Offices close, reduce hours for holidays From NAS Key West Public Affairs

ailors and civilians at Naval Air Station Key West will spend time with family and friends on Dec. 25 and Jan. 1 as base facilities will close for Christmas and New Year’s Day. Most personnel will also be off at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, as President Barack Obama issued an executive order Dec. 11 calling for a half-day off for civilians.

The “Southernmost Flyer” won’t publish Dec. 25 or on Jan. 1; publication resumes Jan. 8.

The commissary will have special hours of operation during the Christmas holiday week. It is open 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. Monday, 10 a.m.

- 8 p.m. Tuesday, 10 a.m. - 7 p.m.

Wednesday, and 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Thursday. The commissary hours for Dec. 31 are 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. and the store is closed Jan. 1.

The NEX at Sigsbee Park and mini marts at Trumbo Point and Boca Chica Field will be open 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Thursday, closed Dec. 25, open for normal hours Dec. 31.

Follow fire safety tips for happy holiday From NAS Key West Fire and Emergency Services

T

he most joyous of time of year can also be the most deadly. Take the holiday season.

Christmas trees are involved in about 400 fires annually, according to the National Fire Protection Association. Short-circuiting tree lights are cited as the leading cause of those fires.

As the holidays approach, Naval Air Station Key West’s Fire and Emergency Services offers these safety tips for choosing and pre-

paring holiday trees to minimize the risk of fire and injuries.

Artificial trees should bear the “Fire Resistant” label. While this type of tree can catch fire, it will resist burning and should extinguish quickly.

Buy the freshest natural tree available. A fresh tree is green, its needles are hard to pull from branches and when bent between your fingers, the needles do not break. The trunk butt is sticky with resin, and when tapped on the ground, the tree should not see Safety page 5

espite the holiday season, this world is in some dark times. Turning on the radio these past weeks has not been very cheery.

Despite being on an island, we are not immune to this darkness. This week there were bomb threats at the local high schools.

There have been murders, theft and other tragedies affecting the Keys in the past months.

There seems to be no shortage of darkness.

It brings to mind a quote from the “Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.” Facing what appeared to be imminent defeat, King Theoden despairs, “So much death. What can men do against such reckless hate?”

So how does an individual fight such reckless hate and darkness in this world? [When I say darkness, I am not talking about a specific entity, but the overarching darkness that seems to engulf this world].

We fight it with light.

Light is what combats darkness. We do not turn on the dark or have “flashdarks.” Light will always overpower darkness.

The greatest stories, whether fictional or fact, usually have a

struggle of light and dark where light wins in the end. Most religions have some aspect of light overpowering darkness.

So what is the light? According the Scriptures, it is love. Love overpowers hate in the end.

In the Gospel of John, Jesus is described as CHAPLAIN'S the light enterCORNER ing this dark world. It also states that Jesus was sent as an act of love by God in spite of this world’s hatred NAS Key West toward God. 1 Command Chaplain John states that God is the light Lt. Ethan Everts and love and that the church is to be in the light and is to act in love toward each other.

Returning hate for hate only breeds more darkness, exponentially. To return love for hate can lessen the darkness or even eliminate the darkness in someone else.

How do we push back the darkness? We become the light.

And the more light joins together, the stronger it gets.

It takes each of us to shine this light. An old church camp song states, “This little light of mine, I

am going to let it shine!” We each have a light to shine.

When you show love to someone - whether it is giving a toy to an orphan or giving shoes to the poor or feeding the hungry - the light is not little to the person receiving love. It shines greatly into their hearts.

Love can come in so many forms. As you approach this holiday season, think of ways to love those around you. It could be a simple phone call to a relative or friend. It could be volunteering at a local shelter. It could simply be saying hello to a person walking by or being courteous to a server or sales clerk.

Whatever it is, whether big or small, take time to love each other. Stop the darkness by becoming the light this world needs.

‘Toy’ drones require operators to follow FAA rules

he presents have been opened and the wrapping paper placed in the recycling bin. Tommy is anxious to get outside and fly the new “Invader 700” drone, complete with a 10-times zoom digital camera that sends immediate videos to your new iPad. Wow, you can’t wait to get out there with him and fly this thing. We can get to the instructions and safety rules

later. Let’s go flying!

Whoa, speed racer! It’s probably a good idea to take some time to go over the capabilities of your new aircraft, look at some safety aspects of your operations and understand the responsibilities you have just assumed.

But this is a toy, right?

Wrong. The Federal Aviation Administration has stated that unmanned aircraft systems are aircraft, not toys.

The Consumer Electronics Association believes 2015 will

be a defining year for the drone, with sales expected to approach 700,000 this year. The industry must be selling all of those drones as FAA statistics show a surge in “close call with drone” reports by pilots of manned aircraft: Nearly 700 incidents so far this year, roughly triple the amount recorded in 2014.

Also, the military prefers to call drones “small unmanned aircraft” since they do not just wander around aimlessly but are controlled by an individual who follows - or is expected to

follow - FAA-established rules.

