a button in life that reset time so you could do it all over or may be just be better prepared?

In spite of a great weekend and a holiday this week, today I wish I had a reset button. The news and information I received through various sources just mentally wore me down to say, “God, can I please have a reset button?”

When my phone is acting out of sorts, I just restart it. When my computer is moving slower or just locks up, I reset the computer. If I am playing a game on my Nintendo, there is a lovely button that says, “reset,” so I can start over when the game is not going my way.

It seems to be an unconscious desire that humans wish they had in their lives. This is why time travel is so intriguing to us.

We always wonder what would happen if we decided to do react differently to a situation. We wonder what would happen if we turned left instead of right.

Nevertheless, we know that we cannot reset our days, years or lives. We are to face these troubles that seem to plague us.

So what are we to do?

Rejoice! That is right! Paul in Romans 5:3-5 states that we are to rejoice in our sufferings. What are the sufferings meant here?

I can tell you it is not because a store switched their coffee cups to red during the Christmas season.

Suffering, here, is the troubles we face because of our faith in Christ. This can refer to persecution, but it can CHAPLAIN'S also refer those CORNER trials we face that can derail us from glorifying God each day.

These sufferings are meant to deter you away from God. So Paul instructs us to rejoice. Why? Suffering produces endurance; endurance produces character; character produces hope; hope carries us with God’s love in our hearts.

Without our sufferings, we would not have resiliency. It is during these times that we build our endurance and our character. It is like running. I suffer when I run, especially in Key West. However, as I learn to push through the suffering, I build endurance. I am able to run longer and faster.

Eventually, as I endure through the sufferings, I build my character. I show myself that I am stronger and I can overcome the hurdles. With that character, I have hope to continue on in my training to improve so that one

day I might run a marathon.

I do not know what you are suffering from today. However, God knows. The verses bfore the aforementioned Romans 3 state that we have peace with God because of our faith in Christ and the grace we have obtained.

As you face your tribulations, it is not that you need to a reset button on your day. Instead you need a reset button on your attitude.

I never could have faced some of the trials I have endured if I did not have faith and hope in God first. I would have crumbled if my foundation was not in God. And if I was not careful, my attitude could have led me away from God. Though you may not see me dancing in the streets of Key West, you will still see me rejoicing in God knowing that no matter what I face, God will see me through if I keep myself fixed upon Him. I know this because the character built within me over time and the hope it brings each day.

So rejoice in the hope of the glory of God and in your sufferings!

“There, we actually went to the distribution center and pushed the carts for families [getting toys for their children],” she said.

The response of parents, she added, “really brought it home. I wanted to continue that.”

Nearly two dozen collection boxes are being set up.

After transitioning to the Navy Reserves in March 2008, Felini spent a short time at Fleet Logistics Support Squadron (VR) 56 before returning to VFA106 to join the squadron augment unit. While with the SAU he instructed both pilots and weapon systems officers in the F/A-18A/F. In March 2012 he was selected for an active duty recall to serve on staff at Commander Strike Fighter Wing Atlantic as the air launched weapons team

(ALWT) deputy director. He managed the naval aviation enterprise’s ALWT cross functional team.

While serving his active duty recall, Felini was mobilized to serve as senior offensive duty officer at the combined air and space operations center on Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar. While there he also qualified as chief of combat operations and served as the dynamic targeting cell chief.

“Each of the 43 schools participating in this fair have both online and faceto-face programs, and are currently members of the service members opportunity college degree network system. SOC DNS schools have simplified credit transfers and reduced residency requirements making it easier for students to complete degree requirements.”

Registration is required to participate, but takes only a few minutes and is anonymous, asking only for a unique username, location, e-mail, major interest, education level and how

participants heard about the fair. One unique aspect of the virtual education fair is participation of education counselors representing each branch of the armed forces, offering real-time counseling during the fair.

“All of the services have unique rules, requirements and policies regarding tuition assistance, education plans and credit transfer options,” said Deborah Harris-Sims, manager of special projects for Navy VOLED. “During the online fair, service counselors will be able to explain and clarify any misconceptions that service members may have

about education benefits and get answers that are accurate for their particular service branch.”

Quarells added that rarely will service members and their families find so many resources in one place and the virtual education fair is perfect for those who might not have an educational support office nearby.

“Depending on their location, it can be challenging for service members to find answers to their education questions quickly,” she said. “During the virtual education fair, not only will they be able to speak with someone from DANTES or a counselor from their service, but they will also be able to chat live and get real-time answers from Federal Student Financial Aid and post-9/11 GI Bill representatives.”
