hile Naval Air Station Key West is primarily a warfighter training base, it also acts as a sanctuary for a variety of endangered and protected species of plants and animals.

“NAS Key West is home to many protected wildlife species, such as crocodiles, alligators, sea turtles, manatees and, of course, the Lower Keys marsh rabbit,” according to Environmental Director Ed

Barham.

Manatees have been spotted in recent months at Boca Chica Marina and on Sigsbee Park.

“It’s important that the residents don’t feed, water or touch them,” Barham said. “We don’t need to acclimate them to humans. It presents a danger as they will come up to people and then could be injured by boats running over them.”

ave you ever been asked to do something that is out of your comfort zone? It might even be something that is completely opposite of what you think you want to do.

There are times we are called to do something that is completely out of our comfort zone and it is only natural for us to want to take the safe and more comfortable route.

This coming September it will have been 10 years since I stepped out of my comfort zone and joined the U.S. Navy Chaplain Corps. It was exciting to think about the adventure ahead of my family and me, but we had no clue what it was going to be like.

I wasn’t sure what this new lifestyle would be like or how my family would handle the transition. All I knew was that this was what God was calling my family to do and we were answering the call, even though we knew nothing about the active duty lifestyle.

As I said my goodbyes to my family and headed to Newport, Rhode Island, for officer and chaplain schools, I wondered what this new ministry was going to look like. There were so

After finishing school, my family said our goodbyes to our family and friends in South Carolina and headed to our first duty station in San Diego. It was there that our adventure in the military began.

When my wife and I were first married we knew the church was where we were meant to be serving but thought that down the road we CHAPLAIN'S might look into CORNER mission work overseas. The Chaplain Corps wasn’t even on our radar. The journey to joining the chaplainNAS Key West Command Chaplain cy took quite a few years but as Lt. I look back now I Scott Mason can see how God was preparing us for this mission, even though it wasn’t what we thought we would be doing. Now we can’t imagine not being a part of the Navy or the Chaplain Corps family.

In the book of John, Jesus is talking to Peter. Peter had been following Jesus for years but when things got hard he took his eyes off the difficult path of continuing the ministry he had been called to do. He went back to

what felt safe and comfortable.

When the resurrected Jesus appeared to him he asked him “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” John 21:15. “These” could have meant many things and we all have our “these” areas in our own lives, things we sometimes choose over Christ. Thankfully, He continues to invite us to a life of more, a life where we can refuse to settle for less. It is a life where we are called and designed to do more.

Even though I had no idea what God was doing with my family and I almost a decade ago, I am so glad that we didn’t choose the more safe and comfortable route. As I wrote earlier, we can’t imagine doing anything else right now and we are so glad that we have the privilege of being a part of something so much bigger than us.

NAS fire station ribbon cutting A ribbon cutting ceremony for Naval Air Station Key West’s Fire and Emergency Services’ new Fire Station No. 1 is 10 a.m. April 27, Bldg. A-4204, Boca Chica Field.

Commissary has coloring contest The Defense Commissary Agency is sponsoring a “Month of the Military Child” coloring contest and local military children can participate through the commissary on Sigsbee Park.

The grand prize design will be imprinted on reusable grocery bags. To participate, the artist must be a military dependent aged 11 or younger. The coloring template must be used and can be downloaded or printed from www.commissaries.com/color.

Roseate terns have returned to the area for nesting.

The terns migrate through Florida in the spring and are seen on Truman and Sigsbee Park annexes as well as Boca Chica Field.

The adult birds are extremely sensitive to prolonged or frequent disturbance.

The eggs and chicks require parental protection from daytime heat because they are highly susceptible to heat stress, Barham said. If disturbed, the young chicks may fall off the roofs or suffer heat exposure.

To protect the species, the following policies are in effect: • Routine work on rooftops should be scheduled outside of nesting season.

• Do not access any flat roof - or very shallow

•April 21, 2017 pitched roofs - between April and August for any reason without first contacting the base Natural Resources Manager at 305 797-9576. The manager will determine if terns are nesting on your roof.

• If you see these birds on or around your roof, please call the NRM. If terns are found to be nesting on the roof, any access to the roof during nesting season must be coordinated with the NRM. • Anyone who finds a tern chick that has fallen off a roof should immediately contact the NRM. If the NRM is not available, please contact Wildlife Rescue of the Florida Keys at (305) 292-1008.

SAR, Trauma Star drill together

I

t was a worst-case scenario drill that brought Navy Search and Rescue and Monroe County Sheriff’s Trauma Star together for an exercise in cooperation.

In Thursday’s drill Naval Air Station Key West’s SAR responded to a report of a pilot ejection on the outer edge of the station’s training range. The pilot was seriously injured and in need of trauma care, which is only available in Miami. In the scenario, SAR only had enough fuel to land at Boca Chica Field.

Enter MCSO Trauma Star, which now operates two rescue helicopters and is awaiting the delivery of a third.

In the drill, Trauma Star responds to an emergency request to assist in the transfer of the pilot to Miami.

Although this was the first patient transfer drill involving SAR and Trauma Star, SAR Operations Officer Lt. Ian Braun said the two entities had worked together before - at the 2016 Southernmost Air Spectacular.

The NAS Key West flight surgeon at the time had set up a mass casualty station for the air show and invited Trauma Star to participate.

“That’s when we met Bob Inscoe [director of Monroe County’s Trauma Star program]. Since meeting him, we’ve been working with them on increasing their operability,” Braun said.

Thursday’s exercise involved two separate drills, Braun said. The first was the rescue of the ejected pilot and the second was handing off the injured pilot to Trauma Star for transport.

“We alerted them and they were on standby for a hand-off,” Braun said.

After landing, the mock patient was transferred to the Trauma Star helicopter, which then launched as if enroute to Miami.

“They are a mobile ambulance and have a better level of care,” said SAR pilot Lt. Cody Harris. “They have two paramedics and a nurse. This is what they do every day.”

In fact, one of the Trauma Star crew members was a Navy veteran.

The drill “was like being home,” said Trauma Star air crewman Alex Bauer afterward.

“From our perspective, everything went great,” Braun said after the event.

Inscoe agreed, saying, “It was superior. It’s been such a pleasure working with Navy personnel.”