The FAA has partnered with industry organizations, such as the Academy of Model Aeronautics and American Model Association, to mirror the rules established by the FAA for the remote-controlled modelers. In fact, a local R/C club is a great resource to explore.

aviation activities: airplanes, gliders, parachutists, hang gliders, the Goodyear blimp, etc. If it flies or glides, it has the right-of-way.

• The operator must remain within visual line of sight of the small unmanned aircraft. You can’t control or remain clear of other aircraft when you can’t see your own small unmanned aircraft.

• Small unmanned aircraft may not operate over any persons not directly involved in the operation.

The FAA divides the national airspace above us

into categories: A, B, C, D, E and G. You can read more about these classes here.

Class A is 18,000 feet and above sea level, and you must be communicating with the FAA to operate up there. So just remember, Class A is “above” where small unmanned aircraft should fly.

Class B/C/D is the airspace around airports and requires two-way communications with the airport’s tower, so small unmanned aircraft need to steer clear of these areas. Just remember not to fly within five nautical miles of an open airport/airfield/heliport, military or civilian.

Class G airspace exists around uncontrolled air-

ports [no two-way communications], but small unmanned aircraft must still remain clear by the five nautical miles.

And then there is special-use airspace and military training routes. SUA includes prohibited areas [like the White House], restricted areas [like military testing ranges], and military operating areas, which is where the military has hazardous or high-speed operations that will get the drone operator noticed very quickly. MTRs are “highways” in the sky where the military flies very low and very fast, so it’s smart to stay away from them.

Check with the local R/C

club to find good areas for flying drones. Club members have studied the rules and scouted the local area for the best locations to fly small unmanned aircraft.

If going it alone, have fun, but do it safely. But words of caution: Operators who have a close call and aren’t following the rules could lose their aircraft and be subject to an FAA fine of up to $27,000 for the most egregious violation.

Many military installations have an airport, airfield or heliport that requires the five-mile rule, but for national security reasons small unmanned aircraft flights are not authorized on or over military installations.

Watch out for trees with a greenish cast to their trunks and branches; many growers spray trees with green paint to make them look more appealing.

Cut at least one inch off the trunk’s base to expose fresh wood for better water absorption. A tree will absorb as much as a gallon of water or more in the first 24 hours and one or more quarts a day thereafter.

To maximize freshness and minimize fire risk, keep the tree outdoors for a few days in a bucket filled with water before bringing it indoors to decorate. The tree stand should hold at least one gallon of water.

Keep the stand filled with water and check the water level daily. A six-foot tree will absorb one gallon

of water every two days.

When setting up the tree, place it out of the way of traffic and do not block doorways.

Use only lights tested for safety by a recognized testing laboratory, such as Underwriters’ Laboratories.

Check each set of lights, new or old, for broken or cracked sockets, frayed or bare wires, or loose connections, and throw out damaged sets. LED and miniature lights are preferred, for their cool-burning bulbs.

Position bulbs so they aren’t in direct contact with needles or ornaments.

Use no more than three standard-size sets of lights per single extension cord [maximum of 200 miniature lights or 150 larger lights].

Only one extension cord should be used per outlet.

Be careful where you place electrical cords: Don’t run electrical cords under

rugs, where walking traffic can weaken the insulation and the wires can overheat, increasing the chances for fire or electric shock. Keep cords and lights away from the tree’s water supply.

Never use electric lights on a metallic tree. The tree can become charged with electricity from faulty lights, and a person touching a branch could be electrocuted.

Turn off all lights before going to bed or leaving the house. The lights could short out and start a fire.

Use only non-combustible or flame-resistant materials to trim a tree.

Decorative lighted villages, Nativity scenes, electric trains, and other electrically powered scenery and figures should be monitored like other decorative lighting.

For many folks, it’s hard to let go of the holiday

spirit, and taking down the Christmas tree isn’t nearly as much fun as putting it up. But the longer a tree stays up, the greater a fire hazard it becomes. It’s best to discard trees within one month after purchase.

The best way to dispose of your tree is to take it to a tree recycling center or have it hauled away by a community pick-up service.

Remove outdoor lights as soon as the season is over; they are not designed for prolonged exposure to the elements, especially in winter weather.

Be careful handling of lights when you are taking them down and repacking them will reduce the chances of damaging a good set of lights.

orale, Welfare and Recreation’s annual Tree Lighting and Winter Fest attracted an estimated 850 young and old patrons Dec. 10 to the Youth Center on Sigsbee Park.

from Navy Band Southeast performed while youngsters waited for Santa to arrive via Naval Air Station Key West’s Fire and Emergency Services’ fire truck. After lighting the tree, children visited Winter Wonderland, which featured games, activities and snacks. The last stop in the wonder-

land tour was a visit with Santa.

The event was sponsored by Home Depot, Fury Water Adventures, Key West Military Affairs Committee, USAA, Sparkling Ice, Keys Area Chief Petty Officers Association, Navy League Key West Council and VFW Post 1139.
