Annual fest celebrates military children From NAS Key West Public Affairs

M

orale, Welfare and Recreation celebrates the Month of the Military Child in April with the annual Naval Air Station Key West Youth Fest Saturday. The event, which runs from 2 - 5 p.m. at Sigsbee Park field, includes activities, exhibits and entertainment. Children from the Groovy Kids Dance Crew will perform a hip hop dance routine and the motivational rapper “ABSOLOOT” will perform. Games, inflatables, a rock

wall, face painting and food will keep youngsters busy and happy. This month’s recognition underscores the important role military children play in the armed forces community. Sponsored by the DOD military community and family policy, it is a time to applaud military families and their children for the daily sacrifices they make and the challenges they overcome. The Month of the Military Child is part of the legacy left by former Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger. He established the DOD commemoration in 1986 to see CHILD page 2

Communities can help prevent child abuse From Commander, Navy Installations Command

I

n addition to being the Month of the Military Child, April is also Child Abuse Prevention Month. During this month, all active duty, Reservists and civilian DOD personnel are encouraged to reflect on ways to support and help strengthen military families. To emphasize how vital community support is to child abuse prevention, this year’s theme is “Keep Our Children Safe. Child Safety is a Community Responsibility.” To support this mission, community

members must - Be Informed, Be Attentive and Be Supportive. Be Supportive All parents experience stress while raising young children, especially during the infancy and toddler stages; however, too many parents refuse to ask for help. Therefore, we encourage the military community to become familiar with the emergency resources that are available to families in times of need. There are available resources to aid parents: NAS Key West chaplain, Naval Branch Health Clinic see ABUSE page 3
