FY2017 busy year at NAS Key West From NAS Key West Public Affairs

I

t’s been a busy year at Naval Air Station Key West - a year capped with recovery from Hurricane Irma Sept. 10.

And it wasn’t just the airfield that was busy. Our 39 tenants, including Coast Guard Sector Key West, Joint Interagency Task Force South and U.S. Army Special Forces Underwater Dive School, were busy as well often uti-

lizing NAS Key West assets, like the Mole Pier and Port Operations.

Here are the numbers for Fiscal Year 2017, which began October 2016 and ended Sept. 30, 2017: NAS Key West provided 30,000 square miles of training range services to 64 detachments with 527 aircraft and more than 6,515 pilots and crew, including the firstever training detachment of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 101, with see 2017 page 7

he Navy’s newest San Antonioclass amphibious transport dock ship, USS Portland (LPD 27), docked at Naval Air Station Key West’s outer Mole Pier Friday for holiday liberty.

Portland, which recently joined the fleet as it sailed from the shipyard in Pascagoula, Mississippi, on Dec. 14 is making its way to its homeport of San Diego.

Hill noted the crew has worked hard to prepare themselves and the ship for its mission.

“The crew successfully completed their certifications for their equipment and their ability to work together to accomplish the missions assigned,” noted Hill. “They remain enthusiastic and continue to gain confidence in themselves and their equipment.”

VAs complete SAPR training

ongratulations to the latest Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Victim Advocate class! Eleven military members completed the 40 hour Sexual Assault Prevention and Response training class for victim advocates.

The training covered a wide range of SAPR related topics and input from several guest speakers including Lt. Ferran Mora (Naval Branch Health Clinic), Detective Lee Anderson (CID), Special Agent Mike Miller (NCIS) and Lt. Sara Wooten (JAG).

The SAPR VA fills a vital role in the delivery of services to victims of sexual assault. The advocate is a primary source of

information such as victim rights, military and community resources, as well as restricted and unrestricted reporting options.

SAPR VAs also supports sexual assault prevention and intervention strategies at their commands.

Centennial, hurricane made 2017 memorable From NAS Key West Public Affairs

I

t was a year of recognition at Naval Air Station Key West, which celebrated its centennial and responded to Category 4 Hurricane Irma that came ashore in the Lower Keys - all within a three-month period.

While those events took the spotlight, we want to

shine a light on the Sailors, DOD civilians and contractors who support NAS Key West’s training mission of operational readiness of all services.

Among the accolades and achievements: • Sailors in the Operations and Maintenance Department were recognized by the Federal Executive Board, receiving the “Federal

Employee of the Year, Trades & Crafts” award.

• Tactical Combat Training System recorded its 100,000 pod-tracked sortie since the system began tracking using GPS technology in 2006.

Although a small installation, the NAS team is an invaluable training asset that provides training opportunities on land, air and sea.

In addition to supporting 17 F/A-18 Fleet Replacement Squadron training detachments (VFA106, VFA-122), other notable detachments include Carrier Air Wing CVW-1 pre-deployment workups, three B-1B detachment for counternarcotic operations, Royal Canadian Air Force aircraft, two Chief of Naval air Training Carrier Qualification Detachments, and A-10s from the 47th Fighter Squadron.

Boca Chica Field achieved its 100,000th sortie using the Tactical

Combat Training System, marking the most sorties flown on naval ranges using the system.

Air traffic controllers executed 129,291 combined Tower, Radar and Special Use Area flight operations, and safely sequenced 35,693 civilian flights into three adjacent airfields and multiple seaplane ports with zero mishaps.

After the eye of Category 4 Hurricane Irma passed within four miles of the installation, mission essential personnel restored air operations in five hours and within one day received supplies for the local community.

NAS hosted 166 ship visits at its Mole Pier,

including USNS Spearhead in support of Operation Continuing Promise’s humanitarian trips to the Caribbean. Fleet Logistics Center Jacksonville Det. Key West received, delivered and loaded 56 tons of supplies to the vessel each visit as it made numerous humanitarian trips to Guatemala, Honduras and Colombia.

Truman Harbor was home to units from Special Operations Command, military diving salvage units and other federal agencies, with more than 1,370 dive missions conducted with 2,353 students.

After Hurricane Irma, Port Operations reopened the port in five days, using a combined force of Navy, Marine Corps, USCG and Florida National Guard.

This allowed NASKW to receive FEMA-directed relief supplies, as well as the vessel Empire State, to spearhead FEMA efforts.
