JIATF South celebrates 27 years of service (Feb. 13, 2016) Sailors return a hose after fueling a helicopter aboard guided-missile destroyer USS Bulkeley (DDG 84). Bulkeley is deployed as part of the Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group in support of Operation Inherent Resolve, maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations.

n Thursday Joint Inter-agency Task Force South commemorates 27 years of service to the detection and monitoring of counter illicit trafficking in the Caribbean Sea and Eastern Pacific Ocean. The task force was created on Feb. 18, 1989, when the Department of Defense was selected as the executive agency to detect and monitor international drug events. Joint Task Force FOUR, homebased in Key West, was activated and assigned the mission to monitor the Caribbean Sea. Recognition that the JTFs could be more effective with the participation of interagency and international partners led to the 1994 signing of the National Interdiction Command and Control Plan by the Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy Lee Brown. In 1994, JTF FOUR was renamed JIATF East, and was assigned to the see JIATFS page 2
