mpact Aid Survey cards were sent home with local students this week and officials are urg-

ing parents to complete the surveys, which could bring additional funds to school coffers. Impact Aid provides funding to make up for lost property tax revenue.

Memories of Wilma linger 10 years later From NAS Key West Public Affairs

T

en years ago Saturday Hurricane Wilma was making her way into the Gulf of Mexico, with churning seas and increasing winds. Her eye passed 75 miles northwest of Key West, which sustained only tropical force winds. After three previous hurricanes that summer - Dennis, Katrina and Rita - Wilma seemed to be a minor wind event. In the early morning hours, however, Wilma’s wrath made landfall as the first of two storm surges washed across the Keys. The first surge began on the Atlantic side at about 1 a.m. It was low tide as sea water rose across the island. Driven by wind, the water rose up to four feet in some areas. By 5 a.m. it seemed the surge had hit

its crest and was starting to recede. It was then that a second surge from the Gulf of Mexico started to move in from the west. It was high tide and flood waters were up to six feet above normal in some areas of the Keys. Flooding began to recede after 10 a.m. Weather officials called it the worst storm surge inundation throughout most of the Florida Keys since Hurricane Betsy on Sept. 8, 1965. The flooding caused more than $400 million in damages to Naval Air Station Key West’s buildings, housing, vehicles, equipment, infrastructure and to its coastline. Morale, Welfare and Recreation sustained millions in damage to its marinas, food facilities, vehicles and equipment. see wilma page 7
