Offices close, reduce hours for holidays From NAS Key West Public Affairs

ailors and civilians at Naval Air Station Key West will spend time with family and friends on Dec. 25 and Jan. 1 as base facilities will close for Christmas and New Year’s Day. Most personnel will also be off at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, as President Barack Obama issued an executive order Dec. 11 calling for a half-day off for civilians. The “Southernmost Flyer” won’t publish Dec. 25 or on Jan. 1; publication resumes Jan. 8.
The commissary will have special hours of operation during the Christmas holiday week. It is open 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. Monday, 10 a.m. - 8 p.m. Tuesday, 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. Wednesday, and 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Thursday. The commissary hours for Dec. 31 are 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. and the store is closed Jan. 1. The NEX at Sigsbee Park and mini marts at Trumbo Point and Boca Chica Field will be open 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Thursday, closed Dec. 25, open for normal hours Dec. 31. Follow fire safety tips for happy holiday From NAS Key West Fire and Emergency Services
T
he most joyous of time of year can also be the most deadly. Take the holiday season. Christmas trees are involved in about 400 fires annually, according to the National Fire Protection Association. Short-circuiting tree lights are cited as the leading cause of those fires. As the holidays approach, Naval Air Station Key West’s Fire and Emergency Services offers these safety tips for choosing and pre-
paring holiday trees to minimize the risk of fire and injuries. Artificial trees should bear the “Fire Resistant” label. While this type of tree can catch fire, it will resist burning and should extinguish quickly. Buy the freshest natural tree available. A fresh tree is green, its needles are hard to pull from branches and when bent between your fingers, the needles do not break. The trunk butt is sticky with resin, and when tapped on the ground, the tree should not see Safety page 5
