T

he expeditionary fast transport ship USNS Spearhead (T-EPF 1) pulled into Naval Air Station Key West’s Truman Harbor Feb. 4 to load up supplies for its first participation in Continuing Promise 2017. Continuing Promise is a U.S. Southern Command training mission introduced in 2007. Continuing Promise provides medical, engi-

neering, veterinary and humanitarian assistance activities in select countries to strengthen partnerships and improve cooperation on many levels with partner nations, interagency organizations and nongovernmental organizations. The supplies were shipped to NAS Key West and organized and loaded by Fleet Logistics Center Jacksonville, Detachment Key West. Supply Officer Lt. Joshua Andrews said his team was key to the operation.

“For this first trip, we’ve stored and transported 85 pallets totaling about 45,000 pounds of donated material,” said Andrews. “This was all done between Boca Chica Field and Truman Annex. It was truly a team effort between Port Ops, Supply and NAVFAC and showcases the range of capabilities available at NAS Key West. On top of all that, it’s an honor to be part of a mission that is helping people and partner nations.” Through April, Continuing

Promise will provide medical and dental care, preventive medicine and veterinary consulting, in Colombia, Guatemala and Honduras. Building on relationships created in previous years, participants will work together to increase the capacities of countries and communities to provide for themselves, making each visit an exchange of information and chance to strengthen our partnersee promise page 3
