O

n Thursday Joint Inter-agency Task Force South commemorates 27 years of service to the detection and monitoring of counter illicit trafficking in the Caribbean Sea and Eastern Pacific Ocean.

The task force was created on Feb. 18, 1989, when the Department of Defense was selected as the executive agency to detect and monitor international drug events. Joint Task Force FOUR, homebased in Key West, was activated and assigned the mission to monitor the Caribbean Sea. Recognition that the JTFs could be more effective with the participation of interagency and international partners led to the 1994 signing of the National Interdiction Command and Control Plan by the Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy Lee Brown.

participated in my final Navy Ball golf fundraiser last Friday. From the first year I played to this year, I think my golf game has progressively worsened. It was an ugly game for me.

My golf game is already ugly, but Friday it was horrible, even by my standards. I could not hit a drive, a chip or a putt except a few times. My best contribution seemed to be my golf cart driving!

As it has always been in these golf scrambles, my team carried me through to the end. I might still be out there swinging if it was not for them. To be honest, I was frustrated with my performance. However, this is why I play on a team when I golf. We all have bad days and bad shots.

It reminds me of one of my favorite songs growing up by Bill Withers - “Lean On Me.” Here is a portion of that song: “Sometimes in our lives we all have pain; we all have sorrow, but if we are wise, we know that there’s always tomorrow.

“Lean on me, when you’re not strong, and I’ll be your friend; I’ll help you carry on. For it won’t be long ‘til I’m gonna need somebody to lean on.

I know in life there were times I was ready to throw my proverbial golf bag into the nearest lake and walk away from it all.

Nevertheless, my faith in God kept me from quitting and keeps me heading to the 18th hole of life.

As for last week’s golf tournament, my team made it to the final hole. We completed it together. There were times of cheers, encouragement, frustrations and laughs (thanks to an exploding ball).

In the end, all the teams gathered to tell stories, have more laughs, share the frustrations and enjoy food and fellowship. It was worth making it to the end.

So keep swinging and lean on those who will help you carry on.

leet and Family Support Center is sponsoring a series of workshops to support parents as they face the challenging responsibility of raising children.

The next workshop is Tuesday from 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. at the FFSC on Sigsbee Park. Another workshop is set for March 1. These interactive workshops will provide: Information about what you can expect from children at different ages and stages of development; Skills for helping you manage your children’s

behavior and for guiding them in healthy ways; Support and help in being effective parents; And a time-out from your regular schedule and the children where you can talk about family life and make new friends.

adets from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy arrive at the Naval Air Station Key West Mole Pier Feb. 14 on the training vessel USTS Kennedy. The Key West stop is a break for the cadets, who are on a ‘sea term’ voyage that lasts about 52 days and takes them throughout the Caribbean.

This Just In… CSADD competition NAS Key West’s Coalition of Sailors Against Destructive Decisions is hosting a free-throw shoot out and tricycle relay race to promote the responsible use of alcohol during the month of February. Rainy day forecast - prepare for financial $qualls From FINRA Investor Education Foundation

M

ost of us appreciate a sturdy umbrella on a stormy day.

We don’t always know when we’ll encounter rain, but unless we live in the desert, we know that eventually rain will fall. So we buy umbrellas, raincoats and boots to protect ourselves against the inevitable downpour.

Rainy day funds, or emergency savings, protect us too. We can’t always predict when we’ll have a money emergency, but we know that eventually a financial crisis will arrive.

Setting aside money in a rainy day fund shelters you from a financial storm.

Chances are, you’ve already

experienced a financial squall or two; it’s tough to go through life without them.

An unexpected automobile or home repair, a surprise tax bill, or an unplanned trip home for a funeral or wedding all qualify.

Sometimes, financial rainfall lands not in the form of a bill to pay, but as a sudden loss of income.

This could be due your spouse’s layoff, a divorce or your unplanned separation from the service. It’s a good idea to make a rainy day fund one of your highest savings priorities.

Put $20 a week in an emergency fund and your account will grow to over $1,000 in just one year.

That’s often enough to cover a repair bill or emergency travel.

A rainy day fund can also

shield you from the high cost of borrowing, and keep you from hydroplaning into debt.

A good way to set up a rainy day fund is to save automatically. Arrange to put money into an emergency fund account through an allotment from your military pay.

You can accomplish the same thing through a systematic transfer from your regular checking or savings account at your bank or credit union.

Keep your rainy day funds separate from your checking account, and label it “for emergency use only.” Just writing down an account’s purpose can keep you from spending the money for any other reason. Visit “Start an Emergency Fund” at www.

Even if you start out small, keep saving. You should put aside enough in your rainy day fund eventually to cover living expenses for three - six months. If you anticipate a job loss or separation from the service, try to save even more.

An easy way to save for your rainy day fund is by taking the Military Saves Savers’ Pledge. Choose “Emergency Fund” from the drop-down menu. It’s a commitment you make to yourself to take shelter from financial storms.

We know that rainfall is inevitable, and we prepare for it. Like an umbrella sheds rain, a rainy day fund sheds financial rainfall.

Golfers swing in support of Navy Ball fundraiser From NAS Key West Public Affairs

N

ineteen teams of active and retired military - and DOD civilians - came with clubs in hand Feb. 12 for the annual Navy Ball Golf Tournament at the Key West Golf Club.

Winning the tournament was the team of Jim Scholl,

Ron Demes, Ricky Philips and John Tortorici, all of whom have played in the annual fundraiser since it was established in 2011. The group donated the first place award - $400 - back to the Navy Ball Committee, which organized and ran the tournament. All funds raised in the tournament are used to offset the cost of the Ball for Sailors.
